Abstract:Polypropylene (PP)-based grafting modification is a promising and more applicable method to enhance dielectric properties instead of nanocomposites. In this paper, vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES)-grafted PP with different grafting monomer contents are prepared. The micro-morphology, thermal properties and dielectric properties of VTES-grafted PP are characterized and analyzed. The results show that the melting temperature and crystallinity slightly decrease after grafting VTES. Sphere-shaped dispersed phases are observed in micro-morphology characterization, which may be related to the self-polymerization of grafting monomer. The homo-charge injection near cathode is suppressed in grafting-modified PP, presenting low electric field distortion. The DC breakdown strength and DC volume resistivity of grafting-modified PP are significantly raised, exhibiting the improvement of 18.8% and an order of magnitude, respectively. Thermally stimulated current (TSC) results show a large number of deep traps introduced after grafting modification. Numerous deep traps might be beneficial to these improved dielectric properties of VTES-grafted PP as above. PP-based grafting modification shows enhanced dielectric properties and simplified modification process. This work would provide a strategy and reference for the research and development of grafting modified PP-based insulation material for HVDC cable.
Preparation and electrical properties of 4-acetoxystyrene grafted polypropylene for HVDC cable insulation

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is considered to be a potential eco-friendly cable insulation material. However, space charge accumulation in PP under high electric stress limits its application for HVDC cable. In this paper, PP was modified with 4-acetoxystyrene (AOS) by melt grafting to improve electric properties. The molecular structure of the polypropylene-graft-4-acetoxystyrene (PP-g-AOS) was characterized by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The effects of temperature, screw speed, time, initiator content and monomer content on grafting degree of PP-g-AOS were investigated. Furthermore, the influence of grafting degree of PP-g-AOS on space charge suppression, volume resistivity and dc breakdown field strength was investigated. The FT-IR result showed that AOS was successfully grafted onto PP. It was found that under the proper grafting conditions, the obtained PP-g-AOS exhibited a maximum grafting degree of 1.31%. Moreover, PP-g-AOS with grafting degree of 1.14% can suppress space charge efficiently, and increase both volume resistivity and dc breakdown strength. This provides a new idea for the study of polypropylene HVDC cable insulation.

Abstract:High-performance polypropylene (PP) plays an important role in electrical/electronic engineering fields. Especially in high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables it compares well to cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) for its potential application as an eco-friendly material without cross-linking. The space charge injection under high electric stress is main obstacle for the development of HVDC cables. Here we adopted chemical modification on PP with polar functional group to improve the electrical properties, whereby the molecular structure has been designed to obtain excellent insulating material. The space charge suppression, dielectric properties and crystal characteristics of PP with and without grafting with maleic anhydride (MAH) were investigated. Results demonstrated that the MAH was successfully grafted onto PP macromolecular chain. Compared to pure PP, the grafting with 2 wt% MAH can effectively suppress space charge injection and provide better stability in volume resistivity as temperature increases. Besides, their dielectric properties were studied, and the mechanism of space charge suppression was proposed. This provides a useful method to prepare the HVDC cable insulating materials.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is considered to be a rather promising material for HVDC cable insulation. Grafting modi-fication has proved to be an effective method on the electrical property improvements of PP. This paper reports on the highly-enhanced electrical properties of styrene-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-St) and their related mechanism. The influence of grafting styrene on crystallization structures, thermal properties and electrical properties of PP-g-St are characterized and analyzed. These results show that PP-g-St exhibits remarkably enhanced DC volume resistivity, suppressed space charge accumulation and improved DC breakdown strengths as compared to PP. Crystallization observation shows PP-g-St has small, imperfect spherulites with indistinct boundaries, which is strongly correlated to enhanced electrical properties. This study provides an effective grafting strategy to design high-performance HVDC cable insulation materials for bulk power transmission systems.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is considered to be a rather potential material for recyclable HVDC cable insulation. Grafting modification has been proven to be effective to further enhance the dielectric properties of PP. To investigate the grafting effect on the performance of different PPs, homopolymerized PP (PPH), ethylene-propylene copolymer (PEC), and impact PP copolymer (IPC) are, respectively, grafting-modified by styrene, and the comprehensive properties are experimentally studied. The results indicate that all these grafting-modified PPs show enhanced dielectric properties, while the enhancement levels differ. Styrene-grafted PPH presents the best dielectric properties improvement and highest thermostability, but the elastic modulus is also the highest. PEC exhibits moderate dielectric properties enhancement after grafting modification. Grafting-modified IPC shows excellent mechanical properties, but the enhancements on dielectric properties are rather limited. Grafting styrene has no significant influence on the thermal and mechanical properties of PP. In conclusion, PPH is preferred to be the matrix for styrene-grafting to achieve enhanced dielectric properties. However, the mechanical properties still need further modification to meet the demands of cable insulation.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) exhibits excellent insulation properties, high thermo-stability, and recyclable nature, thus expected to be the next-generation insulation material for HV cable application. Chemical grafting modification is an effective technology to improve the electrical properties of polypropylene. In this paper, we develop and report a new-type grafted PP insulation material by water-phase grafting technology. The comprehensive properties including electrical, thermal, and mechanical of it are tested and compared with traditional cable insulation material—crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE). The results show that the grafted PP holds superior thermal properties and enough mechanical flexibility. The electrical properties are of significant advantages, including resistivity enhanced by nearly two degrees of magnitudes, AC/DC breakdown strength raised by over 20%, and obviously suppressed space charge accumulation. These results indicate that grafted PP is very suitable for application in HV cable systems, either AC or DC. This research lays a foundation for the research and development of the next-generation recyclable polypropylene cables at higher voltage levels.

