Abstract:We report a dramatic change in the intensity of a Raman mode with applied magnetic field, displaying a gigantic magneto-optical effect. Using the nonmagnetic layered material MoS2 as a prototype system, we demonstrate that the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the layers produces a dramatic change in intensity for the out-of-plane vibrations of S atoms, but no change for the in-plane breathing mode. The distinct intensity variation between these two modes results from the effect of field-induced broken symmetry on Raman scattering cross-section. A quantitative analysis on the field-dependent integrated Raman intensity provides a unique method to precisely determine optical mobility. Our analysis is symmetry-based and material-independent, and thus the observations should be general and inspire a new branch of inelastic light scattering and magneto-optical applications.

Abstract:Giant magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) that shows a different response to incident wave with left or right-handed circular polarization under external magnetic field is promising for magneto-optical sensing, revealing symmetry and degeneracy information of electronic states. However, traditional methods and materials that are used to obtain significant MCD involve highly strong external magnetic field. Based on the excitation of subradiant plasmonic mode and Fano resonance in graphene oligomers in the mid-infrared region, we numerically demonstrate that MCD is enhanced three times larger than the previously reported method, based on the resonance of electric dipole plasmonic mode. This giant MCD is attributed to the remarkably different excitation efficiency of subdradiant plasmonic mode due to the interparticle coupling under left or right-handed circular polarization incidence and external magnetic field. Our results offer an effective mechanism to enhance MCD signal at the nanoscale, which facilitates the sensing, spintronic, nanophotonics and other such fields.
Controlling plasmon-induced transparency of graphene metamolecules with external magnetic field

Abstract:We numerically demonstrate dynamically tuneable plasmoninduced transparency in a pi-shaped metamolecules made of graphene nanostrips by applying external static magnetic field. It is shown that for graphene nanostrips with appropriate Fermi energy, the resonant wavelength, line-shape, and the polarization of transmitted light in the mid-infrared can be effectively controlled by magnetic field. In particular, giant polarization rotation exceeding 20 degrees has been observed in asymmetric graphene metamolecules, which is further enhanced to almost 40 degrees due the Faraday effect in the applied magnetic field, at around 9 mu m wavelength, much higher frequency than the Faraday rotation observed in a semi-infinite graphene microribbons. The results offer a flexible approach for the development of compact, tunable graphene-based photonic devices. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The recent discovery of 2D magnets has revealed various intriguing phenomena due to the coupling between spin and other degrees of freedoms (such as helical photoluminescence, nonreciprocal SHG). Previous research on the spin-phonon coupling effect mainly focuses on the renormalization of phonon frequency. Here we demonstrate that the Raman polarization selection rules of optical phonons can be greatly modified by the magnetic ordering in 2D magnet CrI3. For monolayer samples, the dominant A(1g) peak shows an abnormally high intensity in the cross-polarization channel at low temperatures, which is forbidden by the selection rule based on the lattice symmetry. For the bilayer, this peak is absent in the cross-polarization channel for the layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and reappears when it is tuned to the ferromagnetic (FM) state by an external magnetic field. Our findings shed light on exploring the emergent magneto-optical effects in 2D magnets.

Abstract:Optical excitation of chiral phonons plays a vital role in studying the phonon-driven magnetic phenomena in solids. Transition metal dichalcogenides host chiral phonons at high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone, providing an ideal platform to explore the interplay between chiral phonons and valley degree of freedom. Here, we investigate the helicity-resolved magneto-Raman response of monolayer MoS2 and identify a doubly degenerate Brillouin-zone-center chiral phonon mode at ~270 cm-1. Our wavelength- and temperature-dependent measurements show that this chiral phonon is activated through the resonant excitation of A exciton. Under an out-of-plane magnetic field, the chiral phonon exhibits giant Zeeman splitting, which corresponds to an effective magnetic moment of ~2.5mu_B. Moreover, we carry out theoretical calculations based on the morphic effects in nonmagnetic crystals, which reproduce the linear Zeeman splitting and Raman cross-section of the chiral phonon. Our study provides important insights into lifting the chiral phonon degeneracy in an achiral covalent material, paving a new route to excite and control chiral phonons.

High-yield helicity-resolved Raman scattering with in-plane propagation of light in monolayer MoS 2

Abstract:In-plane propagation of excited light in layered materials boosts the observation of novel phenomena, which differ from out-of-plane propagation. In this work, we perform the Raman study with light propagation parallel to the plane of layered MoS2. The Raman signal is unveiled at least an order of magnitude larger than that perpendicular to the plane when the excitation photon energy at ∼2.81 eV. We attribute this high-yield Raman spectra to the stronger photon–exciton coupling with in-plane propagation of light. Furthermore, we show that the exciton-mediated phonon excitation in the first-order Raman process is dominant with consideration of angular momentum transfer between phonons and photons through the measurements of the circularly polarized Raman spectra. This experimental setup configuration paves a way with high efficiency to investigate the phonon information in layered materials.

