Abstract:When phosphogypsum (PG) is used as an aggregate for backfill, phosphate in the PG might influence the hydration process and escape into the environment. The current study aimed to understand phosphate dynamics during the PG-based backfilling process by adding different amounts and types of phosphates (H3PO4, KH2PO4, K3PO4, and Ca3(PO4)2). The results indicate that the majority of the phosphate was first immobilized by PG depending on the types, and the residual dissolved phosphate (RDP) could be further stabilized/solidified (S/S) in the backfill via the hydration process. However, increasing RDP content lowered unconfined compressive strength of the backfill, attributing to the suppression of the hydration process and a loosened backfill structure. Furthermore, the environmental behavior of phosphate was studied by measuring dissolved phosphate in bleeding water and leachate. For bleeding water, a high RDP content might lead to the phosphate concentration exceeding the national standard limit (GB 8978-1996) depending on the phosphate types, and it was recommended that the RDP content should be controlled or converted to Ca3(PO4)2 or K3PO4 before PG inclusion into in the backfill. For leachate, the phosphate concentration was always below the standard limit, indicating that the cemented backfill ensured long-term S/S of the phosphate.

Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) treatment is one of the research hotspots in the field of environmental protection. Many researchers both at home and abroad have devoted themselves to studies on harmless resource treatment of PG, but the treatment technology is unable to meet the demand of PG consumption due to the huge production and storage demands. In order to solve the problem of PG pollution, this study explored the different solidified effects of various modification formulations on the hazardous components in PG, using industrial solid waste calcium carbide slag (CCS) as an alkaline regulator; Portland cement (PC), polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and CaCl2 as the main raw materials of the solidification and stabilization formula and the water content in PG as the reaction medium. The results showed that CCS (0.5%), PC (0.4%) and PAC (0.3%) had a more significant solidified effect on phosphorus (P) and fluoride (F). PAC was added in two steps and reacted under normal temperature and pressure, and its leaching toxicity meets the requirements of relevant standards, which laid an excellent foundation for PG-based ecological restoration materials and filling materials, with low economic cost, simple process and strong feasibility. This will provide great convenience for the later mining and metallurgy.

Abstract:The gradual accumulation of phosphogypsum (PG) has attracted worldwide attention because of its occupation of considerable surface land and serious environmental consequences. This work demonstrates the feasibility of PG-based cemented paste backfill (CPB) by considering its physical properties and environmental effects, thus providing an approach for significant disposal of PG in an economical way. Firstly, the mechanical properties of the PG-based CPB specimens were tested. The specimens were prepared with original PG, and the maximum compressive strength reached around 1.5 MPa with the phosphogypsum/cementitious agents ratio of 4:1 and the slurry concentration of 66% at 120 d of curing age. Then, the pollution potential of the PG before and after its inclusion into cementitious agents was investigated. The results showed that when PG was included into backfill samples, the release of P, F and metals dramatically decreased. Additionally, the results of five rounds of leaching tests with backfill samples having different curing ages suggested that the risk of diffusion of pollutants was much less than that from the leachates of PG. Synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) results suggested that the metal contents in leachates were within the limits defined in the Chinese standard (DZ/T 0290-2015). Therefore, the PG-based CPB technology could provide an economical alternative for the consumption and reutilization of a significant amount of PG while alleviating its pollution potential.

Abstract:The CaSO4·2H2O content in phosphogypsum (PG) exceeds 90%, which renders it suitable to be used as a component of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement. In this study, PG was utilized as a component of CSA cement. The immobilization of soluble phosphorus (s-P2O5) and heavy metals in PG, the radioactivity and the performances of CSA cement were studied. Besides, a method to eliminate the adverse effect of s-P2O5 on CSA cement performances was proposed. Results demonstrate that the s-P2O5 and heavy metals can be effectively immobilized and the radionuclides content is within the acceptable level. The PO4 3− combines the Al3+ in the hydration system and forms insoluble AlPO4. It consumes Al3+ and lowers down the Al3+ concentration of the hydration system, which thereby lowers down the driving force for the precipitation of ettringite. Besides, due to the formation of AlPO4, the dissolution and hydration of C4A3 S ¯ is inhibited. The s-P2O5 obviously prolongs the setting time, lowers down the early compressive strength and leads to a relatively higher expansion rate. By the pretreatment with Ca(OH)2 and Al2(SO4)3, the acidity of PG can be neutralized and the s-P2O5 can be effectively immobilized, which thereby eliminates the adverse effect of s-P2O5 on C4A3 S ¯ hydration and the performances of CSA cement. Therefore, PG can substitute dihydrate gypsum (DG) to be used as a component of CSA cement.

Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) occupies a large amount of land due to its large annual production and low utilization rate, and at the same time causes serious environmental problems due to toxic impurities. PG is used for mine backfill, and industrial solid waste is a curing agent for PG, which can save the filling cost and reduce environmental pollution. In this paper, PG was used as a raw material, combined with steel slag (SS) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) under the action of an alkali-activated agent (NaOH) to prepare all-solid waste phosphogypsum-based backfill material (PBM). The effect of the GGBS to SS ratio on the compressive strength and toxic leaching of PBM was investigated. The chemical composition of the raw materials was obtained by XRF analysis, and the mineral composition and morphology of PBM and its stabilization/curing mechanism against heavy metals were analyzed using XRD and SEM-EDS. The results showed that the best performance of PBM was achieved when the contents of PG, GGBS, and SS were 80%, 13%, and 7%, the liquid-to-solid ratio was 0.4, and the mass concentration of NaOH was 4%, with a strength of 2.8 MPa at 28 days. The leaching concentration of fluorine at 7 days met the standard of groundwater class IV (2 mg/L), and the leaching concentration of phosphorus was detected to be less than 0.001 mg/L, and the leaching concentration of heavy metals met the environmental standard at 14 d. The hydration concentration in PBM met the environmental standard. The hydration products in PBM are mainly ettringite and C-(A)-S-H gel, which can effectively stabilize the heavy metals in PG through chemical precipitation, physical adsorption, and encapsulation.

Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) is a solid waste discharged from the industrial wet production of phosphoric acid. In order to improve the utilization rate of PG and understand the performance of PG mixed with calcium aluminate cement (CAC), it is necessary to determine the effect of different dosages of PG on the performance of CAC. therefore, this study investigated the hydration properties and compressive strength of PG and CAC mixtures. PG was added into CAC in an equal proportion, and the hydrated products were studied by XRD, TG-DTG, SEM and MIP methods. The research demonstrate that with the increase of PG content, the setting time and flowability of CAC pastes gradually decreased, and the compressive strength increased gradually. However, when the content of PG is greater than 15%, the growth rate of compressive strength of CAC becomes slower. The presence of PG resulted in the complete disappearance of the hydration products CAH 10 and C 2 AH 8 of CAC. With the increase of PG content, the pore size distribution of CAC paste was changed, and its main hydration products were transformed into ettringite, AFm and AH 3 , which became the main source of affecting the compressive strength of CAC.