Abstract:Polymers have been extensively used for high voltage direct current transmission systems as insulation power cables. Space charge accumulation consistently remains the primary factor contributing to the degradation of the electrical insulation properties of polymers. Grafting modification is a valid approach for suppressing the injection of space charges and free electrons by inducing deep traps. In this paper, the modified polypropylene grafted the group with low ionization energy is reported. The deep traps are revealed by the thermally stimulated depolarization current experiment and the band structure as well as the electrostatic potential by density functional theory simulation. The method with the innovative hybrid functional and basis set is adopted to establish the average local ionization distribution of the grafting group, thus confirming its strong electrophilicity. Furthermore, the modified polypropylene has been proved to obtain higher breakdown strength and operational stability by experiments. This work can provide insights for the design and selection of power cables with excellent electrical insulation properties.

Abstract:Degassing treatment is critical to remove cross-linking by-products in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable factory joints and prevent early insulation deterioration. In this article, 500-kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cable factory joint samples were prepared, and the physicochemical and temperature-dependent electrical properties of the samples under different degassing times were investigated. The results show that prolonged degassing treatment increases the crystallinity and reduces the tensile properties of the XLPE samples. The samples without degassing have visible micropores near the interface, and these micropores can be eliminated after a longer degassing time. In addition, degassing treatment can reduce the current density, increase the threshold field strength, and enhance the breakdown strength of the samples. A significant negative charge accumulation appears at the interface of the sample without degassing, which dramatically distorts the electric field. Long-term degassing treatment can improve this phenomenon, and the accumulated charge at the interface at elevated temperatures is significantly reduced. Furthermore, a model of the molecular chain microstructure at the interface before and after degassing is proposed. The molecular chain’s energy band structure and electron cloud distribution at the interface are analyzed based on quantum chemical calculation. It is found that cable makers can improve the insulation properties of cable factory joints by appropriately extending the degassing time to avoid interface deterioration.

