Abstract:According to the requirements of design and construction rules for mechanical components of pressurized water reactor nuclear islands, the primary hydrostatic test must be carried out before and after the operation of nuclear power plant. The overpressure protection system is used to prevent the accidental overpressure of the primary circuit during the hydrostatic test, and to alleviate the serious consequences of overpressure on the involved test equipment. The system design and equipment selection for the primary circuit of the third generation nuclear power plants are much different from that of the second generation ones. In addition, the construction of the third generation nuclear power plants is too late to have the reference experience. Based on the control characteristics of the primary process system in European pressurized water reactor and the deficiency of the overpressure protection system in china pressurized water reactor, the research work is conducted from the hereafter aspects, the pressure control strategy of the primary hydrostatic test, scheme design of the overpressure protection system, commissioning and site application. And it is also applied in the primary hydrostatic test of a nuclear power plant. The practical results show that the implementation principle of the overpressure protection system is correct, the analysis of risks and various countermeasures is appropriate, and the implementation scheme is feasible. The research work and practice can provide some reference for the subsequent project construction.

Abstract:Low pressure reactor is a small size advanced reactor with power of 180 MWt, which is under development at Nuclear Power Institute of China. In order to assess the ability and feasibility of passive safety system, several tests have been implemented on the passive safety system (PSS) test facility. During the LOCA and SBO accident, the adequate core cooling is provided by the performance of passive safety system. In addition the best-estimate thermal hydraulic code, CATHARE V2.1, has been assessed against cold leg LOCA test. The calculation results show that CATHARE is in a satisfactory agreement with the test for the steady state and transient test.

Abstract:The reactor protection system (RPS) used in the 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor is the first digital RPS designed and operated in China. In order to ensure its safety and reliability and to reduce the development risk and cost, some measures had to be taken. The measures adopted in the development process include the architecture of defense-in-depth, commercial grade hardware, prototype development model, separation of safety class software and non-safety class software, deterministic behavior of safety software, etc. The measures adopted in the verification and validation (V&V) process include effective dedication on the commercial grade hardware, emphasis on the assessment of the requirements and specifications, emphasis on the demonstration and testing, thorough testing for the safety function, long period demonstration operation, application of automatic test system to improve the efficiency of V&V processes, etc. As a result, this first digital RPS has passed the safety assessment of the National Nuclear Safety Authority. Its performance and safety are proven to be confident and assuring through the demonstration and testing. Thus, the design and V&V process of the first digital protection system in China was successful.

Abstract:As the development of the nuclear industry, passive technology turns out to be a remarkable characteristic of advanced nuclear power plants. Since the 20th century, much effort has been given to the passive technology, and a number of evolutionary passive systems have developed. Thoughts have been given to upgrade the existing reactors with passive systems to meet stricter safety demands. In this paper, the CPR1000 plant, which is one kind of mature pressurized water reactor plants in China, is improved. with some passive systems to enhance safety. The passive systems selected are as follows: (1) the reactor makeup tank (RMT); (2) the advanced accumulator (A-ACC); (3) the in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST); (4) the passive emergency feed water system (PEFS), which is installed on the secondary side of SGs; (5) the passive depressurization system (PDS). Although these passive components is based on the passive technology of some advanced reactors, their structural and trip designs are adjusted specifically so that it could be able to mitigate accidents of the CPR1000. Utilizing the RELAP5/MOD3.3 code, accident analyses (small break loss of coolant accident, large break loss of coolant accident, main feed water line break accident) of this improved CPR1000 plant were presented to demonstrate three different accident mitigation methods of the safety system and to test whether the passive safety system preformed its function well. In the SBLOCA, all components of the passive safety system were put into work sequentially, which prevented the core uncover. The LBLOCA analysis illustrates the contribution of the A-ACCs whose small-flow-rate injection can control the maximum cladding temperature effectively. In the MFLB, due to the proper design of the PEFSs, the PRZ was not overfilled by water so that no liquid leakage to the containment happened. Massive radiation release was prevented. Generally speaking, the passive safety system functions as expected, and the three accident mitigation method were proved to be useful for mitigating corresponding accidents. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Emergency Passive Safety System (EPSS) is an innovative design to improve reliability of nuclear power plants. In this work, the EPSS consists of secondary passive residual heat removal system (PRHRS) and the reactor Core Makeup Tank (CMT) system. The PRHRS, which has been studied in our previous paper, can effectively remove the core residual heat and passively improve the inherent safety by passive methods. The designed CMT, representing the safety improvement for CPR1000, is used to inject cool boron-containing water into the primary system during the loss of coolant accident. In this study, the behaviors of EPSS and transient characteristics of the primary loop system during the Steam Generator Tube Rupture (SGTR) accident are investigated using the nuclear reactor thermal hydraulic code RELAP5/MOD3.4. The results show that the designed CMT can protect the reactor primary loop from boiling and maintain primary loop coolant in single phase state. Both PRHRS and CMT operation ensures reactor safety during the SGTR accident. Results reported in this paper show that the designed CMT is a further safety improvement for CPR1000.

