Abstract:Analysis of genetic main effects and genotype x environment (GE) interaction effects on the oil content of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) was conducted by using a genetic model for the quantitative traits of seeds in diploid plants. The experiments were carried out over two years with 8 parents and a diallel mating design, which produced F1 and F2 generations. We found that the oil content of rape was simultaneously controlled by embryo genetic effect, cytoplasmic effects and maternal genetic effect as well as GE interaction effects, with the cytoplasmic and maternal effects playing the main role. The results indicate that selection of maternal plants for high oil content would be more efficient than selection based on single seeds. Since the GE interaction effects accounted for 73.69% of the total genetic effects and were more important than the genetic main effects it seems that selection might be influenced by environmental conditions. The estimate of narrow-sense heritability for oil content was 73.52% with the interaction heritability being larger than the general heritability, indicating that the early generations can be used for selection for high oil content. The prediction of genetic effects suggested that the parent cultivars Youcai 601 and Gaoyou 605 were better than the other cultivars for increasing oil content during the breeding of B. napus. The implications for the quantitative trait loci mapping of seed traits interfered by these three genetic systems is also discussed.
Effect of sowing date on yield and yield components of three oilseed rape varieties

Abstract:In order to elucidate the effect of sowing date on the yield and yield components of oilseed rape ( Brassica napus L . ), three varieties - Tower, Rafal and Global - were sown from 7 November to 22 December 2000-01 on four dates at an interval of 15 days in the Dezful region of Iran. A split-plot design based on randomized complete blocks with four replications was used in the experiment, where the sowing dates and cultivars formed the main and subplots, respectively. Variables including plant height, axillary branches/plant, pods/plant, seeds/pod, single seed weight, biomass, seed oil content and seed yield were measured. The soil of the experimental site had a loamy clay texture. The site had 250 mm annual precipitation and was located in the semi-arid zone. The results showed that the sowing date had a highly significant effect on morphological characteristics, yield components, oilseed rape yield and seed oil content. A delay in the sowing date caused a reduction in all the yield components especially in pods/plant, and in oilseed yield, which dropped from 285 g m -2 when sown on 7 November to 135 g m -2 when sowing was delayed to 22 December. Variations in sowing dates had different effects on the individual yield components, with pods/plant, seeds/pod and single seed weight decreasing to the greatest extent. The significant effect of variety on all characters with the exception of single seed weight indicated that there were genetic differences between the studied cultivars. Oilseed yield showed significantly positive correlations with pods/plant (r=0.93), single seed weight (r=0.83) and seeds/pod (r=0.66). The results of path analysis showed that pods/plant and seeds/pod had the highest positive and negative effects on oilseed yield, respectively. Finally, considering the susceptibility of pods/plant to variations in sowing date and the importance of this character in the size of the oilseed yield, a delay in the planting date in the Dezful region was found to reduce the oilseed yield through a reduction in pods/plant.
Influence of Nitrogen and Vermicompost on Grain and Oil Yield of Rapeseed CV. RGS003

Abstract:Rapeseed is one of the most important annual cr ops contains high value of oil and protein. This experiment was conducted using nitrogen (0, 100 and 200 kg/ha) and cow manure vermicompost (0, 5, 10 and 15 t/ha) in a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replica tions at a field in Borazjan, State of Bushehr, Iran. Nitrogen and vermicompost altered grain yield, seed protein percentage, seed oil percentage and oil yield of rapeseed cultivar RGS003 significantly. Under our experimental conditions, nitrogen (100 kg/h a) + vermicompost (15 t/ha) can be recommended and used as efficient levels to improve grain yield and oil yield.

