Abstract:We study holomorphic isometries between bounded symmetric domains with respect to the Bergman metrics up to a normalizing constant. In particular, we first consider a holomorphic isometry from the complex unit ball into an irreducible bounded symmetric domain with respect to the Bergman metrics. In this direction, we show that images of (nonempty) affine-linear sections of the complex unit ball must be the intersections of the image of the holomorphic isometry with certain affine-linear subspaces. We also construct a surjective holomorphic submersion from a certain subdomain of the target bounded symmetric domain onto the complex unit ball such that the image of the holomorphic isometry lies inside the subdomain and the holomorphic isometry is a global holomorphic section of the holomorphic submersion. This construction could be generalized to any holomorphic isometry between bounded symmetric domains with respect to the \emph{canonical Kähler metrics}. Using some classical results for complex-analytic subvarieties of Stein manifolds, we have obtained further geometric results for images of such holomorphic isometries.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study the holomorphicity of totally geodesic Kobayashi isometric embeddings between bounded symmetric domains. First, we show that for a ‐smooth totally geodesic Kobayashi isometric embedding where , are bounded symmetric domains, if is irreducible and or more generally, for any tangent vector of , then is either holomorphic or anti‐holomorphic. Second, we characterize Kobayashi isometries from a reducible bounded symmetric domain to itself.

Geometry of Complex Bounded Domains with Finite-Volume Quotients

Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.
Proper holomorphic maps between bounded symmetric domains with small rank differences

Abstract:In this paper we study the rigidity of proper holomorphic maps $f\colon \Omega\to\Omega'$ between irreducible bounded symmetric domains $\Omega$ and $\Omega'$ with small rank differences: $2\leq \text{rank}(\Omega')< 2\,\text{rank}(\Omega)-1$. More precisely, if either $\Omega$ and $\Omega'$ have the same type or $\Omega$ is of type~III and $\Omega'$ is of type~I, then up to automorphisms, $f$ is of the form $f=\imath\circ F$, where $F = F_1\times F_2\colon \Omega\to \Omega_1'\times \Omega_2'$. Here $\Omega_1'$, $\Omega_2'$ are bounded symmetric domains, the map $F_1\colon \Omega \to \Omega_1'$ is a standard embedding, $F_2: \Omega \to \Omega_2'$, and $\imath\colon \Omega'_1\times \Omega'_2 \to \Omega'$ is a totally geodesic holomorphic isometric embedding. Moreover we show that, under the rank condition above, there exists no proper holomorphic map $f: \Omega \to \Omega'$ if $\Omega$ is of type~I and $\Omega'$ is of type~III, or $\Omega$ is of type~II and $\Omega'$ is either of type~I or III. By considering boundary values of proper holomorphic maps on maximal boundary components of $\Omega$, we construct rational maps between moduli spaces of subgrassmannians of compact duals of $\Omega$ and $\Omega'$, and induced CR-maps between CR-hypersurfaces of mixed signature, thereby forcing the moduli map to satisfy strong local differential-geometric constraints (or that such moduli maps do not exist), and complete the proofs from rigidity results on geometric substructures modeled on certain admissible pairs of rational homogeneous spaces of Picard number 1.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].
Nearly geodesic immersions and domains of discontinuity

Abstract:We study nearly geodesic immersions in higher rank symmetric spaces of non-compact type, which we define as immersions that satisfy a bound on their fundamental form, generalizing the notion of immersions in hyperbolic space with principal curvature in $(-1,1)$. This notion depends on the choice of a flag manifold embedded in the visual boundary, and immersions satisfying this bound admit a natural domain in this flag manifold that comes with a fibration. As an application we give an explicit fibration of some domains of discontinuity for some Anosov representations. Our method can be applied in particular to some $\Theta$-positive representations for each notion of $\Theta$-positivity.

Abstract:In this article, we study local holomorphic isometric embeddings from ${\BB}^n$ into ${\BB}^{N_1}\times... \times{\BB}^{N_m}$ with respect to the normalized Bergman metrics up to conformal factors. Assume that each conformal factor is smooth Nash algebraic. Then each component of the map is a multi-valued holomorphic map between complex Euclidean spaces by the algebraic extension theorem derived along the lines of Mok and Mok-Ng. Applying holomorphic continuation and analyzing real analytic subvarieties carefully, we show that each component is either a constant map or a proper holomorphic map between balls. Applying a linearity criterion of Huang, we conclude the total geodesy of non-constant components.

Abstract:Pulling back complex structures along a branched covering induces a holomorphic isometric embedding of Teichmüller spaces. We show that for dimension at least $2$, all isometric embeddings arise from branched coverings. This generalizes a theorem of Royden. As a consequence we obtain that totally geodesic submanifolds of Teichmüller space, which are isometric to some Teichmüller space, are covering constructions. Another consequence is the classification of locally isometric embeddings of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:Let be a bounded homogeneous domain in . In this note, we give a characterization of the Stein domains in which are invariant under a maximal unipotent subgroup N of . We also exhibit an N-invariant potential of the Bergman metric of , expressed in a Lie theoretical fashion. These results extend the ones previously obtained by the authors in the symmetric case.

A Hilbert metric for bounded symmetric domains

Abstract:Bounded symmetric domains carry several natural invariant metrics, for example the Carathéodory, Kobayashi or the Bergman metric. We define another natural metric, from generalized Hilbert metric defined in [FGW20], by considering the Borel embedding of the domain as an open subset of its dual compact Hermitian symmetric space and then its Harish-Chandra realization in projective spaces. We describe this construction on the four classical families of bounded symmetric domains and compute both this metric and its associated Finsler metric. We compare it to Carathéodory and Bergman metrics and show that, except for the complex hyperbolic space, those metrics differ.