In modifying the passive safety system, it is found that the actuation conditions of the passive safety system and the accident assumptions bring great effects on the accidental mitigation. It is necessary to study the influence induced by them. In this paper, the transient phenomenon of SGTR is analyzed to show the process in the modification of the actuation conditions and the assumptions. Finally, the most proper assumptions and actuation conditions are determined. Through the sensitivity analysis, it is found that the RMTs' and PEFSs' behaviors bring a great impact on the accident transient. The strong mutual effect between each passive safety component in the SGTR is the reason of choosing this accident to analyze in this paper.

Abstract:This paper describes the preliminary safety analysis of the Chinese Supercritical water cooled Reactor (CSR1000), which is proposed by Nuclear Power Institute of China (NPIC). The two-pass core design applied to CSR1000 decreases the fuel cladding temperature and flattens the power distribution of the core at normal operation condition. Each fuel assembly is made up of four sub-assemblies with downward-flow water rods, which is favorable to the core cooling during abnormal conditions due to the large water inventory of the water rods. Additionally, a passive safety system is proposed for CSR1000 to increase the safety reliability at abnormal conditions. In this paper, accidents of "pump seizure", "loss of coolant flow accidents (LOFA)", "core depressurization", as well as some typical transients are analysed with code SCTRAN, which is a one-dimensional safety analysis code for SCWRs. The results indicate that the maximum cladding surface temperatures (MCST), which is the most important safety criterion, of the both passes in the mentioned incidents are all below the safety criterion by a large margin. The sensitivity analyses of the delay time of RCPs trip in "loss of offsite power" and the delay time of RMT actuation in "loss of coolant flowrate" were also included in this paper. The analyses have shown that the core design of CSR1000 is feasible and the proposed passive safety system is capable of mitigating the consequences of the selected abnormalities. Abstract:Reactor Protection System (RPS) is one of the most important systems in instrumentation and control systems of Nuclear Power Plants (NPP). Research of RPS reliability is a hot topic in the field of NPP safety and reliability. Since there are lots of equipment in a RPS and there are complex relationships among the equipment, traditional reliability methods, such as fault tree analysis and Markov chain theory, have many limitations in the research of RPS reliability. This paper takes a preliminary research of RPS reliability based on Monte Carlo Methods. To simulate the behavior of every equipment in a RPS, Monte Carlo Method would get system reliability with considering all static and dynamic characters of the RPS. Standard Monte Carlo Method needs huge calculation power to simulate a high reliable system, and we study biased techniques to reduce the variance and improve the simulation efficiency during the research of RPS reliability.
Unit Testing during the Development of Digital Reactor Protection System of HTR-PM

Abstract:Reactor Protection System (RPS) of High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Pebble bed Module (HTR-PM) is the first digital RPS designed and to be operated in the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) of China, and its development process has receives a lot of concerns around the world. As a 1E-level safety system, the RPS has to be designed and developed following a series of nuclear laws and technical disciplines including software verification and validation (software V&V). Software V&V process demonstrates whether all stages during the software development are performed correctly, completely, accurately, and consistently, and the results of each stage are testable. Software testing is one of the most significant and time-consuming effort during software V&V. In this paper, we give a comprehensive introduction to the software unit testing during the development of RPS in HTR-PM. We first introduce the objective of the testing for our project in the aspects of static testing, black-box testing, and whitebox testing. Then the testing techniques, including static testing and dynamic testing, are explained, and the testing strategy we employed is also introduced. We then introduce the principles of three kinds of coverage criteria we used including statement coverage, branch coverage, and the modified condition/decision coverage. As a 1E-level safety software, testing coverage needs to be up to 100% mandatorily. Then we talk the details of safety software testing during software development in HTR-PM, including the organization, methods and tools, testing stages, and testing report. The test result and experiences are shared and finally we draw a conclusion for the unit testing process. The introduction of this paper can contribute to improve the process of unit testing and software development for other digital instrumentation and control systems in NPPs.

