Abstract:During the first part of the Martian year (Ls = 50°–160°) a phenomenon occurs on Mars in the tropical and equatorial regions (30°N–10°S) known as the Aphelion Cloud Belt (ACB). During this time, there is prominent formation and diurnal variability of water ice clouds. Limited empirical attempts have been made to characterize the magnitude of radiative flux contributions from clouds to nighttime surface temperatures. In this work, we estimated the infrared (IR) flux contribution at ground level from the clouds by comparing surface temperature data from the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) onboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) to calculated temperatures using the KRC numerical thermal model. We then generated a database of IR fluxes at the ground contributed by clouds spanning the entirety of the tropical and equatorial regions as a function of Solar Longitude (Ls) on Mars in one degree bins. We compared results with work presented elsewhere in the literature and found good agreement. We also found that temporal trends followed the general established range for the ACB but our analysis demonstrated the peak ACB values occurred at later times (Ls = 100°–140°) than previously published data sets using water ice opacity retrievals (Ls = 90°–110°). This database may be used in comparison to calculated Global Climate Model fluxes as well as a lookup tool for more precise estimation of surface and subsurface thermal environments in these regions.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Machine learning techniques, showing high automation and efficiency in handling large amounts of observation data, have been applied to predict the thermal inertia of Mars from surface kinetic temperatures. We created a large data set from well-established thermal models. Using this data set, we trained random forest (RF) models using surface kinetic temperatures, time of day, and other five accessible parameters as inputs to the model. The model performances for different local times were analysed and the characteristics of derived thermal inertia in typical regions on Mars were discussed. It is found that it is feasible and reliable to predict the thermal inertia of Mars using the well-trained RF. The RF predictions reflect the thermal signatures of Mars and show good agreement with previous retrievals. When using the nighttime data to make predictions, the RF model shows the best performance compared with those at other times of day. We also classified thermal inertia into four units: low, intermediate, relatively large, and large thermal inertia, and the RF model works for all four units. The predictive ability of the RF is also demonstrated for five representative regions on Mars, where the RF predictions are in good agreement with the bolometric nighttime thermal inertia from the thermal emission spectrometer. More importantly, the RF model provides a rapid retrieval of thermal inertia and speeds up the thermal analysis in upcoming Mars exploration missions with substantial data.

Abstract:Condensation and sublimation of ices at the surface of the planet is a key part of both the Martian H$_2$O and CO$_2$ cycles, either from a seasonal or diurnal aspect. While most of the ice is located within the polar caps, surface frost is known to be formed during nighttime down to equatorial latitudes. Here, we use data from the Emirates Mars Infrared Spectrometer (EMIRS) onboard the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) to monitor the diurnal and seasonal evolution of the ices at the surface of Mars over almost one Martian year. The unique local time coverage provided by the instrument allows us to observe the apparition of equatorial CO$_2$ frost in the second half of the Martian night around the equinoxes, to its sublimation at sunrise.

Observations of Water Frost on Mars with THEMIS: Application to the Presence of Brines and the Stability of (Sub)Surface Water Ice

Abstract:Characterizing the exchange of water between the Martian atmosphere and the (sub)surface is a major challenge for understanding the mechanisms that regulate the water cycle. Here we present a new dataset of water ice detected on the Martian surface with the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS). The detection is based on the correlation between bright blue-white patterns in visible images and a temperature measured in the infrared that is too warm to beassociated with CO2 ice and interpreted instead as water ice. Using this method, we detect ice down to 21.4°S, 48.4°N, on the pole-facing slopes at mid-latitudes, and on any surface orientation poleward of 45° latitude. Water ice observed with THEMIS is most likely seasonal rather than diurnal. Our dataset is consistent with near-infrared spectroscopic data predictions by the Mars Planetary Climate Model. The water frost average temperature is 170 K, and the maximum temperature measured is 243 K, lower than the water ice melting point. We show that the melting of pure water ice on the surface is unlikely due to cooling by latent heat during its sublimation. However, 243 THEMIS images show frosts that are hot enough to form brines if salts are present on the surface. The water vapor pressure at the surface, calculated from the ice temperature, indicates a dry atmosphere in early spring, during the recession of the CO2 ice cap. When it sublimes, the frost acts as a vapor source that is wetter than the near-surface atmosphere, which stabilizes the subsurface ice.

