Abstract:In traditional Chinese culture, Exorcising mask is an intuitive artistic symbol of China's intangible cultural heritage and contains unique national characteristics. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to explore design methods for analyzing and classifying public needs, and through the combination of artistic design and digital platform to realize the innovative design and application of Exorcising mask technology, so as to effectively promote the protection, dissemination and innovation of traditional Exorcising mask craftsmanship. The research method is to establish a user emotional demand model for Exorcising mask products from the three levels of instinct, behavior and reflection of the emotional design theory, and use the KANO model to perform data verification and function sorting on the established model, and design new digital platforms and traditional images based on the analysis results. The research conclusion is that the combination of design and technology achieves a diversified approach to traditional handicrafts. The design method of analyzing and classifying public needs using the KANO model can accurately discover the real emotional needs of the public, and provide direction and data support for the design of traditional Exorcising mask art products.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for synthesizing the facial make-ups in Peking Opera.By the method,we first classify most of existing patterns in the facial make-ups into different types according to their semantic meaning and abstract feature points associated with these patterns.Then we construct a bank of vectorised patterns by Bézier curve interpolation based on those feature points.During the synthesis phase,users pick up required patterns from the pattern bank and compose them to form new facial make-ups.Our system offers a set of tools that allow users flexible control over the shape,size and orientation of patterns.Users may also interpolate different patterns to obtain new ones and use them in the new facial make-ups.Potential applications of the system include decoration design,digital entertainment and education of Peking Opera etc.

Abstract:One of the most popular folk operas in China is the Nuo opera. Nuo opera, which is distinguished by its distinct elements such as vicious masks, peculiar clothing and jewelry, peculiar language spoken during performances, and enigmatic scenarios, has been named one of China's intangible cultural legacies. The opera is a religious act that is fundamental to the Chinese folk religion known as Nuoism. Nuo opera is performed to ward off evil spirits, illnesses, and other influences. It also serves as a prayer request to the gods for favors. Nuo opera features singing and dancing, as well as masks and costumes for the performers. This research explores Nuo opera, a traditional performance art form that is deeply established in the cultural and social structure of Guizhou using a cross-disciplinary technique that unites art and culture. Sociocultural influence, the study examines how, in a setting that is changing quickly, Nuo Opera acts as an interface for social unity and cultural continuity. The distinct features that this culture exhibits, together with the numerous benefits that the society's sustained growth has brought subsequent such as cultural, social, and economic values, among other significant elements. This study emphasizes interdisciplinary analysis, and its goals are to improve our understanding of the cultural value of Nuo Opera and provide useful insights for ensuring its persistent presence and significance in Guizhou society.

Abstract:Qin opera culture has a long history in China for thousands of years. It is the ancestor of Chinese opera. However, with the development of modern technology and the rise of new media, the protection and inheritance of traditional Qin opera culture is facing a new challenge and opportunity, its costume culture is the same. This paper analyzes the style and structure of Qin opera costumes, extracts the colors of the costumes, summarizes the costume patterns, and then uses the three-dimensional (3D) virtual visualization technology to virtually restore the Qin opera costume, and innovates the Qin opera costume. In this paper, twelve sets of traditional Qin opera costumes are virtually restored, and on this basis, the digital protection and innovative design of Qin opera series costumes are carried out, and all the restored costumes are displayed digitally in an all-round way. The combination of Qin opera costume and digital protection extends the application scope of virtual visualization technology and enriches the transmission mode of Qin opera costume. This study inherits and protects the traditional Qin opera costume culture better.

Abstract:The rich development of Chinese traditional art and culture can be manifested in a wide variety of artistic presentations, including Chinese opera, puppet show, shadow play, acrobatic performance and dance, which reflect the life experience and cultural presentation of different historical periods. Among these art forms, Chinese opera has remained its popularity throughout time, and has evolved into a variety of forms, such as Beijing Opera, Kunqu opera, Shaoxing opera, Huangmei opera, and Sichuan opera. In order to explore the cultural value of Chinese opera, this paper discusses the lavishness of Beijing Opera from a design perspective. By exploring the artistic presentation of Beijing Opera, this paper finds that the movement, narration, cue, costume, stage props and masklike facial make-ups (Lianpu) in the performance all has its specific symbolic meanings and aesthetic content. Lines, patterns and color of mask-like facial makeup indicate the traits and dispositions of the characters, such as loyalty, wickedness, righteousness, and evilness, as well as the norms of interpersonal relationships in the Chinese culture and society. However, the technique of mask painting has gradually lost its ground in Chinese community..Therefore, the intriguing mask-like facial makeup, or Lianpu is an artistic technique worthy for modern people to cherish and preserve. This study aims to explore the mask-like facial makeup of Chinese Beijing Opera, analyze the meanings of different masks, establish the designing rules based on expert opinions, and applies such designing rules to fashion design. Followed by its conversion application into fashion accessories bring new insights to the art of Chinese opera and propose image transformation design as reference for culturaland creative design.

