Abstract:We study cascaded microring resonator (CMRR) configurations as general nonlinear phase-shifting elements that exhibit enhanced nonlinear sensitivity and flattened transmission characteristics. We show that even when the material itself has large two-photon absorption, CMRR devices with five rings facilitate a factor-of-10 enhancement of the optical nonlinearity when compared with a channel waveguide having the same group delay. In addition, high throughput in intensity can be maintained up to a 3pi phase shift. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:The artificial resonance of optical ring resonators can be used to enhance the nonlinear phase shift resulting from a third-order material response. This enhancement results from the interaction of two effects: the internal intensity build up within the resonator which introduces a single pass nonlinear phase shift, and the resulting detuning of the resonance which causes a change in phase at the outputs. Devices consisting of multiple resonators in series can provide additional improvements in terms of allowing a large phase shift of the output. As compared to same material in bulk, devices consisting of single and multiple ring resonators constructed from an absorbing material can provide a much greater nonlinear phase shift, in some case by many orders of magnitude. In addition, these phase shifts exceed the maximum value allowed by absorption in bulk materials.
Strong Nonlinear Optics In On-Chip Coupled Lithium Niobate Microdisk Photonic Molecules

Abstract:High-quality lithium niobate (LN) thin-film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optical applications. The strict phase-matching condition should be satisfied for an efficient nonlinear optical process, which requires dispersion engineering with an LN microresonator. However, this is challenging in single microresonator, resulting from the fabrication error. Here, we demonstrate strong nonlinear effects in a photonic molecule (PM) structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks. The size mismatch of the microdisks enables phase matching by employing coupling-induced frequency splitting to compensate for the material and geometric dispersion. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical phenomena including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic signal. Meanwhile, an ultra-high four-wave mixing absolute conversion efficiency of 14% as obtained when the second harmonic signal power is at microwatts level. The LN PM is of great potential for applications in nonlinear integrated photonics.

Abstract:The realization of an efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue largely because of an inherent difficulty in simultaneously ensuring the phase-matching condition and a coherent multiple-resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second-harmonic generation in an on-chip LiNbO3 microresonator fabricated by femtosecond-laser direct writing. We overcome the above difficulty by selectively exciting high-order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Thanks to the low optical absorption and high nonlinear optical coefficient of LiNbO3 crystal, we achieve a normalized conversion efficiency of 1.106 x 10(-3)/mW in the on-chip LiNbO3 microdisk with a diameter of approximately 102 mu m.

Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Abstract:Photonic microring resonators are used in a variety of chip-integrated sensing applications where they allow to measure transmission intensity changes upon external signals with a sensitivity that scales linearly with the Q-factor. In this work, we suggest to exploit the nonlinear self-phase-modulation effect to increase the overall sensitivity by an additional gain factor appearing when the operational point of the nonlinear resonator is chosen just at the cross-over from the mono- to the bistable regime. We present the theoretical idea together with a first proof of concept experiment displaying a gain factor of 22 on a chip-integrated silicon-nitride resonator.

Adjusting Third-Order Nonlinear Properties in Silicon Triply Resonant Nanobeam Cavities

Abstract:We propose the use of triply resonant silicon photonic structures, based on a set of three coupled silicon nanobeam cavities, to engineer third-order nonlinearities. We show that a judicious selection of the opto-geometrical parameters allows a nearly independent tuning of the linear and nonlinear properties of the system. We demonstrate that longitudinally shifting the central cavity weakly affects the system nonlinear properties while strongly changing its resonance wavelengths. In contrast, longitudinally shifting one of the side cavities leads to a significant variation of the self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing nonlinear overlaps, while the linear properties of the three-cavity photonic molecule are then only moderately tuned. This geometrical control of the nonlinear properties of photonic molecules opens new degrees of freedom for the realization of small footprint and efficient optical switching and frequency conversion devices.

Abstract:High complexity, dense integrated nanophotonic circuits possessing strong nonlinearities are desirable for a breadth of applications in classical and quantum optics. In this work, we study natural phase matching via modal engineering in lithium niobate (LN) waveguides and microring resonators on chip for second harmonic generation (SHG). By carefully engineering the geometry dispersion, we observe a $26\%~W^{-1}cm^{-2}$ normalized efficiency for SHG in a waveguide with submicron transverse mode confinement. With similar cross-sectional dimensions, we demonstrate phase matched SHG in a microring resonator with 10 times enhancement on the out-coupled second-harmonic power. Our platform is capable of harnessing the strongest optical nonlinear and electro-optic effects in LN on chip with unrestricted planar circuit layouts. It offers opportunities for dense and scalable integration of efficient photonic devices with low loss and high nonlinearity.

