Abstract:Chemically synthesized metal nanowires are promising building blocks for next-generation photonic integrated circuits, but technological implementation in monolithic integration will be severely hampered by the lack of controllable and precise manipulation approaches, due to the strong adhesion of nanowires to substrates in non-liquid environments. Here, we demonstrate this obstacle can be removed by our proposed earthworm-like peristaltic crawling motion mechanism, based on the synergistic expansion, friction, and contraction in plasmon-driven metal nanowires in non-liquid environments. The evanescently excited surface plasmon greatly enhances the heating effect in metal nanowires, thereby generating surface acoustic waves to drive the nanowires crawling along silica microfibres. Advantages include sub-nanometer positioning accuracy, low actuation power, and self-parallel parking. We further demonstrate on-chip manipulations including transporting, positioning, orientation, and sorting, with on-situ operation, high selectivity, and great versatility. Our work paves the way to realize full co-integration of various functionalized photonic components on single chips.
Thermally Induced Transfiguration of Polymer Nanowires under Irradiation of Electron Beams

Abstract:Polymer nanowires were found to respond to external perturbations and to undergo transfiguration upon exposure to the irradiation of high-flux electron beams. The phenomenon is general, observable in the nanowires of conjugated and nonconjugated polymers with linear and hyperbranched structures. The transfiguration ceased to occur after the nanowires had been annealed at temperatures higher than the glass transition temperatures of the polymers. The phenomenon is rationalized to be associated with the residual internal stress in the nanowires that is relieved through the electron-beam irradiation and/or thermal annealing. This work thus offers cautionary advice that a proper annealing treatment should be exercised, if one wishes to fabricate polymer nanostructures and miniature devices with reliable stability and durable performance.
Thermal Management for Purification of Aligned Arrays of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Based on Thermocapillary Flow by Pulsed Heating

Abstract:Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (s-SWNT) arrays attract much attention due to the ideal configuration for high performance electronics. A recent approach based on the nanoscale thermocapillary flow enabled the achievement of aligned arrays of highly purified s-SWNTs by removing the metallic SWNTs (m-SWNTs) in as-grown arrays by direct pulsed current injection. Thermal management of this process is critically important since the cumulative heating from the m-SWNT array yields a high temperature increase to cause the difficult control of thermocapillary flow. In this paper, an analytical heat transfer model combining a two-dimensional transient thermal model and a three-dimensional steady state thermal model is established for predicting the temperature increase of the SWNT array under a pulsed current injection with a period step function. The analytical predictions agree well with three-dimensional finite element analysis. Effects of parameters (such as duty cycle, period, spacing, etc.) on the temperature distributions and the maximum temperature increase are investigated systematically. These results can help guide the purification process to reduce the adverse thermal effects to obtain highly purified s-SWNTs.
Photothermal Modulation of Propagating Surface Plasmons on Silver Nanowires

Abstract:Nanoplasmonic devices have received much attention in recent years due to their ability to confine light beyond the diffraction limit. Manipulating the propagation of surface plasmons (SPs) is of vital importance for the creation of nanometer-scale integrated photonic devices. In this work we exploit the photothermal property of a silver nanowire (NW) to optically modulate the propagation of SPs on it. Under the excitation of a control laser beam, the rise of local temperature induced by the photothermal effect of silver NW results in the dramatic increase or decrease of the intensity of the transmitted SPs generated by a probe laser beam, depending on the Fabry-Perot resonance conditions of the SPs on the NW. The amplitude of the photothermal modulation depth is found to be strongly dependent on the focal position, polarization, and power of the control beam. The simulations reveal that the high modulation depth at the NW end is mainly caused by the additional heat generated by the propagating SPs on the NW. The analytical solutions for the transmissivity and modulation depth are presented. Both numerical simulations and theoretical analysis agree well with the experimental results. Our work provides not only a new kind of all-optical modulation method for the propagating SPs in ultracompact plasmonic devices, but also the basic understanding about the influence of environmental temperature on the propagating SPs.
Active Control of Thermal Conductivity of Low-Dimensional Α -Pbs by Strain-Induced Ferroelectric

Abstract:Active control of heat transfer in nanostructured materials is crucial for the development of microelectronic devices. Thermal switch is a typical heat management device, which has attracted widespread attention. In this work, based on first-principles calculations, we propose a two-dimensional thermal switch based on the strain-induced ferroelectric phase transition in α-PbS. It is found that thermal conductivity can be significantly reduced by external strain and a room temperature two-dimensional thermal switch with a switch ratio of 3.7 can be constructed. The calculated phonon lifetime and scattering rate reveal that phonons around 2 THz frequency range predominantly contribute to the modulation in thermal conductivity when the strain is smaller than 2.0%. A detailed analysis on phonon dispersion indicates that these phonons are LO2 and TO3 branches. When the strain is larger than 2.0%, the decrease in phonon group velocity leads to the reduction in thermal conductivity. Our work elucidates the mechanisms for changes in the thermal conductivity of α-PbS under strain and provides a low-dimensional thermal switch, which is promising for future applications in microelectronic devices.