Abstract:PurposeConservation tillage systems, including no-till and minimum-till, benefit soil quality and soil water preservation as well as reduce the economic and energetic costs of agricultural production. Nonetheless, specific knowledge regarding the interactions between conservation tillage and other crop management practices targeting improved system sustainability on crop yield and quality as well as nitrogen dynamics and losses remain understudied in drought impacted, arid and semi-arid environments and sandy soils. This study investigated the effects of different tillage systems (no-tillage, minimum and conventional), fertilizers (no fertilizer, vermicompost, urea and combined urea and vermicompost (VU) and irrigation regimes (normal irrigation and irrigation after 50% field capacity) on various quantitative and qualitative traits of rapeseed as well as soil nitrate leaching (NL).MethodsField trials were conducted between two growing seasons (2017–2018 and 2018–2019) in Karaj, Iran. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with the arrangement split-split-plot and three replications. Tillage system was assigned to the main plot meanwhile, irrigation was considered as the sub-plot and fertilizer was considered as sub-sub-plot.ResultsUnder both the deficit and normal irrigation regimes and across all tillage types, the highest seed yield, oil yield and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) were found where VU treatment was applied. Furthermore, across all tillage types, the highest NL was observed where urea was applied. When compared with urea, vermicompost and UV treatments respectively decreased the NL by 67 and 50% in no-till plots, 50 and 36% in minimum till plots and 49 and 34% in conventional till plots. Consistent with this, the lowest mean NL (10.4 kg ha−1) resulted from plots where the water-deficit condition was combined with no fertilizer meanwhile, the highest mean NL (83.1 kg ha−1) resulted where normal irrigation was combined with urea.ConclusionThe findings indicate that minimum till in combination with VU treatments support reduced NL over conventional till and urea fertilization practices while improving rapeseed quantitative and qualitative traits.

Abstract:Elevating the yield and altering the composition of seed tocopherols (Toc's) are important to rapeseed breeding and production. However, little is known about the biosynthesis of Toc's in response to environmental signals. In this study, we investigated the effects of exogenous gibberellin (GA(3)) and paclobutrazol (PAC) on Toc biosynthesis. We also explored the interactive effects between the two plant growth regulators (PGRs) and other factors, such as PGR treatment duration, genotype, and growing location on the total Toc yield and composition in oilseed rape seed. GA(3) significantly enhanced the production of Toc's and elevated the alpha-/gamma-Toc ratio in a time- and genotype-dependent manner. By contrast, PAC significantly reduced Toc yield. Genotypic differences were observed in the effects of GA(3) on Toc yield and composition in the seeds. GA(3) significantly increased the Toc yield and alpha-/gamma-Toc ratio in Zheyou-50, a genotype with a low proportion of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). However, GA(3) did not significantly influence these parameters in Jiu-Er-13Xi, a genotype with a high VLCFA proportion. The increased Toc yield induced by GA(3) was mediated by the upregulation of genes (BnPDS1 and BnVTE1) that catalyze the production of Toc precursors. Therefore, applying GA(3) can improve rapeseed quality by increasing Toc yield and improving Toc composition.

Abstract:Generally, lentil seeds are sown following the traditional farming practice with 3-4 numbers of ploughing combined with broadcasting method in lentil growing countries. This is time consuming and costly. The objective of this study was to evaluate the lentil performance as affected by different mechanical seeding system as well as seeding device. There were seven different treatments of which two tillage systems like i) broadcasting after4 times tillage (CT) and ii) broadcasting after tillage with two wheeler driven High Speed Rotary Tiller (HSRT), and five direct mechanical seeding systems like TT+BP =one tillage + bed planting seeding (BP+Pl), TBP =Direct bed planting seeding (BP), TPTOS =Two wheeler operated Seeder (PTOS), TST = Strip tillage seeding (ST) and TZ =Zero tillage seeding (Z). The experiment was carried out by a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. From the results it was revealed that yield was increased from0.56 % to 10.42% in mechanical seeding system than CT. The findings also demonstrated that BP increased yield of about 10.42% with 49.31% of lower fuel consumption which saved 48.1% time compared to CT. The HSRT gave numerically higher yield compare to ST than CT but lower than BP, BP+Pl and PTOS. Zero tillage seeding system gave the minimum seed yield compare to others which was 9.67% and 19% lower than that of CT and BP, respectively. In mechanical seeding systems, bed planting exhibited higher root volume and density compare to that of others, but lower to CT and HSRT. SAARC J. Agri., 18(1): 51-60 (2020)
Evaluation and Screening of Rapeseed Varieties (Brassica napus L.) Suitable for Mechanized Harvesting with High Yield and Quality

