Abstract:We give global structure of spectra of periodic non-Hermitian Jacobi operators by the discriminant and its stationary points. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for real spectra and single interval spectra.

Abstract:When analytic quasi-periodic cocycles are defined on a high dimension torus, their Lyapunov exponents have perturbative positivity and continuity. In this article, we study a class of analytic quasi-periodic Jacobi cocycles defined on a two dimension torus. We show that in the non-perturbative large coupling regimes, the Lyapunov exponent is positive for any frequency and weak Holder continuous for the full-measured frequency.

Abstract:We give a precise and complete description on the spectrum for a class of non-self-adjoint quasi-periodic operators acting on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ which contains the Sarnak's model as a special case. As a consequence, one can see various interesting spectral phenomena including $\mathscr{P}\mathscr{T}$ symmetric breaking, the non-simply-connected two-dimensional spectrum in this class of operators. Particularly, we provide new examples of non-self-adjoint operator in $\mathscr{l}^{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ whose spectra (actually a two-dimensional subset of $\mathbb{C}$) can not be approximated by the spectra of its finite-interval truncations.

Thin Spectra and Singular Continuous Spectral Measures for Limit-Periodic Jacobi Matrices

Abstract:This paper investigates the spectral properties of Jacobi matrices with limit-periodic coefficients. We show that for a residual set of such matrices, the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure, and the spectral measures are purely singular continuous. For a dense set of limit-periodic Jacobi matrices we can strengthen the result and show that the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero lower box counting dimension, and hence in particular of zero Hausdorff dimension, while still retaining the singular continuity of the spectral type. We also show how results of this nature can be established by fixing the off-diagonal coefficients and varying only the diagonal coefficients, and, in a more restricted version, by fixing the diagonal coefficients to be zero and varying only the off-diagonal coefficients. We apply these results to produce examples of weighted Laplacians on the multidimensional integer lattice having purely singular continuous spectral type and zero-dimensional spectrum.

Abstract:We perform the spectral analysis of a family of Jacobi operators $J(\alpha)$ depending on a complex parameter $\alpha$. If $|\alpha|\neq1$ the spectrum of $J(\alpha)$ is discrete and formulas for eigenvalues and eigenvectors are established in terms of elliptic integrals and Jacobian elliptic functions. If $|\alpha|=1$, $\alpha \neq \pm 1$, the essential spectrum of $J(\alpha)$ covers the entire complex plane. In addition, a formula for the Weyl $m$-function as well as the asymptotic expansions of solutions of the difference equation corresponding to $J(\alpha)$ are obtained. Finally, the completeness of eigenvectors and Rodriguez-like formulas for orthogonal polynomials, studied previously by Carlitz, are proved.

Exploring Halo Substructure with Giant Stars. VI. Extended Distributions of Giant Stars Around the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy -- How Reliable Are They?

Abstract:The question of the existence of active tidal disruption around various dSph galaxies remains controversial. That debate often centers on the nature (bound vs. unbound) of extended populations of stars. However, the more fundamental issue of the very existence of the extended populations is still contentious. We present an evaluation of the debate centering on one particular dSph, Carina, for which claims both for and against the existence of stars beyond the King radius have been made. Our review includes an examination of all previous studies bearing on the Carina radial profile and shows that the survey method which achieves the highest detected dSph signal-to-background in the outer parts of the galaxy is the Washington M, T2 + DDO51 (MTD) filter approach from Paper II in this series. We then address statistical methods used to evaluate the reliability of MTD surveys in the presence of photometric errors and for which a new, a posteriori statistical analysis methodology is provided. Finally, these statistical methods are tested by new spectroscopy of stars in the MTD-selected Carina candidate sample. Of 74 candidate giants with follow-up spectroscopy, the MTD technique identified 61 new Carina members, including 8 stars outside the King radius. From a sample of 29 stars not initially identified as candidate Carina giants but that lie just outside of our selection criteria, 12 have radial velocities consistent with membership, including 5 extratidal stars. Carina is shown to have an extended population of giant stars extending to a major axis radius of 40' (1.44x the nominal King radius).

Abstract:Electronic properties of a general class of one-dimensional two-tile systems are calculated exactly. The systems containing periodic crystals, generalized Fibonacci quasicrystals, generalized Thue-Morse aperiodic lattices and even other two-tile aperiodic lattices, can be divided into two different families which are constructed by the inflation rules: {A, B}→{Am11Bm12,Am21Bm22} and {A, B}→{An11Bn12,Bn21An22}, respectively. As typical examples, global spectra of bands and density of states in some two-tile aperiodic systems are numerically calculated. Some interesting properties are obtained.

