Abstract:Degassing treatment is critical to remove cross-linking by-products in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable factory joints and prevent early insulation deterioration. In this article, 500-kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cable factory joint samples were prepared, and the physicochemical and temperature-dependent electrical properties of the samples under different degassing times were investigated. The results show that prolonged degassing treatment increases the crystallinity and reduces the tensile properties of the XLPE samples. The samples without degassing have visible micropores near the interface, and these micropores can be eliminated after a longer degassing time. In addition, degassing treatment can reduce the current density, increase the threshold field strength, and enhance the breakdown strength of the samples. A significant negative charge accumulation appears at the interface of the sample without degassing, which dramatically distorts the electric field. Long-term degassing treatment can improve this phenomenon, and the accumulated charge at the interface at elevated temperatures is significantly reduced. Furthermore, a model of the molecular chain microstructure at the interface before and after degassing is proposed. The molecular chain’s energy band structure and electron cloud distribution at the interface are analyzed based on quantum chemical calculation. It is found that cable makers can improve the insulation properties of cable factory joints by appropriately extending the degassing time to avoid interface deterioration.
Enhancement of Insulation Properties of Cross-Linked Polyethylene Utilizing Aromatic Voltage Stabilizers with Electron-Withdrawing and Electron-Donating Groups

Abstract:This paper presents the influence of three different voltage stabilizers, 4-n-propylbenzoic acid, 2-methoxyphenylboronic acid, and 3-aminobenzoylmethylamide, on the insulation properties of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). The 1 wt % voltage stabilizers are blended with XLPE by a solution method, and then the samples are prepared via a hot pressing method. Electrical and physicochemical properties of the XLPE blends are analyzed by space charge, DC resistivity, DC breakdown strength, thermally stimulated depolarization current, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. It is found that the addition of the voltage stabilizers enhances the DC resistivity and DC breakdown strength of the XLPE, which also inhibits the accumulation of space charges in the XLPE. The results show that the XLPE blend with the addition of 4-n-propylbenzoic acid has the lowest conduction current and a 23.3% increment in the DC breakdown strength compared to that of the reference XLPE among the used voltage stabilizers. Moreover, it is found that the melting properties and thermal stability of the XLPE are not affected by the addition of the voltage stabilizers. The XLPE blend with 4-n-propylbenzoic acid exhibits a uniform trap depth distribution, which facilitates the migration of the space charge to the anode and reduces the electric field inside the sample bulk. Quantum chemical calculations demonstrate that the matching ability of the electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups of the three voltage stabilizers effectively enhances the electrical properties of the XLPE. In contrast, the 4-n-propylbenzoic acid has the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level, which can effectively buffer the high-energy electrons and increase the DC breakdown strength. A charge carrier transport mechanism is also proposed to explain the effect of the voltage stabilizer on the space charge movement in the tested samples.
Delocalized Aromatic Molecules with Matched Electron‐donating and Electron‐withdrawing Groups Enhancing Insulating Performance of Polyethylene Blends

Abstract:Seven delocalized aromatic molecules with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups are applied as voltage stabilizers to improve the insulation properties of polyethylene blends. Voltage stabilizers 1 wt% are added into the blends (90 wt% low-density polyethylene and 10 wt% high density polyethylene) by diffusion loading method. Electrical measurements including electrical treeing, space charge distribution, and direct current conductivity are conducted to disclose their effects. The results show that the co-existence of matched electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups in the molecules is favorable for the insulation properties. A 50% increase of tree initiation voltage is achieved with the addition of 3-aminobenzoic acid, which is also able to inhibit the space charge and decrease the conductivity at lower temperature. Besides, the grafting sample of the optimal molecule is successfully prepared and displayed enhanced electrical properties. Finally, the common internal mechanism of the delocalized molecules on different electrical properties is revealed.