Abstract:Improving seed yield and quality and optimizing plant architecture to adapt to mechanized harvesting are essential strategies for rapeseed industry development in the Yangtze River basin. The present study selected 24 elite rapeseed varieties from the middle region of the Yangtze River basin as materials to investigate the growth period, plant architecture characteristics, lodging resistance, yield, and seed quality across 2 growing seasons. The results showed that plant biomass, silique number per plant, and seed yield showed a significant positive correlation with each other. A high plant growth rate was the prerequisite for early maturity varieties to achieve high yield. The path analysis illustrated that plant architecture can directly affect the seed yield (direct path efficiency = 0.17) or indirectly affect the yield through lodging (indirect path efficiency: −0.37 × 0.30 = −0.11). Therefore, modifying the plant architecture needs to balance the tradeoff between seed yield and lodging. The comprehensive performance of selected genotypes was evaluated by combining D-CRITIC (Distance-based inter-criteria correlation) and membership function methods. From the comprehensive performance across two cropping seasons, the varieties V24, V23, V22, V21, V12, V17, V19, and V20 had substantial potential for mechanized harvesting with high yield and good seed quality. These results provide a theoretical basis for farmers’ decisions and breeding of rapeseed suitable for mechanized harvesting in the Yangtze River basin.

The Effect of ABA on Biosynthesis of Fatty Acids and Storage Proteins and the Relevant Mechanism in Cruciferae Oilseed

Abstract:Rapeseed (Brassica napus) and Arabidopsis thaliana belonging to the same family Cruciferae have analogical mechanisms in regulating seed fatty acid (FA) accumulation.Rapeseed is a significant oil crop in China.Elevate its seed oil content is an important goal for rapeseed breeders since many decades.The seed oil content of Arabidopsis varies 20%～35%,andArabidopsis can serve as an ideal model to study the mechanism of synthesis of FAs and other storage compound in seeds.Abscisic acid (ABA) is a plant endogenous hormone that regulates seed development,maturation and the acquisition of seed dormancy.However,little is known about the effect of ABA on accumulation of FAs and storage proteins in cruciferae oilseeds.In this study,ABA with different concentrations was applied to rapeseed as well as Arabidopsis plants which were at reproductive stage.In order to explore the effect of ABA on biosynthesis of FAs and other storage compounds such as protein in seeds,a series of culturing mediums containing various concentrations of ABA were used for the culture of fertilized rapeseed embryos 28 days after pollination (DAP).The results showed that ABA promoted the senescence of Arabidopsis leaves and rapeseed pods reflected by early yellowing.The spray of ABA (200 pmol/L) on Arabidopsis plants before bolting inhibited the development of siliques.Moreover,the spray of ABA repressed the expression of fatty acid elongation 1 (FAE1),inhibited the biosynthesis of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA,C＞20),elevated the proportion of 18-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA),and decreased the proportion of storage protein,indirectly.On the other hand,the culturing of fertilized rapeseed embryos in vitro demonstrated that ABA repressed the expression of fatty acid desaturases (FADs),which further resulted in the reduction of PUFA the increases of VLCFAs and storage proteins.Taken together,the concentration of ABA is critical to seed FA accumulation,i.e.,high (or low) ABA concentrations repressed (or promoted) the expression of genes on the FA biosynthesis pathway.Therefore,different concentrations of exogenous ABA could be applied to regulate seed FA accumulation positive or negatively.This research enriches knowledge about the function of ABA and the understanding about the molecular mechanism regulating the accumulation of fatty acids in oilseeds.
Effects of Nitrogen Application and Planting Density Interaction on the Silique-Shattering Resistance and Yield of Direct-Seeding Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) in Sichuan