Abstract:MoS nanowires are emerging as key building blocks for flexible devices and are competitive with carbon nanotubes due to easier separation and functionalization. Here, it is reported the phonon thermal conductivity () of MoS nanowires molecular dynamics simulations. It shows a large tunability of low-frequency phonon thermal conductivity ()Amax from 27.2-191 W (m K), an increase of around 702% mechanical strain. Below critical tension/torsion strain, their phonon thermal conductivity monotonically reduces/enlarges; whereas above this value, an inverse trend is identified. On the other hand, MoS nanowires show unusual auxetic behavior. The transitions involved in phonon thermal conductivity are molecularly illustrated by a strain-induced crossover in bond configurations and are explained based on a competition mechanism between phonon scattering and group velocity. This study provides insights into the thermal transport and auxetic properties of low-dimensional structures and the thermal management of MoS nanowire-based systems.

Abstract:A plasmonic trimer composed of three closely packed identical gold nanospheres for manipulating nanoscale temperature distribution is proposed. It is shown that heat can be unevenly distributed among the three particles, creating a high temperature gradient in the nanoscale space despite the strong thermalization effect. Moreover, the difference in temperature increment among the particles is sensitive to the polarization of incident light and can be continuously tuned. The dependence of the achievable temperature difference on the trimer parameters is also investigated. The ability of nanoscale selective heating provides a possible way of remotely manipulating the nanoscale thermally induced physical or chemical processes with unprecedented spatial precision.
Nanowire shish-kebab structures and molecular orientation control of all-conjugated diblock copolymers.

Abstract:Herein we propose a facile strategy to prepare nanowires and nanowire "shish-kebab" (NWSK) structures by controlling the crystallization behavior of all-conjugated rod-rod diblock copolymers poly[(p-phenylene)-block-(3-hexylthiophene)]s (PPP-b-P3HT (BmTn)) with varying main chain lengths. Depending on the block length and ratio (i.e., PPP/P3HT, abbreviated as B/T), nanowires with low B/T ratios (copolymers with long P3HT blocks; B8T32 and B14T34) and NWSKs with high B/T ratios (copolymers with long PPP blocks; B29T9 and B39T18) were formed for PPP-b-P3HT all-conjugated diblock copolymers. The formation of nanowires is governed by a strong interchain π-π stacking similar to the P3HT homopolymer, with an edge-on orientation of the P3HT moiety, whereas NWSKs are formed as a result of the particular face-on molecular orientation of PPP moiety. As the length of the P3HT moiety was increased (the block ratio of PPP/P3HT reduced), the NWSKs were transformed into nanowires gradually because of the decreasing density of "kebabs". For diblock copolymers with high PPP/P3HT ratios, the transition of the molecular orientation from face-on to edge-on was obtained by thermal annealing.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes are superb materials for nanoscale thermal management and phononic devices applications, due to their extremely high thermal conductivity (3000-6600 W/mK) and quasi-one-dimensional geometry. However, the presence of interfaces between individual carbon nanotubes as found widely in nanocomposites, nanoelectronics, and nanodevices severely limits their performance for larger scale applications. Solving this issue requires a deep understanding of the heat transfer mechanism at this nanoscale interface between low-dimensional structures, where conventional models developed for interfaces in bulk materials do not apply. Here we address this challenge through a bottom-up approach based on atomistic simulations. We demonstrate that the huge thermal resistance of carbon nanotube junctions can be significantly improved through modifying the molecular structure at the interface to enhance both the matching of phonon spectra and phonon mode coupling. Specifically, two approaches based on polymerwrapping and metal coatings are investigated here and have shown to improve both the structural stability and interfacial thermal conductivity of carbon nanotube junctions. By properly designing the interface molecular structure between individual carbon nanotubes, significant performance gains up to a factor of 4 can be achieved. These results pave the way for future designs of thermal management networks and phononic devices with thermally transparent and structurally stable interfaces.