Abstract:An optimal degassing treatment duration for the preparation of commercial 500 kV extra high voltage direct current (EHVDC) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation can improve its overall properties, reduce the manufacturing cost and time, which is urgently needed for high voltage cables suppliers. This paper analyzes the effect of different degassing duration on the content of cross-linking by-products, morphological structure and insulation properties of 500 kV EHVDC XLPE insulation. The raw pellets of commercial 500 kV EHVDC XLPE cable material are used to prepare the test samples by the hot-pressing method. Five samples with the different degassing durations of 0 h, 12 h, 36 h, 90 h, and 200 h were at 70 degrees C. Physico-chemical and electrical methods are used to characterize the overall properties of the material under the different degassing durations. The results show that the measured content of the crosslinking by-products is consistent with the theoretical values calculated by Fick's second law. The oxidation induction time of the samples is reduced and tensile properties are improved with the increase of the degassing time. Furthermore, degassing treatment increased the lamellae thickness in the early stages and reduced the difference in the internal aggregation structure of the material. It was found that the degassing treatment significantly suppressed the space charge accumulation inside the material. Moreover, the degassing treatment of 36 h can increase the dielectric breakdown strength and reduce the current density of the samples. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Effect of Delocalized Structure on Voltage Stabilizer to Improve Electrical Performance of Cross-linked Polyethylene

Abstract:This study proposes the inclusion of a novel voltage stabilizer to crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) for improving the insulation performance of XLPE cables at higher voltage levels. The m-aminobenzoic acid and leucine were selected as voltage stabilizers to blend with XLPE base material, respectively. Thin film samples of about $\sim200\mu$m were prepared through a hot press method. Various electrical tests such as DC breakdown, DC conductivity, space charge distributions and surface potential decay were performed under $30^{\circ}\mathrm{C}, 50^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ and $70\circ \mathrm{c}$. The trap distribution and the quantum chemical properties were calculated to study the mechanism. The results demonstrate that the addition of m-aminobenzoic acid can effectively improve the breakdown strength of XLPE, reduce the DC conductivity and space charge accumulation. However, the addition of leucine has no significant effect. The charge trap analysis indicates that the lower energy level traps are more advantageous to enhance the electrical properties of the material, while the quantum chemical calculation demonstrates that the delocalized structure dissipates the energy of the carriers. Thus, the delocalized structure of voltage stabilizer can effectively protect the XLPE molecular chain from the influence of high-energy charge carriers and hence improves the electrical insulation performance of XLPE.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of long-length and large-capacity power transmission around the world, the $\pm 525$ kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) cable system has been widely recognized as the potential technology for power transmission. To further enhance the HVDC cable transmission capacity at a more economical level, the high conductor operation temperature is indispensable. However, higher temperature is more dangerous for XLPE cable insulation especially under HVDC stress. Therefore, it is recommended by Cigre TB 852 [1] that the high temperature performance of insulation material should be examined. Various dielectric insulation tests at different temperatures are performed on sliced XLPE samples from real HVDC cable. The testing results are carefully analyzed and can provide guidance for the efficient design of insulation system for high temperature $\pm 525\text{kV}$ HVDC cable system applications.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the microstructure and electrical insulation characteristics at the interface of 500 kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable factory joints for extra high voltage direct current (EHVDC) application. The interface between two layers was polished by different grit sandpapers (80, 400, 1000, 2000, and 0000 (unpolished)). The samples (#1000) polished by 1000 grit mesh at the interface were degassed at 70 degrees C for 0, 12, 36, 90, and 200 h, respectively. Physico-chemical and electrical experiments were performed on the prepared test samples. It is found that increasing the number of sandpaper grit meshes reduces the average lamellae thickness at the interface and increases the crystallinity. Moreover, microporous defects are observed at the interface. The parameters viz elongation at break, current density, and the number of microporous defects increase initially and then decrease. However, the space charge accumulation, threshold electric field strength, and DC breakdown decrease initially and then increase. Notably, the #1000 roughness is a turning point. On the other side, degassing treatment promotes the orderly folding and recrystallization of the molecular chains arranged the amorphous region and significantly reduces the microporous defects at the interface. The mechanical properties are affected to a certain extent. The improved microstructure reduces the space charge accumulation and the current density of the sample, and increases the DC breakdown strength. An interfacial microscopic model and a charge transport model are proposed to analyze the mechanism of material properties under different roughnesses and electric fields. The results indicate that the ultra-smooth interface and degassing treatment strengthen the molecular chain linking at the interface. Moreover, they significantly reduce the microporous defects at the interface and improve the insulation properties of the factory joint. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Graphene as a novel additive in low density polyethylene (LDPE), high density polyethylene–low density polyethylene blend (10%HDPE–LDPE) and polypropylene–low density polyethylene blend (10%PP–LDPE), is investigated for promising eco-friendly insulating materials in high voltage cables. The composites with graphene amounts of 0, 0.002 wt%, 0.02 wt%, and 0.2 wt% are prepared by the solution mixing method. With attempt to disclose the structure–property relationships, the composites are extensively characterized by physical techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, and electrical measurements including electrical treeing, direct current conductivity and space charge distributions. Results show that graphene can significantly enhances the thermal stability of LDPE and 10%PP–LDPE, slightly decrease the degree of crystallinity, change the size of the crystal diameters, and improve the phase distribution of the polymer blends. Consequently, graphene can prolong the electrical tree initiation time and block the extension of electrical tree. Besides, it can modulate the trap distributions, which will further change the conductivity and ability to suppress space charge accumulations. This excellent performance of graphene could be attributed to its good exfoliation, uniform dispersion and outstretched morphology in the polymer matrix, as well as its strong ability to capture electrons. Influence of Thermal Aging on Insulation Properties of Voltage Stabilizer Blended Cross-Linked Polyethylene

