Abstract:A new phosphor Y2BaAl4SiO12: Ce3+, Cr3+ yielding much efficient energy transfer from Ce3+ to Cr3+ and strongly emitting deep-far red emission under blue LED excitation has been reported. The doping of Ce3+ into Y2BaAl4SiO12: Cr3+ has greatly enhanced the excitation at blue region with increasing deep-far red emission more than three times. It is highly noticeable that an efficient energy transfer has assisted in the enhancement of the excitation for deep-far red emission illustrated through a stronger 4f→5d transition of Ce3+ than parity-forbidden 4A2→4T1 transition of Cr3+. The yellow emission of Ce3+ was almost completely depressed to nearly zero during the energy transition. The mechanism was considered as dipole-dipole interaction through the decay curve of the yellow emission, where the generation of a strong energy transfer in widely distributed Ce3+ and Cr3+ activators was proceeded through this interaction. It can intensively contribute to a new type of LED plant growth with inducing morphosis of plants under far red light.

Abstract:Recently, deep-red-emitting phosphors that can be excited by ultraviolet (UV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) light have been extensively investigated for plant growth LED applications. However, due to the harmful effects of these high-energy rays on plants, violet- or blue-excited deep-red-emitting phosphors are considered a more appropriate solution. In this work, SrAl12O19:Cr3+ phosphors were synthesized using a simple solid-state reaction, revealing a strikingly sharp deep-red emission band centered at 694 nm and effective excitation by violet light. The optimal SrAl12O19:1.0%Cr3+ phosphor, annealed at 1500°C, exhibits an extended lifetime of 0.549 ms, an energy activation level of 0.239 eV, a good quantum efficiency (QE) of 36.2%, and superior color purity at 100%. Further, an LED prototype with a precise absorption spectrum for far-red phytochrome (Pfr) has been demonstrated. These results indicate that the synthesized SrAl12O19:1.0%Cr3+ phosphors could be used as a promising deep-red-emitting phosphor for plant growth LED.

Abstract:Far‐red phosphor‐converted LEDs are vital for next‐generation plant‐growth lights. A new far‐red phosphor BaY2Ga3.9GeO12:Cr3+ shows high quantum efficiency (98%) and thermal stability (90.2%@423K). Cationic substitution tunes emission (780–708 nm) and enhances luminescence by improving Cr3+ ion lattice occupancy. This phosphor effectively stimulates plant growth, offering an efficient design for far‐red light sources. Far‐red phosphor‐converted light‐emitting diodes are receiving increasing attention as an essential component of the next‐generation plant‐growth lights. However, developing far‐red phosphors with high quantum efficiency, low thermal quenching, and suitable emitting wavelength is crucial and urgent. Herein, a new far‐red phosphor BaY2Ga3.9GeO12:0.1Cr3+ with high internal quantum efficiency (98%) and thermal stability (90.2%@423K) is obtained via the substitution of CaO8 with bigger BaO8 dodecahedrons, which is attributed to variations in the lattice environment of Cr3+. Meanwhile, controllable emission tuning from 780 to 708 nm and enhanced luminescence performance are achieved due to the cation substitution can reduce the production of Cr4+ and modulate the lattice occupancy of the Cr3+ ions, and the enhancement of metal‐ligand interactions resulting in the enhancement of the crystal field and the breaking of the forbidden d‐d transition of Cr3+. The proof‐of‐concept demonstration of the pakchoi lighting experiment reveals the great potential of BaY2Ga3.9GeO12:Cr3+ phosphor in stimulating plant growth and pushing the yield. These results demonstrate the feasibility of cationic substitution to optimize the optical performance of Cr3+‐doped phosphors, providing an alternative strategy for designing efficient far‐red light sources for plant lighting.

Abstract:A novel phosphor, Ca2YAl3Ge2O12:Cr3+, synthesized via a high‐temperature solid‐phase method, shows broad emission (600–1200 nm) under blue light, with a high 78.2% internal quantum yield and 85% thermal quenching at 373 K. The pc‐LED made with this phosphor led to a notable 33% boost in Italian lettuce biomass, offering a premium choice for far‐red light plant devices. Cr3+‐doped phosphors are highly recognized in various fields for their remarkable luminous efficiency and spectral flexibility, including modern agriculture and horticulture. However, the shortage of suitable Cr3+‐doped phosphors for far‐red LED devices has inhibited their popularization in plant lighting. Herein, an innovative Cr3+‐doped phosphor Ca2YAl3Ge2O12:Cr3+ (CYAG:Cr3+), achieving a broad far‐red emission at 770 nm upon 450 nm blue light excitation is designed. The optimal CYAG:Cr3+ phosphor exhibits a high internal quantum yield of 78.2% and low thermal‐quenching behavior of 85%@373 K. Thus, the fabricated phosphor‐converted LEDs (pc‐LEDs) for plant far‐red lighting have a high output power of 33.3 mW and photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 11.5% at 100 mA. The potential of CYAG:Cr3+ in plant lighting is assessed by supplementing the far‐red lighting of Italian lettuce with fabricated pc‐LEDs, and the biomass of Italian lettuce is significantly increased by 33%. The successful development of CYAG:Cr3+ phosphors provides a high‐quality option for plant far‐red light devices and further stimulates the development of new Cr3+‐doped plant‐lighting phosphors.

