Abstract:The article provides an analytical overview of the state of global water resources and their use in the world. The focus is on the most important component of water resources – freshwater, which on the planet is only 2.5 % of the total. The most accessible renewable water resources are river runoff, which is distributed unevenly on the surface of the planet: Asia (32 %), South America (28 %), North America (18 %), Africa (9 %), Europe (7%), Australia and Oceania (6 %). Along with the characteristics of the known components of freshwater resources (river runoff, groundwater, glaciers), attention is also focused on trends in attracting unconventional sources (recovered wastewater or gray water, desalinated, specially collected rainwater). The total use of fresh water in the world is only 9 % of the total river flow of the planet. At the same time, the problem of water scarcity was included in the list of the World Economic Forum 2015, as one of the global risks in terms of the potential impact on human society in the next decade. Among the causes of global water, scarcity are geographical and socio-economic. Geographical reasons are the spatial and temporal (seasonal) mismatch of the demand for fresh water and its availability. Socio-economic reasons are the growth of the world’s population, urbanization, improving living standards, changes in consumption patterns, and an increase in irrigated land. The latter has become key to the growth of global water demand. Experts forecast that the limited access to fresh water in 2050 can be felt by 3.3 billion more people than in 2000. The article gives examples of a methodology for the hydrological assessment of water scarcity (calculation of the ratio of the volume of annual renewable water resources to the population) and the methodology of economic and geographical assessment. Other approaches to assessing water resources by creating new paradigms (water – blue, green, virtual, water footprint) have been characterized. Throughout the history of mankind, there have been many conflicts related to water. Active water cooperation between countries today reduces the risk of military conflicts. This conclusion was made after studying transboundary water relations in more than 200joint river basins, covering 148 countries. The right to safe water and sanitation is a fundamental right of everyone (UN, 2010). Therefore, among the 17 sustainable development goals adopted by the UN for implementation for the period 2015-2030, Global Goal 6 “Clean Water and Good Sanitary Conditions” is aimed at ensuring sustainable management of water resources and sanitation for all. This will save people from diseases, and society will be given the opportunity to be more productive in economic terms.

Abstract:Universal access to safe drinking water for all is a key target of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6. However, how water accessibility improvement impacts domestic water demand and surface-water deficit (the quantity of water demand that exceeds surface-water availability) are poorly known due to uncertainty and variability in domestic water use intensities (WUIdom). Here, we developed a data-driven model to create global gridded maps of historical and future WUIdom, constrained by 1758 survey-based records spanning 220 administrative units. The results show that water accessibility improvement dominated the growth in WUIdom over the period 1990-2015, particularly in developing and least-developed economies. Achieving universal water accessibility by 2030 may lead to an additional growth in global mean WUIdom by 21.7 L capita 1 day(-1). Additional 88.3 million people, from 14 developing countries and 9 least-developed countries, may move into domestic surface-water deficit. Another 16% of global irrigated areas would be at risk of irrigation surface-water deficit mainly in South Asia, Central Asia, and North Africa. These findings imply the need of spatially flexible set of actions to achieve global universal water accessibility by 2030 without worsening surface-water deficit.

Abstract:Safe drinking water access is a human right, but data on safely managed drinking water services (SMDWS) is lacking for more than half of the global population. We estimate SMDWS use in 135 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) at subnational levels with a geospatial modeling approach, combining existing household survey data with available global geospatial datasets. We estimate that only one in three people used SMDWS in LMICs in 2020 and identified fecal contamination as the primary limiting factor affecting almost half of the population of LMICs. Our results are relevant for raising awareness about the challenges and limitations of current global monitoring approaches and demonstrating how globally available geospatial data can be leveraged to fill data gaps and identify priority areas in LMICs.

Abstract:The future adequacy of freshwater resources is difficult to assess, owing to a complex and rapidly changing geography of water supply and use. Numerical experiments combining climate model outputs, water budgets, and socioeconomic information along digitized river networks demonstrate that (i) a large proportion of the world's population is currently experiencing water stress and (ii) rising water demands greatly outweigh greenhouse warming in defining the state of global water systems to 2025. Consideration of direct human impacts on global water supply remains a poorly articulated but potentially important facet of the larger global change question.