Abstract:Abstract Phosphogypsum (PG) is an acidic by-product that is created during the production of phosphoric acid using the sulfuric acid route. The management of PG poses a significant environmental challenge worldwide due to its large quantity and chemical composition. While PG primarily consists of calcium sulfate dihydrate, it also contains various impurities such as phosphorus, fluoride, heavy metals, and radionuclides. These toxic impurities, when present in high concentrations, can have adverse effects on the environment and human health. In this review, we provide a detailed examination of the behavior of the most abundant impurities found in PG. Furthermore, we discuss the factors that influence the presence of different types of impurities in PG. Understanding the overall behavior of these impurities is crucial for selecting appropriate environmental methods for PG management and identifying suitable avenues for its valorization. Abstract:Because the disposal of phosphogypsum (PG) can lead to serious contamination of the air, soil, and water, recycling of PG has attracted wide attention. This study investigated the effect and solidification of phosphorus in the production of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement using PG as the sole CaO source. The effects of three phosphorus impurities (Ca3(PO4)2, CaHPO4, Ca(H2PO4)2) on the decomposition of CaSO4, formation of minerals, microstructure of the clinker, and the hydration and mechanical properties of the cement were studied. Experimental results show that Ca3(PO4)2 and Ca(H2PO4)2 promoted the decomposition of CaSO4 and the formation of clinker minerals with the increase in P2O5 content, whereas CaHPO4 showed a promoting effect only when the P2O5 content was more than 1.5 wt%. The increase in phosphorus incorporation in Ca2SiO4 leads to the transformation of β-Ca2SiO4 to α'-Ca2SiO4 and then to Ca7Si2P2O16. The presence of three phosphates in the clinker enhanced the growth of crystal grains and the generation of a liquid phase. Compared with Ca4Al6SO16 without phosphorus, the hydration reaction of phosphorus-bearing Ca4Al6SO16 started later and ended earlier, and the reaction time was shorter. The presence of phosphorus impurities reduces the 1-day strength of CSA cement but does not affect the development of the 3-day and 28-day strengths. Considering environmental aspects, the solidification of phosphorus in the production of CSA clinker were quantified by measuring the distribution of elements. The results indicated that phosphorus is solidified by Ca4Al6SO16, Ca2SiO4, and Ca4Al2Fe2O10, and Ca2SiO4 has a stronger ability to solidify phosphorus than the other two minerals. Ca3(PO4)2 is more difficult to solidify than CaHPO4 and Ca(H2PO4)2. This study is of great significant to guide the large-scale clean utilization of PG in the production of CSA cement.

Abstract:In the present study, phosphogypsum slag-based cementitious material (PS) was designed, and the potential use for solidifying/stabilizing lead-contaminated soils was investigated. The physicochemical properties, performance, and mechanisms of its stabilization of lead in soil were studied by the methods of toxic leaching test, compressive strength, XRD, TGA, FTIR and XPS. The compressive strength of the PS solidified body was from 0.52 to 6.66 MPa when he concentration of lead ions in contaminated soil was set as 6000 mg/kg (0.6 %), 10,000 mg/kg (1.0 %) and 15,000 mg/kg (1.5 %) and the dosage of curing agent is 10 %, 20 % and 30 %., which is acceptable for backfill treatments or roadbed materials. Under the conditions, Pb leaching concentrations ranged from 40.98 to 355.21 μg·L-1, which was within the safety limit specified in Chinese standard (GB5085.3–2007). There is the potential for safe disposal and reuse of PS stabilized soil. TGA and XRD showed that the main components of PS-solidified soil were ettringite (AFt), calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), and lead phosphate. FTIR, XPS, and SEM-EDS analysis demonstrated the lead was successfully incorporated into AFt and C-S-H. Pb forms bonds with lead oxide and aluminum oxide tetrahedra and replaces part of the adsorbed Ca ions in AFt and C-S-H. In addition, the resulting phosphate precipitates were also encapsulated in the C-S-H phase, together with the stabilization of lead in the soil.

Optimizing calcium materials for minimizing arsenate phytoavailability in upland arable soil based on geochemical analysis

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the reducing effects of calcite and phosphogypsum on arsenate [As(V)] availability to plants and elucidate the mechanisms of As(V) immobilization. The concentration of available As(V) to plants in upland arable soils with 1% calcite and phosphogypsum decreased to 17.4% and 36.9%, respectively, compared to the control. As(V) phytoavailability depends on the soil pH and calcium materials. The process of stabilizing As(V) (F3; anion exchange) with phosphogypsum is faster and easier compared to that with calcite (F4; bind to carbonate), but it results in a less stable form. New Ca-As(V) minerals (Ca52(HAsO4)x(AsO4)∙yH2O, Ca5H2x(AsO4)∙yH2O, or Ca32(AsO4)∙10 H2O) were identified in X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns with calcite treatment. Precipitation, the primary mechanism induced by calcite, was activated at a soil pH above 8.0. Based on the deconvolution of calcium and sulfur X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra and the peak shift in the XRD pattern in phosphogypsum, the substitution in which SO42- is exchanged with HAsO42- is the primary mechanism for As(V) immobilization. Substitution induced by phosphogypsum is a suitable reaction in upland arable soils, the predominant form of As(V) in the soil, with a pH range of 5-7.
Highly targeted solidification behavior of hazardous components in phosphogypsum