Abstract:Abstract The MIRS infrared spectrometer is part of the scientific payload of JAXA’s Martian Moon eXploration (MMX) mission. From the reflected sunlight by the planetary surfaces, MIRS will provide information on the Mars atmosphere and the mineralogy and chemistry of its moons. Spectra carried out by the instrument (0.9-3.6 Âμm) include the thermal emission from the surface, which needs to be modeled and removed to extract the compositional information. In this study, to find an efficient and rapid way to thermally correct infrared data, we developed a simple thermal emission correction based on black body fits, and quantify its relative error. To test the method, we generated synthetic spectra of Phobos by using a thermophysical model. We found that the method can produce reflectance spectra with only a few percent errors, although some under-correction of the thermal contribution is observed. Compositional information may still be retrieved through the position of absorption bands, despite the thermal emission correction can leave some uncertainties in its strength. We conclude that the method could be used for a first and quick analysis for interpretation of the MIRS data. We also applied our thermal correction methodology to real CRISM observations of Phobos. The method looks reliable with a satisfactory removal of the thermal contribution, confirms the presence of an absorption band centered around 2.8 Âμm, and reveals an apparent absorption at 3.2 Âμm. However, we are not able to confirm the reality of the 3.2 Âμm band at this stage, because of the presence of an artifact in CRISM data.

Martian cloud climatology and life cycle extracted from Mars Express OMEGA spectral images

Abstract:We extracted a Martian water-ice cloud climatology from OMEGA data covering 7 Martian years (MY 26-32). We derived two products, the Reversed Ice Cloud Index (ICIR) and the Percentage of Cloudy Pixels (PCP), indicating the mean cloud thickness and nebulosity over a regular grid (1° longitude x 1° latitude x 1° Ls x 1 h Local Time). The ICIR has been shown to be a proxy of the water-ice column derived from the Mars Climate Database. The PCP confirms the location of the main cloud structures mapped with the ICIR, and gives a more accurate image of the cloud cover. We observed a denser cloud coverage over Hellas Planitia, Lunae Planum and over large volcanoes in the aphelion belt. For the first time, thanks to the fact that Mars Express is not in Sun-synchronous orbit, we can explore the cloud diurnal cycle at a given season by combining 7 years of observations. However, because of the eccentric orbit, the temporal coverage remains limited. Other limitations of the dataset are its small size, the difficult distinction between ice clouds and frosts, and the impact of surface albedo on data uncertainty. We could nevertheless study the diurnal cloud life cycle by averaging the data over larger regions: from specific topographic features (covering a few degrees in longitude and latitude) up to large climatic bands (all longitudes). We found that in the tropics around northern summer solstice, the diurnal thermal tide modulates the abundance of clouds, which is reduced around noon. At northern midlatitudes, clouds corresponding to the edge of the north polar hood are observed mainly in the morning and around noon during northern winter (Ls=260-30°). Over Chryse Planitia, low lying morning fogs dissipate earlier and earlier in the afternoon during northern winter. Over Argyre, clouds are present over all daytime during two periods, around Ls = 30 and 160°.

Abstract:Diurnal and seasonal variations in soil and surface temperature measured with the HP3 thermal probe and radiometer of NASA's InSight Mars mission are reported. At a representative depth of 10–20 cm, an average temperature of 217.5 K was found, varying by 5.3–6.7 K during a sol and by 13.3 K during the seasons. From the damping of the temperature variation with depth and the phase shift, a thermal diffusivity of (3.93 ± 0.39) × 10−8 m2 /s was derived for the upper ∼ 10 cm from the diurnal temperature variation and of (3.63 ± 0.53) × 10−8 m2 /s for the ∼ 40 cm depth range of the mole from the annual temperature variation. Using published thermal conductivity and inertia values together with the diffusivities, soil densities of 1,470 and 1,730 kg/m3 were derived for these depths. The temperatures allow the deliquescence of thin films of brine, the efflorescence of which may explain the cemented duricrust observed.

