Abstract:The Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS) is considered the brain and the communications backbone of the train with an important role on vehicle performances. The Next Generation TCMS (NG-TCMS) aims to overcome the embedded limitations of the existing TCMS concepts and standards from the 1990s to increase the capacity, trustworthiness, reliability, while reducing the Life Cycle Costs of trains. This paper presents an overview of the Safe4Rail-3 project activities and expected contributions to the development of the NG-TCMS, including device development and antenna simulations.

Abstract:Based on the European railway industry objectives in the scope of Shift2Rail EU programme, the work conducted in Safe4Rail (Q4/2016-Q4/2018) proposes a unified embedded platform framework and drive-by-data system integration for the definition of scalable embedded architecture which can integrate critical and non-critical rolling stock functions. The proposed architecture enables integration with other railway transportation systems and similar to aerospace IMA, relies on common computing and Ethernet networking resources. The ultimate objective is to create an integrated infrastructure which can host all hard RT, realtime and soft-time functions, and support different models of computation and communication. Such an integrated architecture will reduce lifecycle costs and system complexity of railway TCMS architectures. The key challenges in next generation TCMS are: affordability, complexity, modular certification, frequent dynamic reconfiguration, and the capability to host distributed SIL4 functions. The outcome of this work to be relevant for any future highly integrated and reconfigurable parameter-driven architectures, which require high levels of software abstraction with support for incremental certification, and rely on new advanced networking approaches related to IEEE TSN, while using the experiences from ARINC664 and SAE AS6802 standards. The Safe4Rail architecture addresses both safety and security aspects of the embedded platform, and will result in new standards for railway Ethernet networking, including the modification proposals to IEC61375.

Abstract:A Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS) is a vital part of monitoring sensors in a train. The data output of sensors is sent wirelessly to the data server for monitoring. However, as the wireless channel used to send the data is a shared public network, the transmitted data are prone to hackers and attacks. This paper proposes the Securebox architecture to manage secure data transfer from the onboard Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) to the data server in TCMS. The architecture is comprised of four main functions: network management, buffer management, data management, and security management. The architecture has been successfully developed in an HSM (Hardware Security Modul) and verified using alpha and beta software testing to form a secure TCMS. From the real-time testing phase in an electric-diesel train, the average performance of the AES-based HSM showed 55% faster time processing with unnoticed 0.1% added memory usage compared to the 3DES. The secure TCMS also withstands MITM attack and provides end-to-end data security compared to the (Mobile Station) MS to Base Station (BS) only in GSM-R.

Abstract:Railway accidents, such as collisions, conflicts, and derailments, are still happening, despite the implementation of advanced railway control systems. One of the reasons for this is the architecture employed in current systems and existing operating processes, which allow human errors to occur. This paper processes a design concept and architecture for the next generation of train control systems (NGTCS). Some key technologies, such as parallel monitoring, system-level “fail-safe”, data sharing and fusion, common-mode cause error avoidance, and the illegal or incorrect operation of alarms by railway workers, are considered. This paper also details the principle and method of parallel monitoring for some key operations such as train tracking interval, interlocking, and train speed limit protection. The NGTCS is a highly intelligent monitoring system that represents system theory, system safety, deeper integration, and data fusion between subsystems and parallel monitoring on critical subjects.

Abstract:Designing of Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS) is one of the key techniques in developing high-speed trains with independent intellectual property rights.A real-time simulation environment based on Simulink is constructed for Train Control and Monitoring System.This real-time simulation environment features in graphical designing,code auto-generation,and the compatibility with semi-physical simulation.With the UDP modules provided by Simulink,a real-time communication is set up among the subsystems.Resolved the problems of data flutter and data compression,this solution of real-time simulation based on Simulink can be applied in the development of actual systems.