Abstract:Consider a holomorphic map $F: D \to G$ between two domains in ${\mathbb C}^N$. Let $\mathcal F$ denote a family of geodesics for the Kobayashi distance, such that $F$ acts as an isometry on each element of $\mathcal F$. This paper is dedicated to characterizing the scenarios in which the aforementioned condition implies that $F$ is a biholomorphism. Specifically, we establish this when $D$ is a complete hyperbolic domain, and $\mathcal F$ comprises all geodesic segments originating from a specific point. Another case is when $D$ and $G$ are $C^{2+\alpha}$-smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains, and $\mathcal F$ consists of all geodesic rays converging at a designated boundary point of $D$. Furthermore, we provide examples to demonstrate that these assumptions are essentially optimal.

Abstract:We give a new proof for the local existence of a smooth isometric embedding of a smooth $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with nonzero Riemannian curvature tensor into $6$-dimensional Euclidean space. Our proof avoids the sophisticated arguments via microlocal analysis used in earlier proofs. In Part 1, we introduce a new type of system of partial differential equations, which is not one of the standard types (elliptic, hyperbolic, parabolic) but satisfies a property called strong symmetric positivity. Such a PDE system is a generalization of and has properties similar to a system of ordinary differential equations with a regular singular point. A local existence theorem is then established by using a novel local-to-global-to-local approach. In Part 2, we apply this theorem to prove the local existence result for isometric embeddings.

Holomorphic Curves in Moduli Spaces Are Quasi-Isometrically Immersed

Abstract:A holomorphic curve in moduli spaces is the image of a non-constant holomorphic map from a hyperbolic surface $B$ of type $(g,n)$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_h$ of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $h$. We show that, when all peripheral monodromies are of infinite order, the holomorphic map is a quasi-isometric immersion with parameters depending only on $g$, $n$, $h$ and the systole of $B$. When peripheral monodromies also satisfy an additional condition, we find a lift quasi-isometrically embedding a fundamental polygon of the hyperbolic surface $B$ into the Teichmüller space. We further improve the Parshin-Arakelov finiteness theorem, by proving that there are only finitely many monodromy homomorphisms induced by holomorphic curves of type $(g,n)$ in $\mathcal{M}_h$ where systole is bounded away from $0$, up to equivalence.

Abstract:A conjecture of Pasteczka, generalizing the classical Hermite--Hadamard Inequality, states that if $\Omega \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ is a compact convex domain such that $\Omega$ and $\partial \Omega$ have the same center of mass, then for every convex function $f: \Omega \to \mathbb{R}^d$, the average value of $f$ on $\Omega$ is less than or equal to the average value of $f$ on $\partial \Omega$. Pasteczka proved this conjecture for the case where $\Omega$ is a polytope with an inscribed ball. We generalize this result by proving Pasteczka's conjecture in the case where some point lies at most $(d+1)|\Omega|/|\partial \Omega|$ away from all hyperplanes tangent to $\partial \Omega$.

Abstract:In this note, we study the relation between the existence of a negatively curved complete hermitian metric on a complex manifold M and the product structure of (or contained in) M. We introduce the concept of geometric ranks and give a curvature characterization of the rank one manifolds, which generalizes the previous results of P. Yang and N. Mok (see below). In the proof, we used the old techniques of Yau's Schwartz lemma and Cheng-Yau's result on the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a relatively compact $C^2$ domain in a complex manifold $\mathcal M$ of dimension $n$. Assume that $H^{1}(M,\Theta)=0$ where $\Theta$ is the sheaf of germs of holomorphic tangent fields of $M$. Suppose that the Levi-form of the boundary of $M$ has at least 3 negative eigenvalues or at least $n-1$ positive eigenvalues pointwise. We will first construct a homotopy formula for $\Theta$-valued $(0,1)$-forms on $\overline M$. We then apply a Nash-Moser iteration scheme to show that if a formally integrable almost complex structure of the Hölder-Zygmund class $\Lambda^r$ on $\overline M$ is sufficiently close to the complex structure on $ M$ in the Hölder-Zygmund norm $\Lambda^{r_0}(\overline M)$ for some $r_0>5/2$, then there is a diffeomorphism $F$ from $\overline M$ into $\mathcal M$ that transforms the almost complex structure into the complex structure on $F(M)$, where $F \in \Lambda^s(M)$ for all $s<r+1/2$.

The biholomorphic invariance of essential normality on bounded symmetric domains

Abstract:This paper mainly concerns the biholomorphic invariance of $p$-essential normality of Hilbert modules on bounded symmetric domains. By establishing new integral formulas concerning rational function kernels for the Taylor functional calculus, we prove a biholomorphic invariance result related to the $p$-essential normality. Furthermore, for quotient analytic Hilbert submodules determined by analytic varieties, we develop an algebraic approach to proving that the $p$-essential normality is preserved invariant if the coordinate multipliers are replaced by arbitrary automorphism multipliers. Moreover, the Taylor spectrum of the compression tuple is calculated under a mild condition, which gives a solvability result of the corona problem for quotient submodules. As applications, we extend the recent results on the equivalence between $\infty$-essential normality and hyperrigidity.