Abstract:Rapeseed siliques easily shatter after ripening, resulting in a significant amount of grain loss, which delimits the development of rapeseed machine harvest. However, the effect of nitrogen (N) and density interaction on the characteristics of rape siliques and shattering resistance index is still vague. During the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 growing seasons, we selected the Jiayou No. 5 rapeseed variety and set three N application levels (N1: 90 kg ha−1, N2: 180 kg ha−1, N3: 270 kg ha−1) and two density treatments (M1: 150,000 plants ha−1, M2: 300,000 plants ha−1) to research the effects of N and density interaction on morphological indexes, physiological indexes, shatter resistance index and yield of direct-seeding rapeseed siliques. The silique shatter resistance index, silique’s length, weight, moisture content, silique shell’s weight, thickness, lignin content, cellulose content and phenylalaninase (PAL) activity all increased first and then decreased with the increase in the N application rate; the N2 treatment increased by 18.38% and 26.92%, respectively, compared to the N1 and N3 treatments; 3.65%, 2.48%; 6.70%, 3.58%; 20.46%, 18.33%; 5.97%, 5.96%; 8.82%, 9.60%; 9.12%, 19.90%; 43.85%, 69%; 2.10%, 11.04%. Compared with the M1 treatment, the silique shatter resistance index, silique’s length, weight, moisture content, silique shell’s weight, thickness, lignin content, cellulose content and PAL activity were lower under M2 treatment. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the silique’s length, water content, silique shell’s weight, thickness, lignin content, cellulose content and PAL activity were significantly positively correlated with the silique shatter resistance index. Therefore, this study shows that N2M1 treatment can carry off synergy between silique shatter resistance and yield.

Abstract:[Objective] The aim was to discuss the suitable cultivation technique of hybrid rapeseed for vegetable and oilseed,Yunyouza No.2.[Method] Rapeseed hybrid variety Yunyouza No.2 seedlings was raised and transplanted,then conducted on the orthogonal test of different density,sowing time,bolting date.[Result]When the cultivation technique was as follows: density 12 × 104 plants per hectare,sowing time September 26,picking bolt at budding stage,the comprehensive economic benefit was the highest of 19 056.75 CNY per hectare;the next was the cultivation technique treatment of density 9 × 104 plants per hectare,sowing time September 26,picking bolt at budding stage,and its comprehensive economic benefit was 16 545.90 CNY per hectare;the third was the cultivation technique treatment of density 15 × 104 plants per hectare,sowing time September 26,picking bolt at budding stage,and its comprehensive economic benefit was 15 190.80 CNY per hectare;the lowest was the cultivation technique treatment of density 12 × 104 plants per hectare,sowing time October 16,picking after bolt height 12-15 cm,and its comprehensive economic benefit was 5 450.85 CNY per hectare.[Conclusion]Yunyouza No.2’best cultivation technique is that: density is 12 × 104 plants per hectare,sowing time is the second and third ten days of September,picking bolt at budding stage,and its comprehensive economic benefit is the highest.
Increasing yield, quality and profitability of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) under combinations of nutrient levels in fertiliser and planting density

Abstract:Oilseed rape ( Brassica napus L.) is a crucial source of edible oil and livestock feeding, and is a promising biofuel crop. The increasing demand for oilseed rape requires strategies to increase yield while retaining quality. Field experiments were performed in southern China to evaluate the impacts of fertiliser level and planting density on dry matter accumulation, seed oil and protein content (%) and yield (per ha), oil quality, and the profitability of oilseed rape. Fertiliser treatments contained nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S) and boron (B) at four increasing rates, compared with nil fertiliser, and there were six planting densities (range 7.5–45 × 10 4 plants ha –1 ). Dry matter accumulation significantly ( P < 0.05) increased in response to increasing plant population and fertiliser level, whereas harvest index decreased, suggesting that increasing the production of oilseed rape is limited to improvement of population quality. Seed oil and protein contents were significantly affected by fertiliser level rather than planting density. Increasing the fertiliser rate increased seed protein content, simultaneously slightly decreasing oil content. Glucosinolate content of rapeseed slightly decreased with increasing fertiliser but erucic and oleic acid contents were not affected, indicating that increasing the fertiliser rate might not reduce oilseed rape quality. Manipulation of fertiliser level was more effective than altering planting density for increasing seed oil and protein yields. Highest seed oil and protein yields resulted from the highest fertiliser application of 240 kg N, 52.4 kg P, 174.3 kg K, 15 kg S and 1.2 kg B ha –1 , under a planting density of 22.5 × 10 4 plants ha –1 . Maximum economic gain occurred with the two highest fertiliser levels, whereas planting density has no significant effect on profitability. A balanced application of NPKSB fertilisers should be employed with direct-sowing cultivation of oilseed rape, aimed at building a suitable population structure that balances plant population density and individual growth.

