Abstract:Giant planet migration appears widespread among planetary systems in our Galaxy. However, the timescales of this process, which reflect the underlying dynamical mechanisms, are not well constrained, even within the solar system. Since planetary migration scatters smaller bodies onto intersecting orbits, it would have resulted in an epoch of enhanced bombardment in the solar system's asteroid belt. To accurately and precisely quantify the timescales of migration, we interrogate thermochronologic data from asteroidal meteorites, which record the thermal imprint of energetic collisions. We present a database of 40K-40Ar system ages from chondrite meteorites and evaluate it with an asteroid-scale thermal code coupled to a Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion. Simulations require bombardment in order to reproduce the observed age distribution and identify a bombardment event beginning 11.3 +9.5/-6.6 million years after the Sun formed (50% credible interval). Our results associate a giant planet instability in our solar system with the dissipation of the gaseous protoplanetary disk.

Abstract:The origins of the giant planet satellites are debated, with scenarios including formation from a protoplanetary disk, sequential assembly from massive rings, and recent accretion after major satellite–satellite collisions. Here, we test their predictions by simulating outer solar system bombardment and calculating the oldest surface ages on each moon. Our crater production model assumes the projectiles originated from a massive primordial Kuiper Belt (PKB) that experienced substantial changes from collisional evolution, which transformed its size frequency distribution into a wavy shape, and Neptune's outward migration, which ejected most PKB objects onto destabilized orbits. The latter event also triggered an instability among the giant planets some tens of Myr after the solar nebula dispersed. We find all giant planet satellites are missing their earliest crater histories, with the likely source being impact resetting events. Iapetus, Hyperion, Phoebe, and Oberon have surface ages that are a few Myr to a few tens of Myr younger than when Neptune entered the PKB (i.e., they are 4.52–4.53 Gyr old). The remaining midsized satellites of Saturn and Uranus, as well as the small satellites located between Saturn's rings and Dione, have surfaces that are younger still by many tens to many hundreds of Myr (4.1–4.5 Gyr old). A much wider range of surface ages are found for the large moons Callisto, Ganymede, Titan, and Europa (4.1, 3.4, 1.8, and 0.18 Gyr old, respectively). At present, we favor the midsized and larger moons forming within protoplanetary disks, with the other scenarios having several challenges to overcome.

Abstract:The Solar System's orbital structure is thought to have been sculpted by an episode of dynamical instability among the giant planets. However, the instability trigger and timing have not been clearly established. Hydrodynamical modeling has shown that while the Sun's gaseous protoplanetary disk was present the giant planets migrated into a compact orbital configuration in a chain of resonances. Here we use dynamical simulations to show that the giant planets' instability was likely triggered by the dispersal of the gaseous disk. As the disk evaporated from the inside-out, its inner edge swept successively across and dynamically perturbed each planet's orbit in turn. The associated orbital shift caused a dynamical compression of the exterior part of the system, ultimately triggering instability. The final orbits of our simulated systems match those of the Solar System for a viable range of astrophysical parameters. The giant planet instability therefore took place as the gaseous disk dissipated, constrained by astronomical observations to be a few to ten million years after the birth of the Solar System. Terrestrial planet formation would not complete until after such an early giant planet instability; the growing terrestrial planets may even have been sculpted by its perturbations, explaining the small mass of Mars relative to Earth.

Abstract:The solar system’s dynamical state can be explained by an orbital instability among the giant planets. A recent model has proposed that the giant planet instability happened during terrestrial planet formation. This scenario has been shown to match the inner solar system by stunting Mars’ growth and preventing planet formation in the asteroid belt. Here we present a large sample of new simulations of the “Early Instability” scenario. We use an N-body integration scheme that accounts for collisional fragmentation, and also perform a large set of control simulations that do not include an early giant planet instability. Since the total particle number decreases slower when collisional fragmentation is accounted for, the growing planets’ orbits are damped more strongly via dynamical friction and encounters with small bodies that dissipate angular momentum (eg: hit-and-run impacts). Compared with simulations without collisional fragmentation, our fully evolved systems provide better matches to the solar system’s terrestrial planets in terms of their compact mass distribution and dynamically cold orbits. Collisional processes also tend to lengthen the dynamical accretion timescales of Earth analogs, and shorten those of Mars analogs. This yields systems with relative growth timescales more consistent with those inferred from isotopic dating. Accounting for fragmentation is thus supremely important for any successful evolutionary model of the inner solar system.

