Abstract:We show the (anti)holomorphicity of smooth Kobayashi isometries of the diamond, the domain defined as $\triangle:=\{z\in\mathbb C^2:|z_1|+|z_2|<1\}$. Additionally, we discuss the problem of uniqueness of real geodesics, left inverses and strict convexity of indicatrices.

Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.
Holomorphic maps acting as Kobayashi isometries on a family of geodesics

Abstract:Consider a holomorphic map $F: D \to G$ between two domains in ${\mathbb C}^N$. Let $\mathcal F$ denote a family of geodesics for the Kobayashi distance, such that $F$ acts as an isometry on each element of $\mathcal F$. This paper is dedicated to characterizing the scenarios in which the aforementioned condition implies that $F$ is a biholomorphism. Specifically, we establish this when $D$ is a complete hyperbolic domain, and $\mathcal F$ comprises all geodesic segments originating from a specific point. Another case is when $D$ and $G$ are $C^{2+\alpha}$-smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains, and $\mathcal F$ consists of all geodesic rays converging at a designated boundary point of $D$. Furthermore, we provide examples to demonstrate that these assumptions are essentially optimal.

First, we show that for a ‐smooth totally geodesic Kobayashi isometric embedding where , are bounded symmetric domains, if is irreducible and or more generally, for any tangent vector of , then is either holomorphic or anti‐holomorphic. Second, we characterize Kobayashi isometries from a reducible bounded symmetric domain to itself.

On geometric properties of holomorphic isometries between bounded symmetric domains

Abstract:We study holomorphic isometries between bounded symmetric domains with respect to the Bergman metrics up to a normalizing constant. In particular, we first consider a holomorphic isometry from the complex unit ball into an irreducible bounded symmetric domain with respect to the Bergman metrics. In this direction, we show that images of (nonempty) affine-linear sections of the complex unit ball must be the intersections of the image of the holomorphic isometry with certain affine-linear subspaces. We also construct a surjective holomorphic submersion from a certain subdomain of the target bounded symmetric domain onto the complex unit ball such that the image of the holomorphic isometry lies inside the subdomain and the holomorphic isometry is a global holomorphic section of the holomorphic submersion. This construction could be generalized to any holomorphic isometry between bounded symmetric domains with respect to the \emph{canonical Kähler metrics}. Using some classical results for complex-analytic subvarieties of Stein manifolds, we have obtained further geometric results for images of such holomorphic isometries.

Abstract:A holomorphic curve in moduli spaces is the image of a non-constant holomorphic map from a hyperbolic surface $B$ of type $(g,n)$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_h$ of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $h$. We show that, when all peripheral monodromies are of infinite order, the holomorphic map is a quasi-isometric immersion with parameters depending only on $g$, $n$, $h$ and the systole of $B$. When peripheral monodromies also satisfy an additional condition, we find a lift quasi-isometrically embedding a fundamental polygon of the hyperbolic surface $B$ into the Teichmüller space. We further improve the Parshin-Arakelov finiteness theorem, by proving that there are only finitely many monodromy homomorphisms induced by holomorphic curves of type $(g,n)$ in $\mathcal{M}_h$ where systole is bounded away from $0$, up to equivalence.

Abstract:We show that on convex domains with -smooth boundary the limit set of non-visible Kobayashi geodesics are contained in a complex face. In this implies the existence of a complex tangential line segment of non-Goldilocks point in the boundary. Conversely, we construct sequences of non-visible almost-geodesics on ( -)convex domains whose boundary contains a complex tangential line segment of non-Goldilocks points in a specific direction.

Diamonds: Homology and the Central Series of Groups

Abstract:We establish an analog of a theorem of Stallings which asserts the homomorphisms between the universal nilpotent quotients induced by a homomorphism $G \to H$ of groups are isomorphisms provided a pair of homological conditions are satisfied. Our analogy does not have a homomorphism between $G$ and $H$ but instead we have a diamond of groups containing $G,H$ that satisfies a similar homological condition. We derive a few applications of this result. First, we show that there exist non-isomorphic number fields whose absolute Galois groups have isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients. We show that there exists pairs of non-isometric hyperbolic $n$-manifolds whose fundamental groups are residually nilpotent and have isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients. These are the first examples of residually nilpotent Kleinian groups with arbitrarily large nilpotent genus. Complex hyperbolic 2-manifold examples are given which also supply examples of surfaces whose geometric fundamental groups have the isomorphic universal nilpotent quotients and the isomorphisms are compatible with the outer Galois actions. The case of Riemann surfaces provides examples of curves where the same implication holds. In fact, for every $g \geq 2$, we show all but finitely many curves in $\mathcal{M}_g$ have finite covers where this happens.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the geometry of germs of real analytic surfaces in $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ having an isolated Cauchy-Riemann (CR) singularity at the origin. These are perturbations of {\it Bishop quadrics}. There are two kinds of CR singularities stable under perturbation~: {\it elliptic} and {\it hyperbolic}. Elliptic case was studied by Moser-Webster \cite{moser-webster} who showed that such a surface is locally, near the CR singularity, holomorphically equivalent to {\it normal form} from which lots of geometric features can be read off. In this article we focus on perturbations of {\it hyperbolic} quadrics. As was shown by Moser-Webster \cite{moser-webster}, such a surface can be transformed to a formal {\it normal form} by a formal change of coordinates that may not be holomorphic in any neighborhood of the origin. Given a {\it non-degenerate} real analytic surface $M$ in $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ having a {\it hyperbolic} CR singularity at the origin, we prove the existence of a non-constant Whitney smooth family of connected holomorphic curves intersecting $M$ along holomorphic hyperbolas. This is the very first result concerning hyperbolic CR singularity not equivalent to quadrics. This is a consequence of a non-standard KAM-like theorem for pair of germs of holomorphic involutions $\{\tau_1,\tau_2\}$ at the origin, a common fixed point. We show that such a pair has large amount of invariant analytic sets biholomorphic to $\{z_1z_2=const\}$ (which is not a torus) in a neighborhood of the origin, and that they are conjugate to restrictions of linear maps on such invariant sets.

