Abstract:Accelerating the sluggish anode reaction in a Zn–air battery can improve its energy efficiency, but the large-scale development of this battery is hindered by the lack of bifunctional catalysts. Herein, we designed a one-step carbonization strategy for synthesizing monodispersed Co nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon nanotube (Co/CNT), which shows excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance with long-term durability for oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction. The formation of carbon substrates from the carbonization of nitrogenous organic molecules are benefit to capture more Co nanoparticles though strong metal–substrate interaction, then construct high-density effective active sites of the Lewis base for accelerating the electrocatalytic reaction process. To verify its superior performance, a rechargeable Zn–air battery with a Co/CNT air electrode was subsequently constructed. The battery exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.41 V and a specific discharge capacity of 835.2 mAh/gZn, which can be continuously charged and discharged with good cycle stability. Our study provides a new strategy for developing various practical carbon-based non-noble metallic bifunctional electrocatalysts with promising performance in electrocatalysis and batteries to achieve the target of carbon neutrality.
Novel MOF-Derived Co@N-C Bifunctional Catalysts for Highly Efficient Zn-Air Batteries and Water Splitting.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-derived materials have recently attracted considerable interest as alternatives to noble-metal electrocatalysts. Herein, the rational design and synthesis of a new class of Co@N-C materials (C-MOF-C2-T) from a pair of enantiotopic chiral 3D MOFs by pyrolysis at temperature T is reported. The newly developed C-MOF-C2-900 with a unique 3D hierarchical rodlike structure, consisting of homogeneously distributed cobalt nanoparticles encapsulated by partially graphitized N-doped carbon rings along the rod length, exhibits higher electrocatalytic activities for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions (ORR and OER) than that of commercial Pt/C and RuO2, respectively. Primary Zn-air batteries based on C-MOF-900 for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) operated at a discharge potential of 1.30 V with a specific capacity of 741 mA h g(Zn)(-1) under 10 mA cm(-2). Rechargeable Zn-air batteries based on C-MOF-C2-900 as an ORR and OER bifunctional catalyst exhibit initial charge and discharge potentials at 1.81 and 1.28 V (2 mA cm(-2)), along with an excellent cycling stability with no increase in polarization even after 120 h - outperform their counterparts based on noble-metal-based air electrodes. The resultant rechargeable Zn-air batteries are used to efficiently power electrochemical water-splitting systems, demonstrating promising potential as integrated green energy systems for practical applications.

Abstract:Highlights A novel method is developed to prepare bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts composed of Co nanoparticles and highly dispersed Fe loaded on N-doped carbon substrates by virtues of metal-organic frameworks and two different doping processes. The designed catalysts show comparable performance with commercial catalysts. Meanwhile, rechargeable Zn-air batteries with prepared catalysts demonstrate high peak power density and good cycling stability. The performance promotion originates from the synergy between Co nanoparticles and highly dispersed Fe, porous structures, large specific areas, and distinct three-dimensional carbon networks. Searching for cheap, efficient, and stable oxygen electrocatalysts is vital to promote the practical performance of Zn-air batteries with high theoretic energy density. Herein, a series of Co nanoparticles and highly dispersed Fe loaded on N-doped porous carbon substrates are prepared through a "double-solvent" method with in situ doped metal-organic frameworks as precursors. The optimized catalysts exhibit excellent performance for oxygen reduction and evolution reaction. Furthermore, rechargeable Zn-air batteries with designed catalysts demonstrate higher peak power density and better cycling stability than those with commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 . According to structure characterizations and electrochemical tests, the interaction of Co nanoparticles and highly dispersed Fe contributes to the superior performance for oxygen electrocatalysis. In addition, large specific surface areas, porous structures and interconnected three-dimensional carbon networks also play important roles in improving oxygen electrocatalysis. This work provides inspiration for rational design of advanced oxygen electrocatalysts and paves a way for the practical application of rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:The development of low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of critical importance for clean energy devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, a sophisticated nanostructure composed of CoS, Co and MoC nanoparticles incorporated in N and S dual-doped porous carbon nanofibers (CoS/Co/MoC-N, S-PCNFs) as a high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalyst is designed and synthesized via an efficient multi-step strategy. The as-prepared CoS/Co/MoC-N, S-PCNFs exhibit a positive half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.871 V for ORR and a low overpotential of 289 mV at 10 mA/cm2 for OER, outperforming the non-noble metal-based catalysts reported. Furthermore, the assembled Zn-air battery based on CoS/Co/MoC-N, S-PCNFs delivers an excellent power density (169.1 mW/cm2), a large specific capacity (819.3 mA h/g) and robust durability, demonstrating the great potential of the as-developed bifunctional electrocatalyst in practical applications. This work is expected to inspire the design of advanced bifunctional nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts for energy storage.