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of thermal aging on the insulation properties of voltage stabilizer blended cross-linked polyethylene was studied. The test samples of XLPE and XLPE/voltage stabilizer consisting of 1 wt% m-aminobenzoic acid were prepared. The electrical properties of the samples were characterized by DC breakdown test, DC conductivity test and space charge test at 30 °C, 50 °C and 70 °C, respectively. The results show that the addition of the voltage stabilizer can effectively decrease the DC conductivity, suppress the space charge accumulation, and improve the breakdown strength of the XLPE. However, the blends after thermal aging show a high DC conductivity, severe space charge accumulation and low breakdown strength, similar to the pure XLPE. The simulation results based on the GROMACS show that thermal aging accelerates the migration of the voltage stabilizer and then leads to phase separation, which eventually decreases the insulation properties of the XLPE.

Abstract:Polymeric nanocomposite insulations are receiving the widespread attention of the electrical cable industry. This paper presents the electrical insulation performance of as-received commercial 320 kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE)/MgO nanocomposite material with reference to the pure XLPE. The results of this commercial-grade electrical insulation material are not reported hitherto. The scanning electron microscopy confirms the well-dispersed nanofiller inside the polymer matrix. The DC electrical insulation performance is investigated by DC breakdown strength, space charge, DC electrical conductivity, and surface potential decay measurements. The test samples are subjected to the thermal aging at 135 degrees C for 30 days. The un-aged nanocomposite exhibits 20% higher DC breakdown strength, negligible hetero space charge accumulation, and the lower DC conductivity by one order than the un-aged pure XLPE. Moreover, thermally aged nanocomposite shows more restraint to the deterioration of its properties. After the thermal aging, the DC breakdown strength decreased by 38% and 20% in the pure XLPE and its nanocomposite, respectively. Thermally aged nanocomposite shows negligible hetero charges and an increase in the DC conductivity by one order. However, the pure XLPE shows higher hetero charge accumulation and the increased DC conductivity by one order. In un-aged XLPE nanocomposite higher crystallinity, higher deep trap density, and the lower carbonyl index are found to be the primary attributes of its improved performance. It is postulated that these significantly unchanged attributes can be the reason for the better anti-thermal aging properties of the XLPE nanocomposite.
Enhancement of Service Life and Electrical Insulation Properties of Polymeric Cables with the Optimum Content of Aromatic Voltage Stabilizer