Abstract:Dually grafted high‐polar chemical groups hinder the charge carrier transport, resulting in enhanced electrical property. Polypropylene (PP) is believed to be a rather promising cable insulating material for high‐capacity electric power system with low carbon emission due to its decent thermo‐resistance and recyclable nature. In this paper, a new dually chemical grafting modification strategy by methyl acrylate (MA) and acrylic acid (AA) is put forward to tailor the charge transportation behavior in PP, thus further enhancing the electrical properties. Experimental results indicate that the dually grafted PP with 2.3 weight percent (wt%) MA and 1.9 wt% AA shows enhanced volume resistivity and electrical breakdown strength than pure PP, and the space charge injection is significantly suppressed. This work further adopts thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) test and computational analysis based on density functional theory (DFT) to reveal the mechanism of enhancement. The analysis shows that grafted chemical groups can introduce quantities of deep traps and electrostatic potential wells which are strongly correlated with the carbonyl group and would hinder the charge transportation thus improving the electrical insulating performances of PP. This work would provide a new route of PP‐based dually grafting modification for the development of high‐voltage cable insulation.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) has become one promising material to potentially replace the cross-link polyethylene used for high voltage direct current cables. Besides the isotactic polypropylene, the block polypropylene (b-PP) and random polypropylene (r-PP) can be synthesized through the copolymerization of ethylene and propylene molecules. In this letter, the effect of morphology and crystalline phases on the insulating electrical properties of PP was investigated. It was found that the introduction of polyethylene monomer resulted in the formation of β and γ phases in b-PP and r-PP. The results from the characteristic trap energy levels indicated that the β and γ phases could induce deep electron traps which enable to capture the carriers. And the space charge accumulation was obviously suppressed. Besides, the decreased electrical conductivity was observed in b-PP and r-PP. It is attributed to the existence of deep traps which can effectively reduce the carrier mobility and density in materials.
Improved DC Dielectric Performance of cPP-g-MAH/iPP/SEBS Composite with Chemical Graft Modification

Abstract:In order to achieve both high toughness and favorable dielectric properties of polypropylene materials, a styrene⁻butadiene⁻styrene block copolymer (SEBS) was employed as a toughening filler, in addition to a copolymerized polypropylene grafted by maleic anhydride (cPP-g-MAH) as a compatibilization modifier, to develop a novel isotactic polypropylene (iPP) composite (cPP-g-MAH/iPP/SEBS composite) with significantly improved direct-current (DC) dielectric performance and tenacity. The underlying physical and chemical mechanisms of modifying electric insulation were studied utilizing micro-structure characterization methods in combination with multiple thermal⁻mechanic⁻electric tests. The SEBS phase islands are uniformly distributed in the PP matrix with evidently improved dispersion due to cPP-g-MAH compatibilization. Compared with iPP, the elastic modulus of cPP-g-MAH/iPP/SEBS composites can be reduced by 58% with doubled thermal elongation, which is still superior to that of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), implying that the composites are qualified in terms of mechanical properties for use as power cables. The space charge accumulation and electric conduction are considerably suppressed in comparison with pure iPP and the iPP/SEBS composite. In the interest of charge-trapping characteristics modified by chemically grafting MAH, the deep traps introduced into polypropylene by grafting MAH were measured with a thermal stimulation current experiment to be 1.2 and 1.6 eV of energy level in trapping depth, verified through the first-principles electronic structure calculations with an all-electron numerical orbital scheme. It was concluded that the acquired high density of deep traps can effectively restrict the carrier transport and suppress the injection of space charge, resulting in a remarkable improvement of DC dielectric properties for the MAH grafted composites. The present work demonstrates that the cPP-g-MAH/iPP/SEBS composites are eligible to be applied to polypropylene-based high-voltage DC cables due to their excellent DC insulation performance, together with the appropriate mechanical properties.

Abstract:High voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission cable is critical for realising sustainability through renewable energy revolution. Eco‐friendly thermoplastic polypropylene (PP)‐based polymers/nanocomposites are regarded as promising candidates for replacing current thermoset crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) cables. As an essential component of the extruded HVDC cable for improving conductor/insulation interface and suppressing charge injection to insulation at high DC electrical stresses, developing semiconducting (SC) screens that are compatible with PP‐based insulation is of similar importance but has not been well studied yet. This work aims at designing PP‐based semiconducting screens and investigating space charge behaviours of SC/PP/SC sandwich specimen to unfold the effect of semiconducting materials, bonding methods, applied DC electric field, and temperature on charge injection, accumulation, transportation, and dissipation in PP‐based insulation. Although conventional thermal, mechanical, and low field electrical characterisations demonstrated that all of the developed semiconducting materials meet the performance criteria of commercial semiconducting materials, their space charge and local electric field distribution varied significantly at high DC fields. Compared with the traditional non‐bonded configuration used at lab‐scale, charge injection was enhanced in hot‐pressed SC/PP/SC samples with tightly bonded interfaces, which better reflects the real situation in extruded cables. High temperature further intensified charge injections. Besides, our results also revealed that high temperature and electric field strongly influence charge mobilities and consequently their distribution and local electric field in PP‐based insulations.