Abstract:<p>Thermal management has become a promising field in recent years due to the limitation of energy resources and the global warming. An important topic in improving the efficiency of thermal energy utilization is how to control the flows of heat, and thermal rectifiers, such as the thermal transistor, have been proposed as units for modulating the flow of heat. In this work, a reconfigurable non-contact thermal transistor with two-dimensional grating is introduced. The thermal transistor consists of three parts: source, gate, and drain, with the gate working around the phase-transition temperature of vanadium dioxide, a type of phase-transition material. Results show that the unit has a clear transistor-like behavior. The surface phonon/plasmon polaritons supported by the insulating/metallic states that contribute to the radiative thermal transport can be modulated at a nanoscale separation. And the dynamic amplification factor varies from 12.8 to 26.7 when the stretchable polydimethylsiloxane is subjected to tension or compression. This work sheds light on studies about the controllable small-scale thermal transport due to mechanical deformations.</p>

Carbon Nanocone: A Promising Thermal Rectifier

Abstract:With molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate very obvious thermal rectification in large temperature range from 200 to 400 K in nanocone. We also observe that the rectification of nanocone does not depend on the length very sensitively, which is in stark contrast with the nanotube thermal rectifier in which the rectification decreases dramatically as the length increases. Our work demonstrates that carbon nanocone is a promising practical phononic device.

Abstract:The interface engineering between carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a key to enhance the thermal conductivity of CNT assembled materials to match the trend of microelectronics miniaturization. In this study, according to the experimental finding of polymer-promoted CNT intertube heat transport, we reveal that there is a strong dependence of heat conductance on the orientation of polymer chain, corresponding to an effect of thermal switch knob. When the soft long-chain polyethylene molecular chains are placed in the grooves on both sides of two parallel CNTs at θ = 30 –60 ∘ , flattening deformation will occur at the CNT contacts, and multi-point enhancement of vibrational density of states in 2.5–12 THz frequency range and a redshift of 3 THz for the frequencies are observed. These two phenomena point to a strong enhancement of the phonon coupling at the CNT contact, which is verified by 120% boost of the interfacial thermal conductance for the across-tube thermal transport.

Abstract:The ability to efficiently and reliably transfer heat between sources and sinks is often a bottleneck in the thermal management of modern energy conversion technologies ranging from microelectronics to thermoelectric power generation. These interfaces contribute parasitic thermal resistances that reduce device performance and are subjected to thermomechanical stresses that degrade device lifetime. Dense arrays of vertically aligned metal nanowires (NWs) offer the unique combination of thermal conductance from the constituent metal and mechanical compliance from the high aspect ratio geometry to increase interfacial heat transfer and device reliability. In the present work, we synthesize copper NW arrays directly onto substrates via templated electrodeposition and extend this technique through the use of a sacrificial overplating layer to achieve improved uniformity. Furthermore, we infiltrate the array with an organic phase change material and demonstrate the preservation of thermal properties. We use the 3ω method to measure the axial thermal conductivity of freestanding copper NW arrays to be as high as 70 W m(-1) K(-1), which is more than an order of magnitude larger than most commercial interface materials and enhanced-conductivity nanocomposites reported in the literature. These arrays are highly anisotropic, and the lateral thermal conductivity is found to be only 1-2 W m(-1) K(-1). We use these measured properties to elucidate the governing array-scale transport mechanisms, which include the effects of morphology and energy carrier scattering from size effects and grain boundaries.

Abstract:Thermal rectification is a fundamental phenomenon for active heat flow control. Significant thermal rectification is expected to exist in the asymmetric nanostructures, such as nanowires and thin films. As a one-atom-thick membrane, graphene has attracted much attention for realizing thermal rectification as shown by many molecular dynamics simulations. Here, we experimentally demonstrate thermal rectification in various asymmetric monolayer graphene nanostructures. A large thermal rectification factor of 26% is achieved in a defect-engineered monolayer graphene with nanopores on one side. A thermal rectification factor of 10% is achieved in a pristine monolayer graphene with nanoparticles deposited on one side or with a tapered width. The results indicate that the monolayer graphene has great potential to be used for designing high-performance thermal rectifiers for heat flow control and energy harvesting.
Thermal Rectification At The Bimaterial Nanocontact Interface

Abstract:Thermal rectification can help develop modern thermal manipulation devices but has been rarely engineered. Here, we validated the nanoscale bimaterial interface-induced thermal rectification experimentally for the first time and investigated its underlying mechanism via molecular dynamics simulations. The thermal diode consists of polyamide (PA) and silicon (Si) nanowires in contact with each other. The thermal rectification ratio measured by a high-precision nanoscale experiment reached 4% with an uncertainty of < 1%. The temperature has little influence on the ratio, while the decrease in contact length or increase in temperature differences can increase the ratio. The molecular dynamics simulations further confirmed the thermal rectification in the PA/Si nanowires. We found that the localized modes generally gather on the edge, and the higher extent of phonon localization is responsible for the lower thermal conductance in the thermal rectification. Our findings not only have guiding significance, but can also promote the development of interface-based solid-state thermal diodes.
Manipulation of Helicity-Dependent Photocurrent and Stokes Parameter Detection in Topological Insulator Bi2Te3 Nanowires.