Abstract:This article presents the possibility of extending the service life of XLPE insulation based on high voltage cables by blending the optimum concentration of the aromatic voltage stabilizer. The insulation performance of XLPE is analyzed by adding the 0.5, 1, and 3 wt% of 3‐aminobenzoic acid voltage stabilizer. The investigated insulation properties include the DC step‐by‐step breakdown to estimate the life exponent, space charge, DC conductivity, surface potential decay, dielectric loss, and dielectric constant measurements. The results illustrate that the 1 wt% voltage stabilizer addition increases the life exponent from 10 up to 15, which is highly suitable for the high voltage cables. Moreover, it exhibits the negligible space charge accumulation and the least electrical field distortion inside the insulation bulk. It also exhibits the lower DC conductivity by one order of magnitude comparing to the pure XLPE. The highest bandgap value of 1 wt% addition further supports its better insulating properties. Furthermore, the dielectric measurements show that the XLPE with 1 wt% voltage stabilizer exhibits the least dielectric constant and dielectric loss. The differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis results show that the thermal properties are significantly improved after the voltage stabilizer addition. POLYM. ENG. Polyethylene Blends With/without Graphene for Potential Recyclable HVDC Cable Insulation

Abstract:This paper presents investigations on a usage of graphene as a voltage stabilizer for polyethylene blends in the potential recyclable high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable insulation. Thermal and electrical properties of the blends with/without graphene were evaluated by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrical treeing tests, DC conductivity and space charge measurements. Trap energy distributions in the blends were estimated using the measured space charge decay data. The obtained results show that additive-like amounts of graphene can improve the thermal stability of the polyethylene blends. The influence of the graphene on the tree inception voltage (TIV) of the polyethylene blends is not significant, whereas the low density polyethylene/high density polyethylene (LDPE/HDPE) with/without graphene demonstrates the highest TIV comparing to the LDPE, LDPE/polypropylene, and their corresponding graphene added materials. It is found that the DC conductivity of the polyethylene blends with/without graphene increases consistently with the increase of the temperature. The conductivity of the LDPE/HDPE decreases apparently with the inclusion of graphene. It has been shown that space charge accumulations can be suppressed by the addition of graphene in the polyethylene blends. It is postulated that the high trap level and trap energy density of the polyethylene blends with graphene are closely connected to the suppression of the space charge accumulation in the blends.

Abstract:Polypropylene is considered to be the material of choice for environmentally friendly high voltage direct current cable insulation. The high power transmission of electrical energy exposes insulating materials to high temperatures and electric fields, resulting in the degradation of material properties. This paper reports that organic molecular semiconductors with strong electron affinity can effectively modulate electrical properties of polypropylene. The charge injection and transport process are analyzed by considering a combination of relations describing various conduction models in dielectrics, including the Richardson–Schottky (RS) emission and the hopping conduction. Based on the performed experiments, a modified Wiesmann–Zeller (WZ) model is proposed to simulate the electrical treeing process of polypropylene. The electrical treeing results are well verified with the simulation results, which offer a valuable tool for further analysis of the effect of intrinsic barrier height, hopping distance, and activation energy on the electrical degradation in the material. This work provides an insightful analysis of multiple charge transport mechanisms affecting the electrical degradation of the polymer, which is crucially essential for the rational design of high-performance insulation materials.