Abstract:This paper is the first paper of a series that will present the derivation of the modal mineralogy of Mars (M3 project) at a global scale from the near-infrared dataset acquired by the imaging spectrometer OMEGA (Observatoire pour la Min\'eralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activit\'e) on board ESA/Mars Express. The objective is to create and provide a global 3-D image-cube of Mars at 32px/{\deg} covering most of Mars surface. This product has several advantages. First, it can be used to instantaneously extract atmospheric- and aerosol-corrected near-infrared (NIR) spectra from any location on Mars. Second, several new data maps can be built as discussed here. That includes new global mineral distributions, quantitative mineral abundance distributions and maps of Martian surface chemistry (wt % oxide) detailed in a companion paper (Riu et al., submitted). Here we present the method to derive the global hyperspectral cube from several hundred millions of spectra. Global maps of some mafic minerals are then shown, and compared to previous works.
Surface Properties of Asteroids from Mid-Infrared Observations and Thermophysical Modeling

Abstract:The subject of this work is the physical characterization of asteroids, focusing on the thermal inertia of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). Thermal inertia governs the Yarkovsky effect, a non-gravitational force which significantly alters the orbits of asteroids up to \sim 20 km in diameter. Yet, very little has previously been known about the thermal inertia of small asteroids including NEAs. Observational and theoretical work is reported. The thermal emission of asteroids has been observed in the mid-infrared (5-35 {\mu}m) wavelength range using the Spitzer Space Telescope and the 3.0m IRTF. A detailed thermophysical model (TPM) has been developed and extensively tested; this is the first detailed TPM shown to be applicable to NEA data. Our main result is the determination of the thermal inertia of 5 NEAs, increasing the total number of NEAs with measured thermal inertia to 6. For two of our targets, previously available estimates are refined. Our results allow the first determination of the typical thermal inertia of NEAs, which is around 300 J s^{-1/2} K^{-1} m^{-2}, larger than the typical thermal inertia of large main-belt asteroids (MBAs) by more than an order of magnitude. In particular, thermal inertia appears to increase with decreasing asteroid diameter. Our results have been used by colleagues to estimate the size dependence of the Yarkovsky effect, thus explaining the apparent difference in the size-frequency distribution of NEAs and similarly sized MBAs. Thermal inertia is a very sensitive indicator for the presence or absence of particulate material on the surface. Our results indicate that even sub-km asteroids are covered with coarse regolith.

Survey of remnant seasonal water ice patches at southern polar Mars

Abstract:On Mars it is possible that after the recession of the seasonal polar ice cap, small icy patches left behind in shady places due to the low thermal conductivity of the Martian surface and atmosphere, are met by direct sunlight during the summer. These patches might warm up substantially and we analyzed below how could a liquid phase emerge in these places, surveying HiRISE images. 730 images that fit the selection criteria of location and season were analyzed, and we identified 148 images with smaller ice patches on them. Their separation from other bright patches, like clouds or lighter shades of layers and rocks were possible by their bluish color and strong connection to local topographic shading. These areas range between 140° and 200° solar longitude in the latitude band between -40° and -60°. The diameter of the ice patches ranges between 1.5-300 meters, and they remain on the surface even after the seasonal polar cap has passed over the area for the duration range of 19-133 martian days. With the help of The Mars Climate Database (MCD) we simulated the surface temperature and predicted CO2 and H2O ice cover at 22 analyzed areas. Judging by the models, the average noon temperature does not reach the melting point of water, which is 273 K, therefore the occurrence of liquid water on the macroscopic scale is highly unlikely, however there is a possibility that an interfacial premelting of ice (a few nanometers thick waterlayer) might form between the layered and the water ice.

