Abstract:High oxidation potential as well as other advantages over other tertiary wastewater treatments have led in recent years to a focus on the development of advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOPs). These radicals can be generated from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and persulfate (PS) through various activation methods such as catalytic, radiation or thermal activation. This review manuscript aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the different methods for PS and PMS activaton, as well as the different applications of this technology in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Although its most widespread application is the elimination of micropollutants, its use for the disinfection of wastewater is gaining increasing interest. In addition, the possibility of combining this technology with ultrafiltration membranes to improve the water quality and lifespan of the membranes has also been discussed. Finally, a brief economic analysis of this technology has been undertaken and the different attempts made to implement it at full-scale have been summarized. As a result, this review tries to be useful for all those people working in that area.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are several key challenges in water and wastewater treatment, specifically including: 1. **Removal of refractory micropollutants**: With the increase in human activities and the progress of detection technologies, the presence of emerging pollutants (EPs) in water has become a global issue. These pollutants are usually detected in the secondary treatment effluent of sewage treatment plants, and the current treatment processes cannot effectively remove them. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop technologies that can effectively remove these refractory compounds. 2. **Improve disinfection effectiveness and reduce harmful by - products**: Although the traditional chlorination disinfection method is widely used, it will produce potentially dangerous disinfection by - products (DBPs), such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). These by - products have potential harm to the environment and human health. Therefore, it is necessary to find safer and more efficient alternative disinfection methods. 3. **Expand the application range of advanced oxidation processes**: Advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR - AOPs) have received extensive attention in recent years due to their high oxidation potential and other advantages. The paper aims to evaluate the effects of different activation methods (such as catalytic, radiation or thermal activation) on the generation of sulfate radicals from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and persulfate (PS), and explore their application potential in water and wastewater treatment, especially in the removal of micropollutants and disinfection. 4. **Combine ultrafiltration membrane technology to improve water quality and membrane life**: The study also discusses the possibility of combining SR - AOPs with ultrafiltration membrane technology to further improve water quality and extend the service life of the membrane. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to provide the latest progress and technical evaluation of advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR - AOPs), especially their applications in water and wastewater treatment, so as to provide valuable reference information for researchers and practitioners in related fields. ### Key formulas - Reaction for the generation of sulfate radicals: \[ S_2O_8^{2-}+hv\rightarrow 2SO_4^{\cdot -} \] \[ HSO_5^-+hv\rightarrow SO_4^{\cdot -}+OH^{\cdot} \] - Photolysis reaction of water molecules: \[ H_2O + hv\rightarrow H^{\cdot}+OH^{\cdot} \] \[ S_2O_8^{2-}+H^{\cdot}\rightarrow SO_4^{\cdot -}+SO_4^{2-}+H^+ \] \[ HSO_5^-+H^{\cdot}\rightarrow SO_4^{\cdot -}+H_2O \] These formulas describe the possible chemical reaction paths that may occur during the radiation activation process.