Abstract:Exploring methods of improving the performance of high-voltage cable XLPE insulation is a hot issue in high-voltage and insulation technology. This paper presented a new method to improve the physical properties of XLPE by doping low-content polyolefin materials, such as LLDPE or HDPE. The new XLPE insulation has significantly improved high-temperature mechanical properties and slightly improved room-temperature mechanical properties. The optimal thermal elongation properties were achieved with a 1 phr content of HDPE and LLDPE, while DC conductivity, DC breakdown strength, and dielectric properties were stable or slightly improved. The properties mentioned above showed a decreasing trend at higher content. This study demonstrated that adding HDPE or LLDPE to LDPE increases the physical entanglement of XLPE molecular chains, which has a similar effect to crosslinks formed by chemical crosslinking in enhancing the mechanical properties of XLPE insulation. This suggests that there is a potential to reduce the concentration of crosslinking agents during XLPE cable manufacturing while maintaining electrical properties and improving mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. It provides a new idea for improving the properties of XLPE insulation for high-voltage DC cables.

Abstract:High voltage AC/DC cables require thicker insulation to ensure excellent insulation performance. Selecting the appropriate crosslinker to design the crosslink and crystalline structure of XLPE is key to the insulating properties. Although the crystallinity of XLPE has been extensively studied by using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeters, few researchers have designed in situ experiments to observe its structure. In this paper, we have created an in situ observational experiment to monitor the structural changes of XLPE insulation. XLPE formed by DTAP crosslinker produces lower gas byproducts, which can effectively reduce the degassing time and energy consumption. The test results and COMSOL simulations indicate that the XLPE formed by straight-chain alkane crosslinkers has better mechanical, thermal and electrical insulating properties than cyclic alkane crosslinkers. Our work is of great significance for selecting suitable crosslinker to control the structure of XLPE and determining the production conditions for high-voltage cables.

Abstract:Polymers have been extensively used for high voltage direct current transmission systems as insulation power cables. Space charge accumulation consistently remains the primary factor contributing to the degradation of the electrical insulation properties of polymers. Grafting modification is a valid approach for suppressing the injection of space charges and free electrons by inducing deep traps. In this paper, the modified polypropylene grafted the group with low ionization energy is reported. The deep traps are revealed by the thermally stimulated depolarization current experiment and the band structure as well as the electrostatic potential by density functional theory simulation. The method with the innovative hybrid functional and basis set is adopted to establish the average local ionization distribution of the grafting group, thus confirming its strong electrophilicity. Furthermore, the modified polypropylene has been proved to obtain higher breakdown strength and operational stability by experiments. This work can provide insights for the design and selection of power cables with excellent electrical insulation properties.

Improving the DC Dielectric Properties of XLPE with Appropriate Content of Dicumyl Peroxide for HVDC Cables Insulation

Abstract:In this research, crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) is developed with selective content of dicumyl peroxide (DCP), and the influence of microstructural properties and chemical composition on the mechanical and direct current (DC) dielectric properties are investigated. The measurements for the microstructural analysis are taken by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), gel content test and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The mechanical properties of XLPE are evaluated by hot-set test. The results of microstructural and chemical composition show that the increase in DCP content increases the crosslinking degree from 74.3% to 81.6%, reduces the crystallinity/lamella thickness from 36.8% to 35.5%/7.6-7.1 nm, reduces the average molecular weight between two crosslinks by 0.01 kg/mol and reduces the oxidation level/carbonyl index. The increase in DCP in XLPE samples decreases the permanent elongation from 2.2% to 0% and elongation rate from 300% to 80% of the cable insulation. The rise in DCP content increases the crosslinking degree due to which the DC resistivity and activation energy is increased. The DC breakdown strength at 30-90 °C is increased due to the increase in crosslinking degree and reduction in carbonyl index/oxidation level. The space charge accumulation is measured at 30 °C under 20-60 kV/mm, resulting in less homo-charges and hetero-charges with the increase in DCP. It is proven that the role of appropriate DCP content is vital in increasing the DC dielectric performance, internal material characteristics and mechanical performance of XLPE.

