Abstract:In recent years, electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) combined with ozonation have been widely utilized in water/wastewater treatment due to their excellent synergistic effect, high treatment efficiency, and low energy consumption. A comprehensive summary of these ozone-based EAOPs is still insufficient, though some reviews have covered these topics but either focused on a specific integrated process or provided synopses of EAOPs or ozone-based AOPs. This review presents an overview of the fundamentals of several ozone-based EAOPs, focusing on process optimization, electrode selection, and typical reactor designs. Additionally, the service life of electrodes and improvement strategies for the stability of ozone-based EAOPs that are ignored by previous reviews are discussed. Furthermore, four main application fields are summarized, including disinfection, emerging contaminants treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, and resource recovery. Finally, the summary and perspective on ozone-based EAOPs are proposed. This review provides an overall summary that would help to gain insight into the ozone-based EAOPs to improve their environmental applications.

Abstract:Traditional physicochemical and biological techniques, as well as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), are often inadequate, ineffective, or expensive for industrial water reclamation. Within this context, the electrochemical technologies have found a niche where they can become dominant in the near future, especially for the abatement of biorefractory substances. In this critical review, some of the most promising electrochemical tools for the treatment of wastewater contaminated by organic pollutants are discussed in detail with the following goals: (1) to present the fundamental aspects of the selected processes; (2) to discuss the effect of both the main operating parameters and the reactor design on their performance; (3) to critically evaluate their advantages and disadvantages; and (4) to forecast the prospect of their utilization on an applicable scale by identifying the key points to be further investigated. The review is focused on the direct electrochemical oxidation, the indirect electrochemical oxidation mediated by electrogenerated active chlorine, and the coupling between anodic and cathodic processes. The last part of the review is devoted to the critical assessment of the reactors that can be used to put these technologies into practice.

Abstract:Updated water directives and ambitious targets like the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have emerged in the last decade to tackle water scarcity and contamination. Although numerous strategies have been developed to remove water pollutants, it is still necessary to enhance their effectiveness against toxic and biorefractory organic molecules. Comprehensive reviews have highlighted the appealing features of the electrochemical technologies, but much progress has been made in recent years. In this timely review, a critical discussion on latest innovations and perspectives of the most promising electrochemical tools for wastewater treatment is presented. The work describes the performance of electrocatalytic anodes for direct electrochemical oxidation, the oxidation mediated by electrogenerated active chlorine, the electrocatalytic reduction as well as coupled approaches for synchronous anodic and cathodic processes combined with homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. The last section is devoted to the assessment of scale-up issues and the increase in the technology readiness level.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as fenton, ozonation, sonolysis, photocatalysis, UV photolysis, and wet air oxidation are one amongst the most suitable techniques for water and wastewater treatment. These, AOPs have also been chosen for the complete degradation of various categories of emerging pollutants that could not be managed by any conventional technologies. The mineralization is achieved by chemical reactions between the various reacting species generated and the pollutants. The present article provides a vivid view of the mechanistic features of various AOPs and its possible synergisation for process enhancement to achieve better treatment efficiency.

Abstract:This review addresses recent developments and challenges about electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) to favor market prospecting for EAO technology. The presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) in the environment (wastewater, groundwater, surface water, tap water etc.), especially the pharmaceutical compounds, has been highlighted as a worldwide environmental problem, mainly due to their difficult elimination by conventional wastewater and water treatment processes. Aiming to solve the lower removal of a wide spectrum of CEC by conventional processes, the development of (EAOPs) has grown in recent decades, mainly because they are considered compact, scalable and automatable, and chemical-free. However, most studies were carried out using single contaminant in lab-scale which does not represent the reality of treatment systems. In this scenario, the treatment of complex matrices, multi-contaminants, lower contaminant concentration, energy consumption, fouling, and scaling still remain serious obstacles and challenges in the wider spread of the EAOPs. Therefore, considerable research and development efforts should include a deeper discussion on the treatment of complex water matrices, reactor design, hybrid processes, and what is necessary for enhanced process performance and to the scale up.

