Abstract:Carbon materials are used as the anode materials of potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) thanks to the feasible intercalation of potassium ions. However, their rate capability and cycling performance are still unsatisfactory. In this work, FeCl3-intercalated expanded graphite (FeCl3-EG) is first reported as an excellent anode material of KIBs. Attributed to the unique structure with FeCl3 sandwiched between the adjacent graphene layers, the FeCl3-EG electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 269.5 mAh g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1) and 133.1 mAh g(-1) at an ultrahigh current density of 5000 mA g(-1). The FeCl3-EG electrode also exhibits an ultrastable cycling performance. Even after 500 cycles at the current density of 50 mA g(-1), the FeCl3-EG electrode can still deliver a discharge capacity of 224.1 mAh g(-1) with a high capacity retention of approximate to 88.82%. Moreover, the FeCl3-EG electrode is measured at an ultrahigh current density of 2000 mA g(-1) for 1300 cycles, with a high capacity retention of approximate to 70.38%. Ex situ X-ray diffraction, Raman, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements are performed to investigate the potassium storage mechanism of FeCl3-EG electrode, which confirms the FeCl3-EG a promising anode material for high-performance KIBs.

Abstract:Carnallite is a kind of high-quality source of raw material for the production of potash fertilizer (KCl) in industry. However, how to produce potash fertilizer sustainably at low temperature has always been a problem. In this work, we synthesized an emerging morpholine-typed Gemini surfactant, butanediyl-α, ω-bis (morpholino dodeculammonium bromide) (BM), which can be used to collect NaCl in reverse flotation carnallite ores in a low-temperature environment. We compared its ability to collect NaCl and carnallite with the monomeric surfactant 4-laurylmorpholine (LM) at low temperatures. The flotation test results indicated that BM has a stronger collecting ability for NaCl than that of conventional LM collector. At room temperature (25 °C), BM exhibits a forceful collecting function to NaCl and preeminent selectivity for carnallite. The recovery of NaCl ran up to 98.0% when the concentration of BM was 1 × 10−5 mol/L. Under the same condition, the flotation recovery using LM was only 39.0%. The recoveries of carnallite of the two were not more than 3.5%. When the environment temperature descended, the effect of BM for NaCl exhibited a stronger stable trend. The recovery with BM as a collector raised notably from 68.0% to 96.5% with temperature ranging from 0 °C to 15 °C. However, in the same scope of dosage and temperature, the recovery with LM collector only raised from 3.5% to 31.5%. At 0 °C, LM lost the vast majority of its collector performance, while BM still showed high performance.

Abstract:Herein we present a Gemini surfactant can efficiently separate magnetite from quartz by reverse froth flotation to produce iron ore at 273 K. Achieving the obviously superior flotation performance (TFe recovery increased by 48.18%), the dosage of Gemini surfactant is three times less than conventional monomeric surfactant. Our new findings will serve as a general guide to design a new and excellent collector for high-efficiency mineral flotation and leads to the efficient and clean development of mineral resources.

Abstract:Potassium fertilizer plays a critical role in increasing the food production. Carnallite is concentrated by reverse froth flotation and used as a raw material to produce potassium fertilizer (KCl) in agriculture. However, all the surfactants used in the carnallite reverse flotation process are conventional monomeric surfactants contain a single similar hydrophobic group in the molecule, which results in a low production efficiency. In this work, a new morpholine-based Gemini surfactant, 1,4-bis (morpholinododecylammonio) butane dibromide (BMBD), was prepared and originally recommended as a collector for reverse froth flotation separation of halite (NaCl) from carnallite ore. The flotation results indicated BMBD had higher flotation recovery and stronger affinity of halite against carnallite compared with conventional monomeric surfactant N-(n-Dodecyl) morpholine (DDM). Fourier transform infrared spectra suggested that BMBD molecules were adsorbed on halite surface rather than the carnallite surface. Additionally, BMBD molecules can strongly reduce the surface tension of NaCl saturated solution. Considering the BMBD's unique properties, such as double reactive centers to mineral surfaces, double hydrophobic groups, and stronger surface tension reducing ability, made it be a superior collector for reverse flotation desalination from carnallite ores than DDM.

