Abstract:In recent years, the thermal safety control of lithium-ion batteries has gradually received considerable critical attention. In this context, this research proposes a refrigerant emergency spray cooling method for lithium-ion ternary battery overheating stage to prevent thermal runaway. A coupled calculation model for the overheating behavior and emergency spray cooling of lithium-ion batteries is established in this paper. Furthermore, the starting point and range of decomposition reaction stage of NCM111 ternary lithium battery are defined by numerical simulation. A research is conducted on the cooling effect of spray in four battery overheating stages, respectively. The results of the study show that during the stage of SEI decomposition stage, the battery overheating decomposition reaction can be prevented by applying a minimum spray pressure of 0.8 MPa. Meanwhile, in the negative-solvent reaction stage, a maximum spray pressure of 2.4 MPa and the increase of the spray duration to 5.4 s can interrupt the overheating decomposition reaction. When it comes to the positive-solvent reaction stage, increasing the number of spray nozzles from double to four can successfully prevent the reaction from continuing. In the electrolyte decomposition reaction stage, refrigerant spray cooling cannot halt the reaction, but it can slow down the temperature rise rate of the battery and the time of thermal runaway, so that the battery reaches 160 ℃, 200 ℃, 240 ℃ time delayed by 10.4 s, 14.3 s and 18.7 s, respectively.