Abstract:Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is one of the most important oil crops in terms of economics, ecology, and nutrition. For the purpose of selecting the most suitable canola genotypes for quantitative and qualitative traits, an experiment was conducted in Damavand region with the presence of nine genotypes and the examination of nine traits with three replications. The results of analysis of variance showed that the effect of genotype in terms of all traits had significant differences at the level of 0.01 and 0.05. Additionally, the results of the average comparison indicated that Zargol and Hyola 401 genotypes were more favorable than other cultivars in terms of all traits. According to the three analyses related to the examination of the traits, it was concluded that the grain yield trait was positively correlated with the harvest index trait, the biological yield trait was positively correlated with the oil percentage trait, and the leaf width trait was positively correlated with the number of days to 50% flowering. Using principal component analysis (PCA), the first three components explained more than 81 percent of the variance in the data, and the first and second components had positive coefficients for Zargol and Hyola 401 genotypes. On the basis of the graphical analysis, the Zargol and Sunday genotypes were selected as the best genotypes. In comparison with the cluster analysis and heat map drawn on the data, the genotypes were grouped into two main groups based on traits. Accordingly, Zargol genotypes are considered stable genotypes in terms of their traits and are suitable for cultivation and agricultural research.
Influence of seeding rates on the formation of productivity of winter rape agrocenoses (Brassica napus L. Oleifera)

Abstract:The influence of sowing rates on the growth, development and formation of seed productivity of winter rape hybrids Pancher and Fencer is highlighted. A structural analysis and comparison of indicators of the individual state of plants at the seeding rate of winter rape recommended by the manufacturer of 500 thousand seeds/ha and reduced rates of 400, 300 and 200 thousand seeds/ha, which model the possible oss of plants in the sowing during the autumn-winter period, were carried out. It was noted that at a sowing rate of 500 thousand units/ha before entering winter (BBCH 15–18), the diameter of the root collar of the hybrids was 0.82–0.84 cm, and the height of the point above the soil level was 2.18–2.35 cm. In the variant with a sowing rate of 200 thousand seeds/ha, the diameter of the root collar of Pancher hybrid increased to 1.13 cm, and that of the Fencer hybrid — 1.11 cm, while the height of the growth point above the soil level of the hybrids was at the level of 1.77–1.88 cm. In the pre-harvest period (BBCH 93–95), the height of winter rape plants was not uniform and largely depended on the seeding rate, i.e., the greater the number of plants per square metre, the taller they were. Thus, at a sowing rate of 500 thousand seeds per hectare, the average height of Pancher winter rape plants was 167 cm, while that of the Fencer hybrid was 173 cm. With a decrease in the seeding rate to 200 thousand seeds/ha, the height of plants also decreased to 156 cm in Pancher hybrid and to 168 cm in Fencer hybrid. At the recommended sowing rates of winter rape (500 thousand units/ha), the number of branches in the hybrids was 6-7 units/plant, the number of pods was 328–386 units/plant, and the weight of 1000 seeds was 2.97–3.15 g. The yield of Pancher hybrid in this variant was 4.37 t/ha, while the yield of the Fencer hybrid was 4.55 t/ha. It was noted that reducing the seeding rate to 400 and 300 thousand units/ha did not significantly reduce the yield of hybrids. However, already at a sowing rate of 200 thousand units/ha, the yield reduction in hybrids was more significant and amounted to 0.68–0.75 t/ha with a yield of 3.62–3.87 t/ha. Studies have shown that winter rape plants have a high compensatory capacity and are able to form high productivity indicators both at the recommended sowing rates (500 thousand units/ha) and at reduced rates (300– 400 thousand units/ha). However, from a practical point of view, it is not necessary to reduce the sowing rates by 40–50% of the recommended ones, as plants may be damaged or destroyed in the autumn-winter period due to drought, freezing, rooting and damage by mouse-like rodents. The revealed peculiarity of winter rape allows determining the limit of rape density at which high and stable productivity, and therefore profitability of production, is ensured.