Abstract:Rail traffic control systems are undergoing an important transformation. ERMTS/ECTS, CBTC, PTC and other train control systems based on radio communication are being deployed in different countries. These systems meet the high safety requirements for passenger traffic, and cover from congested urban areas to high-speed trains. However, there is a set of facilities, such as ports, dry ports, facilities for the repair and maintenance of trains, logistic centers, mines, etc., whose trains, that only carry freight, circulate in a controlled environment at a low speed. These facilities have low safety requirements. For them, present commercial systems become too expensive, so that, in most cases, railway traffic is still handled manually. This paper presents a system to aid in the exploitation of rail traffic for this type of facilities, called SFPS (Seville Ferro-Port System). SFPS presents many of the features of the most advanced traffic control systems, but incorporates innovations based on Information and Communications Technologies to reduce costs. To this end, train location is based on a satellite global positioning system, physical signs are replaced by virtual ones, displayed in an On-Board Unit, and communication is almost entirely wireless. SFPS has been in a trial phase since March 2016, covering part of the railway facilities of the Port Authority of Seville, with satisfactory results.

Abstract:The 250 km/h Fuxing EMU, the China standard EMU, has requirements for both improved reliability and reduced power consumption. The monitoring system utilized extensively on bogie nowadays is the running gear temperature monitoring system. In May 2021, CHINA RAILWAY released the TJ/CL584 railway industry standard. A new kind of running gear temperature monitoring system that has the advantages of low power consumption, high reliability, and an improved data selection method is built in accordance with this standard. This new system contains temperature sensors and STM32 MCUs for monitoring hosts. The monitoring host has two sets of Ethernet, central processor, temperature measurement, and DC power supply modules. Since it began running over two years ago, the new system has covered 3,162,384 km as of July 15th, 2022.

Abstract:Train Interface Unit (TIU) is the key execution unit of on board Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. ATP system achieves the control of the train and information exchange with the train via TIU. Developing a TIU which fits for different train platform and is in compliance with the safety integrity level (SIL) 4 can greatly facilitate the system installation and lower operation and maintenance cost. This thesis has designed a TIU for a series of standard train platform. Based on the system design, four key technologies of TIU, include relay and Multifunction Vehicle Bus (MVB) interface, safety communication, emergency brake (EB) interface and service brake (SB) interface, are in-depth in anatomist. Through the thorough analysis and evaluation of the safety and real-time performance, we can get the conclusion that the TIU sub-system meets the requirements of the practical use.

Abstract:The controller is the backbone of the new train operation monitoring device.Its network structure includes two layers: the control layer and the communication layer.The integrity of the control functions can be assured by the layered network.The reliability of module-level redundancy and system-level redundancy is analyzed and compared.On this basis,the better module-level redundancy is adopted for the new train operation monitoring device.Also,the scheme for designing the hardware redundancy switching circuit and the intelligent modular input/output module is proposed.Large capacity CF card is used as the carrier for the dump of ground basic data.By applying MD5 code verification technology and data redundancy storage technology,the ground basic data in the on-board host computer and the display has been automatically fully updated at the same time.The train operation monitoring device has improved both the security and usability for updating ground basic data.Ground tests and service running tests show that the device has basically met the current requirements for train operation and thus can guarantee the safe train operation control.

Abstract:Driverless train control systems are becoming popular in the world. Notably, this technology has already been applied for several years. However, these kinds of Automatic Train Operation systems are still under the framework that network elements and movement authority are generated from the ground control center. Hence, the aforementioned rail systems are automated but not autonomous, and the architecture utilization and train tracking interval are limited. With the development of advanced sensors and control algorithms, the train intends to be equipped with a decision-making capability. In order to further improve train movement coordination and efficiency, an Autonomous Train Control System (ATCS) is proposed. This paper provides three main contributions: Firstly, the system structure is described, and the information following in ATCS is discussed with general operation scenarios. Secondly, data isolation is broken under ATCS, and data prediction and edge-based information fusion are applied to process the real dynamic data and estimate the train's speed and position. Thirdly, with the assistant of data fusion, model predictive and data-based control methodologies are discussed.

