Abstract:The defect concentration in the prototypical metal-organic framework UiO-66 can be well controlled during synthesis, leading to precisely tunable physicochemical properties for this structure. However, there has been a long-standing debate regarding the nature of the compensating species present at the defective sites. Here, we present unambiguous spectroscopic evidence that the missing-linker defect sites in an ambient environment are compensated with both carboxylate and water (bound through intermolecular hydrogen bonding), which is further supported by ab initio calculations. In contrast to the prevailing assumption that the monocarboxylate groups (COO-) of the modulators form bidentate bonding with two Zr4+ sites, COO- is found to coordinate to an open Zr4+ site in an unidentate mode. The neighboring Zr4+ site is terminated by a coordinating H2O molecule, which helps to stabilize the COO- group. This finding not only provides a new understanding of defect termination in UiO-66, but also sheds light on the origin of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials with promising applications in molecular adsorption, separation, and catalysis. It has been discovered recently that structural defects introduced unintentionally or by design could have a significant impact on their properties. However, the exact chemical composition and structural evolution under different conditions at the defects are still under debate. In this study, we performed multidimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) coupled with computer simulations to elucidate an important scenario of MOF defects, uncovering the dynamic interplay between residual acetate and water. Acetate, as a defect modulator, and water, as a byproduct, are prevalent defect-associated species, which are among the key factors determining the reactivity and stability of defects. We discovered that acetate molecules coordinate to a single metal site monodentately and pair with water at the neighboring position. The acetates are highly flexible, which undergo fast libration as well as a slow kinetic exchange with water through dynamic hydrogen bonds. The dynamic processes under variable temperatures and different hydration levels have been quantitatively analyzed across a broad time scale from microseconds to seconds. The integration of SSNMR and computer simulations allows a precision probe into defective MOF structures with intrinsic dynamics and disorder.

Abstract:Defects in MOFs can benefit light absorption and charge transfer for photocatalytic application, nevertheless, studies on interplay between structural defects and photocatalytic properties of MOFs are in infancy. Herein, a series of UiO-66-NH2 with different kinds of defects were created for regulating CO2 photocatalytic reduction. Theoretical calculations in combination with experimental data verified that the sample with ligand-vacant (MO66-NH2-LV) defect performed better than non-defect, missing-cluster and monocarboxylate compensated ones in the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions. UiO-66-NH2-LV shows superior photocatalytic activity with the highest CO yield of 30.5 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) , which is 9.2 times higher than that of the sample with missing-cluster (UiO-66-NH2-MC), as well as the highest quantum yield (QY) of 0.90%. DFT calculations further demonstrate the correlation between discriminative photocatalytic activities in defect structures and tunable electronic properties characterized by absorption energy, E-abs, and charge transfer energy, ELMCT, in the photocatalytic process. The ligand-vacant defect with the lowest sum of E-abs and ELMCT will lower photocatalytic reaction energy barrier in the rate-limiting step among the elementary reaction step during CO2 photoreduction. The insights gained from this study will guide the MOFs defect-engineering for enhancing CO2 photocatalytic capacity.

Abstract:Defect engineering has arisen as a promising approach to tune and optimise the adsorptive performance of metal-organic frameworks. However, the balance between enhanced adsorption and structural stability remains an open question. Here both CO2 adsorption capacity and mechanical stability are calculated for the zirconium-based UiO-66, which is subject to systematic variations of defect scenarios. Modulator-dependence, defect concentration and heterogeneity are explored in isolation. Mechanical stability is shown to be compromised at high pressures where uptake is enhanced with an increase in defect concentration. Nonetheless this reduction in stability is minimised for reo type defects and defects with trifluoroacetate substitution. Finally, heterogeneity and auxeticity may also play a role in overcoming the compromise between adsorption and stability.

Abstract:Defect engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offers promising opportunities for tailoring their properties to specific functions and applications. However, determining the structures of defects in MOFs-either point defects or extended ones-has proved challenging owing to the difficulty of directly probing local structures in these typically fragile crystals. Here we report the real-space observation, with sub-unit-cell resolution, of structural defects in the catalytic MOF UiO-66 using a combination of low-dose transmission electron microscopy and electron crystallography. Ordered 'missing linker' and 'missing cluster' defects were found to coexist. The missing-linker defects, reconstructed three-dimensionally with high precision, were attributed to terminating formate groups. The crystallization of the MOF was found to undergo an Ostwald ripening process, during which the defects also evolve: on prolonged crystallization, only the missing-linker defects remained. These observations were rationalized through density functional theory calculations. Finally, the missing-cluster defects were shown to be more catalytically active than their missing-linker counterparts for the isomerization of glucose to fructose.

Abstract:The stability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) typically decreases with an increasing number of defects, limiting the number of defects that can be created and limiting catalytic and other applications. Herein, we use a hemilabile (Hl) linker to create up to a maximum of six defects per cluster in UiO-66. We synthesized hemilabile UiO-66 (Hl-UiO-66) using benzene dicarboxylate (BDC) as linker and 4-sulfonatobenzoate (PSBA) as the hemilabile linker. The PSBA acts not only as a modulator to create defects but also as a coligand that enhances the stability of the resulting defective framework. Furthermore, upon a postsynthetic treatment in H2SO4, the average number of defects increases to the optimum of six missing BDC linkers per cluster (three per formula unit), leaving the Zr-nodes on average sixfold coordinated. Remarkably, the thermal stability of the materials further increases upon this treatment. Periodic density functional theory calculations confirm that the hemilabile ligands strengthen this highly defective structure by several stabilizing interactions. Finally, the catalytic activity of the obtained materials is evaluated in the acid-catalyzed isomerization of α-pinene oxide. This reaction is particularly sensitive to the Brønsted or Lewis acid sites in the catalyst. In comparison to the pristine UiO-66, which mainly possesses Brønsted acid sites, the Hl-UiO-66 and the postsynthetically treated Hl-UiO-66 structures exhibited a higher Lewis acidity and an enhanced activity and selectivity. This is further explored by CD3CN spectroscopic sorption experiments. We have shown that by tuning the number of defects in UiO-66 using PSBA as the hemilabile linker, one can achieve highly defective and stable MOFs and easily control the Brønsted to Lewis acid ratio in the materials and thus their catalytic activity and selectivity.
