Abstract:We prove that Palais-Smale sequences for Liouville type functionals on closed surfaces are precompact whenever they satisfy a bound on their Morse index. As a byproduct, we obtain a new proof of existence of solutions for Liouville type mean-field equations in a supercritical regime. Moreover, we also discuss an extension of this result to the case of singular Liouville equations.

Morse Sequences: A simple approach to discrete Morse theory

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the notion of a Morse sequence, which provides an alternative approach to discrete Morse theory, and which is both simple and effective. A Morse sequence on a finite simplicial complex is a sequence composed solely of two elementary operations, that is, expansions (the inverse of a collapse), and fillings (the inverse of a perforation). In a dual manner, a Morse sequence may be obtained by considering only collapses and perforations. Such a sequence is another way to represent the gradient vector field of an arbitrary discrete Morse function. To each Morse sequence, we assign a reference map and an extension map. A reference map associates a set of critical simplexes to each simplex of a given complex, and an extension map associates a set of simplexes to each critical simplex. By considering the boundary of each critical simplex, we obtain a chain complex from these maps, which corresponds precisely to the Morse complex. We show that, when restricted to homology, an extension map is the inverse of a reference map. Also we show that these two maps allow us to recover directly the isomorphism theorem between the homology of an object and the homology of its Morse complex. At last, we introduce the notion of a flow complex, which is based solely on extension maps. We prove that this notion is equivalent to the classical one based on gradient flows.

Abstract:The notion of palindromic length of a finite word, as well as an infinite word, was first introduced by Frid, Puzynina and Zamboni\cite{FRID2013737}. They conjectured that if the palindromic length of an infinite word is bounded, then this sequence is eventually periodic. In this article, we give a formal expression of the palindromic length of Thue-Morse sequence and find all sequences which have the same palindromic length as Thue-Morse's.

C^2-Morse Functions on the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space M_{g,n} bar

Abstract:We construct a series of C^2-Morse functions on the Deligne-Mumford compactification M_{g,n} bar of the moduli space of genus g Riemann/hyperbolic surfaces with n punctures. This series of functions converges to the systole function, which is topologically Morse. We will show that the critical points of our functions approach those of systole sublinearly, stratum-wise, and with the same indices. These functions might be the first explicit examples of C^2-Morse functions on M_{g,n} bar, and the Morse handle decomposition may give rise to the first example of a natural cell decomposition of M_{g,n} bar, that works no matter if n is positive or equal to 0.

Abstract:In the context of discrete Morse theory, we introduce Morse frames, which are maps that associate a set of critical simplexes to all simplexes. The main example of Morse frames are the Morse references. In particular, these Morse references allow computing Morse complexes, an important tool for homology. We highlight the link between Morse references and gradient flows. We also propose a novel presentation of the Annotation algorithm for persistent cohomology, as a variant of a Morse frame. Finally, we propose another construction, that takes advantage of the Morse reference for computing the Betti numbers in mod 2 arithmetic.

Abstract:Some parameter-depending linking theorems are established, which allow to produce a bounded and sign-changing Palais–Smale sequence. For even functionals, a parameter-depending fountain theorem is obtained which provides infinitely many bounded and sign-changing Palais–Smale sequences. A variant mountain pass theorem is built in cones which yields bounded, positive and negative Palais–Smale sequences. The usual Palais–Smale type compactness condition and its variants are completely not necessary for these theories. More exact locations of the critical sequences can be determined. The abstract results are applied to the Schrödinger equation with (or without) critical Sobolev exponents:−Δu+V(x)u=β|u|2*−2u+f(x,u),x∈RN,β⩾0, where 2* is the critical Sobolev exponent. The existence of (multiple) sign-changing solutions is obtained. The positive and negative solutions are also gained as by-products. We will also show that this Schrödinger problem with jumping nonlinearity is independent of the Fučík spectrum.

Abstract:We obtain a complete description of divergent Palais-Smale sequences for the prescribed Ricci curvature functional on compact homogeneous spaces. As an application, we prove the existence of saddle points on generalized Wallach spaces and several types of generalized flag manifolds. We also describe the image of the Ricci map in some of our examples.