Abstract:In froth flotation separation process, the collector molecular design has a crucial effect on potash processing to ensure sustainable production of potassium fertilizer (KCl) that is important to secure food supply in human society. Carnallite is an important source of KCl fertilizer production in industry. Reverse flotation has been used to separate halite (NaCl) impurities from carnallite (KCl·MgCl2·6H2O) for carnallite resources. However, progress in the carnallite resource reverse froth flotation has been constrained by the inherent limitation of traditional collector molecules with a single hydrophilic head and single hydrophobic chain per molecule. Herein, a novel morpholine-based Gemini molecule with double hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic chains, butanediyl-α, ω-bis (morpholino tetradecylammonium bromide) (BMTB) was synthesized and applied as the flotation collector in the reverse flotation separation for carnallite mineral. The better flotation performance of Gemini BMTB was achieved, compared to the traditional monomeric surfactant N-(n-Tetradecyl) morpholine (TDM). The bench-scale froth flotation separation results revealed that BMTB exhibited outstanding affinity and selectivity for NaCl crystals from carnallite at natural pH, resulting in less collector dosages – only 1/3 of TDM molecules. In contrast with traditional monomeric surfactant TDM (120 g/t), less amount of Gemini BMTB (40 g/t) – only one third of TDM molecules, was needed to obtain higher KCl recovery (KCl recovery raised by 4.69%). Meanwhile, the grade of NaCl with 40 g/t BMTB collector (2.19%) was lower than that with 120 g/t TDM collector (3.91%), and the grade of KCl with BMTB collector (22.59%) was higher than that with TDM collector (22.12%). Therefore, this work demonstrated the next-generation of flotation collector for the reverse froth flotation separation of the carnallite resources.

Abstract:A production process for extracting potassic fertilizer from low-grade potassium mixed salt comprises the following steps: (1) grinding the potassium mixed salt with low potassium content; (2) performing flotation on a ground product by a flotation reagent cation collector to concentrate K+; (3) converting the concentrated potassium salt concentrate into picromeride at normal temperature not lower than 18 DEG C, wherein, the conversion process has two methods: one method is conversion by the known fresh water or micro-brine water conversion, and the second method is that the picromeride flotation mother liquor is added with fresh water or micro-brine water to perform brine-added conversion, the conversion liquid-solid weight ratio is 1.0-1.5:1 and the conversion time lasts 30-60min; and (4) filtering the converted picromeride solid-liquid mixture, directly drying the picromeride solid, or filtering, washing and drying the picromeride solid again. The production process has the advantages of simple technological process, low energy consumption, simple and convenient operation, high K+ recovery rate, low production cost and good economic benefit.

Removal of Feldspar from Phosphate Ore Using Gemini Quaternary Ammonium Salt As a Novel Collector

Abstract:Feldspar is a typical sesquioxide which is associated with phosphate ore. It can greatly prevent the formation of calcium sulfate crystals during the wet process of phosphoric acid production, resulting in the loss of P2O5, and therefore lowering the phosphoric acid recovery. To achieve the selective separation of feldspar from phosphate ore, we first tried using a new Gemini quaternary ammonium salt as the collector in conjunction with a reverse flotation approach. The flotation tests of single minerals and artificially mixed minerals were employed to investigate the collecting ability and selectivity of the collector, the adsorption mechanism was also evaluated by means of zeta potential measurements and molecular dynamic calculations. The flotation results demonstrate that the collector showed a strong harvesting effect and selectivity on feldspar rather than fluorapatite. When the Gemini concentration was set at 7.5 x 10-6 mol/L, the P2O5 grade could reach 31.69% with a corresponding recovery of 77.57%, indicating that Gemini collector could suitably be used as a potential chemical to achieve the effective removal of feldspar from phosphate ore. The results obtained from zeta potential measurements and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the adsorption of Gemini collector on feldspar was more pronounced compared to that on fluorapatite surface and the interaction between Gemini and both minerals was mainly ascribed to electrostatic interaction. This work aims to provide a reference for using Gemini as collector combined with reverse flotation approach to achieve the effective removal of sesquioxide from phosphate ore and further enhance the quality of phosphate fertilizers.

Abstract:With the frequent occurrence and negative impacts of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on coastal countries throughout the world, it is urgently needed to find ways to control HABs effectively. Vermiculite, montmorillonite, palygorskite, and kaolin were modified with a Gemini surfactant to explore a new algaecide for controlling HABs. The removal efficiency of the modified clay minerals was evaluated with Chattonella marina, a typical HAB alga in China. Gemini modified vermiculite (G-VER) exhibited the highest removal rate against C. marina. When the concentration of G-VER (21.1% Gemini) was 6.5mg/L, the removal rate reached to 100%. Dispersed in sea water for 72h, only 3% of Gemini was released from the G-VER, indicating that the modified clay minerals had good stability in sea water and caused low impacts in the aquatic environment. G-VER is considered a potential algaecide with high efficiency and environmental safety.