Abstract:Phytochrome PFR plays a key role in plant photomorphogenesis, and its perception of far-red light is essential, but how to obtain an efficient far-red phosphor to achieve accurate light filling remains as a huge challenge. In this study, Gd1-y-zAl3-x(BO3)4: xCr3+, yLu3+, zSm3+ (GAB: xCr3+, yLu3+, zSm3+) series phosphors were synthesized by high temperature solid state method. By doping Lu3+, the emission intensity of Cr3+ could increase as high as 20%. With the introduction of Sm3+, the emission intensity of Cr3+ was further increased by 29%. Particularly, the emission spectra can be tuned by varying the concentration ratio of Sm3+ and Cr3+, more suitable for the absorption spectrum of PFR. Moreover, the internal quantum yield and external quantum yield of GL0.1AB: 0.03Cr3+ and GL0.1AB: 0.03Cr3+, 0.003Sm3+ are 83.1%, 24.7% and 78.1%, 26.3%, respectively. There are high anti-thermal quenching properties in prepared phosphors at 423 K, with 107.6% (GAB: 0.03Cr3+), 103.1% (GL0.1AB: 0.03Cr3+) and 102.7% (GL0.1AB: 0.003Sm3+, 0.03Cr3+). Finally, the phosphors were made into pc-LED devices, which can realize the adjustable orange-red and far-red luminescence and meet the needs of plant lighting applications. In the light-regulated plant growth experiment, compared with the control group, far-red light promoted the root growth of plants, confirming the application potential of the prepared phosphors in indoor plant cultivation.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of crystalline silicon solar cells has reached a bottleneck. Further improving the PCE is an important current research topic. This Letter reports a new phosphor Y2SrAl4SiO12:Ce3+, Cr3+. Under the excitation in the wavelength range of 320-650 nm, the phosphor Y2SrAl4SiO12:Ce3+, Cr3+ exhibits a deep-red emission in the 500-800 nm range. Due to the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Cr3+, the luminescence intensity of Cr3+ is further enhanced. This matches well with the spectrum of silicon solar cells. Because of the powerful absorption and high internal quantum efficiency, Y2SrAl4SiO12:Ce3+, Cr3+ was used to prepare energy down-conversion (EDC) films. By applying the EDC film on the surface of silicon solar cells, the relative PCE increases by 2.018%. These results indicate that Y2SrAl4SiO12:Ce3+, Cr3+ is an excellent deep-red garnet structured phosphor and furthermore has a positive effect on the enhancement of the PCE of solar cells.

Abstract:Traditional Eu3+-activated inorganic phosphors are habitually used for general lighting and display because they generally emit either intense orange (5D0-7F1) or red (5D0-7F2) light whose wavelength is shorter than 630 nm. However, less known nor focused is that Eu3+ at sites with specific symmetry can intensify its 5D0-7F4 transition, enabling Eu3+ itself to emit deep red light (>700 nm) even stronger than the above orange and red ones. Herein, a novel Eu3+-activated phosphor, Ca2TbSn2Al3O12:Eu3+, is developed from the garnet structure. Differing from other Eu3+-activated phosphors, the 5D0-7F4 transition of Eu3+ in the host is dominant and the orange, red and deep red emissions are balanced. Such special features of Eu3+ luminescence mainly meet the need of phytochromes (PFR and PR) in plants. Additionally, bridge style energy transfer from the host composition element Tb3+ to the activator Eu3+ can be observed. It is found the Tb3+-Eu3+ energy transfer here takes through the mechanism of dipole-dipole interaction and the simulation on decay curve of Eu3+ upon Tb3+ excitation, for the first time, confirms the existence of terbium bridge energy transfer. For the Ca2Tb0.60Sn2Al3O12:0.40Eu3+, the energy transfer efficiency is as high as 94.4% and the emission color is totally red. Thermal quenching studies reveal that the emission intensity of the phosphor at 425 K sustains 80% of its initial intensity at room temperature. By fabricating the phosphor with a 380 nm LED chip, a plant-growth LED device can be obtained.