Abstract:The core residual heat removal system of the pressurized water reactor (PWR) is a vital facility to ensure the reactor safety, and its failure after shutdown will inevitably lead to the meltdown of the core. However, the existing core residual heat removal system of CPR1000 only guarantee the 72-hour grace period, after which the core decay heat can still melt the core within one day. The present study proposes an improved design of passive residual heat removal system (PRHRS) that utilizes natural forces to realize a passive self-start. Meanwhile, an innovative method is also proposed to use the atmosphere as the final heat sink in this paper. Subsequently a numerical study is conducted to verify the performance of the improved design during accident condition. Numerical results show that the improved design of PRHRS maintains a timeless safety cooling capacity during the station blackout (SBO) scenario. Finally, the parameter sensitivity study is performed to investigate a reasonable design value of chimney height. And numerical results prove that the proposed PRHRS is still capable of removing the core residual heat continuously even if the atmosphere temperature is variable. All component functions of new designed PRHRS are completely driven only by the action of natural factors without any external energy power. Therefore, the improved design of PRHRS can actually eliminate the risk of severe accident and lays the necessary technical foundation for the faster and larger-scale development of PWR.
Reliability Assessment for a Safety-Related Digital Reactor Protection System Using Event-Tree/Fault-Tree (ET/FT) Method

Abstract:The aim of this study is to verify if the reliability of a digital four-channel RPS under the design phase satisfies the specified target and to identify the weakness of system design and potential solutions for system reliability improvement. The event-tree/fault-tree (ET/FT), which is the method used in the current probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) framework of nuclear power plants (NPPs), was adopted to developed reliability modeling for the RPS with the Top Events defined as the system failure to generate reactor trip signal and the system generating spurious trip signal. The evaluation results indicate that the probability of the system failure on demand and the frequency of spurious trip signal generation are 1.47 × 10−6 with a 95% upper bound of 4.63 × 10−6 and 7.94 × 10−4/year with a 95% upper bound of 2.50 × 10−3/year, respectively. The importance and sensitivity analyses were conducted and it was found that undetected unsafe common cause failures (CCFs) of signal conditioning modules (SCMs) dominate the system reliability. Two preliminary optimization schemes relative to reducing periodic test interval and adapting two kinds of diverse SCMs were proposed. Results of the quantitive evaluation of the schemes show that neither of them could determinedly improve the system reliability to the target level. In the future, more detailed optimization analysis shall be required to determine a feasible system design optimization scheme.

Abstract:The Integral Inherently Safe Light Water Reactor ((IS)-S-2-LWR) is a novel reactor design concept which aims at delivering an electric power output level comparable to that of large LWRs (approximately 1000 MWe), while at the same time achieving an overall level of safety that is enhanced with respect to large Generation III+ LWRs. One of the main safety goals is to achieve indefinite cooling following design basis accidents (DBAs) using atmosphere air as ultimate heat sink. In order to accommodate these goals, the (IS)-S-2-LWR incorporates several innovative safety features, including an integral Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV), enhanced passive Decay Heat Removal (DHR) systems and several containment passive cooling systems. The present work is focused on a passive and reliable containment design, which plays a significant role in LOCA scenario and is the last boundary to prevent the release of radioactivity to the environment. In this paper, several innovative passive systems located in the (IS)-S-2-LWR containment are proposed, including Core Make-up Tank (CMT), Accumulator (ACC), Passive Suppression System (PSS), Automatic Depressurization System (ADS), Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) and Passive Reactor Cavity Cooling System (PRCCS). The best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code RELAP5 has been used to model the (IS)-S-2-LWR RPV and containment passive systems. The inadvertent opening of PORV (Power Operated Relief Valve) accident scenario has been simulated in order to study the containment response, including the coupling between RPV and containment. The results show that, through the activation of the ADS, pressure equilibrium between containment and reactor pressure vessel is achieved, while maintaining the reactor core covered at all times. The containment passive cooling systems ensure that the containment pressure remains at acceptable levels throughout the transient. A sensitivity study on the number of operating ADS valves, and on the availability of accumulators is also performed. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:A high-temperature gas-cooled reactor-pebble bed module (HTR-PM), as a demonstration nuclear power plant (NPP), is now under construction in the Shandong province of China. The reactor protection system (RPS) in an HTR-PM is a safety-related system and is mainly in charge of monitoring safety-related parameters according to the reactor protection requirements. Thus, an RPS is very important to operations during the entire life cycle of an NPP. An RPS for an HTR-PM is completely designed and developed in China, which owns all intellectual property rights. Traditionally, the reliability of an RPS is evaluated based on a failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA) and a fault tree analysis (FTA), which are static methods and cannot reflect the reliability of the system's dynamics. In this paper, we propose a dynamic reliability model for the RPS in an HTR-PM based on the Markov chain theory. Using this model, all states and their dynamic transition processes, especially the degradation process from a 2-out-of-4 structure to a 2-out-of-3 structure, are all determined. Moreover, based on this proposed model, an optimal surveillance test interval can be determined.