Abstract:Protecting the world’s freshwater resources requires diagnosing threats over a broad range of scales, from global to local. Here we present the first worldwide synthesis to jointly consider human and biodiversity perspectives on water security using a spatial framework that quantifies multiple stressors and accounts for downstream impacts. We find that nearly 80% of the world’s population is exposed to high levels of threat to water security. Massive investment in water technology enables rich nations to offset high stressor levels without remedying their underlying causes, whereas less wealthy nations remain vulnerable. A similar lack of precautionary investment jeopardizes biodiversity, with habitats associated with 65% of continental discharge classified as moderately to highly threatened. The cumulative threat framework offers a tool for prioritizing policy and management responses to this crisis, and underscores the necessity of limiting threats at their source instead of through costly remediation of symptoms in order to assure global water security for both humans and freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract:This paper explores the physical, social, and environmental dimensions of how climate change impacts affect drinking water safety in a rural context in developing countries. Climate impacts, such as contamination or the reduced availability of preferred drinking water sources due to climate-related hazards, threaten water safety in rural areas and these impacts will likely worsen as climate change accelerates. We qualitatively examined these impacts in a community in rural Vanuatu using three approaches side-by-side: adaptation, vulnerability, and resilience. We employed a mixed methods case study methodology that combined semi-structured interviews, technological and environmental surveys, and observations. We demonstrate the influence of physical infrastructure design, social structures mediating water access, and the availability of multiple sustainable water resources on water safety with respect to climate impacts. We also show how the initial problematization of how climate affects water safety can influence subsequent actions to address, or overlook, issues of infrastructure design and maintenance, social equity, and natural resource management for water access. Improvements to rural drinking water safety management in the context of climate change should take a pluralistic approach, informed by different conceptualizations of climate impacts, to account for the varied causal pathways of reduced water safety for different members of a community.

Abstract:Groundwater provides more than half of all water for drinking and irrigation worldwide. Monitoring and managing groundwater resources is essential to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. However, groundwater resources need to be better monitored. We explored practical approaches to improve groundwater monitoring for informed decision-making, focusing on low- and middle-income country settings. Case studies from a 2023 UNC Water and Health Conference side event highlighted innovative approaches, including open-source data modeling, groundwater monitoring in humanitarian contexts, and using in situ sensors to monitor drought resilience. The case studies described field data integration, remote sensing, and technology (e.g., Modflow-USG, ModelMuse, Drought Resilience Impact Platform). Barriers to groundwater data use were identified by side event participants, including inadequate data access, insufficient collaboration and leadership, and challenges in integrating diverse data and technology. Side event recommendations included creating a central groundwater monitoring data repository, building greater hydrogeology capacity in the WaSH sector, and increasing funding for data collection and monitoring. We urge government leaders to develop regulations and build internal capacity for sustainable groundwater management. This comprehensive approach aims to address challenges and promote informed decision-making for the long-term sustainability of groundwater resources.

Abstract:Current definitions of 'safe' drinking water and their inclusion in metrics for monitoring progress towards SDG 6.1 (universal access to safe drinking water) are inadequate as they fail to account for the way safety is understood and enacted in people's day-to-day lives. The aim of this study was to characterise the factors that influence what people understand by 'safe' drinking water and to identify opportunities to account for non-scientific/alternative ways of understanding 'safety' in the provision of drinking water. We used a case study from Scotland where residents have challenged water professionals over the safety of their drinking water. Semi-structured interviews (n = 30) were conducted with people involved in this case, and each participant was asked to draw 'safe drinking water'. Although many differences between the stakeholders were identified, the drawing exercise revealed that the residents and water professionals alike believed that consumer satisfaction was vital for believing it was safe. Overall, we found that different knowledges, priorities and epistemologies contributed to different perspectives on drinking water safety. In the future, we propose that more transdisciplinary and citizen-centric ways of working are adopted to improve outcomes in the pursuit of SDG 6.1.

Abstract:A water crisis has prompted the Chinese government to develop an ambitious water conservancy plan. However, the plan may not achieve water sustainability and may cause unintended environmental and socioeconomic consequences, unless it accounts for complex human-nature interactions ( 1 ). Water shortages, for example, force people to find alternatives, such as treatment facilities, whose land and energy requirements aggravate food and energy production, which need large amounts of water. Other nations face similar challenges and share real water from China along international rivers and/or virtual water through trade. Water problems are particularly challenging in China, which has the largest population, fastest-growing economy, rising water demand, relatively scarce water, dated infrastructure, and inadequate governance. We highlight China's water crisis and plan, and then offer recommendations.