Abstract:In modern agriculture, light plays an important role in plant growth. Far red light controls the whole growth process of plants from germination to vegetative growth to flowering. Here, we report the preparation and photoluminescence (PL) performance of Cr,Bi co-doped SrGdAlO4 phosphors by solution combustion method. The SrGdAlO4:Cr3+,Bi3+ phosphors exhibit far red broadband PL of 660–780 nm excited at 458 nm, and the maximum emission peak position is at 713 nm. It was found Cr3+ and Bi3+ replaced the positions of Al3+ and Gd3+ in the host material, respectively. The PL performance of SrGdAlO4:Cr3+,Bi3+ phosphors mainly depends on the 2E2 → 4A2 transition of Cr3+, and the addition of Bi3+ can effectively enhance the PL intensity of the phosphors. Notably, the SrGdAlO4:Cr3+,Bi3+ phosphors also exhibit obvious far red PL when coated onto glass substrate or mixed with plastics without affecting their visible light transmission. We believe our work will excite interests in further exploring the practical application of SrGdAlO4:Cr3+,Bi3+ phosphors as plant growth regulator in greenhouse.

Abstract:Trivalent europium-based monochromatic red light-emitting phosphors are an essential component to realize high-performance smart lighting devices; however, the concentration and thermal quenching restrict their usage. Here, we report a series of efficient Eu3+-substituted Li3Y3BaSr(MoO4)8 red-emitting phosphors based on a stratified scheelite structure with negligible concentration and thermal quenching. All of the host and phosphor compositions crystallize in monoclinic crystal structure (space group C2/c). All of the phosphor compositions produce narrow-band red emission (FWHM ∼6 nm), which is highly apparent to the human eyes, and lead to exceptional chromatic saturation of the red spectral window. Concurrently, detailed investigations were carried out to comprehend the concentration and thermal quenching mechanism. Absolute quantum yields as high as 88.5% were obtained for Li3Y0.3Eu2.7BaSr(MoO4)8 phosphor with virtuous thermal stability (at 400 K, retaining 87% of its emission intensity). The light-emitting diodes were constructed by coupling Li3BaSrY0.3Eu2.7(MoO4)8 red phosphor with a near-UV LED chip (395 nm) operated at 20 mA forward bias, and the hybrid white LED (an organic yellow dye + red Li3Y3BaSr(MoO4)8:Eu3+ phosphor integrated with an NUV LED chip) showed a low CCT (6645 K), high CRI (83) values, and CIE values of x = 0.303; y = 0.368, which indicated that the synthesized phosphors can be a suitable red component for white LEDs. In addition, we have systematically investigated the Sm3+ and Sm3+, Eu3+ activation in Li3Y3BaSr(MoO4)8 to display the latent use of the system in plant growth applications and establish that the phosphor exhibits orange red emission with an intense deep-red emission (645 nm (4G5/2 → 6H9/2)). The phytochrome (Pr) absorption spectrum well matched the fabricated deep-red LED (by integrating a NUV LED + Li3Y3BaSr(MoO4)8:Sm3+ and Eu3+ phosphor) spectral lines.

Abstract:Far-red light plays a crucial role in plant growth, development, and flowering as a light signal. However, efficiently obtaining far-red light that well-matches the plant-photosensitive pigment P fr remains a significant challenge in indoor agriculture. In this study, a far-red phosphor, BaGd 2 Al 2 Ga 2 GeO 12 :Cr 3+ (BGAGG:Cr 3+ ), was successfully synthesized, using a high-temperature solid-phase method. Under 450 nm excitation, its emission maximum is at 712 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 92 nm, which well-matches with P fr . Combined with a blue LED chip, this phosphor was used to create a pc-LED device for bok choy and Micro-Tom cultivation experiments. Under the irradiation of far-red light, the biomass of bok choy increased by 39%, and the flowering and fruiting of Micro-Tom was promoted, demonstrating its potential in plant lighting applications.