Modeling Expressions of Peking Opera Facial Make-Ups

Abstract:This paper presents a framework for modeling expressions of Peking Opera facial make-ups. We first abstract patterns in the facial make-ups by use of flood filling and 8-connected boundary tracing algorithms, and then pick up feature points from abstracted pattern boundaries with the Douglas-Peucker algorithm. A pattern bank is constructed with those feature points corresponding to the forehead patterns, eyebrow patterns, orbit patterns and mouth patterns. During the synthesis phase, users may pick up appropriate patterns from the pattern bank to compose new facial make-ups. Our system reconstructs the original patterns by interpolating corresponding feature points with the spline. Expressions of facial make-ups can be obtained by deforming pattern with the Radial basis function interpolation on either predefined or interactively specified facial feature points. Examples of both synthesized facial make-ups and facial expressions of facial make-ups are given in the paper.

Abstract:Masks, as a cultural phenomenon, are both ordinary and unique in human life, with a long history found in almost every corner of the world. The emergence of Xinlong medicine mud-hidden mask is deeply connected to the lives and spiritual beliefs of the original inhabitants. In 2009, the production technique of Xinlong medicine mud-hidden mask was recognized as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage project in Sichuan Province. However, due to the intricate craftsmanship involved and the difficulty in passing down the skills, this cultural heritage was once on the brink of extinction. This article conducts research through a combination of literature review and field investigation to explore the origins, transmission methods, characteristics, and challenges faced in the transmission of Xinlong medicine mud-hidden mask. It reveals that the complexity of the production process, geographical limitations, and inadequate income for artisans have become the primary factors hindering the inheritance and development of this cultural heritage.

Abstract:Combining the behavioral model of Face-changing Sichuan Opera, one of the traditional local operas, with Augmented Reality(AR) technology, we merge the traditional culture with modern technology and develop the digitalized Face-changing Sichuan Opera system. We design two subsystems based on webcam and Kinect sensor respectively, and in this paper, introduce the related techniques involved in these two subsystems and define the different models of Face-changing. Besides introducing the common model of Face-changing Sichuan Opera, we further develop the Picking Faces and Grabbing Faces models with stronger interactive features. The investigation of users' experiences and system analysis demonstrate good feasibility and expandability of our AR system of Face-changing Sichuan Opera with real-time interaction.

Abstract:The survival and longevity of architectural heritage, especially structures in isolated locations such as ancient opera stages, have been gradually threatened by natural and sociocultural changes over the past few decades. Furthermore, the future of these heritage sites remains uncertain. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to develop a research method, using multidisciplinary knowledge and digital technology, to digitally protect and inherit the endangered heritage of ancient stages. Hence, in this study, we applied a qualitative longitudinal method for digital protection, digital culture inheritance, and data intelligence management. Particularly, digital culture inheritance established the knowledge visualization model, which was used to excavate cultural connotations and was displayed with virtual reality, augmented reality, etc. Furthermore, a GIS digital platform was developed to provide data management and a virtual experience in a 3D-interactive way for culture presentation, cognition, and heritage. Then, the developed method was validated over four years by using the ancient opera stages in Shanxi, China, as case studies. The results demonstrate that this method is feasible in and applicable to the heritages of ancient stages and can be applied to other architectural heritages and even cultural heritages. This method also helps to promote the public's awareness of the protection of cultural heritage, especially the heritages of ancient stages.

Abstract:Yue Opera is known as the second most important national opera in China. The costume is an important part of the performance of Yue Opera, which carries the culture and history of Yue Opera. The purpose of this paper is to attempt a virtual simulation of Yue Opera costumes through an understanding and analysis of Yue Opera costumes, as well as to use the extracted elements related to Yue Opera costumes for modern fashion design based on Yue Opera costume style. The research method of this paper is to draw 12 sets of traditional costumes of Yue Opera by understanding and studying the costume culture of Yue Opera and transform them into a 3D digital virtual presentation of the costumes. The costume elements are then extracted for costume design so that the designed fashions can reflect the cultural characteristics of Yue Opera, and then virtual simulation technology is used for costume display to realize the dissemination of Yue Opera costume culture. The use of three-dimensional virtual simulation technology to digitize costumes contributes to the preservation and dissemination of Yue Opera costume culture. Secondly, the design of modern fashion using the concept of Yue Opera plays a role in the preservation and dissemination of Yue Opera costume culture.