Abstract:In this study, an effective approach has developed to solidify phosphorus, fluorine and heavy metals in phosphogypsum by using carbide slag(CS) and polymer, and the effect of carbide slag and polymer addition on the pH and the speciations of phosphorus, fluorine in phosphogypsum has discussed in detail. The experimental results showed that in the carbide slag modified phosphogypsum system, soluble phosphorus and fluoride were significant fixed and converted into Ca3(PO4)2, CaF2 and other stable precipitates. The pH-related leaching test results indicated that there was little significant relationship between the total phosphorus leaching concentration and pH under neutral and alkaline conditions. Fluorapatite is the control phase of phosphorus in the phosphogypsum system, and the fluorite and fluorapatite are the main control phases of fluorine leaching. After long-term leaching, the proportion of the control phase of fluorite was reduced. In the polymer modified phosphogypsum system, large amount of soluble phosphorus and fluorine were solidified, which achieve high effective solidification of phosphorus and fluorine. The pH-related leaching test showed that the polymer has a significant effect on phosphorus and fluorine under different pH conditions. Besides, the curing effect has a significant relationship with pH. At the same time, carbide slag and polymer have a certain effect on the conversion between the speciations of heavy metals in the system. The experimental results showed that the pH, phosphorus, fluorine and heavy metals in the carbide slag-phosphogypsum (CS-PG) system meet the requirements of the "Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard (GB 8978–1996)" of China.

Iron-calcium reinforced solidification of arsenic alkali residue in geopolymer composite: Wide pH stabilization and its mechanism

Abstract:Arsenic-alkali residue (AAR) from antimony production can pose significant health and environmental hazards due to the risk of arsenic (As) leaching. In this study, geopolymer composite synthesized from fly ash (FA) was investigated for efficient stabilization of high-arsenic-containing AAR (As2O3 of 22.74 wt%). Two industrial wastes, e.g., granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) with active calcium composition and water-quenched slag (WQS) from lead-zinc smelting with active iron composition, were investigated for the reinforcement of AAR geopolymer solidification. A wide pH stabilization (from pH = 3-pH = 12) of AAR with the geopolymer composite was successfully achieved, and As leaching concentration of geopolymer with the addition of 5 wt% AAR was significantly reduced from 2343.73 mg/L (AAR) to that below 0.18 mg/L, which successfully meet the regulatory limit of Chinese domestic waste landfill (GB, 18598-2019, 1.2 mg/L) and hazardous waste landfill (GB16889-2008, 0.3 mg/L). Johnbaumite (Ca5(AsO4)3(OH)) was formed in geopolymer composite and leached samples with initial pH from 2.6 to 6 (final pH from 5.54 to 13.15). Magnetite and iron hydroxide phases with strong adsorption and/or As co-precipitation capability were also observed. As stabilization was also achieved with iron oxidation from As(III) to As(V). This study solves the problem of unstable As leaching at different pH for the solidification of arsenic-bearing solid waste, and provides a promising and practical strategy for efficient solidification/stabilization of AAR as well as other similar arsenic-bearing solid wastes with geopolymer composite.
Hydration process and fluoride solidification mechanism of multi-source solid waste-based phosphogypsum cemented paste backfill under CaO modification

Abstract:The large-scale, environmentally friendly utilization of phosphogypsum (PG) remains a global challenge. PG cemented paste backfill (PCPB) is a promising method to manage PG, but using ordinary Portland cement as the binder has drawbacks such as high cost, low mechanical strength, and high fluoride leaching risk. This paper presents a multi-source solid waste-based PCPB (MPCPB) material that enhances mechanical properties and reduces fluoride leaching risks. In MPCPB, industrial waste residues like steel slag (SS) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) are used as precursors (SS: GBFS = 1:2). Additionally, 4–8 wt% CaO (relative to the dry weight of PG) is used as a neutralizing modifier and alkaline activator. The results indicate that an optimal amount of CaO can neutralize the residual acidity of PG, provide sufficient Ca(OH) 2 for MPCPB hydration, and react with PG to produce significant amounts of AFt. Furthermore, CaO promotes the geopolymerization reaction between SS and GBFS, generating more calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and calcium aluminate silicate hydrate (C-A-S-H) gels. Fluoride stabilization in MPCPB results from synergistic effects involving hydration reactions, complexation, ionic mobility, rearrangement, and physical adsorption. Notably, CaO enhances the conversion of free fluoride ions into stable compounds like fluorapatite, fluorite (CaF 2 ), [AlF 6 ] 3- , and [FeF 6 ] 3- complexes. This approach offers a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient solution to the PG stockpiling challenge.