Abstract:UV-advanced reduction processes (UV-ARP) are an advanced water treatment technology characterized by the reductive transformation of chemical contaminants. Contaminant abatement in UV-ARP is most often accomplished through reaction with hydrated electrons (eaq -) produced from UV photolysis of chemical sensitizers (e.g., sulfite). In this Review, we evaluate the photochemical kinetics, substrate scope, and optimization of UV-ARP. We find that quantities typically reported in photochemical studies of natural and engineered systems are under-reported in the UV-ARP literature, especially the formation rates, scavenging capacities, and concentrations of key reactive species like eaq -. The absence of these quantities has made it difficult to fully evaluate the impact of operating conditions and the role of water matrix components on the efficiencies of UV-ARP. The UV-ARP substrate scope is weighted heavily toward contaminant classes that are resistant to degradation by advanced oxidation processes, like oxyanions and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Some studies have sought to optimize the UV-ARP treatment of these contaminants; however, a thorough evaluation of the impact of water matrix components like dissolved organic matter on these optimization strategies is needed. Overall, the data compilation, analysis, and research recommendations provided in this Review will assist the UV-ARP research community in future efforts toward optimizing UV-ARP systems, modeling the eaq --based chemical transformation kinetics, and developing new UV-ARP systems.

Abstract:This review explores the potential and challenges of combining electrochemical, especially electrocoagulation (EC) process, with various - wastewater treatment methods such as membranes, chemical treatments, biological methods, and oxidation processes to enhance pollutant removal and reduce costs. It emphasizes the advantages of using electrochemical processes as a pretreatment step, including increased volume and improved quality of permeate water, mitigation of membrane fouling, and lower environmental impact. Pilot-scale studies are discussed to validate the effectiveness of combined EC processes, particularly for industrial wastewater. Factors such as electrode materials, coating materials, and the integration of a third process are discussed as potential avenues for improving the environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the combined EC processes. This review also discusses factors for improvement and explores the EC process combined with Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP). The conclusion highlights the need for combined EC processes, which include reducing electrode consumption, evaluating energy efficiency, and conducting pilot-scale investigations under continuous flow conditions. Furthermore, it emphasizes future research on electrode materials and technology commercialization. Overall, this review underscores the importance of combined EC processes in meeting the demand for clean water resources and emphasizes the need for further optimization and implementation in industrial applications.

Abstract:This communication reviews recent advances in the design of electrochemical flow reactors used in water treatment by EAOPs. The performance of different reactor configurations, such as the press-filter type, parallel plates open to the atmosphere, RCEs, and three-dimensional electrode cells, are analyzed with examples during the degradation or mineralization of POPs. The EAOPs reviewed here are the AO, EF, (PEF), active chlorine-based PEF-like, and E-peroxone. Moreover, the excellent performance of hybrid processes coupling EAOPs with adsorption, electrocoagulation, and biotechnological processes are rigorously examined. This review also analyzes successful cases of industrial EAOPs and hybrid processes using pilot-scale electrochemical reactors, emphasizing the importance of employing flow reactors on a lab scale before the pilot scale. Some recommendations for characterizing the reaction environment regarding non-ideal electrolyte flow dispersion, mass transport, and current distribution in the laboratory or pre-pilot scale reactors are exemplified with experimental data and CFD simulations from many worldwide research groups. Finally, the challenges in designing electrochemical flow reactors for EAOPs are presented.

Abstract:High oxidation potential as well as other advantages over other tertiary wastewater treatments have led in recent years to a focus on the development of advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOPs). These radicals can be generated from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and persulfate (PS) through various activation methods such as catalytic, radiation or thermal activation. This review manuscript aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the different methods for PS and PMS activaton, as well as the different applications of this technology in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Although its most widespread application is the elimination of micropollutants, its use for the disinfection of wastewater is gaining increasing interest. In addition, the possibility of combining this technology with ultrafiltration membranes to improve the water quality and lifespan of the membranes has also been discussed. Finally, a brief economic analysis of this technology has been undertaken and the different attempts made to implement it at full-scale have been summarized. As a result, this review tries to be useful for all those people working in that area.

Abstract:With the development of industrial society, organic wastewater produced by industrial manufacturing has caused many environmental problems. The vast majority of organic pollutants in water bodies are persistent in the environment, posing a threat to human and animal health. Therefore, efficient treatment methods for highly concentrated organic wastewater are urgently needed. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely noticed in the area of treating organic wastewater. Compared with other chemical methods, AOPs have the characteristics of high oxidation efficiency and no secondary pollution. In this paper, the mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of AOPs are comprehensively reviewed. Besides, the basic principles of combining different AOPs to enhance the treatment efficiency are described. Furthermore, the applications of AOPs in various wastewater treatments, such as oily wastewater, dyeing wastewater, pharmaceutical wastewater, and landfill leachate, are also presented. Finally, we conclude that the main direction in the future of AOPs are the modification of catalysts and the optimization of operating parameters, with the challenges focusing on industrial applications.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) constitute important, promising, efficient, and environmental-friendly methods developed to principally remove persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from waters and wastewaters. Generally, AOPs are based on the in situ generation of a powerful oxidizing agent, such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH), obtained at a sufficient concentration to effectively decontaminate waters. This critical review presents a precise and overall description of the recent literature (period 1990–2012) concerning the main types of AOPs, based on chemical, photochemical, sonochemical, and electrochemical reactions. The principles, performances, advantages, drawbacks, and applications of these AOPs to the degradation and destruction of POPs in aquatic media and to the treatment of waters and waste waters have been reported and compared.