Abstract:Twisted van der Waals homo- and hetero-structures have aroused great attentions due to their unique physical properties, providing a new platform to explore the novel two-dimensional (2D) condensed matter physics. The robust dependence of phonon vibrations and electronic band structures on the twist angle has been intensively observed in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) homo-structures. However, the effects of twist angle on the lattice vibrational properties in the TMD heterostructures have not caused enough attention. Here, we report the distinct evolutions of Raman scattering and the underlying interlayer interactions in the twisted WS2/MoS2 heterostructures. The shifts and linewidths of E2g(Γ) and A1g(Γ) phonon modes are found to be twist angle dependent. In particular, analogous to that of the twisted TMD homostructures, the frequency separations between E2g(Γ) and A1g(Γ) modes of MoS2 and WS2 in the twisted heterostructures varying with twist angle correlate with the interlayer mechanical coupling, essentially originating from the spacing-related repulsion between sulfur atoms. Moreover, the opposite shift behaviors and broadening of A1g(Γ) modes caused by charge transfer are also observed in the twisted heterostructures. The calculated interlayer distances and band alignment of twisted WS2/MoS2 through density functional theory further evidence our interpretations on the roles of the interlayer mechanical coupling and charge transfer in variations of Raman features. Such understanding and controlling of interlayer interaction through the stacking orientation are significant for future optoelectronic device design based on the newly emerged 2D heterostructures.

Abstract:In this work, we use Raman spectroscopy as a nondestructive and rapid technique for probing the van der Waals (vdW) forces acting between two atomically thin crystals, where one is a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC). In this work, MoS2 is used as a Raman probe: we show that its two Raman-active phonon modes can provide information on the interaction between the two crystals. In particular, the in-plane vibration (E2g(1)) provides information on the in-plane strain, while the out-of-plane mode (A1g) gives evidence for the quality of the interfacial contact. We show that a vdW contact with MoS2 is characterized by a blue shift of +2 cm(-1) of the A1g peak. In the case of a MoS2/graphene heterostructure, the vdW contact is also characterized by a shift of +14 cm(-1) of the 2D peak of graphene. Our approach offers a very simple, nondestructive, and fast method to characterize the quality of the interface of heterostructures containing atomically thick TMDC crystals.

Abstract:The false-color (3D type) image of the intensity of the Raman spectra of monolayer MoS2 versus both peak positions and polar angles is plotted. It shows that the strongest E2g (1+) and E2g (1-) peaks appear at different angles, reflected as the alternation of the maxima of the intensity within the frequency range of the E2g (1) mode, which is the consequence of the crystallographic orientation relevant to the strain direction as predicted by theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnets are exceptional platforms for exploring the spin dynamics of antiferromagnetic materials owing to their weak interlayer exchange coupling. In this study, we examined the antiferromagnetic resonance spectra of anisotropic Van der Waals antiferromagnet CrSBr. In addition to the ordinary resonance modes, we observed a dipolar spin wave mode when the microwave field was oriented perpendicular to the in-plane easy axis of CrSBr. Furthermore, our results uncovered a pronounced dependency of various resonant modes on the orientation of the microwave field, which is pivotal for the accurate determination of exchange coupling constants. Numerical simulations have elucidated this orientation dependence of spin dynamics arises from the magnetostatic effect. This discovery underscores the previously underappreciated significance of dipolar interactions in shaping the dynamical properties of two-dimensional AFM materials, thereby enhancing our understanding of the intrinsic dynamic properties of vdW magnets.

Low-Frequency Raman Active Modes of Twisted Bilayer MoS

Abstract:We study the low-frequency Raman active modes of twisted bilayer MoS for several twist angles using a force-field approach and a parametrized bond polarizability model. We show that twist angles near high-symmetry stacking configurations exhibit stacking frustration that leads to significant buckling of the moiré superlattice. We find that atomic relaxation due to the twist is of prime importance. The periodic displacement of the Mo atoms shows the realization of a soliton network, and in turn, leads to the emergence of a number of frequency modes not seen in the high-symmetry stacking systems. Some of the modes are only seen in the Raman polarization setup while others are seen in the setup. The symmetry of the normal modes, and how this affects the Raman tensors is examined in detail.