Abstract:Far-red/phytochrome (PFR) plays a key role in photomorphogenesis of plants. However, how to obtain a near-infrared (NIR) emitting phosphor with high external quantum efficiency (EQE), suitable spectral profile, and low thermal quenching remains a huge challenge. Herein, a NIR phosphor, Gd2.4Lu0.6Ga4AlO12:Cr3+,H3BO3 (GLGA:Cr3+) was developed via regulating the crystal field environment and adding fluxes, which exhibits a peak maximum at 728 nm with a relatively narrow full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of 107 nm, matching well with the absorption band of PFR. Upon 450 nm excitation, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and EQE of the optimal phosphor are 90.3% and 32.0%, respectively. At 423 K, the integrated emission intensity of the investigated phosphor is about 75% of that at room temperature. Benefiting from the excellent optical performance, a NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) was fabricated, which shows a NIR output power of 505.99 mW and photoelectric conversion efficiency of 11.24% at 300 mA. Moreover, plant growth experiments demonstrate that the biomass of pea seedlings is increased by 67.72% under supplementary NIR light irradiation. The findings of this research will motivate further research on new Cr3+-doped NIR phosphors for regulating photomorphogenesis of plants.

Abstract:This research presents a new phosphor that effectively converts green light into deep red light, which is advantageous for plant growth, thereby facilitating spectral regulation and enhancing luminescence. The phosphor can be efficiently excited by sunlight, thereby optimizing sunlight utilization. Furthermore, the material exhibits exceptional stability and efficiency for use in outdoor agricultural lighting applications. The research utilized a strategy of chemical unit co‐substitution, successfully developing a novel blue‐green to green excited, deep red‐emitting phosphor, Ca1‐zSrzLi1‐xMg2xAl3‐xN4:yEu2+ (CLA‐2xM‐zS:yEu, 0≤x≤0.8, 0.003≤y≤0.01, 0≤z≤1), through the replacement of [Li−Al]4+ by [Mg−Mg]4+. This phosphor uniquely converts unusable green light to growth‐enhancing deep red, optimizing it for outdoor agriculture. Doping with Sr creates traps, causing a redshift in emission peaks, as confirmed by 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, indicating Li presence and lattice changes. Ca0.2Sr0.8Li0.5MgAl2.5N4:0.005Eu2+ (CLAM‐0.8S) phosphor maintained high luminescence intensity under extreme conditions of 85 °C/85% RH, demonstrating excellent photoluminescence performance and chemical stability, compared with conventional SrLi0.5MgAl2.5N4:0.005Eu2+ (SLMA) and SrLiAl3N4:0.005Eu2+(SLA). Experimental results surprised that the unique Ca0.2Sr0.8Li0.8Mg0.4Al2.8N4:0.005Eu2+ (CLA‐0.4M‐0.8S) prepared light‐converting film, which is mainly excited by green light, demonstrated a 20% increase in optical density of Chlorella compared to the PP film and a remarkable 97.5% increase compared to the control group without any film. These findings suggest that this film has significant potential for applications in outdoor agriculture and other fields.

Abstract:Far‐red‐emitting (700−740 nm) phosphors are essential for the fabrication of plant lighting phosphor‐converted light‐emitting diodes (pc‐LEDs). However, the development of highly efficient, thermally stable, and spectrally matched far‐red phosphors still remains a challenge. Herein, far‐red GdAlO3:Cr3+ (GAO:Cr3+) phosphors were synthesized via solid‐state reaction and investigated for plant lighting pc‐LED applications. A low‐temperature flux‐assisted synthesis strategy was adopted to improve the crystalline quality, suppress the defect formation, and maintain the valence state of Cr3+ in the phosphors, finally leading to significant luminescent enhancement (∼10 times). The GAO:Cr3+ phosphors show the 2E sharp‐line emissions around 730 nm, which is highly matched with the far‐red absorption band of plants. The optimized GAO:0.01Cr3+ phosphor exhibits a high internal quantum efficiency of 98.3% and zero thermal quenching even up to 250°C. The fabricated pc‐LED can generate an overall output power of 78.1 mW at 100 mA drive current, with a high energy conversion efficiency of 25.3%. Photoluminescence properties of Eu3+ and Al3+-doped Ca2ZnSi2O7 red phosphors for plant growth LEDs

Abstract:A set of Ca 2 ZnSi 2 O 7 :Eu 3+ and Ca 2 ZnSi 2 O 7 :Eu 3+ , Al 3+ red phosphors were prepared by the solid-phase reaction method. With 394 nm as the excitation wavelength, all samples were characterized by two major emission bands around 618 nm ( 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 ) and 702 nm ( 5 D 0 → 7 F 4 ). Ca 2 ZnSi 2 O 7 :0.03Eu 3+ phosphor exhibits the best luminescence intensity and its luminescent property is consumed enhanced by doping with Al 3+ . The quantum yield (QY) of Ca 2 ZnSi 2 O 7 :0.03Eu 3+ and Ca 2 ZnS i2 O 7 :0.03Eu 3+ ,0.03Al 3+ reaches 77.79% and 81.73%, respectively. In addition, Ca 2 ZnSi 2 O 7 :0.03Eu 3+ and Ca 2 ZnSi 2 O 7 :0.03Eu 3+ ,0.03Al 3+ samples exhibit good photothermal stability. The color coordinates of Ca 2 ZnSi 2 O 7 :0.03Eu 3+ are (0.641,0.358) with a color purity of 91.97%. Doping by Al 3+ has little influence on the color coordinate and color purity of Ca 2 ZnSi 2 O 7 :0.03Eu 3+ . The above finding reveals that the prepared phosphors have great potential for application in indoor plant growth light illumination and other fields.