Abstract:Emerging contaminants’ presence in water, wastewater, and aquatic environments has been widely reported. Their environmental and health-related effects, and the increasing tendency towards wastewater reuse require technology that could remove to a greater degree, or even mineralize, all these contaminants. Currently, the most commonly used process technologies for their removal are advanced oxidation processes (AOPs); however, recent advances have highlighted other advanced treatment processes (ATPs) as possible alternatives, such as advanced reduction processes (ARPs) and advanced oxidation-reduction processes (AORPs). Although they are not yet widely diffused, they may remove contaminants that are not readily treatable by AOPs, or offer better performance than the former. This paper presents an overview of some of the most common or promising ATPs for the removal of contaminants from water and wastewater, and their application, with discussion of their limitations and merits. Issues about technologies’ costs and future perspectives in the water sector are discussed.

Abstract:Electrochemical technologies are capable of keeping environmental interfacial processes at high rate and efficiency through directionally and accurately controlling the electron transfer.It is becoming a new strategy in dealing with water pollution and water scarcity for its extraordinary features and superiorities.In the past ten years,electrochemical technologies for water treatment have achieved great progress,which is heading for efficient electrodes,coupling technical processes,low-carbon operations.To thoroughly study the mechanism of electrochemical water treatment technologies,and further discuss the application of electrochemical technologies,attention has been focused on designing of electrode materials,exploiting of high-performance reactors,combination of technical processes,and recovery of resources and energy in wastewater.This article reviews the research progresses of electro-coagulation,electro-oxidation,electro-reduction,electro-(re)dialysis and electro-adsorption.In the end,this article puts forward a conclusion on technology development of electrochemical water treatment so as to get an outlook in this field.

Abstract:In response to the increasing global water demand and the pressing environmental challenges posed by climate change, the development of advanced wastewater treatment processes has become essential. This study introduces novel electrochemical technologies and examines the scalability of industrial-scale electrooxidation (EO) methods for wastewater treatment, focusing on simplifying processes and reducing operational costs. Focusing on the effective removal of key nutrients, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus, from wastewater, this review highlights recent advancements in electrode materials and innovative designs, such as high-performance metal oxides and carbon-based electrodes, that enhance efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, a comprehensive discussion covers a range of electrochemical methods, including electrocoagulation and electrooxidation, each evaluated for their effectiveness in nutrient removal. Unlike previous studies, this review not only examines nutrient removal efficiency, but also assesses the industrial applicability of these technologies through case studies, demonstrating their potential in municipal and industrial wastewater contexts. By advancing durable and cost-effective electrode materials, this study emphasizes the potential of electrochemical wastewater treatment technologies to address global water quality issues and promote environmental sustainability. Future research directions are identified with a focus on overcoming current limitations, such as high operational costs and electrode degradation, and positioning electrochemical treatment as a promising solution for sustainable water resource management on a larger scale.

Abstract:Global water demand and environmental concerns related to climate change require industries to develop high-efficiency wastewater treatment methods to remove pollutants. Likewise, toxic pollutants present in wastewater negatively affect the environment and human health, requiring effective treatment. Although conventional treatment processes remove carbon and nutrients, they are insufficient to remove pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and plasticizers. Electrochemical processes effectively remove pollutants from wastewater through the mineralization of non-biodegradable pollutants with consequent conversion into biodegradable compounds. Its advantages include easy operation, versatility, and short reaction time. In this way, this review initially provides a global water scenario with a view to the future. It comprises global demand, treatment methods, and pollution of water resources, addressing various contaminants such as heavy metals, nutrients, organic compounds, and emerging contaminants. Subsequently, the fundamentals of electrochemical treatments are presented as well as electrochemical treatments, highlighting the latest studies involving electrocoagulation, electroflocculation, electroflotation, capacitive deionization and its derivatives, eletrodeionization, and electrochemical advanced oxidation process. Finally, the challenges and perspectives were discussed. In this context, electrochemical processes have proven promising and effective for the treatment of water and wastewater, allowing safe reuse practices and purification with high contaminant removal.

