Abstract:This paper studies the computational complexity on numerical integrals initiated by S. Smale. For a general quadrature functional with k - 1 algebraic precision, the average error of a complexification quadrature formula in the Sobolev space H(k) is obtained. The approach applied in this paper may be also available to other linear approximate problems.

Abstract:Detailed analysis shows that the famous Iyengar inequality actually says that the Trapezoidal formula is a central algorithm for approximating integrals over an appropriate interval for the class of functions whose derivatives are bounded by a positive number K in L ∞ -sense. The inherent nonlinearity from central algorithms reflects the importance of the Iyengar inequality and thus makes familiar linear methods malfunction when one tries to generalize it. It is shown that the generalization depends on a nonlinear system of equations satisfied by a set of free nodes of a perfect spline. Explicit constructions are obtained in the spirit of the Iyengar inequality for the class of functions whose r th ( r ≤4) derivatives are bounded by a positive number K in L ∞ -sense because a closed solution to the nonlinear system is only available for r ≤4. Connections with computational mathematics, especially with best interpolation and best quadrature, are discussed. Numerical experiments are also included.

Abstract:The integration of systems containing Bessel functions is a central point in many practical problems in physics, chemistry and engineering. This paper presents a new numerical analysis for the collocation method presented by Levin for ∫_a^b f(x)S(rx)dx and gives more accurate error analysis about the integration of systems containing Bessel functions. The effectiveness and accuracy of the quadrature is tested for Bessel functions with large arguments.

In this paper, we proposed a multilevel quasi-interpolation scheme by using B-spline basis functions on quartic spline space. Abstract:We present a modified quadrature method to solve the logarithmic-kernel integral equations, because of its importance in mathematical physics. At first, the quadrature method is constructed by the trapezoidal rule, which is used to discrete the integral equation. In addition, when the integral curve can be represented by a periodic function, the error asymptotic expansion with single parameter will be proved, which shows that the quadrature method has high accuracy order , and can improve the accuracy of numerical solutions to order accuracy by extrapolation algorithm once. Three numerical examples show our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In 2D fast multipole method for scattering problems, square quadrature rule is used to discretize the Bessel integral identity for diagonal expansion of 2D Helmholtz kernel, and numerical integration error is introduced. Taking advantage of the relationship between Euler-Maclaurin formula and trapezoidal quadrature rule, and the relationship between trapezoidal and square quadrature rule, sharp computable bound with analytical form on the error of numerical integration of Bessel integral identity by square quadrature rule is derived in this paper. Numerical experiments are presented at the end to demonstrate the accuracy of the sharp computable bound on the numerical integration error.

Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with the numerical evaluation of a class of highly oscillatory integrals containing algebraic singularities. First, we expand such integrals derived by two transformations t=x−β,β>0,t=21+z,−1≤z≤1, into asymptotic series in inverse powers of the frequency ω. Then, based the asymptotic series, two methods are presented. One is the Filon-type method. The other is the Clenshaw–Curtis–Filon-type method which is based on a special Hermite interpolation polynomial in the Clenshaw–Curtis points and can be evaluated efficiently in O(NlogN) operations, where N+1 is the number of Clenshaw–Curtis points in the interval of integration. Some error and convergence analysis and robust numerical examples are used to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed approaches for approximating the class of highly oscillatory singular integrals.

Abstract:Integral inequalities are very useful in finding the error bounds for numerical integration formulas. In this paper, we prove some multiplicative integral inequalities for first-time differentiable s-convex functions. These new inequalities help in finding the error bounds for different numerical integration formulas in multiplicative calculus. The use of s-convex function extends the results for convex functions and covers a large class of functions, which is the main motivation for using s-convexity. To prove the inequalities, we derive two different integral identities for multiplicative differentiable functions in the setting of multiplicative calculus. Then, with the help of these integral identities, we prove some integral inequalities of the Simpson and Ostrowski types for multiplicative generalized convex functions. Moreover, we provide some numerical examples and computational analysis of these newly established inequalities, to show the validity of the results for multiplicative s-convex functions. We also give some applications to quadrature formula and special means of real numbers within the framework of multiplicative calculus.

Abstract:In this paper we explore higher order numerical quadratures for the integration of systems containing Bessel functions. Two families of methods are presented. One is based on a truncation of the asymptotic series and the other is extending an approach in the work of Levin. The decay of the error drastically improves as frequency grows. The effectiveness and accuracy of the quadrature is tested for large arguments of Bessel functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the numerical computation of Hankel transform with weak singularities at the endpoints. By using the analytic continuation, we transform the integral into two line integrals in complex plane, which can be efficiently evaluated by some proper Gauss quadrature rules. The asymptotic orders of the errors on k and ω are derived. These asymptotic orders are demonstrated by several numerical experiments either for fixed k or for fixed ω, which show that the efficiency and accuracy of this method significantly improve as the frequencies increase.
Spherical configurations and quadrature methods for integral equations of the second kind