Seasonal thaws under mid-to-low pressure atmospheres on Early Mars

Abstract:Despite decades of scientific research on the subject, the climate of the first 1.5 Gyr of Mars history has not been fully understood yet. Especially challenging is the need to reconcile the presence of liquid water for extended periods of time on the martian surface with the comparatively low insolation received by the planet, a problem which is known as the Faint Young Sun (FYS) Paradox. In this paper we use ESTM, a latitudinal energy balance model with enhanced prescriptions for meridional heat diffusion, and the radiative transfer code EOS to investigate how seasonal variations of temperature can give rise to local conditions which are conductive to liquid water runoffs. We include the effects of the martian dichotomy, a northern ocean with either 150 or 550 m of Global Equivalent Layer (GEL) and simplified CO$_2$ or H$_2$O clouds. We find that 1.3-to-2.0 bar CO$_2$-dominated atmospheres can produce seasonal thaws due to inefficient heat redistribution, provided that the eccentricity and the obliquity of the planet are sufficiently different from zero. We also studied the impact of different values for the argument of perihelion. When local favorable conditions exist, they nearly always persist for $>15\%$ of the martian year. These results are obtained without the need for additional greenhouse gases (e.g. H$_2$, CH$_4$) or transient heat-injecting phenomena (e.g. asteroid impacts, volcanic eruptions). Moderate amounts (0.1 to 1\%) of CH$_4$ significantly widens the parameter space region in which seasonal thaws are possible.

Observations of a new stabilizing effect for polar water ice on Mars

Abstract:Using the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM), we map the temporal variability of water ice absorption bands over the near-polar ice mound in Louth crater, Mars. The absorption band depth of water ice at 1.5 microns can be used as a proxy for ice grain size and so sudden reductions can time any switches from ablation to condensation. A short period of deposition on the outer edge of the ice mound during late spring coincides with the disappearance of seasonal water frost from the surrounding regolith suggesting that this deposition is locally sourced. The outer unit at Louth ice mound differs from its central regions by being rough, finely layered, and lacking wind-blown sastrugi. This suggests we are observing a new stabilizing effect wherein the outer unit is being seasonally replenished with water ice from the surrounding regolith during spring. We observe the transport distance for water migration at Louth crater to be ~4km, and we use this new finding to address why no water ice mounds are observed in craters <9km in diameter.

Abstract:The Mars Atmosphere-Ice Coupler MAIC-2 is a simple, latitudinal model, which consists of a set of parameterisations for the surface temperature, the atmospheric water transport and the surface mass balance (condensation minus evaporation) of water ice. It is driven directly by the orbital parameters obliquity, eccentricity and solar longitude (Ls) of perihelion. Surface temperature is described by the Local Insolation Temperature (LIT) scheme, which uses a daily and latitude-dependent radiation balance. The evaporation rate of water is calculated by an expression for free convection, driven by density differences between water vapor and ambient air, the condensation rate follows from the assumption that any water vapour which exceeds the local saturation pressure condenses instantly, and atmospheric transport of water vapour is approximated by instantaneous mixing. Glacial flow of ice deposits is neglected. Simulations with constant orbital parameters show that low obliquities favour deposition of ice in high latitudes and vice versa. A transient scenario driven by a computed history of orbital parameters over the last 10 million years produces essentially monotonically growing polar ice deposits during the most recent 4 million years, and a very good agreement with the observed present-day polar layered deposits. The thick polar deposits sometimes continue in thin ice deposits which extend far into the mid latitudes, which confirms the idea of "ice ages" at high obliquity.

Thermal Vision for Soil Assessment in a Multipurpose Environmental Chamber under Martian Conditions towards Robot Navigation

Abstract:Soil assessment is important for mobile robot planning and navigation on natural and planetary environments. Terramechanic characteristics can be inferred from the thermal behaviour of soils under the influence of sunlight using remote sensors such as Long-Wave Infrared cameras. However, this behaviour is greatly affected by the low atmospheric pressures of planets such as Mars, so practical models are needed to relate robot remote sensing data on Earth to target planetary exploration conditions. This article proposes a general framework based on multipurpose environmental chambers to generate representative diurnal cycle dataset pairs that can be useful to relate the thermal behaviour of a soil on Earth to the corresponding behaviour under planetary pressure conditions using remote sensing. Furthermore, we present an application of the proposed framework to generate datasets using the UMA-Laserlab chamber, which can replicate the atmospheric \ch{CO2} composition of Mars. In particular, we analyze the thermal behaviour of four soil samples of different granularity by comparing replicated Martian surface conditions and their Earth's diurnal cycle equivalent. Results indicate a correlation between granularity and thermal inertia that is consistent with available Mars surface measurements recorded by rovers. The resulting dataset pairs, consisting of representative diurnal cycle thermal images with heater, air, and subsurface temperatures, have been made available for the scientific community.

