Abstract:Detailed analysis shows that the famous Iyengar inequality actually says that the Trapezoidal formula is a central algorithm for approximating integrals over an appropriate interval for the class of functions whose derivatives are bounded by a positive number K in L ∞ -sense. The inherent nonlinearity from central algorithms reflects the importance of the Iyengar inequality and thus makes familiar linear methods malfunction when one tries to generalize it. It is shown that the generalization depends on a nonlinear system of equations satisfied by a set of free nodes of a perfect spline. Explicit constructions are obtained in the spirit of the Iyengar inequality for the class of functions whose r th ( r ≤4) derivatives are bounded by a positive number K in L ∞ -sense because a closed solution to the nonlinear system is only available for r ≤4. Connections with computational mathematics, especially with best interpolation and best quadrature, are discussed. Numerical experiments are also included.

Abstract:Numerical integration over the real line for analytic functions is studied. Our main focus is on the sharpness of the error bounds. We first derive two general lower estimates for the worst-case integration error, and then apply these to establish lower bounds for various quadrature rules. These bounds turn out to be either novel or improve upon existing results, leading to lower bounds that closely match upper bounds for various formulas. Specifically, for the suitably truncated trapezoidal rule, we improve upon general lower bounds on the worst-case error obtained by Sugihara [\textit{Numer. Math.}, 75 (1997), pp.~379--395] and provide exceptionally sharp lower bounds apart from a polynomial factor, and in particular show that the worst-case error for the trapezoidal rule by Sugihara is not improvable by more than a polynomial factor. Additionally, our research reveals a discrepancy between the error decay of the trapezoidal rule and Sugihara's lower bound for general numerical integration rules, introducing a new open problem. Moreover, Gauss--Hermite quadrature is proven sub-optimal under the decay conditions on integrands we consider, a result not deducible from upper-bound arguments alone. Furthermore, to establish the near-optimality of the suitably scaled Gauss--Legendre and Clenshaw--Curtis quadratures, we generalize a recent result of Trefethen [\textit{SIAM Rev.}, 64 (2022), pp.~132--150] for the upper error bounds in terms of the decay conditions.

Abstract:In the current study, we compute some upper bounds for the remainder term of Boole's quadrature rule involving convex mappings. First, we build a new identity for first-order differentiable mapping, an auxiliary result to establish our required estimates. We provide several upper bounds by utilizing the identity, convexity property, and bounded property of mappings and some well-known inequalities. Moreover, based on our primary findings, we deliver applications to the means, quadrature rule, special mappings, and non-linear analysis by developing a novel iterative scheme with cubic order of convergence. To the best of our knowledge, the current study is the first attempt to derive upper bounds for Boole's scheme involving convex mappings.

Abstract:First we introduce and analyze a convergent numerical method for a large class of nonlinear nonlocal possibly degenerate convection diffusion equations. Secondly we develop a new Kuznetsov type theory and obtain general and possibly optimal error estimates for our numerical methods - even when the principal derivatives have any fractional order between 1 and 2! The class of equations we consider includes equations with nonlinear and possibly degenerate fractional or general Levy diffusion. Special cases are conservation laws, fractional conservation laws, certain fractional porous medium equations, and new strongly degenerate equations.

High-Order Numerical Integration on Domains Bounded by Intersecting Level Sets

Abstract:We present a high-order method that provides numerical integration on volumes, surfaces, and lines defined implicitly by two smooth intersecting level sets. To approximate the integrals, the method maps quadrature rules defined on hypercubes to the curved domains of the integrals. This enables the numerical integration of a wide range of integrands since integration on hypercubes is a well known problem. The mappings are constructed by treating the isocontours of the level sets as graphs of height functions. Numerical experiments with smooth integrands indicate a high-order of convergence for transformed Gauss quadrature rules on domains defined by polynomial, rational, and trigonometric level sets. We show that the approach we have used can be combined readily with adaptive quadrature methods. Moreover, we apply the approach to numerically integrate on difficult geometries without requiring a low-order fallback method.