Abstract:This study involves the use of solid waste (GGBS and phosphogypsum) in combination with lime to prepare a phosphogypsum-slag based cementitious matrix (PS) for solidifying/stabilizing Pb (II). Effective Pb-stabilization was achieved regardless of using different contents of raw materials, the compositions of 60% GGBS, 35% phosphogypsum and 5% CaO had excellent compressive strength and low metal leaching concentration, and the mechanism of solidification/stabilization on heavy metals had been investigated. XRD patterns revealed that the hydration products of PS were ettringite (AFt), calcium silicate hydrate(C-S-H) and gypsum. Hydration heat test and TGA analysis showed that the hydration process of PS matrix was retarded after the addition of Pb, and the production (AFt and C-S-H) was reduced. FTIR, NMR and SEM-EDS analysis showed that there was no substitution of Pb to Si and Al, and PS solidified/stabilized Pb was mainly achieved by physical means. Such as the physical encapsulation and adsorption of Pb by ettringite and calcium silicate hydrate, the substitution of Pb to Ca ion, and the binding of Pb by covalent bond. PS matrix can stabilize Pb through the above ways. Lead phosphate precipitation may contribute to the reduction of metal leaching concentration.

Control of Fluoride Pollution in Cemented Phosphogypsum Backfill by Citric Acid Pretreatment

Abstract:Using phosphogypsum (PG) as the aggregate of cemented backfill is an economical and effective method of PG utilization. However, the stability and performance of cemented backfill are challenged by the rich fluoride content in PG. In this study, the effects of citric acid pretreatment on PG defluorination, backfill performance and environmental behavior were investigated by washing PG with different concentrations of citric acid and washing times. The results showed that the citric acid pretreatment could significantly reduce the fluoride content in PG and promote the hydration reaction with the binder, thus greatly reducing the usage and cost of the binder in actual production. Considering the efficiency of defluorination, the optimal citric acid concentration and washing times were determined to be 4% and 7–8 times, respectively. In addition, after citric acid pretreatment, the viscosity and setting time of the backfill slurry and the porosity of the backfill reduced, and the strength of the backfill improved, which was conducive to slurry pipeline transportation and underground mine stability. Finally, a further analysis of environmental behavior was conducted and it was found that the citric acid washing greatly reduced the content of fluoride in the bleeding water of slurry and the backfill leachate, which met the integrated wastewater discharge standard in China. Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) is a by-product of phosphorus chemical industry, which contains a large amount of soluble phosphorus and fluorine impurities to pose a great ecological risk to the environment and human health. In this study, we proposed one-step mechanical ball milling as a cleaner operation for simultaneous immobilization of phosphorus and fluorine in PG waste with different calcareous and aluminiferous immobilization reagents. The results show that, the remaining soluble PO 4 3− and F − concentrations could reduce to 0.056 and 0.99 mg/L in PG-Ca(OH) 2 –Al(OH) 3 system, respectively, when the total mass ratio at 5% of Ca(OH) 2 and Al(OH) 3 was added to PG. Furthermore, mineralogical and chemical evidence indicated that, the main immobilization mechanisms of soluble phosphorus and fluorine in PG are as follows: a) the transformation of co-crystal phosphorus (Ca((SO 4 ) x ,(HPO) 4 ) 1-x ), CSHP) into insoluble phosphorus during milling process, b) the exchange of F − by OH − in Katoite formed by Ca(OH) 2 and Al(OH) 3 , c) the formation of calcium aluminum fluorosilicate and hydroxyapatite due to the increased activity of silicate. Additionally, when using kaolinite and calcium carbonate slag as calcareous and aluminiferous alternative reagents, the concentrations of PO 4 3− and F − were 0.056 and 7.42 mg/L in leaching solution, within the permitted level for the GB8978-1996 (0.5 mg/L for PO 4 3− , 10.0 mg/L for F − ). The application of calcium base, aluminum base solid wastes could provide a potential solution for large-capacity disposal of industrial waste and sustainable utilization of PG.

Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) is a solid waste generated during the wet production of phosphoric acid, noted for causing significant environmental pollution due to low pH and contamination with phosphorus-fluorine impurities. This work proposes an innovative method of acid treatment to acidify PG by directly adding of sulfuric acid at suitable temperatures. Initially, this acid treatment process is employed to convert and remove phosphorus-fluorine impurities, followed by PG after acid treatment incorporation with lime for safe solidification. The conversion mechanisms of phosphorus-fluorine impurities during acidification and solidification are elucidated. Results demonstrate that the direct acidification method converts most fluoride into H 2 SiF 6 and HF, which are subsequently released from the PG system after a temperature of 175 °C treatment. Phosphorus is wholly transformed into water-soluble forms (H 3 PO 4 /H 2 PO 4 - /HPO 4 2- ), especially as eutectic phosphorus is released and converted when CaSO 4 ·2 H 2 O crystals dissolve to II-CaSO 4 . Following acidification to achieve a high water-soluble phosphorus/fluorine ratio, lime is added to convert phosphorus-fluorine impurities into Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 F, ensuring harmlessness. The addition of 3.7 % lime to acidified PG, an acid amount of 2-times the theoretical requirement, yields a treatment solution with pH=8.65, ρ(P)=0.05 mg/L and ρ(F - )=1.11 mg/L, meeting Class V water discharge standards (GB 3838–2002). The solidified PG filter residue contains the water–soluble ω(P 2 O 5 ) ≤ 0.01 % and ω(F - ) ≤ 0.0061 %, suitable for safe storage. This work indicates that this process can separate phosphorus impurities with lower energy consumption, providing a harmless PG treatment. Furthermore, the treated PG can hydrate to gain strength, potentially enhancing its utility as a resource.

Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG), a waste product of the phosphate fertilizer industry, is a source of environmental pollution. PG can be calcined to form the hemihydrate gypsum (β-CaSO 4 •0.5H 2 O, HPG), making it a potential substitute to natural gypsum. However, PG contains large amounts of soluble phosphorus(P) impurities, which pose a serious risk on the soil and groundwater, especially when they are abundantly accumulated and leached. This study systematically investigated that the pretreatment of PG by calcium hydroxide (CH) solution. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to study the precipitation of soluble P impurities in PG, differential thermal analysis (DTA) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) were used to study the effect of CH solution on the physicochemical property of PG. In addition, the hardening characters and hydration process of HPG after stabilization with CH solution were studied in detail. The results show that pretreatment with CH solution can stabilize the soluble P impurities. However, the addition of CH solution can slightly reduce the mechanical properties of HPG and prolong the setting time. This was attributed to the production of excess CaHPO 4 ·2H 2 O, which encapsulates the HPG. It is concluded that pretreatment of PG with 0.05% CH solution reduce environmental pollution without affecting the properties of the HPG produced.

Abstract:Phosphogypsum (PG) is a typical by-product of phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizers during acid digestion. The application of cemented paste backfill (CPB) has been feasibly investigated for the remediation of PG. The present study evaluated fluorine immobilization mechanisms and attempted to construct a related thermodynamic and geochemical modeling to describe the related stabilization performance. Physico-chemical and mineralogical analyses were performed on PG and hardened PG-based CPB (PCPB). The correlated macro- and micro-structural properties were obtained from the analysis of the combination of unconfined compressive strength and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy imaging. Acid/base-dependent leaching tests were performed to ascertain fluoride reachability. In addition, Gibbs Energy Minimization Software and PHREEQC were applied as tools to characterize the PCPB hydration and deduce its geochemical characteristics. The results proved that multiple factors are involved in fluorine stabilization, among which the calcium silicate hydrate gel was found to be associated with retention. Although the quantitative comparison with the experimental data shows that further modification should be introduced into the simulation before being used as a predictive implement to determine PG management options, the importance of acid/base concentration in regulating the leaching behavior was confirmed. Moreover, the modeling enabled the identification of the impurity phases controlling the stability and leachability.