Abstract:Thermal tides in the Martian atmosphere are analyzed using temperature profiles retrieved from nadir observations obtained by the TIRVIM Fourier-spectrometer, part of the Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). The data is selected near the northern summer solstice at solar longitude (LS) 75°-105° of Martian Year (MY) 35. The observations have a full local time coverage, which enables analyses of daily temperature anomalies. The observed zonal mean temperature is lower by 4-6K at ~100Pa, but higher towards the summer pole, compared to the LMD Mars General Circulation Model (GCM). Wave mode decomposition shows dominant diurnal tide and important semi-diurnal tide and diurnal Kelvin wave, with maximal amplitudes of 5K, 3K, and 2.5K, respectively, from tens to hundreds of Pa. The results generally agree well with the LMD Mars GCM, but with noticeable earlier phases of diurnal (~1h) and semi-diurnal (~3h) tides.

Thermal Tomography of Asteroid Surface Structure

Abstract:Knowledge of the surface thermal inertia of an asteroid can provide insight into surface structure: porous material has a lower thermal inertia than rock. We develop a means to estimate thermal inertia values of asteroids and use it to show that thermal inertia appears to increase with spin period in the case of main-belt asteroids (MBAs). Similar behavior is found on the basis of thermophysical modeling for near-Earth objects (NEOs). We interpret our results in terms of rapidly increasing material density and thermal conductivity with depth, and provide evidence that thermal inertia increases by factors of 10 (MBAs) to 20 (NEOs) within a depth of just 10 cm. Our results are consistent with a very general picture of rapidly changing material properties in the topmost regolith layers of asteroids and have important implications for calculations of the Yarkovsky effect, including its perturbation of the orbits of potentially hazardous objects and those of asteroid family members after the break-up event. Evidence of a rapid increase of thermal inertia with depth is also an important result for studies of the ejecta-enhanced momentum transfer of impacting vehicles ("kinetic impactors") in planetary defense.

Abstract:Introduction: Remnants of glacial and periglacial geomorphological features are visible up to mid-latitudes on Mars. Notably, an out-of-equilibrium &#8220;latitude-dependant mantle&#8221; extends to 30&#176; latitude in both hemispheres [1]. These patches were likely deposited as snowfall in the recent past (less than ~2Myr) in response to climate change driven by shift in obliquity, similar to Earth glacial/interglacial periods [2]. However, martian climate models usually struggle to reproduce environmental conditions required to form LDM under recent paleoclimatic orbital forcing. We present a new set of simulations with refined description of surface and sub-surface water processes and their relevance regarding the deposition and above all stability of large ice patches up to mid-latitudes in both martian hemispheres. Water-ice clouds in recent paleoclimates: As present-day martian atmosphere is extremely dry, water ice clouds have second-order effects in global climate models [6]. Modeling higher obliquity episodes, ie shifts from 25&#176; up to 35&#176;, atmospheric humidity is enhanced by polar warming and water-ice cloud become a key element of martian climate [7,8]. Their radiative effect strongly warms the atmosphere, amplifies meridional circulation and water transport toward tropical latitudes. Previous work showed that radiatively active water-ice clouds allow for the transportation and deposition of water ice patches up to mid-latitudes [7]. However, these deposits can only be perennial under extreme atmospheric dust scenarios, in order to limit summertime sublimation. Frost and ice albedo: Surface water ice has a typical albedo of 0.35 in our present-day Mars model [9]. Mid-latitude ice patches resulting from an intensified water cycle at higher obliquity would rather have a 0.7 albedo, due to less dust content and fresh snowfall. By limiting solar heating, this albedo parametrization favors the persistence of mid-latitude ice throughout summer. Latent heat of sublimation: The latent heat of water sublimation has been neglected in present-day climate models, because of the low amount of water and thus energy flux involved. The sublimation of water was hitherto simply computed using surface temperature and water vapor equilibrium. Similarly to the frost albedo effect, taking into account the latent heat of water becomes relevant when the water cycle, and thus the energy flux involved, is intensified at higher obliquity. It also favors the year-long persistence of mid-latitude ice by adding an energy cost to sublimation, which decreases surface heating. Nudging subsurface thermal inertia: Martian soil&#8217;s thermal inertia is driven by the presence of subsurface perennial water ice, regulated by long-term equilibrium with water vapor [10]. This equilibrium is modified with the water cycle at higher obliquity. Instead of waiting for natural equilibrium to occur, we artificially accelerate the relocation of subsurface water ice, and accordingly increase subsurface thermal inertia. Subsurface ice inventory is computed each year using annual mean water vapor, as proposed in [10]. Conclusions with idealized orbital forcing: The recent excursions to 35&#176; obliquity are thought to be the main drivers of martian glaciations. We use our new parametrizations along with idealized orbital forcing, that is a 35&#176; obliquity and a null-excentricity, to show that the effect of water-ice clouds, frost albedo and latent heat of sublimation allow for the preservation of mid-latitude ice deposits when equilibrium is reached. In the last ~2 Myr on Mars, obliquity has reached 35&#176; a dozen times, for approximately 1000 years each time [11]. Diurnal variation of the surface temperature of Mars with the Emirates Mars Mission: A comparison with Curiosity and Perseverance rover measurements