Non-Hermitian butterfly spectra in a family of quasiperiodic lattices

Abstract:We propose a family of exactly solvable quasiperiodic lattice models with analytical complex mobility edges, which can incorporate mosaic modulations as a straightforward generalization. By sweeping a potential tuning parameter $\delta$, we demonstrate a kind of interesting butterfly-like spectra in complex energy plane, which depicts energy-dependent extended-localized transitions sharing a common exact non-Hermitian mobility edge. Applying Avila's global theory, we are able to analytically calculate the Lyapunov exponents and determine the mobility edges exactly. For the minimal model without mosaic modulation, a compactly analytic formula for the complex mobility edges is obtained, which, together with analytical estimation of the range of complex energy spectrum, gives the true mobility edge. The non-Hermitian mobility edge in complex energy plane is further verified by numerical calculations of fractal dimension and spatial distribution of wave functions. Tuning parameters of non-Hermitian potentials, we also investigate the variations of the non-Hermitian mobility edges and the corresponding butterfly spectra, which exhibit richness of spectrum structures.

Band spectrum singularities for Schrödinger operators

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a systematic framework to study the dispersion surfaces of Schrödinger operators $ -\Delta + V$, where the potential $V \in C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{R})$ is periodic with respect to a lattice $\Lambda \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and respects the symmetries of $\Lambda$. Our analysis relies on an abstract result, that expands on a seminal work of Fefferman--Weinstein \cite{feffer12}: if an operator depends analytically on a parameter, then so do its eigenvalues and eigenprojectors away from a discrete set. As an application, we describe the generic structure of some singularities in the band spectrum of Schrödinger operators invariant under the three-dimensional simple, body-centered and face-centered cubic lattices.

Abstract:This paper mainly deals with the Sturm-Liouville operator \begin{equation*} \mathbf{H}=\frac{1}{w(x)}\left( -\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}p(x)\frac{ \mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}+q(x)\right) ,\text{ }x\in \Gamma \end{equation*} acting in $L_{w}^{2}\left( \Gamma \right) ,$ where $\Gamma $ is a metric graph. We establish a relationship between the bottom of the spectrum and the positive solutions of quantum graphs, which is a generalization of the classical Allegretto-Piepenbrink theorem. Moreover, we prove the Persson-type theorem, which characterizes the infimum of the essential spectrum.

Abstract:In general, point spectrum of an almost periodic Jacobi matrix can depend on the element of the hull. In this paper, we study the hull of the limit-periodic Jacobi matrix corresponding to the equilibrium measure of the Julia set of the polynomial $z^2-\lambda$ with large enough $\lambda$; this is the leading model in inverse spectral theory of ergodic operators with zero measure spectrum. We prove that every element of the hull has empty point spectrum.

Abstract:We survey results concerning the spectral properties of limit-periodic operators. The main focus is on discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators, but other classes of operators, such as Jacobi and CMV matrices, continuum Schrödinger operators and multi-dimensional Schrödinger operators, are discussed as well. We explain that each basic spectral type occurs, and it does so for a dense set of limit-periodic potentials. The spectrum has a strong tendency to be a Cantor set, but there are also cases where the spectrum has no gaps at all. The possible regularity properties of the integrated density of states range from extremely irregular to extremely regular. Additionally, we present background about periodic Schrödinger operators and almost-periodic sequences. In many cases we outline the proofs of the results we present.

Abstract:We consider non-self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces of the form $H=H_0+CWC$, where $H_0$ is self-adjoint, $W$ is bounded and $C$ is a metric operator, $C$ bounded and relatively compact with respect to $H_0$. We suppose that $C(H_0-z)^{-1}C$ is uniformly bounded in $z\in\mathbb{C}\setminus\mathbb{R}$. We define the spectral singularities of $H$ as the points of the essential spectrum $\lambda\in\sigma_{\mathrm{ess}}(H)$ such that $C(H\pm i\varepsilon)^{-1}CW$ does not have a limit as $\varepsilon\to0^+$. We prove that the spectral singularities of $H$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the eigenvalues, associated to resonant states, of an extension of $H$ to a larger Hilbert space. Next, we show that the asymptotically disappearing states for $H$, i.e. the set of vectors $\varphi$ such that $e^{\pm itH}\varphi\to0$ as $t\to\infty$, coincide with the generalized eigenstates of $H$ corresponding to eigenvalues $\lambda\in\mathbb{C}$, $\mp\mathrm{Im}(\lambda)>0$. Finally, we define the absolutely continuous spectral subspace of $H$ and show that it satisfies $\mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{ac}}(H)=\mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{p}}(H^*)^\perp$, where $\mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{p}}(H^*)$ stands for the point spectrum of $H^*$. We thus obtain a direct sum decomposition of the Hilbert spaces in terms of spectral subspaces of $H$. One of the main ingredients of our proofs is a spectral resolution formula for a bounded operator $r(H)$ regularizing the identity at spectral singularities. Our results apply to Schrödinger operators with complex potentials.