Abstract:Digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems, such as digital Reactor Protection System (RPS), are being employed gradually at newly-built and upgraded Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). The reliability analysis of digital I&C system turns to be a research focus. This paper proposes a preliminary study on reliability analysis for the digital RPS of High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor-Pebble bed Module (HTR-PM). We first introduce the function and structure of RPS in HTR-PM; then the processes of failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) at system level are given; finally we present the FMEA of a computer device as an example and introduce the future work. This study analyses all possible safety-relevant implications arising from failures in RPS and promotes the reliability analysis of the digital RPS in HTR-PM.

Abstract:An innovative passive safety system design concept for CPR 1000 nuclear power plant (NPP), proposed based on the original passive residual heat removal system (PRHRS) design, is presented and studied in this paper. The new type PRHRS avoids use of trigger valve inside the containment and adds an external water tank as the trip of PRHRS operation. The new design concept can realize functions of system remote control and trigger, while the external water tank can provide emergency water for steam generator (SG) in case of loss of feed water accident. Also, the advantages to use a valve and a tank located externally to containment are including the more reliability in implementing valve in pipes at low pressure, possibility operating manually the valve to start the system, refilling the tank in case of long time cooling and maintaining the valve easily. Best-estimate transient simulation code Relap5/MOD3.4 is applied to study the behavior of new design PRHRS and transient characteristics of primary loop system during normal condition and accident conditions. The transient processes of Station Black-Out (SBO) and Feed-water Line Break (FLB) accidents are studied to verify the function of new design PRHRS. Results show that the effect of valve position change from inside to outside containment can be ignored for the new design PRHRS in normal operation and the external valve can trip the operation of PRHRS in case of accidents. The new design PRHRS can remove core residual heat from primary loop effectively through establishing the stable natural circulations in the primary loop and PRHRS loop when the SBO and FLB accidents occur. It also can supply the emergency water to the SG in the event of FLB accident and realize safe reactor shutdown. Results indicate that the new design concept PRHRS in this work is potential and successful in future application. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A new SCWR conceptual design (mixed spectrum supercritical water cooled reactor: SCWR-M) is proposed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). R&D activities covering core design, safety system design and code development of SCWR-M are launched at SJTU. Safety system design and analysis is one of the key tasks during the development of SCWR-M. Considering the current advanced reactor design, a new passive safety system for SCWR-M including isolation cooling system (ICS), accumulator injection system (ACC), gravity driven cooling system (GDCS) and automatic depressurization system (ADS) is proposed. Based on the modified and preliminarily assessed system code ATHLET-SC, loss of coolant accident (LOCA) analysis for hot and cold leg is performed in this paper. Three different break sizes are analyzed to clarify the hot and cold LOCA characteristics of the SCWR-M. The influence of the break location and break size on the safety performance of SCWR-M is also concluded. Several measures to induce the core coolant flow and to mitigate core heating up are also discussed. Abstract:For long-term application, Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA) has proved to be a valuable tool for improving the safety and reliability of power reactors. In China, "Nuclear safety and radioactive pollution prevention "Twelfth Five Year Plan" and the 2020 vision" raises clearly that: to develop probabilistic safety analysis and aging evaluation for research reactors. Comparing with the power reactors, it reveals some specific features in research reactors: lower operating power, lower coolant temperature and pressure, etc. However, the core configurations may be changed very often and human actions play an important safety role in research reactors due to its specific experimental requirement. As a result, there is a necessary to conduct the PSA analysis of research reactors. This paper discusses the special characteristics related to the structure and operation and the methods to develop the PSA of research reactors, including initiating event analysis, event tree analysis, fault tree analysis, dependent failure analysis, human reliability analysis and quantification as well as the experimental and external event evaluation through the investigation of various research reactors and their PSAs home and abroad, to provide the current situation and features of research reactors PSAs.