Abstract:The quantity of freshwater available per person in the world has been and continues to decrease due to a combination of factors, including population increase, water pollution, inadequate planning and management of transboundary and other shared waters, and inefficient operation of water supply and distribution systems. Consequently, there is an increasing potential for water scarcity, crisis and associated conflicts around the world in the future, especially in developing regions, if the current trend in water consumption and management practices continues. In this fast-changing and highly-interconnected world, the problems related to water crisis and conflicts are numerous, complicated and challenging. Efforts to effectively resolve these problems require a clear vision of the future water availability and demand as well as new ways of thinking, developing and implementing water planning and management practices. The present study attempts to offer a comprehensive account of the above issues and also some important guidelines for advancing research in this direction. Assessments of past, present and future statuses of the world's water are reviewed. Major water initiatives and their targets, successes and failures are highlighted. The urgent need for new ways of thinking, including an integrated framework (encompassing both the “hard sciences” and the “soft sciences”), water education and training and communication of the water issues and our studies to the different stakeholders in the water sector, is also discussed. Abstract:Abstract Climate change-driven water scarcity will lead to inequitable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) access. However, current research in Zambia has ignored linking climate science dimensions to WASH access programs, thus limiting WASH-related climate action across the country. Here, we combine analyses of in situ datasets, modeling techniques, and systematic literature reviews to provide a solid climate science basis for WASH–climate action in Zambia. We find that in a warm near future climate, the stretch along the Copperbelt–Livingstone railroad from the north to the south of the country is expected to record an increase in heavy rainfall single-day events ranging between 50 and ≥150 mm. As such, bacterial diseases, such as cholera outbreaks, are expected to increase, especially in the Copperbelt, Central, Lusaka, Southern, and the Eastern Provinces. Models further predict a drier Zambia in the near and far future of up to 12 days year−1, suggesting a higher risk of increased aridity which will compound challenges to the provision of safe drinking water. The projected rapid population growth in these regions will also heighten the challenges of accessing safe drinking water. Strategic investments in enhancing WASH access in these areas should be considered a matter of urgency.

Abstract:<p>The availability of planetary‐scale geospatial datasets that can support the study of water‐related disasters in the Anthropocene is rapidly growing. We review 124 global and free datasets allowing spatial (and temporal) analyses of floods, droughts and their interactions with human societies. Our collection of datasets is available in a descriptive list for download at <a class="linkBehavior" href="https://zenodo.org/record/3368882">https://zenodo.org/record/3368882</a>. The purpose of providing an overview of datasets across a wide range of hydrological and socioeconomic variables is to highlight research opportunities across scientific disciplines for the study of the water‐society interplay. Our collection of datasets confirms that the availability of geospatial data capturing hydrological hazards and exposure is far more mature than those capturing vulnerability aspects. We do not only highlight the unprecedented opportunities associated with these global datasets for the study of water‐related disasters in the Anthropocene, but also discuss the challenges associated with their exploitation. Abstract:The purpose of this report is to open up a dialogue on an issue that could put the lives and livelihoods of millions of people at risk in the foreseeable future. This issue is water – water as a vital resource and as a potential crisis driver in the Hindu-Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. In seeking to foster that dialogue, the report has three specific objectives: [i] to survey various types of potential water-related hazards and crisis drivers that could affect the region; [ii] to foster new types of alliances – including greater attention to what will be called humanitarian policy-maker/ science dialogues – for addressing the threats that the region may face; and [iii] to propose first steps that must be taken now to lead to prevention and preparedness measures commensurate with the nature and scale of threats facing the region.

Abstract:The inadequate availability of clean water presents systemic risks to human health, food production, energy generation and ecosystem functioning. Here we evaluate population exposure to current and future water scarcity (both excluding and including water quality) using a coupled global hydrological and surface water quality model. We find that 55% of the global population are currently exposed to clean water scarcity at least one month per year, compared with 47% considering water quantity aspects only. Exposure to clean water scarcity at least one month per year increases to 56–66% by the end of the century. Increases in future exposure are typically largest in developing countries—particularly in sub-Saharan Africa—driven by a combination of water quantity and quality aspects. Strong reductions in both anthropogenic water use and pollution are therefore necessary to minimize the impact of future clean water scarcity on humans and the environment.