Abstract:Near infrared light plays an important role in promoting the growth and development of plants. Light at 600–800 nm is conducive to the growth and development of plant stems and leaves. In this study, a series of near-infrared phosphors Y2MAl4SiO12:Cr3+ (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) were synthesized by high temperature solid phase method. The local environment of Cr3+ in Y3Al5O12(YAG) structure was regulated by different Mg2+/Ca2+/Sr2+/Ba2+-Si4+ co-substituting Y3+-Al3+. The crystal structures of the phosphors were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement. With the entry of Mg2+→Ba2+ into the matrix lattice, the corresponding luminescence intensity of Mg2+→Ba2+ is enhanced, the spectra show a large degree of redshift of about 50 nm and the spectra of Mg2+→Ba2+ samples widen by 12 nm. The results show Y2BaAl4SiO12: Cr3+ has a better luminescence property and 0.03 mol is an optimized content. The internal quantum efficiency (IQY) is 68.02% and integrated emission intensity at 150 °C remains 40.2% of the initial emission intensity. The calculated activation energy ΔE is 1.58eV. The spectra of Y2BaAl4SiO12:0.03Cr3+ phosphors are well matched with the absorption spectra of PR and PFR, which is expected to have potential applications in plant growth.

Abstract:In this work, we synthesized a series of Gd2SrAl2O7: Mn4+/Bi3+/Na+ phosphors by sol-gel method. The experimental results show that there is energy transfer from Bi3+ to Mn4+. By introducing Bi3+ and Na+ ions into the host, emission intensity of the optimal phosphor can be increased to 2.5 times that of Gd2SrAl2O7: Mn4+ and its internal quantum yield is as high as 79.9%. Furthermore, the optimal phosphor also exhibits satisfactory luminescence thermal stability, whose PL intensity at 423 K retained 80.2% of that at room temperature and the activation energy reaches up to 0.45 eV. Mechanism of photoluminescence improvement can be attributed to efficient energy transfer, charge compensation and enhanced crystal rigidity. Packaged LED device exhibits dazzle far red light and its PL spectrum widely overlaps with the absorption band of phytochrome PFR. The performance indexes support the prospective application of the optimal phosphor in plant growth lighting.

Abstract:At present, most blue‐red composite LED light sources are widely used in the field of plant lighting. However, their full‐width at half‐maximum (FWHM) of blue light is too small to meet the requirements of plants for photosynthesis. Herein, a dual‐emitting single‐phase self‐luminescent phosphor CaEuAl3O7 (CEAO) is reported in this study, which provides broadband blue emission of Eu2+ ions and red emissions of Eu3+ ions. According to the optical properties of Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions in the CEAO phosphor, it can be found that all emissions are consistent with the absorption of chlorophylls and pigment carotenoids. In addition, the temperature sensing based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) in the CEAO phosphor is also studied and the maximum sensitivity (S ) can reach as high as 6.90% K‐1 at 313 K. The results indicate that the single‐component phosphor CEAO with blue and red double‐color emission possesses an outstanding potential in plant growth lamps and optical thermometry applications.

Abstract:Far-red phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) are potential efficient and cost-effective light sources for regulating the photomorphogenesis of plants, but it still lacks ideal far-red phosphors with right excitation and emission bands, high quantum efficiency and high thermal stability. Here, we developed an excellent far-red phosphor Gd3Al2Ga3O12:Cr3+ (GAGG: Cr3+). Upon blue light excitation, GAGG: Cr3+ exhibits efficient far-red emission peaking at 720 nm with internal quantum efficiency as high as 94.1% and zero thermal quenching even at 150 °C. Moreover, a high-performance pc-LED device was fabricated by using the optimized GAGG: Cr3+ as the color converter, which can radiate 61.03 mW far-red light at 100 mA with a record photoelectric conversion efficiency of 20.6%. The results indicate that GAGG: Cr3+ holds great promise for plant-growth lighting and other LED applications.