Abstract:Red mud and coal fly ash (CFA) are bulk aluminum-containing solid waste in the industrial production process, posing a great threat to the environment and ecological security. The present paper proposes a novel method for one-step producing potassium-containing fertilizer synergistically extracting Al2O3 by KOH hydrothermally treating red mud or CFA. In this paper, the dissolving ratio of Al2O3 in the K2O-Al2O3-H2O ternary system and the extraction of Al2O3 from red mud or CFA after hydrothermal treatment with KOH were investigated. The phase structure transformation of leaching residue obtained under various conditions was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and the fertilization efficiency of the products was verified by potting experiments. The results show that the dissolving ratio of Al2O3 can reach the highest value of 85.04% at 120 °C with the K2O mass fraction of 24.90% in the ternary system. When red mud or CFA was hydrothermally leached with 240 g/L K2O at 240 °C, the Al2O3 extraction rates of 25.50% and 31.42% could be separately obtained, and the leachate could be reused. The main phases of the leaching residue were kaliophilite, illite, and megakalsilite, and the content of K2O was 7.83% and 26.89%, which can be applied as potassium-containing fertilizer to improve soil fertility and effectively promote the growth of pakchoi. The process improves the comprehensive utilization of red mud and CFA without secondary pollution, reduces the negative impact on the environment, and opens up a new way to apply bulk solid waste in the agricultural field.

Abstract:Few studies have paid attention to high-concentration controlled release potassium (CRK) fertilizer because conventional potassium chloride (KCl) particles with the characteristics of irregular, high specific surface area, and bad fluidity are generally unsuitable to produce controlled-release fertilizer. The objective of this study was to investigate the interacting effects of urea-formaldehyde and additives on KCl granulation. In addition, the controlled-release characteristics of CRK based on modified KCl particles were determined in our research. Results indicated that 4–8% urea-formaldehyde combined with 6–8% bentonite was used as a double binder to increase the granulation rate, smoothness, and particle hardness of KCl granules, which enhanced its characteristics for the coating process. The K release rates of modified KCl particle-based CRK were significantly lower than that of the conventional KCl particle. In conclusion, the novel KCl granulation technology has an enormous potential for large-scale applications to satisfy the increasing demand for CRK fertilizers in the future.

Abstract:The K-feldspar mineral is an insoluble potassium resource with a high potassium content and the most extensive and abundant reserves. To address the insufficient supply of soluble potassium fertilizers in China, the application of appropriate processing methods to extract potassium from K-feldspar and transform it into a soluble potassium fertilizer is of great significance. To date, various techniques have been developed to extract potassium from K-feldspar and produce a soluble potassium fertilizer. This review summarizes the main methods, i.e., the hydrothermal, high-temperature pyrolysis, microbial decomposition, and low-temperature methods, for potassium extraction from K-feldspar. The mechanisms, efficiencies, impact parameters, and research progress of each potassium extraction method are comprehensively discussed. This study also compares the merits and drawbacks of the individual methods in terms of potassium extraction efficiency and practical operating conditions. The species of additives, reaction temperature, reaction time, particle size of K-feldspar, and dosage of additives significantly affected the potassium extraction efficiency. Moreover, the combination of different methods was very effective in improving the potassium extraction efficiency. This review elaborates the research prospects and potential strategies for the efficient utilization of the K-feldspar mineral as a fertilizer resource.

Extraction and quantitation of various potassium salts in straw ash

Abstract:Biomass ash contains various potassium salts, which have high potential as crop fertilizers. In this study, a method of extracting and quantifying various potassium salts from straw ash was proposed and investigated. Straw ash was prepared in a muffle furnace at 500 degrees C and then successively and repeatedly treated through leaching, filtration, concentration, and crystallization. The extracted products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. Results show that the elemental potassium content and potassium salt content in the recovered products reached 43.1 and 78.1%, respectively. The potassium salts mainly existed as K2SO4, KCl, and K2CO3 at a molar mass ratio of 1:2.33:1.73. The extraction ratio of the products increased with increasing extraction time. The initial extraction ratio was 35.71%. This ratio increased to 50.15 and 69.43% when the extraction process was repeated for the second and sixth times, respectively. This work provides an efficient method of recovering and extracting potassium salts from biomass ash for use as potash fertilizers. Abstract:Alkyl quaternary ammonium-modified clay minerals, which are common environmentally friendly materials, have been widely studied and applied for the removal of pollutants. However, there are few reports on functionalizing the counterions to expand the application. In this study, the cationic gemini surfactant butane-1,4-bis(dodecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide) (gBDDA) and tetrachloroferrate (FeCl4–) are designed to modify montmorillonite (Mt), and the obtained FeCl4–/Gemini-Mt composite (FeOMt) is used for the removal of nitrate and/or phosphate from aqueous solution. The successful intercalation of gBDDA and favorable loading of FeCl4– into FeOMt are suggested by the characterization results of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Nitrate and/or phosphate are rapidly sequestered, and the respective maximum uptakes of 8.77 (N) and 28.1 (P) mg/g in the binary system are obtained. The phosphate uptake is stably maintained against many coexisting ions, but the nitrate uptake decreases with the increase in ionic strength. FeOMt is reusable and shows comparable uptake for nitrate and phosphate with respect to gBDDA-modified Mt and polymerized ferric chloride. Considering the multi-functionality and facile synthesis, FeOMt shows promising potential in the purification of wastewater contaminated simultaneously by poorly hydrated anions (e.g., ClO4–, TcO4–, etc.) and iron-selective anions (e.g., H2AsO4–, etc.).