Abstract:Let $f:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a Morse-Bott function on a finite dimensional closed smooth manifold $M$. Choosing an appropriate Riemannian metric on $M$ and Morse-Smale functions $f_j:C_j \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ on the critical submanifolds $C_j$, one can construct a Morse chain complex whose boundary operator is defined by counting cascades \cite{FraTheA}. Similar data, which also includes a parameter $\epsilon > 0$ that scales the Morse-Smale functions $f_j$, can be used to define an explicit perturbation of the Morse-Bott function $f$ to a Morse-Smale function $h_\epsilon:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ \cite{AusMor} \cite{BanDyn}. In this paper we show that the Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex of $h_\epsilon$ is the same as the Morse chain complex defined using cascades for any $\epsilon >0$ sufficiently small. That is, the two chain complexes have the same generators, and their boundary operators are the same (up to a choice of sign). Thus, the Morse Homology Theorem implies that the homology of the cascade chain complex of $f:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is isomorphic to the singular homology $H_\ast(M;\mathbb{Z})$.

Abstract:We consider the second order strongly indefinite differential system with superlinearities. By using the approximation method of finite element, we show that bounds on solutions of the restriction functional onto finite dimensional subspace are equivalent to bounds on their relative Morse indices. The obtained results can be used to establish a Morse theory for strongly indefinite functionals with superlinearities.

Abstract:We define the geometric complex associated to a Morse-Bott-Smale vector field, cf. [Austin-Braam, 1995], and its associated spectral sequence. We prove an extension of the Bismut-Zhang theorem to Morse-Bott-Smale functions. The proof is based on the Bismut-Zhang theorem for Morse-Smale functions, see [Bismut-Zhang, 1992].

Abstract:Area and orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the standard 2-disc, referred to as symplectomorphisms of $\mathbb{D}^{2}$, allow decompositions in terms of positive twist diffeomorphisms. Using the latter decomposition we utilize the Conley index theory of discrete braid classes as introduced in [Ghrist et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math., 331(11), 2000, Invent. Math., 152(2), 2003] in order to obtain a Morse type forcing theory of periodic points: a priori information about periodic points determines a mapping class which may force additional periodic points.

Abstract:To every Gromov hyperbolic space X one can associate a space at infinity called the Gromov boundary of X. Gromov showed that quasi-isometries of hyperbolic metric spaces induce homeomorphisms on their boundaries, thus giving rise to a well-defined notion of the boundary of a hyperbolic group. Croke and Kleiner showed that the visual boundary of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) groups is not well-defined, since quasi-isometric CAT(0) spaces can have non-homeomorphic boundaries. For any sublinear function $\kappa$, we consider a subset of the visual boundary called the $\kappa$-Morse boundary and show that it is QI-invariant and metrizable. This is to say, the $\kappa$-Morse boundary of a CAT(0) group is well-defined. In the case of Right-angled Artin groups, it is shown in the Appendix that the Poisson boundary of random walks is naturally identified with the $\sqrt{t \log t}$--boundary.

Abstract:A given self-map $f\colon M\to M$ of a compact manifold determines the sequence $\{L(f^n)\}_{n=1}^\infty$, of the Lefschetz numbers of its iterations. We consider its dual sequence $\{a_n(f)\}_{n=1}^\infty$ given by the Möbius inversion formula. The set ${\mathcal AP}(f)=\{ n\in \mathbb N\ \colon\ a_n(f)\neq 0\}$ is called the set of algebraic periods. We solve an open problem existing in literature by showing that for every finite subset ${\mathcal A}$ of natural numbers there exist an orientable surface $S_{\rm g}$, as well as a non-orientable surface $N_{\rm g}$, of genus ${\rm g}$, and a Morse$\unicode{x2013}$Smale diffeomorphism $f$ of this surface such that $\mathcal{AP}(f)=\mathcal{A}$. For such a map it implies the existence of points of a minimal period $n$ for each odd $n \in \mathcal{A}$. For the orientation-reversing Morse$\unicode{x2013}$Smale diffeomorphisms of $S_{\rm g}$ we identify strong restrictions on ${\mathcal AP}(f)$. Our method also provides an estimate of the number of homotopy classes of Morse$\unicode{x2013}$Smale diffeomorphisms, which is exponential in ${\rm g}$.

Abstract:We provide an explicit combinatorial realization of all simple and injective (hence, and projective) modules in the category of bounded $\mathfrak{sp}(2n)$-modules. This realization is defined via a natural tableaux correspondence between spinor-type modules of $\mathfrak{so}(2n)$ and oscillator-type modules of $\mathfrak{sp}(2n)$. In particular, we show that, in contrast with the $A$-type case, the generic and bounded $\mathfrak{sp}(2n)$-modules admit an analog of the Gelfand-Graev continuation from finite-dimensional representations.

Abstract:We establish Morse inequalities for a noncompact manifold with a cocompact and properly discontinuous action of a discrete group, where Morse functions are not necessarily invariant under the group action.