Abstract:This review proposes an insight into the prospects of electrochemistry for the treatment of highly concentrated effluents in three sections. The first section of this review presents an overview of electrochemical water treatment strategies adapted to these very specific waste streams, including the influence of operating conditions, electrode materials and processes (with special emphasis on anodic oxidation, electro-Fenton and electrocoagulation). The second part provides the engineering parameters to ensure successful upscaling of electrochemical processes in terms of modeling mass transport, charge transfer and hydrodynamics, reactor designs and energy requirements. This section also addresses process combinations, where electrochemistry could complement traditional methods of treatment, in order to improve the overall efficiency of the integrated system. Finally, the last section focuses on the nature, characteristics and challenges inherent to highly concentrated wastewater, divided into five categories: industrial wastewater (e.g., pharmaceutical, electronics, chemical, food-processing), hypersaline effluents (e.g., reverse osmosis concentrates), solutions contaminated with a mixture of organic and inorganic contaminants (e.g., leachate, mining), highly viscous solution (or non-Newtonian liquid) (e.g., sludge) and solutions of high chemical oxygen demand load but with low pollutant content (e.g., from soil washing).

Abstract:Electrochemical water treatment is one of the key topics of environmental electrochemistry. Identifying electrocatalytic materials capable of electrogenerating high oxidant species in situ seems to have catalyzed researchers’ interest in these processes. While most studies have focused on ideal lab-made solutions, translation to higher technology readiness levels and commercialization requires reframing research questions in context of real water matrices. In this current opinion, we discuss disconnects that may occur when focusing on synthetic solutions treatment rather than real waters. Future research can fill the gaps identified herein, thus facilitating application of electrochemical water treatment technologies. Abstract:Contamination of water by toxic and/or recalcitrant species has great environmental impacts. In this context, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) - technologies that principally use the hydroxyl radical (HO●) for oxidation - have emerged as promising alternatives in treating urban and industrial wastewaters. This study reviewed the literature on POAs and presented data regarding the efficiency of these processes in pollutant degradation, comparing the theoretical reasoning and its industrial applications. The fundamentals and major applications of AOPs (chemical, photochemical, electrochemical, sonochemical and ozone-based processes), as well as their advantages and disadvantages, are described in this review. AOPs have been considered an effective alternative from a technical, economic and environmental viewpoint for the degradation of pollutants in effluents and industrial wastewater, despite having limitations such as high cost of available energy sources, development of new low-cost catalytic materials and construction of full-scale reactors. It is greatly important to the industrial application of AOPs to optimize the effectiveness of these factors.

Abstract:Water pollution by recalcitrant organic contaminants is a recognized issue of significant concern since a wide range of these contaminants has been found in environmental matrices resulting in severe environmental and health issues. The role of wastewater treatment technologies is becoming more critical with the growing presence of these recalcitrant organic compounds in water. The removal of these compounds from environmental matrices has proved a difficult challenge for the scientific and technical community, as no single process is available for their degradation and mineralization. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) possess a great ability to treat a wide variety of these pollutants and to improve the biodegradability of wastewater. Still, they have some important drawbacks like high operational costs resulting from the consumption of energy and chemicals. In this framework, technological advancement, including the integration of AOPs with biological treatment, may help in reducing the pollutant concentration to the desired level, ensuring the better quality of water. This review addresses the combination of AOPs and biological processes used for the degradation of organic pollutants present in waters and wastewaters. Recent works on the combination of AOP and biological processes are summarized and discussed, including scientific, technical and economic aspects. Abstract:Over the past decades, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for wastewater treatment drawn a great deal of attention of the researchers. AOP’s are one of the promising advanced technologies to destroy the total organic content, toxic pollutants etc. from the wastewater. A number of attempts has been made from the past two decades on the waste water treatment using various advanced oxidation treatment techniques. The main objective of this review article is to provide the quick reference for researchers and academicians in the area of wastewater treatment using nanomaterials in conjunction with various AOPs and/or hybrid AOPs. This review article is mainly focused on (1) the nanomaterials-based individual and hybrid AOPs for treatment of various industrial effluents or model effluents, (2) the current status of work in the area of hybrid nanomaterials as heterogeneous catalysts combined with AOPs and hybrid advanced oxidation processes.