Abstract:Owing to its lack of crosslinking, polypropylene (PP) is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to crosslinked polyethylene as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable insulation. However, pure PP can accumulate space charges under a HVDC, and thus must be modified for use as an insulating material for HVDC cables. In this study, 4-methylstyrene is grafted onto PP using an aqueous suspension grafting method to improve its properties. The effects of the swelling time, reaction time, and 4-methylphenylene concentration on the reaction were investigated. The optimum process conditions were determined, including an optimum grafting ratio of 0.97%. The volume resistivity, ability to suppress space-charge accumulation, and DC breakdown strength of modified PP were also studied. Modified PP with a grafting ratio of 0.88% showed optimal space-charge suppression and the highest volume resistivity and breakdown strength. The work will facilitate the design and development of more efficient insulation materials for HVDC cables.
Improved DC Dielectric Performance of Cross-Linked Polyethylene Modified by Free Radical-Initiated Grafting BMIE

Abstract:To enhance the direct current (DC) dielectric properties of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) for high-voltage (HV) cable insulation, the polyethylene molecular chain is modified by grafting bismaleimide ethane (BMIE), which creates carrier deep traps within the polymer material. Compared to the traditional modified molecule maleic anhydride (MAH), BMIE has a significantly higher boiling point than the production temperature of XLPE. Additionally, it does not release bubbles during the production process and, thus, preserves the dielectric properties. It was proved by infrared spectroscopy and a gel content test that BMIE was successfully grafted onto the polyethylene molecular chain and had no effect on the crosslinking degree of the polymer while reducing the amount of crosslinker, thereby reducing the influence of the by-products of the decomposition of dicumene peroxide (DCP) on the electrical resistance of polymers. The analysis of DC breakdown field strength, current density, and space charge distribution at various temperatures demonstrates that grafting BMIE can greatly enhance the dielectric properties of insulation. Polar groups in the BMIE molecule create deep trap energy levels in XLPE-g-BMIE, and these trap energy levels contribute to the formation of a charged layer near the electrode, which is shielded by Coulomb potential. As a result, the charge injection barrier increases. Additionally, the presence of these polar groups reduces the mobility of charge carriers through trap-carrier scattering, effectively suppressing the accumulation of space charge within the material. First-principle calculations also confirm that bound states can be introduced as carrier traps by grafting BMIE onto polyethylene molecules. The agreement between experimental results and simulation calculations indicates that grafting BMIE to enhance the dielectric properties of polyethylene is a new and feasible research direction in the exploitation of materials for HVDC cables.

Abstract:Blending thermoplastic elastomers into polypropylene (PP) can make it have great potential for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable insulation by improving its toughness. However, when a large amount of thermoplastic elastomer is blended, the electrical strength of PP will be decreased consequently, which cannot meet the electrical requirements of HVDC cables. To solve this problem, in this paper, the inherent structure of thermoplastic elastomer SEBS was used to construct acetophenone structural units on its benzene ring through Friedel–Crafts acylation, making it a voltage stabilizer that can enhance the electrical strength of the polymer. The DC electrical insulation properties and mechanical properties of acetylated SEBS (Ac-SEBS)/PP were investigated in this paper. The results showed that by doping 30% Ac-SEBS into PP, the acetophenone structural unit on Ac-SEBS remarkably increased the DC breakdown field strength of SEBS/PP by absorbing high-energy electrons. When the degree of acetylation reached 4.6%, the DC breakdown field strength of Ac-SEBS/ PP increased by 22.4% and was a little higher than that of PP. Ac-SEBS, with high electron affinity, is also able to reduce carrier mobility through electron capture, resulting in lower conductivity currents in SEBS/PP and suppressing space charge accumulation to a certain extent, which enhances the insulation properties. Besides, the highly flexible Ac-SEBS can maintain the toughening effect of SEBS, resulting in a remarkable increase in the tensile strength and elongation at the break of PP. Therefore, Ac-SEBS/PP blends possess excellent insulation properties and mechanical properties simultaneously, which are promising as insulation materials for HVDC cables.