Second-order exponential splittings in the presence of unbounded and time-dependent operators: construction and convergence

Abstract:For linear differential equations of the form $u'(t)=[A + B(t)] u(t)$, $t\geq0$, with a possibly unbounded operator $A$, we construct and deduce error bounds for two families of second-order exponential splittings. The role of quadratures when integrating the twice-iterated Duhamel's formula is reformulated: we show that their choice defines the structure of the splitting. Furthermore, the reformulation allows us to consider quadratures based on the Birkhoff interpolation to obtain not only pure-stages splittings but also those containing derivatives of $B(t)$ and commutators of $A$ and $B(t)$. In this approach, the construction and error analysis of the splittings are carried out simultaneously. We discuss the accuracy of the members of the families. Numerical experiments are presented to complement the theoretical consideration.

High-order bounds-satisfying approximation of partial differential equations via finite element variational inequalities

Abstract:Solutions to many important partial differential equations satisfy bounds constraints, but approximations computed by finite element or finite difference methods typically fail to respect the same conditions. Chang and Nakshatrala enforce such bounds in finite element methods through the solution of variational inequalities rather than linear variational problems. Here, we provide a theoretical justification for this method, including higher-order discretizations. We prove an abstract best approximation result for the linear variational inequality and estimates showing that bounds-constrained polynomials provide comparable approximation power to standard spaces. For any unconstrained approximation to a function, there exists a constrained approximation which is comparable in the $W^{1,p}$ norm. In practice, one cannot efficiently represent and manipulate the entire family of bounds-constrained polynomials, but applying bounds constraints to the coefficients of a polynomial in the Bernstein basis guarantees those constraints on the polynomial. Although our theoretical results do not guaruntee high accuracy for this subset of bounds-constrained polynomials, numerical results indicate optimal orders of accuracy for smooth solutions and sharp resolution of features in convection-diffusion problems, all subject to bounds constraints.

Abstract:We study the integration problem on Hilbert spaces of (multivariate) periodic functions. The standard technique to prove lower bounds for the error of quadrature rules uses bump functions and the pigeon hole principle. Recently, several new lower bounds have been obtained using a different technique which exploits the Hilbert space structure and a variant of the Schur product theorem. The purpose of this paper is to (a) survey the new proof technique, (b) show that it is indeed superior to the bump-function technique, and (c) sharpen and extend the results from the previous papers.

Abstract:We establish a fractional extension of the discrete Karamata integration theorem for two types of fractional sum operators. This result, along with other properties of regularly varying sequences and the tools such as comparison theorems and a fixed point theorem in FK-space, is then used to study asymptotic properties of solutions to a nonlinear fractional difference equation. We also establish and utilize a fractional extension of the Stolz–Cesáro theorem, i.e., of the discrete l'Hospital rule. Both, the discrete fractional Karamata theorem and the discrete fractional l'Hospital rule, are believed to find applications in a broader context within the discrete fractional calculus.

Hot and cold bubbles in M87

Abstract:The X-ray data obtained with XMM-Newton is used to investigate the complex structure of the gas in the atmosphere of the Virgo cluster around M87. We construct a simple model for the temperature and density distribution. This model implies that the cumulative mass of the cluster gas is a power-law of its entropy index, $kT n^{-2/3}$, similar to the Hydra cluster. This supports the idea that such power-laws are a direct consequence of gas cooling in a gravitational potential. In the cluster atmosphere hot bubbles of gas injected by the AGN are rising buoyantly. We estimate the age of these structures from the synchrotron radio data and find that this `radiative age' is consistent with the estimated dynamical timescale. However, this requires a spatial separation of the relativistic particles from the magnetic field. The age estimates suggest an activity cycle of the AGN in M87 of roughly $10^8$ years. We show that the largest radio structures are consistent with being the remnants of buoyant bubbles injected by the AGN during an even earlier activity cycle. The wakes behind the currently rising hot bubbles uplift cold gas from the cluster centre. Using a simple model for the trajectory of the cold gas, we demonstrate that the observations by XMM-Newton of a mix of hot and cold gas in the cluster atmosphere in the vicinity of the radio structure can be explained in this scenario. This may also explain the ridges of enhanced X-ray emission from cold gas observed with CHANDRA.

