Abstract:Four new isostructural rare earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) were synthesized and full characterized, namely, {[(CH)(2)NH(2)](3)[RE(2)(BTDBA)(2)(HCOO)]·5H(2)O·2DMF}(n) (H(4)BTDBA = (4',4'''-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)bis([1,1'-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarboxylic acid); RE = Eu (JXUST-34), Gd (JXUST-35), Tb (JXUST-36), and Dy (JXUST-37)). Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer ordered it structures that are useful for developing light-emitting materials. However, most COFs are weak in luminescence. Here we report the conversion of less emissive COFs into light-emitting materials via a pinpoint surgery on the pore walls. Deprotonation of the N-H bond to form an anionic nitrogen species in the hydrazone linkage can eliminate the nitrogen-related fluorescence quenching pathway. The resulting COF enhances the fluorescence in a linear proportion to the progress of deprotonation, achieving a 3.8-fold improved emission. This pinpoint N-H cleavage on the pore walls can be driven only by the fluoride anion while other halogen anions, including chloride, bromide, and iodide, remain inactive, enabling the selective fluorescence switch-on sensing of the fluoride anion at a ppb level.

Abstract:A reaction between a Zr-IV salt and a porphyrinic tetracarboxylic acid leads to a metal-organic framework (MOF) with two types of open channels, representing a MOF featuring a (4,8)-connected sqc net. The MOF remains intact in both boiling water and aqueous solutions with pH ranging from 1 to 11, a remarkably extensive pH range that a MOF can sustain. Given its exceptional stability and pH-dependent fluorescent intensity, the MOF can potentially be applied in fluorescent sensing.
