Abstract:In this study, the laminar flow of nanofluid through both backward-facing step micro- and mini-channels under the influence of a transverse magnetic field is simulated for a specific range of volume fraction (0 ≤ ψ ≤ 0.04), Reynolds (100 ≤ Re ≤ 400), and Hartmann (0 ≤ Ha ≤ 40) numbers. The performance of the homogeneous and VOF models in accurately predicting the hydrothermal behavior of the nanofluid is evaluated. In both micro- and mini-channels, the friction coefficient is significantly enhanced with increasing magnetic field strength. In a micro-channel, the friction coefficient decreases with volume fraction; however, in a mini-channel, it either remains unchanged or increases (for strong magnetic fields) with volume fraction. The Nusselt number is enhanced under the applied magnetic field; however, this enhancement is more remarkable for the mini-channel compared to the micro-channel. In the mini-channel, the Nusselt number increases with magnetic field strength, whereas, in the micro-channel, it may increase or decrease depending on the values of Reynolds number and volume fraction. Under a transverse magnetic field, the performance coefficient of the system is enhanced. At higher volume fractions, this enhancement occurs at a higher rate, resulting in remarkable values for the performance coefficient. However, increasing the magnetic field strength does not necessarily increase the performance coefficient. Except for strong magnetic fields, the homogeneous approach yields accurate results for modeling nanofluid flow through a backward-facing step micro-channel. For a backward-facing step mini-channel, the use of the two-phase (VOF) model is advised.