Abstract:The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is a state-of-the-art train control system designed as a standard for railways across Europe. It generalises traditional discrete interlocking systems to a world in which trains hold on-board equipment for signalling, and trains and interlockings communicate via radio block processors. The ERTMS aims at improving performance and capacity of rail traffic systems without compromising their safety. The ERTMS system is of hybrid nature, in contrast to classical railway signalling systems which deal with discrete data only. Consequently, the switch to ERTMS poses a number of research questions to the formal methods community, most prominently: How can safety be guaranteed? In this paper we present the first formal modelling of ERTMS comprising all subsystems participating in its control cycle. We capture what safety means in physical and in logical terms, and we demonstrate that it is feasible to prove safety of ERTMS systems utilising Real-Time Maude model-checking by considering a number of bi-directional track layouts. ERTMS is currently being installed in many countries. It will be the main train control standard for the foreseeable future. The concepts presented in this paper offer applicable methods supporting the design of dependable ERTMS systems. We demonstrate model-checking to be a viable option in the analysis of large and complex real-time systems. Furthermore, we establish Real-Time Maude as a modelling and verification tool applicable to the railway domain. The approach given in this paper is a rigorous one. In order to avoid modelling errors, we follow a systematic approach: First, as a requirement specification, we identify the event-response structures present in the ERTMS. Then, we model these structures in Real-Time Maude in a traceable way, i.e., specification text in Real-Time Maude can be directly mapped to requirements. We explore our models by checking if they have the desired behaviour, and apply systematic model-exploration through error injection – both these steps are carried out using the formal method Real-Time Maude. Finally, we analyse ERTMS by model-checking, thus applying a formal method to the railway domain, and we mathematically prove that our analysis of ERTMS by model-checking is complete, i.e., that it guarantees safety at all times.

Abstract:This paper describes an innovative integrated solution for monitoring and protection of the power supply system of electric traction. The development of electronics devices, new possibilities to communicate (wireless), and new sensors makes it possible to design, develop and implement new hardware–software structures in various fields such as energy systems, transportation infrastructure, etc. This contributes to increasing developments in the monitoring and protection of railway infrastructure. A monitoring and protection system that uses sensors and devices to acquire electrical parameters from railway infrastructure has been developed and applied for fault detection and protection of power supply systems from electric traction. The solution of monitoring and protection presented are composed of a hardware–software structure with Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) communication for monitoring of power supply installations from the electric traction and a central remote system composed of a device with GSM communication and a server that will allow, among others things, accurate detection of the block section (SC), in which an electrical fault (short circuit) has occurred, determination of the circuit breakers electro-erosion from the railway installations and an indication of the opportune moment for maintenance activity, respectively, as well as knowledge of the technical condition of some equipment from the return circuit. The proposed and developed method for monitoring devices has been validated in the railway laboratory to confirm its capability to detect defects and was tested in the field. Experimental results in the field and appropriate data analysis are included in this article.

Abstract:Future railway systems should bring convenience to people's lives. In fact, the efficiency and the safety of railway services are improving due to the evolution from bespoke stand-alone systems to open-platform, standardized equipment and the increasing use of networked control and automation systems and connected technologies. However, this dependency of automation, control and communication technologies makes railway systems increasingly vulnerable to cyber-physical security threats which affect the overall performance. This paper deals with cyber-physical security concerns facing these systems. As such, vulnerabilities and characteristics of railway threat landscape are analyzed. We then discuss threats facing these assets, their direct impacts and cascading consequences on the whole system.

Abstract:The authors describe the development of the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), provide a description of the TCAS II system operation, offer results of operational evaluations conducted in cooperation with Piedmont, United, and Northwest Airlines, and outline the status and progress of the TCAS implementation. In recent years, the TCAS effort has focused on concepts that make use of the radar transponders carried by aircraft for ground air traffic control purposes. A transponder-based collision avoidance system can provide immediate protection against the vast population of aircraft already equipped with either the current Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS) transponder or the new Mode S transponder. The TCAS concept encompasses a range of capabilities, including TCAS I, which provides traffic advisories (bearing, range, and relative altitude) to assist the pilot in visually acquiring the threat aircraft; TCAS II, which provides traffic and resolution advisories (recommended escape maneuvers) in the vertical plane; and TCAS III, which provides traffic and resolution advisories in both the vertical and horizontal planes.<>