Abstract:The ease of integration coupled with large second-order nonlinear coefficient of atomically thin layered 2D materials presents a unique opportunity to realize second-order nonlinearity in silicon compatible integrated photonic system. However, the phase matching requirement for second-order nonlinear optical processes makes the nanophotonic design difficult. We show that by nano-patterning the 2D material, quasi-phase matching can be achieved. Such patterning based phase-matching could potentially compensate for inevitable fabrication errors and significantly simplify the design process of the nonlinear nano-photonic devices.

Abstract:In the silicon-based devices, the third-order nonlinear effects containing Kerr effects, two-photon absorption (TPA), free carrier absorption (FCA) and free carrier dispersion (FCD) play the important role in the physical characteristics. In this paper, taking consideration of the linear and nonlinear effects, a comprehensive numerical analysis model based on the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) method is built and demonstrated. The nonlinear characteristics of the silicon-based waveguides and micro ring resonators are further discussed in the simulated results. The proposed model might provide an effective analysis method for all silicon-based devices, due to its good compatibility and accuracy.
Enhancement of Nonlinear Phase Shift for Format Conversion in Silicon Waveguides

Abstract:Different modulation formats may be required in different optical communication networks. Format conversion from intensity format to phase format is necessary to ensure the functions between long-haul transmission networks and metropolitan area networks. Cross-phase modulation (XPM) in silicon waveguides provides a promising way to realize all-optical integrated format conversion since a nonlinear phase shift is induced to the probe by the incident signal power. An on-off keying (OOK) signal can be converted to differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signal if nonlinear phase shift of π is achieved. We numerically investigate the nonlinear phase shift caused by XPM in silicon waveguides by considering the influences of the walk-off effect, group-velocity dispersion, and nonlinear losses including two-photon absorption (TPA) and free-carrier absorption (FCA). The nonlinear phase shift is tried to be enhanced through waveguide design and wavelength management. The walk-off effect can be minimized by carefully choosing the zero dispersion wavelength of the used silicon waveguide and setting the signal and probe wavelengths symmetrically. Low and flat dispersion is beneficial to acquiring a large nonlinear phase shift. TPA and FCA will greatly reduce the nonlinear phase shift obtained from XPM and they should be effectively suppressed in order to realize high-quality format conversion.

Abstract:Cascaded nonlinear phase shifts via second-harmonic generation are theoretically studied for quasi-phase-matched (QPM) structures. Both the effective phase mismatch and the structure itself contribute to the resultant nonlinear phase shift. Depending on the sign of the effective phase mismatch, structural contribution may enhance or depress the nonlinear phase shift. The fundamental wave will experience a nonlinear phase shift even if the effective phase matching is satisfied. By properly designing the effective phase mismatch, QPM structures with large material-based phase mismatch may provide large nonlinear phase shifts before saturation.

Abstract:Multiply resonant silicon photonic devices based on three coupled nanobeam cavities are proposed engineer third order nonlinearities at wavelengths around lambda = 1.55 mu m. We show that varying the geometrical parameters allows a flexible tuning of linear properties of the system, especially the deviations between the cavity resonance wavelengths. Based on the linear regime results, the nonlinear properties of the system are studied using coupled mode expressions of the super-modes given by the Tight-Binding method for the calculation of the nonlinear integrals controlling the intensity of the third-order nonlinear effects of the photonic molecules. We geometrically control the self-phase modulation (SPM), the cross-phase modulation (XPM), and the degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) nonlinear coefficients of the three coupled nanobeam cavities and identify general trends for nonlinear applications such as optical switching and frequency conversion devices.

Abstract:Based on the phase mismatched frequency tripling, a special configuration is proposed to produce high-order nonlinear phase shifts. In this process, the fifth-order nonlinearity dominates, which is proportional to the square of input fundamental intensity in the limit of large phase mismatch, and no pump depletion in the first crystal. Compared with conventional cascaded chi((2)) nonlinearity, theoretical study and numerical simulations show that this specific high-order nonlinear phase shift can be much larger in magnitude with a controllable sign and a rich saturable feature.