Hindered phenolic antioxidant grafting on tailoring the DC electrical characteristics of polypropylene cable insulation

Abstract:The authors focus on the impact of melt‐free radical grafting with hindered phenolic antioxidants (AO3052) on the electrical properties of polypropylene (PP) for DC cable insulation. The DC conductivity, space charge distribution and breakdown characteristic tests of grafting‐modified PP are performed by comparing unmodified PP. The results demonstrate that the grafting of antioxidants can effectively suppress space charge injection, owing to the deeper trap sites at the grafting molecule. The breakdown strength of the grafted PP is significantly enhanced from 30°C to 90°C and especially achieves a 5.3%–6.7% increase after the same DC‐prestressed time at 90°C. The surface electrostatic potential and molecular orbitals of the grafted PP are calculated. Simulation shows that the antioxidant introduces multi‐level local state traps that can effectively trap the injected space charge, thus decreasing the destruction of molecular chains by electrons and increasing the breakdown strength level. In conclusion, antioxidant grafting modification can improve the breakdown characteristics with or without DC prestress, and thus it appears to be promising in the application of PP‐insulated cables.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is regarded as a recyclable material for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable insulation due to its high melting point and electrical resistivity. This work focuses on the effect of the β-nucleating agent content on the electrical tree growth characteristics in isotactic PP (iPP) insulation. The results demonstrate that adding β-nucleating agents promotes the growth of β-crystals while limiting the α-crystal content. The crystallinity improves with the reduction in the average size of spherulites due to the addition of a β-nucleating agent with 0.1 wt% content. Electrical tree experiments show that the electrical tree growth rate declines as the nucleating agent content rises from 0 to 0.1 wt%. Meanwhile, the expansion coefficient increases with higher nucleating agent content. Continuous increases in the nucleate agent content result in the upward growth rate of electrical trees. When the nucleating agent content is below 0.1 wt%, the α–β-crystal interface introduced by the agent suppresses carrier migration and limits impact ionization, leading to the slower growth rate of the electrical tree. Further addition of the nucleate agent induces a β–β-crystal interface with weak coupling in carriers. It is concluded that β-nucleating agent-modified PP with 0.1 wt% content has potential application in HVDC cable insulation.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP)-based recyclable materials have attracted tremendous interest for HVDC cable insulation application due to their superior electrical properties, e.g., high thermal stability and superior recyclability. Compared with crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE), PP-based materials exhibit the advantages of not only higher working temperature but also facile and efficient cable manufacturing with reduced cost, which are highly desired in HVDC cable manufacturing. Considering their promising advantages, PP-based materials have received significant attention from both academia and industry in the field of HVDC cable insulation. In order to adopt PP as cable insulation material, the mechanical flexibility of PP should be improved. However, the regulation of the mechanical properties inevitably influences the electrical properties of PP. So extensive researches have been conducted on the regulations of the mechanical and electrical properties of PP. This review summarizes the research progress in recyclable polypropylene-based materials for HVDC cable insulation application. Particular attention is placed on the electrical property regulations and material structure-property relationship. The challenges that remain to be addressed and the opportunities for future studies in PP-based recyclable HVDC cable insulation materials are also presented.
Electrical Property of Polypropylene Toughened by β Nucleating Agent