Abstract:For a Kobayashi hyperbolic domain, Abate introduced the notion of small and big horospheres of a given radius at a boundary point with a pole. In this article, we investigate which domains have the property that closed big horospheres and closed small horospheres centered at a given point and of a given radius intersect the boundary only at that point? We prove that any model-Gromov-hyperbolic domain have this property. To provide examples of non-Gromov-hyperbolic domains, we show that unbounded locally model-Gromov-hyperbolic domains and bounded, Dini-smooth, locally convex domains, that are locally visible, also have this property. Finally, using the geometry of the horospheres, we present a result about the homeomorphic extension of biholomorphisms and give an application of it.

Abstract:We prove that any convex geometry $\mathcal{A}=(U,\mathcal{C})$ on $n$ points and any ideal $\mathcal{I}=(U',\mathcal{C}')$ of $\mathcal{A}$ can be realized as the intersection pattern of an open convex polyhedral cone $K\subseteq {\mathbb R}^n$ with the orthants of ${\mathbb R}^n$. Furthermore, we show that $K$ can be chosen to have at most $m$ facets, where $m$ is the number of critical rooted circuits of $\mathcal{A}$. We also show that any convex geometry of convex dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and that any multisimplicial complex (a basic example of an ideal of a convex geometry) of dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$ and that this is best possible. From our results it also follows that distributive lattices of dimension $d$ are realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{d}$ and that median systems are realizable. We leave open %the question whether each median system of dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{O(d)}$.

Geometrical finiteness for automorphism groups via cone conjecture

Abstract:This paper aims to establish the geometrical finiteness for the natural isometric actions of (birational) automorphism groups on the hyperbolic spaces for K3 surfaces, Enriques surfaces, Coble surfaces, and irreducible symplectic varieties. As an application, it can be seen that such groups are non-positively curved: ${\rm CAT(0)}$ and relatively hyperbolic. In the case of K3 surfaces, we additionally provide a dynamical characterization of the relative hyperbolicity, and the first counterexample to Mukai's conjecture concerning the virtual cohomological dimension of automorphism groups.

Abstract:We study the parameter space structure of degree $d \ge 3$ one complex variable polynomials as dynamical systems acting on $\C$. We introduce and study {\it straightening maps}. These maps are a natural higher degree generalization of the ones introduced by Douady and Hubbard to prove the existence of small copies of the Mandelbrot set inside itself. We establish that straightening maps are always injective and that their image contains all the corresponding hyperbolic systems. Also, we characterize straightening maps with compact domain. Moreover, we give two classes of bijective straightening maps. The first produces an infinite collection of embedded copies of the $(d-1)$-fold product of the Mandelbrot set in the connectedness locus of degree $d \ge 3$. The second produces an infinite collection of full families of quadratic connected filled Julia sets in the cubic connectedness locus, such that each filled Julia set is quasiconformally embedded.

Abstract:In [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2008.04625" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.04625">arXiv:2008.04625</a>] the authors constructed a classifying space for polystable holomorphic vector bundles on a compact Kähler manifold using analytic GIT theory. The aim of this article is to show that this classifying space taken in the weakly normal category is a coarse moduli space in the sense of complex geometry when the topology is fixed as induced by the space of Hermite-Einstein connections modulo the group of unitary gauge transformations.

Abstract:We study nearly geodesic immersions in higher rank symmetric spaces of non-compact type, which we define as immersions that satisfy a bound on their fundamental form, generalizing the notion of immersions in hyperbolic space with principal curvature in $(-1,1)$. This notion depends on the choice of a flag manifold embedded in the visual boundary, and immersions satisfying this bound admit a natural domain in this flag manifold that comes with a fibration. As an application we give an explicit fibration of some domains of discontinuity for some Anosov representations. Our method can be applied in particular to some $\Theta$-positive representations for each notion of $\Theta$-positivity.

Abstract:In [11], Mioduszewski characterized inverse sequences of polyhedra for which their inverse limits are homeomorphic. In this article, we obtain a more general characterization: we characterize inverse sequences of arbitrary compact metric spaces and continuous single-valued functions for which their inverse limits are homeomorphic. In our approach, set-valued functions are used instead of continuous single-valued functions in almost commutative diagrams. Using this characterization we give an alternative proof that the Brouwer-Janiszewski-Knaster continuum and the pseudo-arc are circle-like continua.
