Abstract:The researchers — who are based at various institutions in Singapore and China — fabricated optoelectronic fibres with single-core and dual-core configurations, by combining their optimized silicon and germanium semiconductor fibres with metal wires, a conducting polymer and an insulating polymer using a convergence fibre drawing technique. The tensile strengths of the silicon-based and germanium-based optoelectronic fibres are 66.80 ± 10.74 MPa and 61.59 ± 6.38 MPa, respectively, which are strong enough for manual and machine weaving. The team show that the approach can be used to create a hat with interknitted germanium optoelectronic fibres that can sense infrared light, and a flexible watchband with light-emitting diodes and an interwoven silicon fibre that measures heart pulses via photoplethysmography.