Abstract:For the first time, the Emirates Mars Infrared Spectrometer (EMIRS) instrument on board the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) "Hope", is providing us with the temperature measurements of Mars at all local times covering most of the planet. As a result, it is now possible to compare surface temperature measurements made from orbit with those from the surface by rovers during the same time period. We use data of diurnal temperature variation from the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) suite on board the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) "Curiosity" rover, and the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) suite on board the Mars 2020 "Perseverance" rover, between June and August 2021 and compare them with EMIRS observations and estimates of the Mars Climate Database (MCD) model. We show that although the overall trend of temperature variation is in excellent agreement across missions, EMIRS measurements are systematically lower at night compared to Mars 2020. The lower spatial resolution of EMIRS compared to the rovers and consequently lower average thermal inertia of the observed regions in this particular case primarily contributed to this discrepancy, among other factors. We discuss the implications of these results in improving our understanding of the Martian climate which would lead to better modeling of local weather prediction, useful for future robotic and crewed missions.

Abstract:The MEDA instrument on Mars 2020 has five Atmospheric Temperature Sensors at two altitudes (0.84 and 1.45 m) plus a Thermal InfraRed Sensor that measures temperatures on the surface and at ∼40 m. We analyze the measurements from these sensors to describe the evolution of temperatures in Jezero up to mission sol 400 (solar longitude LS = 13° − 203°). The diurnal thermal cycle is characterized by a daytime convective period and a nocturnal stable atmosphere with a variable thermal inversion. We find a linear relationship between the daytime temperature fluctuations and the vertical thermal gradient with temperature fluctuations that peak at noon with typical values of 2.5 K at 1.45 m. In the late afternoon ( ∼17:00 Local True Solar Time), the atmosphere becomes vertically isothermal with vanishing fluctuations. We observe very small seasonal changes in air temperatures during the period analyzed. This is related to small changes in solar irradiation and dust opacity. However, we find significant changes in surface temperatures that are related to the variety of thermal inertias of the terrains explored along the traverse of Perseverance. These changes strongly influence the vertical thermal gradient, breaking the nighttime thermal inversion over terrains of high thermal inertia. We explore possible detections of atmospheric tides on near‐surface temperatures and we examine variations in temperatures over time‐scales of a few sols that could be indicative of atmospheric waves affecting near‐surface temperatures. We also discuss temperatures during a regional dust storm at LS = 153° − 156° that simultaneously warmed the near surface atmosphere while cooling the surface.