Abstract:Circularly polarized light carries light spin angular momentum, which may lead helicity-resolved Raman scattering to be sensitive to the electronic spin configuration in magnetic materials. Here, we demonstrate that all Raman modes in the 2D ferromagnet VI3 show different scattering intensities to left and right circularly polarized light at low temperatures, which gives direct evidence of the time-reversal symmetry breaking. By measuring the circular polarization of the dominant Raman mode with respect to the temperature and magnetic field, the ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition and hysteresis behavior can be clearly resolved. Besides the lattice excitations, quasielastic scattering is detected in the paramagnetic phase, and it gradually evolves into the acoustic magnon mode at 18.5 cm–1 in the FM state, which gives the spin wave gap that results from large magnetic anisotropy. Raman scattering and anomalous Stokes anti-Stokes ratio in MoTe2 atomic layers

Abstract:Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering are performed on atomic layers of hexagonal molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2), a prototypical transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductor. The data reveal all six types of zone center optical phonons, along with their corresponding Davydov splittings, which have been challenging to see in other TMDCs. We discover that the anti-Stokes Raman intensity of the low energy layer-breathing mode becomes more intense than the Stokes peak under certain experimental conditions, and find the effect to be tunable by excitation frequency and number of atomic layers. These observations are interpreted as a result of resonance effects arising from the C excitons in the vicinity of the Brillouin zone center in the photon-electron-phonon interaction process.

Abstract:The intrinsic spin-valleys in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides make them promising for exploring new-generation valleytronic and spintronic devices. However, it is very challenging to detect and manipulate a specific valley with off resonance electromagnetic fields at room temperature due to their ultrashort lifetimes and phonon-assisted intervalley scattering. Here, utilizing the sputtering and the focused ion beam milling methods, we fabricate a quasi-three-dimensional chiral microstructure using molybdenum disulfide. Based on chirality and double plasmonic resonances, we realize off resonance wavelength control of valley-polarized photoluminescence at room temperature. Furthermore, we find that the chiral field excitation enhancement (13) and chiral quantum yield amplification (1.35 times) contribute to the huge differences in the photoluminescence of valleys. These results reported here may pave the way for further development of on-chip photonic integration of two-dimensional materials.
An Anomalous Magneto-Optic Effect in Epitaxial Indium Selenide Layers

Abstract:Single-phonon modes offer potential applications in quantum phonon optics, but the phonon density of states of most materials consist of mixed contributions from coupled phonons. Here, using theoretical calculations and magneto-Raman measurements, we report two single-phonon vibration modes originating from the breathing and opposite out-of-plane vibrations of InSe layers. These single-phonon vibrations exhibit an anticorrelated scattering rotations of the polarization axis under an applied vertical magnetic field; such an anomalous magneto-optical behavior is due to the reverse bond polarizations of two quantum atomic vibrations, which induce different symmetry for the corresponding Raman selection rules. A 180° (+90° and -90°) integrated scattering rotation angle of two single-phonon modes was achieved when the magnetic field was swept from 0 to 6 T. This work demonstrates new ways to manipulate the magneto-optic effect through phonon polarity-based symmetry control and opens avenues for exploring single-phonon-vibration-based nanomechanical oscillators and magneto-phonon-coupled physics.

Abstract:Polarized Raman spectra were recorded under parallel and perpendicular configurations in back scattering geometry for a single crystal Cu2MoS4 nanosheet of c-plane (001) faced orientation. The angular dependence of Raman peaks intensity for different phonon modes were studied by rotating from 0 to 180 degree around the c-axis of the ternary layered crystal. In combination with the theoretical calculations, the experimentally observed Raman peaks were assigned to four active Raman modes accordingly.
Ultrahigh-temperature ferromagnetism in MoS 2 Moiré superlattice/graphene hybrid heterostructures

Abstract:Realizing high-temperature ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor nanosheets is significant for their applications in next-generation magnetic and electronic nanodevices. Herein, this goal could be achieved on a MoS 2 Moiré superlattice grown on the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) substrate by a hydrothermal approach. The as-synthesized bilayer MoS 2 superlattice structure with rotating angle ( ϕ = 13° ± 1°) of two hexagonal MoS 2 lattices, possesses outstanding ferromagnetic property and an ultra-high Curie temperature of 990 K. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies combined with density functional theory calculation indicate that the covalent interactions between MoS 2 Moiré superlattice and RGO substrate lead to the formation of interfacial Mo-S-C bonds and complete spin polarization of Mo 4d electrons near the Fermi level. This design could be generalized and may open up a possibility for tailoring the magnetism of other 2D materials.

Abstract:Helicity-resolved Raman spectroscopy (HRRS) can effectively distinguish the Raman modes of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials by phonon symmetry. In this paper, we systematically investigated the phonon helicity selection of basal and edge planes of MoS2 bulk by HRRS. We find that the symmetry of the crystal structure changes the helicity selection of the E1g, E1 2g, and A1g modes in the edge plane. The theoretical calculation results confirm that the E1 2g and A1g modes of the basal plane exhibit a perfect helicity exchange, and the helicity selections of the E1 2g and A1g modes of the edge plane are eliminated or weakened. Our study provides references for phonon helicity selection of 2D layered materials represented by MoS2.