Abstract:We treat the nonlinear phase shift response in the weak perturbation limit as a linear digital filter that can be synthesized into the values of its poles and zeros and mapped onto an optical architecture. This procedure results in a significant enhancement in the nonlinear sensitivity with a response that is robust to frequency changes within the filter passband. A precompensation technique can be used to reduce distortions under strongly driven nonlinear operation to achieve a larger phase shift. We also show that nonlinear sensitivity improves with increasing filter group delay and can be increased within constant linear bandwidth by use of higher-order filters. Ultrafast and octave-spanning optical nonlinearities from strongly phase-mismatched cascaded interactions

Abstract:Cascaded nonlinearities have attracted much interest, but ultrafast applications have been seriously hampered by the simultaneous requirements of being near phase-matching and having ultrafast femtosecond response times. Here we show that in strongly phase-mismatched nonlinear frequency conversion crystals the pump pulse can experience a large and extremely broadband self-defocusing cascaded Kerr-like nonlinearity. The large cascaded nonlinearity is ensured through interaction with the largest quadratic tensor element in the crystal, and the strong phase-mismatch ensures an ultrafast nonlinear response with an octave-spanning bandwidth. We verify this experimentally by showing few-cycle soliton compression with noncritical cascaded second-harmonic generation: Energetic 47 fs infrared pulses are compressed in a just 1-mm long bulk lithium niobate crystal to 17 fs (under 4 optical cycles) with 80% efficiency, and upon further propagation an octave-spanning supercontinuum is observed. Such ultrafast cascading is expected to occur for a broad range of pump wavelengths spanning the near- and mid-IR using standard nonlinear crystals.

Enhancing The Optical Nonlinearity By 1-D Thin-Film Photonic Crystals With Kerr Defect Cavities

Abstract:In this paper, we study the linear and nonlinear responses of 1-D photonic bandgap (PBG) structures. We show that, the nonlinear interaction can be greatly enhanced by the use of Kerr defect modes in a I D dielectric photonic crystal structure, such as low-intensity histability and multistability, and by optimizing the design of the layer sequence. 1-D PBG structure can also be promising candidate as low-intensity nonlinear phase shifter. Nonlinear z-scan measurements of a 3-cavity thin-film PBG sample show that the nonlinearity is enhanced over the native material by a factor over 30, while maintaining a bandwidth greater than 1T Hz, which is great for all-optical switching.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive the exact dispersion relation of one dimensional periodic coupled-resonator optical waveguides of finite length, from which the reduced group velocity of light is obtained. We show that the group index strongly depends on the number of cavities in the system, especially for operation at the center frequency. The nonlinear phase sensitivity shows an enhancement proportional to the square of the group index ( or light slowing ratio). Aperiodic coupled ring-resonator optical waveguides with optimized linear properties are then synthesized to give an almost ideal nonlinear phase shift response. For a given application and bandwidth requirement, the nonlinear sensitivity can be increased by either decreasing resonator length or by using higher-order structures. The impact of optical loss, including linear and two-photon absorption is discussed in post-analysis. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.
Towards compact phase-matched and waveguided nonlinear optics in atomically layered semiconductors

Abstract:Nonlinear frequency conversion provides essential tools for light generation, photon entanglement, and manipulation. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess huge nonlinear susceptibilities and 3R-stacked TMD crystals further combine broken inversion symmetry and aligned layering, representing ideal candidates to boost the nonlinear optical gain with minimal footprint. Here, we report on the efficient frequency conversion of 3R-MoS2, revealing the evolution of its exceptional second-order nonlinear processes along the ordinary (in-plane) and extraordinary (out-of-plane) directions. By measuring second harmonic generation (SHG) of 3R-MoS2 with various thickness - from monolayer (~0.65 nm) to bulk (~1 {\mu}m) - we present the first measurement of the in-plane SHG coherence length (~530 nm) at 1520 nm and achieve record nonlinear optical enhancement from a van der Waals material, >10^4 stronger than a monolayer. It is found that 3R-MoS2 slabs exhibit similar conversion efficiencies of lithium niobate, but within propagation lengths >100-fold shorter at telecom wavelengths. Furthermore, along the extraordinary axis, we achieve broadly tunable SHG from 3R-MoS2 in a waveguide geometry, revealing the coherence length in such structure for the first time. We characterize the full refractive index spectrum and quantify both birefringence components in anisotropic 3R-MoS2 crystals with near-field nano-imaging. Empowered with these data we assess the intrinsic limits of the conversion efficiency and nonlinear optical processes in 3R-MoS2 attainable in waveguide geometries. Our analysis highlights the potential of 3R-stacked TMDs for integrated photonics, providing critical parameters for designing highly efficient on-chip nonlinear optical devices including periodically poled structures, resonators, compact optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers, and optical quantum circuits.
