Abstract:The high efficient and clean coal combustion with fundamental deep low pollution emission was extensively explored worldwide. In this work, the Shenmu bituminous coal was preheated in a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) and this modified fuel including the preheated fuel and the coal gas was burned in a down-fired combustor (DFC) under the O2/CO2 atmospheres. The microstructure change of fuel was analyzed to reveal the reaction process and particle change behavior during high temperature coke combustion. Analysis at the micro scale was important for understanding macro phenomena and achieving deep low pollution emission. The results showed that the main forms of N, C, and O elements in coal were pyrrole, hydrocarbon (aromatics or aromatic substituted alkanes), and carbon-oxygen single bond (including ether and hydroxyl) respectively. During the preheating process, pyrrole converted to pyridine, the coal char reached a state of deep oxidation on the surface, and the stable structure between carbon and oxygen was destroyed. Besides, the number of reacting sites increased after preheating process, which was beneficial to the further combustion.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to analyze the changes in fuel microstructure in an O2/CO2 atmosphere by pre - heating the Shenmu bituminous coal in a circulating fluidized bed (CFB), so as to reveal the reaction mechanism and particle change behavior during the high - temperature coke combustion process. The research aims to understand the influence of microscopic phenomena on macroscopic phenomena and achieve deep - level low - pollution emissions. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Changes in nitrogen functional groups**: Through X - ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, the main forms of nitrogen in coal (such as pyrrole, pyridine, quaternary nitrogen and nitric oxide) and their conversions during the pre - heating process are studied. The results show that pyrrole - nitrogen is converted into pyridine - nitrogen during the pre - heating process, and at the same time, the surface of the char reaches a deep - oxidation state and the stable structure is destroyed. 2. **Changes in carbon functional groups**: Analyze the main forms of carbon in coal (such as hydrocarbons, ethers or hydroxyls, carbonyls and carboxyls) and their changes during the pre - heating process. The results show that the proportion of hydrocarbons decreases significantly after pre - heating, while the proportion of carboxyls increases significantly, which reflects the deep - level oxidation of the coal surface during the pre - heating process. 3. **Changes in oxygen functional groups**: Study the main forms of oxygen in coal (such as carbon - oxygen single bonds, carbonyls and carboxyls) and their changes during the pre - heating process. The results show that the carbon - oxygen stable structure is destroyed during the pre - heating process, and more carbonyls and carboxyls are formed. 4. **Changes in activation sites of carbon structure**: Through Raman spectroscopy analysis, the changes in the carbon structure of coal before and after pre - heating are studied. The results show that the proportion of the stable graphite structure of the fuel decreases after pre - heating, and the number of reaction sites increases, which is conducive to further combustion. In general, through detailed microscopic analysis, this paper reveals the changes in the chemical structure of coal during the pre - heating combustion process, providing a theoretical basis for further controlling the parameters of the pre - heating process, improving fuel adaptability and reducing NOx emissions.