Abstract:Metal-loaded nitrogen-doped carbon (M@N-C) catalysts have shown promise as electrocatalysts for replacing noble metal catalysts in industrial processes. To study the influence on structural and performance caused by different bimetal doping, a family of bimetals CoM@N-C (M=Cu/Ni/Fe) composites with porous surface and abundant C defects were well-designed. After bimetallic doping, more defects are introduced into the carbon frameworks, and the Metal-N species are fixed. As such, efficient utilization of active sites and rapid mass transfer make the reaction kinetics process more favorable and stable. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that Cu/Ni doping optimizes the electronic environment of the Co-N, resulting in the balanced adsorption and dissociation of oxygen intermediates. While the synergy of FeCo activates the O=O, which promotes the sharp decrease in free energy of *OOH to *O, shifting the rate-determining step for ORR. This indicates the adsorption site transfer of CoFe 0.05 @N-C in oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. The CoFe 0.05 @N-C catalyst exhibits superior bifunctional catalytic activity than that of Pt catalysts ( E 1/2 =0.85V, E j=10 =1.65V). This work presents a simple strategy to fabricate well-defined bimetals doping in bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts and it is expected to inspire future work on the role of electronic structure modulation and interface engineering.

Abstract:Abstract Developing efficient and stable multifunctional electrocatalyst is very important for zinc–air batteries in practical. Herein, semiconductive spinel CuFe 2 O 4 supported Co–N co-doped carbon (Co-NC) and CoFe alloy nanoparticles were proposed. In this strategy, the three-dimensional ordered macroporous CuFe 2 O 4 support provides rich channels for mass transmission, revealling good corrosion-resistance and durability at the same time. ZIF-67 derived Co-NC decoration improves the conductivity of the catalyst. Further, the uniformly distributed Co-NC and CoFe nanoparticles (C/CF) dramatically promote the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Accordingly, C/CF@CuFe 2 O 4 catalyst shows remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic activity, with an ORR half-wave potential of 0.86 V, and an OER over-potential of 0.46 V at 10 mA cm −2 . The zinc–air battery using this catalyst exhibits a power density of 95.5 mW cm −2 and a durable cyclability for over 170 h at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which implies a great potential in practical application.

Abstract:Fe/Co/N co-doped multi-channel interpenetrating three-dimensional graphene catalyst (FeCo–N-3D-HG) with good oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic performances is prepared by a facile method, using poly (2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI), iron salt, cobalt salt and nanometer CaCO 3 (template). ABPBI forms a complex with iron and cobalt ions and the complex is coated on the surface of CaCO 3 . The pyrolysis process is carried out in an Ar gas protection, the template is removed by acid to obtain FeCo–N-3D-HG. The results show that FeCo–N-3D-HG is three-dimensional multi-layered graphene structure with multi-channels. The catalytic performance of ORR (E 1/2 = 0.860 V vs RHE) is better than 20 wt% Pt/C in O 2 saturated 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. The catalyst also shows similar OER performance with the RuO 2 in 1 M KOH solution. The prepared zinc-air battery exhibits outstanding peak power density (261.7 mW cm −2 ), preeminent specific capacity (760.1 mAh g −1 ), and good cycle durability (150 h).

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon composites with embedded metal alloy/metal oxides have attracted much attention due to their low-cost and excellent electrochemical reactivity. However, the drawback of this concept is the severe carbon evaporation during their synthesis, resulting in a reduction of active sites and catalytic durability. To solve this problem, this study proposes the possibility of using Ketjen black (KB) to replenish the carbon content. Impressively, MOF-derived bimetal and oxide N-doped porous carbon (CoNi-CoO-NiO@NC-800) exhibits extremely high catalytic activity with an oxygen reduction reaction (half-wave potential: 0.83 V) and oxygen evolution reaction (overpotential: 352 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) potential gap of 0.75 V due to the virtue of the hierarchically porous structure and sufficient active sites. By combining theoretical studies, a strong synergetic coupling of the CoNi dual metal is proposed in decreasing the overall reaction barriers and promoting the reversible oxygen reactions. Moreover, the assembled liquid- and all-solid-state Zn-air batteries (ZABs) with the bifunctional catalyst as the air cathode demonstrate superior discharging (223 mW cm-2 at 310 mA cm-2) and charging-discharging performance and long lifetime (450 cycles, 75 h). This work will provide guidance for the rational design of metal/carbon hybrid catalysts and cut-price reproducible energy systems.
N-Doped carbon coating enhances the bifunctional oxygen reaction activity of CoFe nanoparticles for a highly stable Zn-air battery