Abstract:In the past several decades, Gemini viscoelastic surfactant has been applied for many cases due to its specific properties, including clean fracturing fluid. As we know that counter-ions can greatly promote the micelle aggregation of VES and show important effect on its heat resistance. Potassium chloride, as a normal additive for fracturing fluids to control the clay swelling, was investigated as such counter-ions in the context. Thus, a clean fracturing fluid with good heat resistance could be obtained by studying the viscosity reduction of the fluid prepared from a novel Gemini VES. The results of molecular structure characterization showed that potassium chloride has no effect on the surfactant molecular structure in rheological tests at high temperature. Based on the rheological tests, it can be concluded that the viscosity reduction at the test conditions is mainly of the micelle dissociation. Analysis results, such as microstructure comparison and the dynamic light scattering, suggested that potassium chloride can facilitate the micelles aggregation and entanglement, especially making the micelles tighter. In this way, the fluid could keep higher viscoelasticity at higher temperature and certain shear rate. Based on this mechanism, an improved VES fracturing fluid could be achieved via iterative formation adjustment, whose final viscosity could be maintained about 40 mPa s at 160 degrees C during 120 min.

Abstract:This report introduces a novel method of separating potassium from sodium by synthesizing K-alunite using activated aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3). A two-step operation, consisting of the mechanochemical activation of Al(OH)3 and subsequent hydrothermal processing at a low temperature of 80°C with Al2(SO4)3 · 18H2O and K2SO4 or Na2SO4, was conducted. K-alunite but not Na-alunite at this low temperature was successfully formed, leading to the possible separation of potassium sulfate from sodium sulfate more easily. The process may serve the purpose of recovering potassium from some aqueous alkali sources for providing potash fertilizer in agricultural application.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate processing techniques for KNO3 preparation through green chemical reaction engineering of abundant rock-forming minerals to achieve materials sustainability. In this study, chemical reactions at both low and high temperatures were conducted to investigate the extraction of potassium from kalsilite, KAlSiO4 for use as a K-fertilizer material and simultaneous transformation of kalsilite to materials such as aluminosilicate gel at low temperatures or muscovite at high temperatures; both these materials have many uses. In the low temperature range of 30 to 80 degrees C, the optimal conditions to extract potassium from KAlSiO4 and to obtain aluminosilicate gel were found to be as follows: by using then (HNO3)/n(KAlSiO4) ratio of 1.1, solid to water (S/L) ratio of 1 : 10, a reaction time of 3 h and a temperature of 40 degrees C. In the high temperature range of 210 to 250 degrees C, both potassium extraction and crystallization of muscovite were achieved at 250 degrees C. The mechanisms of K extractions and the simultaneous crystallization of muscovite at higher temperatures were determined by using different characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, SEM/TEM, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MAS NMR). Results from the above characterization tools demonstrated that kalsilite can be converted to muscovite by dissolution and recrystallization under hydrothermal conditions at 250 degrees C while releasing K into solution simultaneously. Three comprehensive utilization routes of potassium-rich rocks for KNO3 preparation were proposed. Our current results suggest that molecular engineering of abundant natural minerals may lead to materials sustainability through a green chemical approach where reactions are conducted in a closed system to prevent pollution and recover all the components as resources.
Process Optimization Potassium Nanofertilizer Production via Ionotropic Pre-gelation using Alginate-Chitosan Carrier