Abstract:Rapeseed ( Brassica napus L.), the third largest oil crop, is an important source of vegetable oil and biofuel for the world. Although the breeding and yield has been improved, rapeseed still has the lowest yield compared with other major crops. Thus, increasing rapeseed yield is essential for the high demand of vegetable oil and high-quality protein for live stocks. Silique number per plant (SN), seed per pod (SP), and 1000-seed weight (SW) are the three important factors for seed yield in rapeseed. Some yield-related traits, including plant height (PH), flowering time (FT), primary branch number (BN) and silique number per inflorescence (SI) also affect the yield per plant (YP). Using six multi-locus genome-wide association study (ML-GWAS) approaches, a total of 908 yield-related quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) were identified in a panel consisting of 403 rapeseed core accessions based on whole-genome sequencing. Integration of ML-GWAS with transcriptome analysis, 79 candidate genes, including BnaA09g39790D ( RNA helicase ), BnaA09g39950D ( Lipase ) and BnaC09g25980D ( SWEET7 ), were further identified and twelve genes were validated by qRT-PCRs to affect the SW or SP in rapeseed. The distribution of superior alleles from nineteen stable QTNs in 20 elite rapeseed accessions suggested that the high-yielding accessions contained more superior alleles. These results would contribute to a further understanding of the genetic basis of yield-related traits and could be used for crop improvement in B. napus .

Abstract:Rapeseed-mustard plant (Brassica juncea)” is any one of several plant species in the genera Brassica, Rhamphospermum and Sinapis in the family Brassicaceae (the mustard family). Mustard seed is used as a spice. Grinding and mixing the seeds with water, vinegar, or other liquids creates the yellow condiment known as prepared mustard. The seeds can also be pressed to make mustard oil, and the edible leaves can be eaten as mustard greens. Many vegetables are cultivated varieties of mustard plants; domestication may have begun 6,000 years ago. Mustard is a popular condiment, commonly it is a popular condiment made from the seeds of the mustard plant. It can be prepared using white/yellow mustard, brown mustard, or black mustard seeds mixed with liquids, salt, and other flavorings to create a paste or sauce. Mustard pairs well with meats, vegetables, and cheeses and is commonly used in sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs. It is also used in dressings, glazes, sauces, and marinades around the world. The word "mustard" has origins in Latin and French, and archaeological evidence suggests mustard cultivation dates back to ancient civilizations like the Indus Valley. Mustard has a long history of culinary use, with the Romans likely being the first to experiment with mustard as a condiment. In France, Dijon became a renowned center for mustard making, and Dijon mustard is still highly regarded today. Mustard has various uses, such as a condiment, an ingredient in sauces and soups, and an emulsifier in dishes like Hollandaise sauce. The flavor and heat of mustard depend on the seed type and preparation method. Mustard offers nutritional benefits such as vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. Mustard plants is used for producing edible oil for human, oil-cake for feeding animals, sauce, spices, medicine and other purposes in Afghanistan. Mustard has a long history in Afghanistan and is mostly cultivated in the Northern provinces such as Baghlan, Kunduz, Thakkar, Samangan and etc. For the above-mentioned importance of Mustard, we decided to apply a research on seed rates to fine the desirable seed rate of mustard crop for Afghan Mustard growers. Seed rates are one of the important factors, which the suitable seed rates prevent from the economic loss of farmers. This research accomplished in the title of “The effects of different seed rates on yield and growth components of mustard (Brassica juncea)” The research was designed in a complete block design (RCBD) with three replications and five treatments. The data were collected from growth parameters such as plant height, number branches plant-1, number of leaves plant-1 as well as yield parameters such as number of pods plan-1, number of seeds plant-1, seed yield kg ha-1, dry matter kg ha-1 and biological yield kg ha-1. The collected data were analyzed using excel, OPSTAT online testing program, statistical tool for agricultural research (STAR). Based on the statistical analysis the significant differences were observed in all parameters at (P≥0.05. Least significant difference (LSD) was used to compare treatments. A positive correlation was also recognized between growth and yield parameters. Mostly treatment three (15 cm) space between rows performed high influence then the other treatments. We recommend much more research to find the best space between plant to plant and row to row. For the moment the farmers of Afghanistan can use the result of this research on their field for obtaining high yield from Mustard.
Selection of Suitable Genotypes Based on Physiological and Morphological Traits in Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