Abstract:We give a modified block-by-block method for the nonlinear fractional order Volterra integral equation system by using quadratic Lagrangian interpolation based on the classical block-by-block method. The core of the method is that we divide its domain into a series of subdomains, that is, block it, and use piecewise quadratic Lagrangian interpolation on each subdomain to approximate $ \mathit{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}(x, y, s, r, u(s, r)) $. Our proposed method has uniform accuracy and its convergence order is $ O(h_x^{4-\alpha}+h_y^{4-\beta}) $. We give a strict proof for the error analysis of the method, and give several numerical examples to verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis.
A second order approach to the Kato square root problem on open sets

Abstract:We give a proof for the Kato square root problem on suitable open sets and subject to pure Dirichlet boundary conditions. In contrast to earlier work, our proof uses only second-order techniques and is in the spirit of the proof given by Egert--Haller--Monniaux--Tolksdorf in the scope of the 27th international internet seminar for $\Omega = \mathbb{R}^n$. In contrast to the usual proofs based on the first-order framework by Axelsson--Keith--McIntosh, the proof becomes substantially shorter and technically less demanding.

Abstract:Evaluation of one-dimensional integrals arises in many problems in physics and technology. This is most often done using simple quadratures of midpoints, trapezoids and Simpson on a uniform grid. For integrals of periodic functions over the full period, the convergence of these quadratures drastically accelerates and depends on the number of grid steps according to an exponential law. In this paper, new asymptotically accurate estimates of the error of such quadratures are obtained. They take into account the location and multiplicity of the poles of the integrand in the complex plane. A generalization of these estimates is constructed for the case when there is no a priori information about the poles of the integrand. An error extrapolation procedure is described that drastically accelerates the convergence of quadratures.

Abstract:We present a modified quadrature method to solve the logarithmic-kernel integral equations, because of its importance in mathematical physics. At first, the quadrature method is constructed by the trapezoidal rule, which is used to discrete the integral equation. In addition, when the integral curve can be represented by a periodic function, the error asymptotic expansion with single parameter will be proved, which shows that the quadrature method has high accuracy order , and can improve the accuracy of numerical solutions to order accuracy by extrapolation algorithm once. Three numerical examples show our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Results on the error bounds of quadrature methods are well known - most state that if the method has degree N, and the integrand has N derivatives, then the error is order N+1. We prove here a converse: that if the integrand fails to have N derivatives, even only at a finite number of points, no method, regardless of its degree, can guarantee convergence more than order N. Even if the integrand fails to have N derivatives at just 3 (for even N, 2) points, no method can produce order more than N+1 convergence. This is done by an adversarial proof: we explicitly construct the functions that exhibit such error; simple splines turn out to suffice.

Abstract:We construct several sequences of asymptotically optimal definite quadrature formulae of fourth order and evaluate their error constants. Besides the asymptotical optimality, an advantage of our quadrature formulae is the explicit form of their weights and nodes. For the remainders of our quadrature formulae monotonicity properties are established when the integrand is a 4-convex function, and a-posteriori error estimates are proven.

Effective Quadratic Error Bounds for Floating-Point Algorithms Computing the Hypotenuse Function

Abstract:We provide tools to help automate the error analysis of algorithms that evaluate simple functions over the floating-point numbers. The aim is to obtain tight relative error bounds for these algorithms, expressed as a function of the unit round-off. Due to the discrete nature of the set of floating-point numbers, the largest errors are often intrinsically "arithmetic" in the sense that their appearance may depend on specific bit patterns in the binary representations of intermediate variables, which may be present only for some precisions. We focus on generic (i.e., parameterized by the precision) and analytic over-estimations that still capture the correlations between the errors made at each step of the algorithms. Using methods from computer algebra, which we adapt to the particular structure of the polynomial systems that encode the errors, we obtain bounds with a linear term in the unit round-off that is sharp in manycases. An explicit quadratic bound is given, rather than the $O()$-estimate that is more common in this area. This is particularly important when using low precision formats, which are increasingly common in modern processors. Using this approach, we compare five algorithms for computing the hypotenuse function, ranging from elementary to quite challenging.