Abstract:The construction of a high performance and stable non-precious metal-air-cathode is of great significance for a Zn-air battery (ZAB). Herein, 3D nanosheets consisting of N-doped carbon conglutinated CoFe alloy nanoparticles grown on carbon cloth (CoFe@NC/CC) have been prepared through simple electrodeposition and subsequent thermal decomposition. The cathode showed excellent activity and stability for the bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), due to the synergic effect of the CoFe alloy and the N-doped carbon conglutinated structures. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the introduction of the N-doped carbon structures can greatly weaken the O-2 adsorption energy on the CoFe alloy nanoparticles, thus enhancing the bifunctional ORR/OER activity of the catalyst. As a binder-less self-supporting electrode, the assembled liquid ZAB showed a high open circuit voltage of 1.469 V, and it could be stably cycled for more than 400 cycles with a charge-discharge voltage gap of 0.77 V at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), surpassing the performance of Pt/C + RuO2/C benchmarks and other reported CoFe-based electrocatalysts. Furthermore, the all-solid-state ZAB was shown to be a battery with good flexibility for wearable electronics, satisfying the requirements of next-generation sustainable active electronics.

Abstract:To commercialize the rechargeable zinc-air (Zn-air) battery, it is desirable but challenging to design highly active, low-cost, stable, and earth-rich bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to replace rare, expensive, and unstable noble-metal electrocatalysts. Herein, two MOFs are combined under electrostatic interaction and pressure by the way of Ball milling. Then, after post-processing including calcination, acid pickling, and N doping, the bimetal (Fe and Co) and N triple-doped porous carbon electrocatalyst (MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 ) is prepared. Noteworthily, the MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 has bimetallic active sites, high contents of pyridine N and graphite N, large surface area, mesoporous structure, and conductive carbon skeletons, which decide the excellent ORR performance. For ORR, the half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.902 V vs. RHE) of MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 is 27 mV higher than that of 20 wt% Pt/C ( E 1/2 = 0.875 vs. RHE). And the catalyst has also excellent methanol tolerance and stability. The Zn-air battery with MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 as cathode catalyst has higher peak power density (176.5 mW cm −2 ) than that with 20 wt% Pt/C (141.8 mW cm −2 ) and 20 wt% Pt/C + RuO 2 (94.4 mW cm −2 ) as cathode catalyst. Meanwhile, the Zn-air battery with MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 as cathode catalyst exhibits perfect charge-discharge stability (longer than 540 h).