Impact bombardment chronology of the terrestrial planets from 4.5 Ga to 3.5 Ga

Abstract:Subsequent to the Moon's formation, late accretion to the terrestrial planets modified their silicate crusts and mantles. We combine dynamical N-body and Monte Carlo simulations to determine impact probabilities, impact velocities, and expected mass augmentation onto the terrestrial planets from three sources: planetesimals left over from primary accretion, asteroids from the E-belt, and comets arriving from the outer Solar System. We present estimates of the amount of cometary material striking the terrestrial planets in an early episode of planetesimal-driven giant planet migration (Mojzsis et al., 2019). The Moon and Mars suffer proportionally higher cometary accretion than Venus and Earth. The background mass addition from small leftover planetesimals to Earth and Mars is far less than independent estimates based on their mantle abundances of highly-siderophile elements. This supports the theory that both planets were struck by single large bodies that delivered most of their mass augmentation since primary accretion. We present fits to the impact chronologies valid from 4500 Ma to ca. 3700 Ma. The lunar timeline thus obtained is at odds with both the calibrated Neukum (Neukum et al., 2001) and Werner (Werner et al., 2014; Werner, 2019) chronologies. For Mars, the match with its calibrated Werner chronology is no better; by increasing the mass of the E-belt by a factor of four the dynamical lunar and martian chronologies are in line with that of Werner (2019) and match constraints from the current population of Hungaria asteroids. Yet, neither of our dynamical timelines fit well with that of Neukum. The dynamical lunar and martian chronologies are also different from each other. Consequently, the usual extrapolation of such chronologies from one planetary body to the other is technically inappropriate.

Abstract:Giant impacts refer to collisions between two objects each of which is massive enough to be considered at least a planetary embryo. The putative collision suffered by the proto-Earth that created the Moon is a prime example, though most Solar System bodies bear signatures of such collisions. Current planet formation models predict that an epoch of giant impacts may be inevitable, and observations of debris around other stars are providing mounting evidence that giant impacts feature in the evolution of many planetary systems. This chapter reviews giant impacts, focussing on what we can learn about planet formation by studying debris around other stars. Giant impact debris evolves through mutual collisions and dynamical interactions with planets. General aspects of this evolution are outlined, noting the importance of the collision-point geometry. The detectability of the debris is discussed using the example of the Moon-forming impact. Such debris could be detectable around another star up to 10Myr post-impact, but model uncertainties could reduce detectability to a few 100yr window. Nevertheless the 3% of young stars with debris at levels expected during terrestrial planet formation provide valuable constraints on formation models; implications for super-Earth formation are also discussed. Variability recently observed in some bright disks promises to illuminate the evolution during the earliest phases when vapour condensates may be optically thick and acutely affected by the collision-point geometry. The outer reaches of planetary systems may also exhibit signatures of giant impacts, such as the clumpy debris structures seen around some stars.

Terrestrial planet formation from a ring: long-term simulations accounting for the giant planet instability

Abstract:The process leading to the formation of the terrestrial planet remains elusive. In a previous publication, we have shown that, if the first generation of planetesimals forms in a ring at about 1 AU and the gas disk's density peaks at the ring location, planetary embryos of a few martian masses can grow and remain in the ring. In this work, we extend our simulations beyond the gas-disk stage, covering 200 Myr and accounting for the phase of giant planet instability, assumed to happen at different times. About half of the simulations form a pair of Venus and Earth analogues and, independently, about 10% form a Mars analogue. We find that the timing of the giant planet instability affects statistically the terrestrial system's excitation state and the timing of the last giant impacts. Hence a late instability (about 60 to 100 Myr after the Solar system's birth) is more consistent with a late Moon-formation time, as suggested by radioactive chronometers. However, the late veneer mass (LVM: mass accreted after the last giant impact) of Earth-sized planets suffering a giant impact after 80 My is usually an order of magnitude lower than the value inferred from geochemistry. In addition, the final angular momentum deficit (AMD) of the terrestrial planets tends to be too high. We tested the effect on the final AMD of the generation of debris during collisions and found that it is too small to change these conclusions. We argue that the best-case scenario is that the Moon-forming event occurred between 50 and 80 My, possibly just following the giant planet instability.

