Abstract:The present work describes natural rubber-based composites filled with alkali-treated jute fiber and nano-silica particles at different loading amounts of 2.5 and 5 phr (per hundred rubber) of nano-silica, each containing fiber amounts of 0, 1, 2.5, and 5 phr. The composites were prepared using two roll mill machine and then vulcanized on a heating hydraulic press. The interaction between various components was analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and surface morphology was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. The highest value of tensile strength was obtained at 2.5 phr of fiber loading. Although, its value steadily decreased when the nano-silica amount was changed from 0 to 2.5 and then up to 5 phr. Also, tear strength was found to be increased with the fiber amount and the value diminished when nano-silica was added. The experimental data for tensile and tear strength were calculated statistically, and the responses were verified using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Further, optimization of both responses was carried out using (4 × 3) factorial design and analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM). The optimized composition was 3.37 phr (fiber) and 2.87 phr (nano-silica) having tensile strength of 18.84 MPa which was higher than that of the neat sample (12.71 MPa). Also, the tear strength (44.25 N mm −1 ) at the optimized composition was increased from that of the neat sample (24.56 N mm −1 ). The thermal stability of the composites was up to 320 °C. It was concluded that the reinforcement of jute fiber and nano-silica in natural rubber matrix resulted in a significant upgrade in the tensile and tear strength of the composites.