Abstract:Potassium nanofertilizer synthesis by incorporating potassium in alginate-chitosan carrier via ionotropic pre-gelation was optimized to maximize potassium content and develop controlled release fertilizer. Utilizing two-level factorial design, potassium to alginate ratio, calcium chloride to alginate ratio, and pre-gelation time were determined significant. Central Composite Design for optimization was utilized to generate a Response Surface model relating the factors to the response for numerical optimization. Optimum process conditions for maximum potassium content were (1) 1.5:1 (w/w) potassium to alginate ratio, (2) 6.5:117.5 (v/v) calcium chloride to alginate ratio, and (3) 40 minutes pre-gelation time. The potassium content of the fertilizer formulated at optimum condition was successfully verified to contain 29.75 %K(w/w). Characterization showed that potassium was successfully incorporated in the alginatechitosan carrier as shown by the SEM surface images. DLS result showed two peaks at particle sizes near 594.1 nm and 102.8 nm indicating that potassium nanofertilizer was successfully synthesized. Potassium nanofertilizer may be a controlled release fertilizer since only 14.6 %K was released after 24 hours in Britton-Robinson buffer solution. Preliminary costing shows higher cost of production based on raw materials, but it may be offset in the long run by longer availability of nutrient and low fertilizer application rate.

Abstract:BackgroundThe last few decades have seen the critical role of global cattle industry in agricultural development. However, while giving prosperity and significant benefits to the countryside, the industry also produces wastewater streams, that cause eutrophication in water bodies. The streams, if treated effectively, could act as a valuable nonconventional water source to help address the global freshwater crisis. Moreover, resources recovered from these wastewater streams, e.g., potassium (K) and phosphorus (P), could be converted to valuable commodities such as fertilizers. We, therefore, propose to use a continuous K–struvite granulation process as an effective method for the treatment of swine wastewater (SW) and recovery of K–struvite. Results show that the P and K were efficiently removed and that wastewater-derived K–struvite is a promising green chemistry agent for a slow–release, reinforcing a promising pathway to global P and K conservation.MethodsThe fluidized-bed homogeneous granulation (FBHG) has recently emerged as an advanced metal recovery technology with high efficiencies for several metals and low moisture products. Based on the principle of chemical precipitation, FBHG technology requires less chemicals while producing insignificant amounts of sludge, thereby alleviating burden on sludge management often encountered in conventional chemical precipitation and others.Significant findingsHerein, we investigate the potential use of FBHG technology for simultaneous recovering K and P while treating swine wastewater. The recovered products are in the form of K–struvite pellets having a studded quasi-spherical form with a rough surface and sharp spikes that resemble sea urchins. The pellets are almost free of heavy metals, which make them promising candidates for use as fertilizer without significant harm. We observed that the release of K was faster than that of P. The formation, size, morphology, purity, and crushing strength of the pellets greatly affected the up-flow velocity value condition. The FBHG could potentially be scaled up for more extensive nutrient recovery.

Experimental Study on Decomposition of K-feldspar with CaCl_2 and NaCl for Extraction of Potassium

Abstract:Research on decomposing potassium feldspar to extract potassium by calcination with the composite additive made of CaCl_2 and NaCl was carried out.The phase analysis of products and decomposition process were studied by means of XRD and TG-DSC.The results show that the composite additive can shorten the time to reach the reaction balance,and obtain higher extraction rate at a lower calcination temperature and shorter calcination time,and the lower the temperature or the shorter the time,the more obvious the effect.The extraction rate of potassium using the composite additive is 93.65%,22.57% higher than using CaCl_2 and 39.56% higher than using NaCl at the conditions of 800℃ and 60 min.When the temperature reaches 700 ℃,the reaction rate of the system becomes rapidly,and the composite additive can effectively decrease the decomposition temperature.The optimum calcination temperature range is 800~890 ℃.

Abstract:Potassium feldspar (K-feldspar) was decomposed with limestone and dolomite as additives to prepare alkaline mineral silicon-calcium-potassium-magnesium fertilizer (abbreviated as Si–Ca–K–Mg fertilizer) via high temperature calcination route. The effects of calcination temperature on the mineral composition, extraction ratios of available effective elements, and the microstructure of powder particles of Si–Ca–K–Mg fertilizer were studied in detail. The results show that the high-efficiency potassium extraction ratio (83%) and silicon extraction ratio (96%) are obtained in the fertilizer calcined at 1250 °C. The reason is that most of the K-feldspar is decomposed into nanoscale kalsilite crystalline grains, which are easily soluble in weak acids. In addition, part of the kalsilite and most leucite melt into amorphous substances. Above 1300 °C, the extraction ratios of potassium and silicon, including calcium and magnesium, are all close to 100%, because the fertilizer particles are basically in an amorphous state. Furthermore, the elements in the Si–Ca–K–Mg fertilizer can be directly absorbed by the crops in the acidic soil. Therefore, this work can promote the comprehensive development of water-insoluble K-feldspar resources and enhance the sustainable use of soil.