Abstract:Helicity-dependent photocurrent (HDPC) and its modulation in topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanowires have been investigated. It is revealed that when the incident plane of a laser is perpendicular to the nanowire, the HDPC is an odd function of the incident angle, which is mainly contributed by the circular photogalvanic effect originating from the surface states of Bi2Te3 nanowire. When the incident plane of a laser is parallel to the nanowire, the HDPC is approximately an even function of the incident angle, which is due to the circular photon drag effect coming from the surface states. It is found that the HDPC can be effectively tuned by the back gate and the ionic liquid top gate. By analyzing the substrate dependence of the HDPC, we find that the HDPC of the Bi2Te3 nanowire on the Si substrate is an order of magnitude larger than that on SiO2, which may be due to the spin injection from the Si substrate to the Bi2Te3 nanowire. In addition, by applying different biases, the Stokes parameters of a polarized light can be extracted by arithmetic operation of the photocurrents measured in the Bi2Te3 nanowire. This work suggests that topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanowires may provide a good platform for opto-spintronic devices, especially in chirality and polarimtry detection.

Abstract:The ability to engineer the thermal conductivity of materials allows us to control the flow of heat and derive novel functionalities such as thermal rectification, thermal switching and thermal cloaking. While this could be achieved by making use of composites and metamaterials at bulk length-scales, engineering the thermal conductivity at micro- and nano-scale dimensions is considerably more challenging. In this work, we show that the local thermal conductivity along a single Si nanowire can be tuned to a desired value (between crystalline and amorphous limits) with high spatial resolution through selective helium ion irradiation with a well-controlled dose. The underlying mechanism is understood through molecular dynamics simulations and quantitative phonon-defect scattering rate analysis, where the behaviour of thermal conductivity with dose is attributed to the accumulation and agglomeration of scattering centres at lower doses. Beyond a threshold dose, a crystalline-amorphous transition was observed.

Heat Conduction Rectification In Nanostructure With Step Change In Cross-Section

Abstract:Heat conduction rectifier is attracting more attention due to its potential application to process thermal currents independently and convert them into electronic signals. This work reports an investigation by molecular dynamics simulation on the heat conduction rectification effect in the nanostructure whose cross-section have step change along the heat flux. It is found that thermal resistance is different with reversed heat flux direction, which is called the heat conduction rectification. The heat conduction rectification depends on the temperature difference. By reducing temperature difference across the nanostructure, the rectification could be reversed. When the temperature difference is small enough, the thermal resistance is larger when the heat flux flows from the thick part to the thin part when the length of the structure is about 10 nm. The larger variation in the cross-section leads the larger difference in the thermal resistance with opposite heat flux. The mechanism of the rectification is discussed. If we take phonons as liquid particles and consider the case of a liquid flowing through a channel with step expansion in cross-section, the flow resistance is less with liquid flowing from the narrow part to the wide part than that in the case with contrary flow direction. In fact, the scattering of phonons at the step face reduces the mean free path of phonon when heat flux conducts from the narrow end to the wide end.

Abstract:Because of their resolvable crystal structure, organic conjugated small molecules are intrinsically ideal for elucidating the relationship between microstructures and charge transport properties. It has been reported that the charge transport properties depend on molecular structure and molecular packing. In the solid state, π–π stacking of small molecules is significant in the charge transport process. Since π–π stacking of conjugated small molecules is influenced at different degrees by other intra- and intermolecular interactions, as a result, π–π stacking and further the charge transport properties can be controlled or tuned by crystal engineering through precise chemical modification. In this perspective, we give some typical examples illustrating the strategy of controlling π–π stacking in single crystals. Furthermore, we attempt to clarify the complex relationship between π–π stacking and other types of molecular interactions, and its influence on charge transport properties.
Thermal Rectification in Silicon Nanowires with Mass Gradients

Abstract:Thermal rectification as a new phenomenon is attracting great attention. Thermal rectification in silicon nanowires with axial mass gradient is investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. The results of the simulations show that the thermal conductivities are different for the heat flux with opposite directions. The rectification efficiency becomes larger when the mass gradient increases. The effect of temperature gradient on the thermal rectification is also considered. The phonon density of states is calculated to explain the phenomenon. It is found that the interface is responsible to the thermal rectification.