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and analyze a product integration method for the second-kind integral equation with weakly singular and continuous kernels on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$. We employ quadrature rules that satisfy the Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund property to construct hyperinterpolation for approximating the product of the continuous kernel and the solution, in terms of spherical harmonics. By leveraging this property, we significantly expand the family of candidate quadrature rules and establish a connection between the geometrical information of the quadrature points and the error analysis of the method. We then utilize product integral rules to evaluate the singular integral with the integrand being the product of the singular kernel and each spherical harmonic. We derive a practical $L^{\infty}$ error bound, which consists of two terms: one controlled by the best approximation of the product of the continuous kernel and the solution, and the other characterized by the Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund property and the best approximation polynomial of this product. Numerical examples validate our numerical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to derive some error bounds for Filon-Clenshaw-Curtis quadrature for highly oscillatory integrals. Thanks to the asymptotics of the coefficients in the Chebyshev series expansions of analytic functions or functions of limited regularities, these bounds are established by the aliasings of Fourier transforms on Chebyshev polynomials together with van der Corput-type lemmas. These errors share the property that the errors decrease with the increase of the frequency ω. Moreover, for fixed ω, the order of the error bound related to the number of interpolation nodes N is attainable, while for fixed N, the order of the error on ω is attainable too, which is verified by some functions of limited regularities. In particular, if the functions are analytic in Bernstein ellipses, then the errors decay exponentially. Furthermore, for large values of ω, the accuracy can be further improved by applying a special Hermite interpolants in the Filon-Clenshaw-Curtis quadrature, which can be efficiently evaluated by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) techniques.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 2, Page 974-997, April 2024. Accurate evaluation of nearly singular integrals plays an important role in many boundary integral equation based numerical methods. In this paper, we propose a variant of singularity swapping method to accurately evaluate the layer potentials for arbitrarily close targets. Our method is based on the global trapezoidal rule and trigonometric interpolation, resulting in an explicit quadrature formula. The method achieves spectral accuracy for nearly singular integrals on closed analytic curves. In order to extract the singularity from the complexified distance function, an efficient root finding method is proposed based on contour integration. Through the change of variables, we also extend the quadrature method to integrals on the piecewise analytic curves. Numerical examples for Laplace and Helmholtz equations show that high-order accuracy can be achieved for arbitrarily close field evaluation.

Abstract:Evaluation of one-dimensional integrals arises in many problems in physics and technology. This is most often done using simple quadratures of midpoints, trapezoids and Simpson on a uniform grid. For integrals of periodic functions over the full period, the convergence of these quadratures drastically accelerates and depends on the number of grid steps according to an exponential law. In this paper, new asymptotically accurate estimates of the error of such quadratures are obtained. They take into account the location and multiplicity of the poles of the integrand in the complex plane. A generalization of these estimates is constructed for the case when there is no a priori information about the poles of the integrand. An error extrapolation procedure is described that drastically accelerates the convergence of quadratures.

Abstract:Numerical algorithms for calculating the left- and right-sided Riemann–Liouville fractional integrals and the left- and right-sided fractional derivatives in the Caputo sense using spline interpolation techniques are derived. The spline of the fifth degree (the so-called quintic spline) is mainly taken into account, but the linear and cubic splines are also considered to compare the quality of the developed method and numerical calculations. The estimation of errors for the derived approximation algorithms is presented. Examples of the numerical evaluation of the fractional integrals and derivatives are executed using 128-bit floating-point numbers and arithmetic routines. For each derived algorithm, the experimental orders of convergence are calculated. Also, an illustrative computational example showing the action of the considered fractional operators on the symmetric function in the interval is presented.

Abstract:A new approach is presented for the numerical evaluation of arbitrary singular domain integrals. In this method, singular domain integrals are transformed into a boundary integral and a radial integral which contains singularities by using the radial integration method. The analytical elimination of singularities condensed in the radial integral formulas can be accomplished by expressing the nonsingular part of the integration kernels as a series of cubic B-spline basis functions of the distancerand using the intrinsic features of the radial integral. In the proposed method, singularities involved in the domain integrals are explicitly transformed to the boundary integrals, so no singularities exist at internal points. A few numerical examples are provided to verify the correctness and robustness of the presented method.

Abstract:In this article, we develop multiplicative fractional versions of Simpson's and Newton's formula-type inequalities for differentiable generalized convex functions with the help of established identities. The main motivation for using generalized convex functions lies in their ability to extend results beyond traditional convex functions, encompassing a broader class of functions, and providing optimal approximations for both lower and upper bounds. These inequalities are very useful in finding the error bounds for the numerical integration formulas in multiplicative calculus. Applying these results to the Quadrature formulas demonstrates their practical utility in numerical integration. Furthermore, numerical analysis provides empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the derived findings. It is also demonstrated that the newly proven inequalities extend certain existing results in the literature.