Abstract:<p>The dynamical structure of the Solar System can be explained by a period of orbital instability experienced by the giant planets. While a late instability was originally proposed to explain the Late Heavy Bombardment, recent work favors an early instability. Here we model the early dynamical evolution of the outer Solar System to self-consistently constrain the most likely timing of the instability. We first simulate the dynamical sculpting of the primordial outer planetesimal disk during the accretion of Uranus and Neptune from migrating planetary embryos during the gas disk phase, and determine the separation between Neptune and the inner edge of the planetesimal disk. We performed simulations with a range of (inward and outward) migration histories for Jupiter. We find that, unless Jupiter migrated inwards by 10 AU or more, the instability almost certainly happened within 100 Myr of the start of Solar System formation. There are two distinct possible instability triggers. The first is an instability that is triggered by the planets themselves, with no appreciable influence from the planetesimal disk. About half of the planetary systems that we consider have a self-triggered instability. Of those, the median instability time is <span class="math"><math>∼</math></span>4Myr. Among self-stable systems – where the planets are locked in a resonant chain that remains stable in the absence of a planetesimal's disk– our self-consistently sculpted planetesimal disks nonetheless trigger a giant planet instability with a median instability time of 37–62 Myr for a reasonable range of migration histories of Jupiter. The simulations that give the latest instability times are those that invoked long-range inward migration of Jupiter from 15 AU or beyond; however these simulations over-excited the inclinations of Kuiper belt objects and are inconsistent with the present-day Solar System. We conclude on dynamical grounds that the giant planet instability is likely to have occurred early in Solar System history.</p>

The Energy Budgets of Giant Impacts

Abstract:Abstract Giant impacts dominate the final stages of terrestrial planet formation and set the configuration and compositions of the final system of planets. A giant impact is believed to be responsible for the formation of Earth's Moon, but the specific impact parameters are under debate. Because the canonical Moon‐forming impact is the most intensely studied scenario, it is often considered the archetypal giant impact. However, a wide range of impacts with different outcomes are possible. Here we examine the total energy budgets of giant impacts that form Earth‐mass bodies and find that they differ substantially across the wide range of possible Moon‐forming events. We show that gravitational potential energy exchange is important, and we determine the regime in which potential energy has a significant effect on the collision outcome. Energy is deposited heterogeneously within the colliding planets, increasing their internal energies, and portions of each body attain sufficient entropy for vaporization. After gravitational re‐equilibration, post‐impact bodies are strongly thermally stratified, with varying amounts of vaporized and supercritical mantle. The canonical Moon‐forming impact is a relatively low‐energy event and should not be considered the archetype of accretionary giant impacts that form Earth‐mass planets. After a giant impact, bodies are significantly inflated in size compared to condensed planets of the same mass, and there are substantial differences in the magnitudes of their potential, kinetic, and internal energy components. As a result, the conditions for metal‐silicate equilibration and the subsequent evolution of the planet may vary widely between different impact scenarios.Plain Language Summary Collisions between large planetary bodies, known as giant impacts, dominate the final stages of the formation of rocky planets like the Earth and set the configuration and compositions of the final planets. The origin of the terrestrial planets

Abstract:Three major planets, Venus, Earth, and Mercury formed out of the solar nebula. A fourth planetesimal, Theia, also formed near Earth where it collided in a giant impact, rebounding as the planet Mars. During this impact Earth lost ${\approx}4$\% of its crust and mantle that is now is found on Mars and the Moon. At the antipode of the giant impact, $\approx$60\% of Earth's crust, atmosphere, and a large amount of mantle were ejected into space forming the Moon. The lost crust never reformed and became the Earth's ocean basins. The Theia impact site corresponds to Indian Ocean gravitational anomaly on Earth and the Hellas basin on Mars. The dynamics of the giant impact are consistent with the rotational rates and axial tilts of both Earth and Mars. The giant impact removed sufficient CO$_2$ from Earth's atmosphere to avoid a runaway greenhouse effect, initiated plate tectonics, and gave life time to form near geothermal vents at the continental margins. Mercury formed near Venus where on a close approach it was slingshot into the Sun's convective zone losing 94\% of its mass, much of which remains there today. Black carbon, from CO$_2$ decomposed by the intense heat, is still found on the surface of Mercury. Arriving at 616 km/s, Mercury dramatically altered the Sun's rotational energy, explaining both its anomalously slow rotation rate and axial tilt. These results are quantitatively supported by mass balances, the current locations of the terrestrial planets, and the orientations of their major orbital axes.

