Abstract:The combination of micro artificial lightweight aggregates (MALAs) and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) systems constructs high-strength lightweight cementitious composites (LCC), where MALAs play an important role in lightening the weight and controlling the mechanical properties. Thus, a novel MALAs was proposed based on the double emulsion technique for LCC production. The present study emphasizes discussing the effects of manufacturing parameters on the structural characteristics of MALAs, analyzing the release behaviour of internal water of MALAs, and evaluating the properties of MALAs-based LCC. The results indicate the proposed MALAs as lightweight media have a clear core-shell structure, spherical shape and smooth surface. Well-distributed, isolated and micro-scale pores can be constructed for high-performance LCC by MALAs. The particle size and shell thickness of MALAs could be controlled by the stirring rates of the second emulsion and the dosage of shell materials, respectively. The release behaviour of internal water can be delayed by increasing the particle size and shell thickness. The specific strength of developed MALAs-based LCC is higher than that of current lightweight concrete, similar to LCC with fly ash/glass cenospheres, but using less cement content. The addition of 10 % ALAs can increase the 28-day compressive strength by 6 % although incorporating more pores. The autogenous shrinkage of LCC decreases to less than 40 με by the internal curing of MALAs.