Abstract:Designing rational transition-metal/carbon composites with highly dispersed and firmly anchored nanoparticles (NPs) to prevent agglomeration and shedding is crucial for realizing excellent electrocatalytic performances. Herein, a biomass pore-confined strategy based on mesoporous willow catkin is explored to obtain uniformly dispersed CoFe NPs in N-doped carbon nanotubes and hollow carbon fibers (CoFe@N-CNTs/HCFs). The resultant catalyst exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance, which affords a half-wave potential of 0.86 V (vs. RHE) with a limited current density of 6.0 mA·cm −2 for oxygen reduction reaction and potential of 1.67 V (vs. RHE) at 10 mA·cm −2 in 0.1 M KOH for oxygen evolution reaction. When applied to rechargeable zinc–air batteries, a maximum power density of 340 mW·cm −2 and long-term cyclic durability over 800 h are achieved. Such superior bifunctional electrocatalytic activities are ascribed to the biocarbon matrix with abundant mesopores and unobstructed hollow channels, CoFe NPs with high dispersion and controllable nanoscale and the hybrid composite with optimized electronic structure. This work presents an effective approach for constraining the size and dispersion of NPs in a low-cost biocarbon substrate, offering valuable insights for designing advanced oxygen electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Searching for high active, low cost and durable catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains challenge in developing metal-air battery cathodes. Herein, we proposed a novel bifunctional catalyst derived from the pyrolysis of Co/Fe/Zn trimetallic zeolitic imidazolite framework. The obtained Co@CoFe0.01-N-C catalyst displays desirable activity for both ORR and OER (E-1/2 = 0.844 V, E-j=10 = 1.654 V). The Zn-air battery equipped with Co@CoFe0.01-N-C catalyst on the cathode exhibits a high peak power density of 174.1 mW cm(2), which is much superior than that of commercial 20% Pt/C (87.6 mW cm(2)). Abstract:In recent years, bifunctional electrocatalysts derived from zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) as a carbon substrate have been a hot research topic. In addition, one-component catalyst cannot achieve the efficient catalysis of oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction( OER). At the same time, this paper reports a bifunctional catalyst with a bimetallic three-dimensional porous structure using silicon spheres as a hard template and ZIF as a carbon substrate. The inherent porosity of pie-shaped ZIF, the use of silica templates to generate an ordered macroporous structure, and the synergy between metal activity sites, which together promote the mass transfer and electrocatalytic activity of the battery. The synthesized catalyst showed excellent electrocatalytic activity toward ORR and OER including a half-wave potential (E 1/2 =0.80 V) which is 20 mv less than Pt/C, and its overpotential (0.321 V) and voltage gap (ΔE=0.751 V) surpasses commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 catalyst (0.368 V, ΔE=0.778 V). Moreover, primary and rechargeable Zn-air battery is assembled based on this catalyst delivered preferable performance, including a high power density (98.7 mw cm -2 ),batter charge/discharge cycling stability (220 h) exceeds commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 catalyst (160 h). Given its unique pore structure and good electrical conductivity, this derived material has scope for expansion in bifunctional catalysis and other energy technologies for rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:The design and preparation of non-noble metal catalysts with high catalytic activity and robust stability are important in the research of metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Here, a three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically ordered porous carbon nanomaterial was conveniently synthesized with zeolite-imidazole framework (ZIF-8) carbonization using the silica-template method and carbon nanotube (CNT) growth. The addition of an iron source endows the porous mFeNC-CNT with Fe-based nanoparticles and abundant atomically dispersive Fe-Nx sites from its nitrogen-incorporated graphitic carbon matrix. As a result, the 3D porous structure reduces the charge transport resistance, and the iron and nitrogen codoped carbon exhibits excellent catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) similar to that of commercial Pt/C. Meanwhile, the interwoven CNTs obtained under urea catalysis further shorten the ion and electron diffusion pathway. Experimental and theoretical analyses revealed that the optimized mFeNC-CNT has a high ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.908 V and a large open-circuit voltage (1.556 V) when applied on zinc-air batteries. This work provides a promising strategy for the rational design and facile synthesis of high-performing non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for energy storage, conversion, and transport applications.

Abstract:The traditional oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) catalysts are mainly noble metal-based materials, but their scarcity and instability impede their practical applications, especially in Zn-air batteries. Hence, identifying a bifunctional catalyst with low-cost and high-stability is very crucial for Zn-air batteries. Herein, we report a simple method to prepare core-shell-structured Co@Co3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated into N-doped carbon polyhedra by carbonization and controlled oxidation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are then applied as a bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air batteries. Using such a configuration, enhanced performances, including a high power density of similar to 64 mW cm(-2), a stable voltage profile over 80 h battery operation with four mechanical recharges, a small discharge/charge overpotential of similar to 0.66 V and a long-life of 100 cycles for 200 h operation at 5 mA cm(-2), have been achieved. These excellent performances can be attributed to abundant graphited carbon and CNTs, high N-doping, plentiful pores, the synergy between the semiconductive Co3O4-coating layer and the conductive Co bulk, and the uniform Co@Co3O4 nanoparticles in this catalyst which effectively improve electrical conductivity/ion transfer and further concertedly promote the catalytic activity towards the ORR/OER. Moreover, the belt-shaped polymer Zn-air battery with this catalyst also shows good electrochemical stability under different deformations.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) function as the key technologies for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) and other energy conversion devices, whereas the proliferation still hinges on bifunctional catalysts to address their slow kinetics. Herein, we purpose a mulberry-like architecture of cobalt-nitrogen doped carbon spheres encapsulating Co particles (Co-MP@NCS) through a template-engaged pyrolysis as ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalysts for ZABs. Co-MP@NCS with abundant active sites possesses advantages such as hierarchical pores and strong coupling effect between the components, optimizing the reaction pathway and accelerating the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate the critical role of coordinated Co and nanoparticles in modulating the electronic and magnetic configurations, establishing novel structure-activity correlations. The bifunctional electrocatalyst manifest an ORR half-wave potential of 0.85 V and an OER overpotential of 233 mV at 10 mA cm-2. The assembled aqueous ZAB display an attractive power density of 181 mW cm-2.