Rethinking the role of the giant planet instability in terrestrial planet formation models

Abstract:Advances in computing power and numerical methodologies over the past several decades sparked a prolific output of dynamical investigations of the late stages of terrestrial planet formation. Among other peculiar inner solar system qualities, the ability of simulations to reproduce the small mass of Mars within the planets' geochemically inferred accretion timescale of <10 Myr after the appearance of calcium aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) is arguably considered the gold standard for judging evolutionary hypotheses. At present, a number of independent models are capable of consistently generating Mars-like planets and simultaneously satisfying various important observational and geochemical constraints. However, all models must still account for the effects of the epoch of giant planet migration and orbital instability; an event which dynamical and cosmochemical constraints indicate occurred within the first 100 Myr after nebular gas dispersal. If the instability occurred in the first few Myr of this window, the disturbance might have affected the bulk of Mars' growth. In this manuscript, we turn our attention to a scenario where the instability took place after t=50 Myr. Specifically, we simulate the instability's effects on three nearly-assembled terrestrial systems that were generated via previous embryo accretion models and contain three large proto-planets with orbits interior to a collection of ~Mars-mass embryos and debris. While the instability consistently triggers a Moon-forming impact and efficiently removes excessive material from the Mars-region in our models, we find that our final systems are too dynamically excited and devoid of Mars and Mercury analogs. Thus, we conclude that, while possible, our scenario is far more improbable than one where the instability either occurred earlier, or at a time where Earth and Venus' orbits were far less dynamically excited.

Abstract:We study the evolution of debris created in the giant impacts expected during the final stages of terrestrial planet formation. The starting point is the debris created in a simulation of the Moon‐forming impact. The dynamical evolution is followed for 10 Myr including the effects of Earth, Venus, Mars and Jupiter. The spatial distribution evolves from a clump in the first few months to an asymmetric ring for the first 10 kyr and finally becoming an axisymmetric ring by about 1 Myr after the impact. By 10 Myr after the impact 20 per cent of the particles have been accreted on to Earth and 17 per cent on to Venus, with 8 per cent ejected by Jupiter and other bodies playing minor roles. However, the fate of the debris also depends strongly on how fast it is collisionally depleted, which depends on the poorly constrained size distribution of the impact debris. Assuming that the debris is made up of 30 per cent by mass mm–cm‐sized vapour condensates and 70 per cent boulders up to 500 km, we find that the condensates deplete rapidly on ∼1000 yr time‐scales, whereas the boulders deplete predominantly dynamically. By considering the luminosity of dust produced in collisions within the boulder–debris distribution we find that the Moon‐forming impact would have been readily detectable around other stars in Spitzer 24 μm surveys for around 25 Myr after the impact, with levels of emission comparable to many known hot dust systems. The vapour condensates meanwhile produce a short‐lived, optically thick, spike of emission. We use these surveys to make an estimate of the fraction of stars that form terrestrial planets, FTPF. Since current terrestrial planet formation models invoke multiple giant impacts, the low fraction of 10–100 Myr stars found to have warm (>rsim150 K) dust implies that per cent. For this number to be higher, it would require that either terrestrial planets are largely fully formed when the protoplanetary disc disperses, or that impact generated debris consists purely of sub‐km objects such that its signature is short‐lived.

Abstract:Meteorites are a remarkable resource. They capture the imagination of people worldwide with their spectacular entry through Earth's atmosphere as fireballs, and their exotic character of being pieces of other worlds. Scientifically, they are critical to interpreting the early stages of formation of the Solar System, as well as the geological evolution of asteroids, the Moon, and Mars, and they are vital to understanding planetary formation processes. With the burgeoning exploration of extrasolar planetary systems, knowledge of the fundamental process of planetary growth from protoplanetary disks has taken on a new significance. Meteorites provide essential and detailed insight into the formation of planetary systems, although we must bear in mind that they only represent one reference point (our own Solar System) in what is clearly a wide spectrum of possible chemical and physical parameters governing the diverse realm of extrasolar planets. This chapter summarises the nature of our meteorite collections, and the ways in which meteorites contribute to our understanding of the formation and evolution of our own Solar System, with broader implications for planetary systems in general.

Abstract:The bombardment of impactors (leftover planetesimals, asteroids and comets) created numerous impact craters on the Moon. The giant planets in the outer Solar System are believed to have experienced a dynamical instability, in which the migration of giant planets delivers impactors to the inner Solar System bodies 1 , 2 . The difference between the population of large (diameter more than 5 km) impact craters observed on heavily cratered lunar highlands and that on the lunar maria 3 was thought to support the lunar Late Heavy Bombardment, which started 0.6 billion years after planet formation and could have been caused by the late instability of giant planets 4 – 6 . However, large craters on various-aged lunar surfaces have similar size–frequency distributions when considering the preferential erasure of small craters 7 , 8 . In addition, dynamical and geochemical evidence favour an early instability of giant planets at 4.5 Gyr ago 2 , 5 , 9 . Here, we report the evolution at geological scales of regolith thickness on the Moon, which is a proxy for the change of the size–frequency distribution slope for Earth–Moon impactors with diameters less than 50 m (which generate craters with diameters less than 1 km (ref. 10 )). We found an abnormally slow growth of regolith thickness per unit of impact flux before 3.5_ - 0.6^ + 0.3 Gyr ago (3 σ uncertainty), which can best be explained by a population of craters of less than 1 km whose size–frequency distribution had a shallower power-law slope ( - 2.57_ - 0.16^ + 0.30 ) than that afterward ( - 3.24_ - 0.06^ + 0.03 ). The transition time at 3.5 Gyr ago supports the early instability of giant planets, in which dominant Earth–Moon impactors changed from leftover planetesimals to asteroids 5 . The value of −3.24 is consistent with the preferential delivery of small asteroids via Yarkovsky–YORP effects 11 .