Abstract:High-performance polymer insulating material is a crucial knob for developing HVDC power cables. However, the production process of traditional cross-linked polyethylene, especially degassing, is complicated. The space charge accumulation could render severe electric field distortion under high temperatures and electrical stresses, detrimental to the insulation reliability. As a potential alternative, polypropylene (PP) has excellent properties and is environmentally friendly. However, crucial challenges for the PP application include brittleness deficiency at low temperatures and space charge problems caused by toughened PP composites. In recent years, the β nucleating agent (β-NA) has emerged as an effective additive to improve mechanical and electrical properties due to the introduction of the β-crystal form. Herein, PP/β-NA with different contents and self-assembled β-NA were subsequently prepared, respectively. The melting and crystallization behaviors, crystalline structure, and electrical properties were systematically investigated, and the influence on the space charge characteristics of PP/β-NA composites was explored. We aim to summarize the β-crystal form regulation strategies for advanced PP materials and how they perform, point out the critical characteristic parameters to improve the target performance, and offer suggestions for the rational design for future HVDC cable engineering.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is regarded as an environmentally friendly cable insulation material to replace cross-linked polyethylene owing to its thermoplastic nature, high-temperature resistance, and outstanding dielectric characteristics. Grafting modification was applied to satisfy the demand for a higher-voltage power grid, and it was proved to be effective in enhancing the insulating performance of PP. The electrical tree is a common cause of cable insulation failure. This study examines the electrical tree initiation and growth characteristics of methyl methacrylate (MMA) grafted PP under different temperatures. Our results indicate that high temperature can promote the electrical treeing process, while grafting modification can hinder the process. The trap characteristics show that more deep traps are introduced in the grafted materials that can limit the motion of electrons and, thus, restrict the electrical tree initiation process. The crystallization morphology shows that the size of spherulites increases and the boundaries of the spherulites become blurry with higher MMA content. The compressed amorphous region and the tortuous boundaries of the crystalline can hinder the electrical treeing process. High temperature may improve charge carrier mobility and enhance the molecular chain relaxation, thus enlarging the free volume and finally accelerating the treeing process. The findings of this study would serve as a reference for designing grafted pP insulation for power cables.

Characterization of Polypropylene Modified by Blending Elastomer and Nano-Silica

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) contains promising application prospects in thermoplastic cables for high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission because of its outstanding thermal and dielectric properties. However, the problem of poor toughness and space charge has restricted the application of pure PP in HVDC cables. In this paper, polyolefin elastomer (POE) and nano-silica were blended thoroughly and added into a PP mixture by a melting method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to observe the dispersion of POE and nanoparticles. Thermal properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile tests. The elastomeric properties of composites were improved as the dispersed POE could transfer and homogenize external mechanical forces. DC breakdown results showed that the fail strength of composite with 10 phr POE and 1 phr nano-silica was obviously enhanced. The pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) results showed that the injection and accumulation of space charge was increased by the introduction of POE, while it was restrained by the collective effect caused by nano-silica filling. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrograms showed that secondary ordered structures existed in the composites of PP, POE, and nano-silica, and that the ordered structure around the nanoparticles contributed to the enhancement of breakdown strength. The mechanical and dielectric properties were modified synergistically, which made the modified PP a propitious insulation material for HVDC cables.
Effect of Copolymerization on the Conductivity and Breakdown Properties of Polypropylene for Recyclable Cable Insulation

Abstract:Modified polypropylene (PP) is regarded as a potential eco-friendly insulating material. Blending modification, grafting modification and nanoparticle doping have been used to improve the performance of PP with the inevitable introduce of impurities. Copolymerization is a prospective way to reduce impurity in PP, which deserves further research. In this paper, isotatic polypropylene (iPP), PP copolymer based on iPP (PPC) and cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) were compared through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), conductivity and AC breakdown test. IPP and PPC show higher melting temperature and breakdown field than XLPE, indicating that PP cable can withstand higher temperatures. The results of conductivity show that the current density of PPC is smallest under same electric field and the transition field strength of PPC is highest, indicating that the deep trap level and density of PPC may be higher than those of iPP, which might be caused by the structure defects observed in the results of POM. Therefore, PPC shows better performance than iPP and XLPE, suggesting that copolymerization of PP is a feasible way for future eco-friendly cable insulation.