Abstract:Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6.1 – universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water – is a critical global challenge. This study contributes to this aim by analyzing the functionality and sustainability of rural water boreholes in Nigeria. It employs GIS mapping, Spearman's rho correlation analysis, and interviews across 1,696 communities to investigate borehole failure dynamics, the impact of multidimensional poverty index (MPI) on water access, technical failure causes, and the influence of ownership on functionality. Findings show that while 49.8% of communities lack improved water sources, 25.5 benefit from functional boreholes, and 24.5 grapple with failures. This study reveals a complex relationship between MPI and water access, with community ownership associated with better functionality. Consequently, the study proposes holistic strategies, emphasizing community mapping and smart infrastructure, to enhance water system sustainability. Although the study is centered in Nigeria, its insights are applicable to regions with similar socio-economic conditions, contributing to the global pursuit of sustainable water access in alignment with SDG 6.1.

Abstract:Floods, droughts, and rainfall‐induced landslides are hydro‐hazards that affect millions of people every year. Anticipation, mitigation, and adaptation to these hazards is increasingly outpaced by their changing magnitude and frequency due to climate change. A key question for society is whether the research we pursue has the potential to address knowledge gaps and to reduce potential future hazard impacts where they will be most severe. We use natural language processing, based on a new climate hazard taxonomy, to review, identify, and geolocate out of 100 million abstracts those that deal with hydro‐hazards. We find that the spatial distribution of study areas is mostly defined by human activity, national wealth, data availability, and population distribution. Hydro‐hazard events that impact large numbers of people lead to increased research activity, but with a strong disparity between low‐ and high‐income countries. We find that 100 times more people need to be affected by hazards before low‐income countries reach comparable research activity to high‐income countries. This "Wealth over Woe" bias needs to be addressed by enabling and targeting research on hydro‐hazards in highly impacted and under‐researched regions, or in those sufficiently socio‐hydrologically similar. We urgently need to reduce knowledge base biases to mitigate and adapt to changing hydro‐hazards if we want to achieve a sustainable and equitable future for all global citizens.

Abstract:Ensuring universal and equitable access to water and sanitation for all by 2030 (United Nations Agenda 2030, Sustainable Development Goal or SDG 6) is one of the most important goals for the world. 785 million people do not still have access to basic drinking water services. This burden disproportionately affects women, who are often responsible for collecting water from distant sources in regions with limited or no water supply systems. Understanding this important spatial patterns of socio-demographic and hydrological factors is key to address the interlinked challenges of gender equality and water security under SDG 5 ('Achieve gender equality') and SDG 6. While the challenges women face in securing water are widely recognized, quantitative analysis of gender inequality in global water security has not previously been studied. Here, we present, to our knowledge the first global assessment of gender inequality in water security. We measured water security by examining both water access and water scarcity (hereafter, water stress), incorporating population data for working-age individuals and children. We integrated this hydrological and demographic information at a spatial resolution of approximately 10 km from 2001 to 2014 when the information is available. Our results showed that more working-age women than men experience poor water access, particularly in Africa. In addition, women in countries with high water insecurity, defined as high water stress and poor water access—such as Burkina Faso, Togo, and Somalia—primary conduct water collection. Our results indicate significant gender-based differences in water security, with women frequently remaining in rural areas characterized by poor water access. These inequalities could be further intensified by climate change, socio-economic and cultural factors.

Abstract:Despite the recent improvements, there is still a problem of access to WASH services. This problem access is linked to poverty and inequality, which in turn cause difficulties in accessing water, thus creating a vicious cycle. This article analyses this vicious cycle using data from international organisations related to these issues. These data show how the lack of water access leads to limitations for households, which are deprived of employment or/and education due to the difficulty in obtaining water. This opportunity cost is the main mechanism through which the feedback between lack of access to water and economic poverty occurs. Not being able to obtain employment or/and education makes it impossible to get out of a precarious situation, which prevents the wider society to benefit from any economic gain, which in turn slows down the achievement of the goal of guaranteeing access to water for all. The responsibility lies with national and international institutions, which should not only focus on obtaining the necessary financial resources for infrastructure improvements, but also on having adequate governance to ensure water sustainability and equity.