Abstract:Understanding the origin and long-term evolution of the Solar System is a fundamental goal of planetary science and astrophysics. This chapter describes our current understanding of the key processes that shaped our planetary system, informed by empirical data such as meteorite measurements, observations of planet-forming disks around other stars, and exoplanets, and nourished by theoretical modeling and laboratory experiments. The processes at play range in size from microns to gas giants, and mostly took place within the gaseous planet-forming disk through the growth of mountain-sized planetesimals and Moon- to Mars-sized planetary embryos. A fundamental shift in our understanding came when it was realized (thanks to advances in exoplanet science) that the giant planets' orbits likely underwent large radial shifts during their early evolution, through gas- or planetesimal-driven migration and dynamical instability. The characteristics of the rocky planets (including Earth) were forged during this early dynamic phase. Our Solar System is currently middle-aged, and we can use astrophysical tools to forecast its demise in the distant future.

Abstract:The dominant accretion process leading to the formation of the terrestrial planets of the Solar System is a subject of intense scientific debate. Two radically different scenarios have been proposed. The classic scenario starts from a disk of planetesimals which, by mutual collisions, produce a set of Moon to Mars-mass planetary embryos. After the removal of gas from the disk, the embryos experience mutual giant impacts which, together with the accretion of additional planetesimals, lead to the formation of the terrestrial planets on a timescale of tens of millions of years. In the alternative, pebble accretion scenario, the terrestrial planets grow by accreting sunward-drifting mm-cm sized particles from the outer disk. The planets all form within the lifetime of the disk, with the sole exception of Earth, which undergoes a single post-disk giant impact with Theia (a fifth protoplanet formed by pebble accretion itself) to form the Moon. To distinguish between these two scenarios, we revisit all available constraints: compositional (in terms of nucleosynthetic isotope anomalies and chemical composition), dynamical and chronological. We find that the pebble accretion scenario is unable to match these constraints in a self-consistent manner, unlike the classic scenario.

Abstract:In the leading theory of lunar formation, known as the giant impact hypothesis, a collision between two planet-size objects resulted in a young Earth surrounded by a circumplanetary debris disk from which the Moon later accreted. The range of giant impacts that could conceivably explain the Earth-Moon system is limited by the set of known physical and geochemical constraints. However, while several distinct Moon-forming impact scenarios have been proposed -- from small, high-velocity impactors to low-velocity mergers between equal-mass objects -- none of these scenarios have been successful at explaining the full set of known constraints, especially without invoking one or more controversial post-impact processes. Allowing for pre-impact rotation of the colliding bodies has been suggested as an avenue which may produce more promising collision outcomes. However, to date, only limited studies of pre-impact rotation have been conducted. Therefore, in the second paper of this series, we focus on pairwise impacts between rotating bodies. Using non-rotating collisions as a baseline, we systematically study the effects of rotation on collision outcomes. We consider nine distinct rotation configurations and a range of rotation rates up to the rotational stability limit. Notably, we identify a population of collisions that can produce low post-impact angular momentum budgets and massive, iron-poor protolunar disks.

Abstract:Material from the surface of a planet can be ejected into space by a large impact, and could carry primitive life forms with it. We performed n-body simulations of such ejecta to determine where in the Solar System rock from Earth and Mars may end up. We find that, in addition to frequent transfer of material among the terrestrial planets, transfer of material from Earth and Mars to the moons of Jupiter and Saturn is also possible, but rare. We expect that such transfer is most likely during the Late Heavy Bombardment or during the next one or two billion years. At this time, the icy moons were warmer and likely had little or no icy shell to prevent meteorites from reaching their liquid interiors. We also note significant rates of re-impact in the first million years after ejection. This could re-seed life on a planet after partial or complete sterilization by a large impact, which would aid the survival of early life during the Late Heavy Bombardment.