Abstract:This work deals with the design of a control system enabling the autonomous driving of Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) for high-speed trains over ETCS. GoA4 requires trains to autonomously adapt their behaviour to the different driving conditions occurring in real-world trips and involving a wide range of possible maneuvers, even in the presence of unexpected events forcing ETCS interventions. To ensure this high automation level, we propose a hierarchical, modular and scalable control architecture, named Autonomous Driving Function (ADF). It embeds the main ATO functionalities, i.e., optimization of the recommended speed profile and train speed tracking, both nontrivial tasks due to train nonlinear dynamics and complex external environment, while being still compliant with railway standards. Hence, ADF is devoted to the real-time trajectory planning, considering the actual data acquired and the current driving situation along with the related on-line constraints, and to the trajectory tracking which, realized via different classes of controllers, ensures a safe and efficient train motion, also compliant with the railway standard. ADF is designed according to the Model Based Control Design (MBCD) approach which fully covers the V-Cycle development process and supports automatic C code generation compliant to standard EN50128, early design validation, testing, simulation and run-time verification. Finally, thanks to the experimental validation, carried out on an inspection high speed prototype vehicle, ADF has the prospect of becoming an inherent architecture for guaranteeing the GoA4 autonomous diving for HST over ETCS.

Abstract:Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and SCADA systems play a critical role in the management and regulation of critical infrastructure. SCADA systems brings us closer to the real-time application world. All process and equipment control capability is typically provided by a Distributed Control System (DCS) in industries such as power stations, railways, agricultural systems, chemical and water treatment plants. This article proposes to adopt SCADA and PLC technology in the improvement of the performance of real time signaling & train control systems in metro railways infrastructure. The main concern of this work is to minimize the failure in automated metro railways system operator and integrate the information coming from Operational Control Centre (OCC), traction SCADA system, traction power control, and power supply system. This work presents a simulated prototype of an automated metro train system operator that uses PLC and SCADA for real time signaling, monitoring and control of metro railway systems. Here, SCADA is used for the visualization of an automated process operation and then the whole operation is regulated using OMRON (NX1P2-9024DT1) PLC and OMRON's Sysmac studio programming software is used for developing the ladder logic of PLC. The metro railways system has deployed infrastructure based on SCADA from the power supply system, and each station's traction power control is connected to the OCC remotely which commands all the stations and has the highest command priority. An alarm is triggered in the event of an emergency or system congestion. This proposed system overcomes the drawbacks of the current centralized automatic train control (CATC) system. This system provides prominent benefits like augmenting services which may enhance a network's full load capacity and network flexibility, which help in easy modification in the existing program at any time.

Abstract:The railway infrastructure constitutes a type of operational technology (OT)-based critical infrastructure, which is expected to work 24x7, 365 days a year, and where the life expectancy of operational equipment often exceeds 30 years. In this domain, an operational anomaly compromising the OT system can cause a train accident or interrupt traffic, with potentially significant impact in terms of business as well as for passenger safety. Due to their relevance, railways are strategic assets of national interest and, consequently, targets of interest for cybercriminals and cyberwarfare activities. For instance, service interruptions may trigger ripple effects resulting in product shortages and widespread supply chain disruptions, with severe impacts for both the economy and national security. In a bid to optimise and streamline operations. the railway industry has recently started taking a series of significant steps towards digitization, with infrastructures experiencing a significant paradigm shift which, for instance, makes it possible to have centralised interlockings and Radio Block Centre (RBC) for an entire country, with geographical redundancy, ensuring the utmost availability and punctuality by moving the control logic to the cloud. Nevertheless, these developments must always be carried on within the scope of established cybersecurity standards and frameworks. This paper presents an analysis of the state of the art on railway cybersecurity, focused on the existing solutions based on the application of the CENELEC “Technical specification 50701 - Railway Application – Cybersecurity”, which is currently the latest European specification addressing railways, being designed to help suppliers, integrators, and operators to implement a cybersecurity risk assessment plan, the necessary controls, and the management of the complete system life cycle. Special attention will be paid to the conduit between the rail signal interlocking system, that controls the line signalling, and the Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) that runs in the Operational Control Centre (OCC), as this has been identified by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) as one of the most critical systems identified by the operators of essential services.