Abstract:Aims: Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) as one of the most important oilseeds in the world, has a special role in cultivation and plant breeding research. Especially, the properties of rapeseed oil compounds, which have high oleic acid, antioxidant and positive effects on cholesterol, blood sugar control, blood pressure and cancer, make it one of the healthiest and most important edible oils in the world and an alternative to use Other vegetable oils have been introduced in recent years. Evaluation of different genotypes of Rapeseed in terms of different traits and selection of the most appropriate genotypes can be effective in realizing the goals of plant breeding. Study Design: In order to conduct the experiment, a randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used in three replications. Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted in Varamin region of Iran in 2019-2020. Methodology: Each experimental plot had 4 rows of cultivation at a distance of 50 cm. The seeds were planted at a distance of 10 cm from each other and all steps such as watering and weeding were done regularly and manually. Results: The results of analysis of variance at the level of 0.01 indicated that the evaluated genotypes have significant differences in terms of all traits except the number of grains in the pod. In the means comparison of the traits, grain yield and oil percentage traits, which were selected as the most important traits, the Licord genotype was selected as the most favorable genotype. Based on the correlation analysis between the traits, the trait of grain yield had a positive and significant correlation with the traits of thousand grain weight, number of pods in the main stem, pod weight, days to flowering and oil percentage. Based on analysis of the main components, the first five components accounted for more than 74% of the variance of the total data. The drawn polygon diagram also identified Licord, Hyola-401, SLM046, Modena and Option 500 genotypes as desirable genotypes. Conclusion: Non-invasive independent predictors for screening esophageal varices may decrease medical as well as financial burden, hence improving the management of cirrhotic patients. These predictors, however, need further work to validate reliability.
Ideotype Population Exploration: Growth, Photosynthesis, and Yield Components at Different Planting Densities in Winter Oilseed Rape (Brassica napus L.)

Abstract:Rapeseed is one of the most important edible oil crops in the world and the seed yield has lagged behind the increasing demand driven by population growth. Winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is widely cultivated with relatively low yield in China, so it is necessary to find the strategies to improve the expression of yield potential. Planting density has great effects on seed yield of crops. Hence, field experiments were conducted in Wuhan in the Yangtze River basin with one conventional variety (Zhongshuang 11, ZS11) and one hybrid variety (Huayouza 9, HYZ9) at five planting densities (27.0×10(4), 37.5×10(4), 48.0×10(4), 58.5×10(4), 69.0×10(4) plants ha(-1)) during 2010-2012 to investigate the yield components. The physiological traits for high-yield and normal-yield populations were measured during 2011-2013. Our results indicated that planting densities of 58.5×10(4) plants ha(-1) in ZS11 and 48.0×10(4) plants ha(-1) in HYZ9 have significantly higher yield compared with the density of 27.0×10(4) plants ha(-1) for both varieties. The ideal silique numbers for ZS11 and HYZ9 were ∼0.9×10(4) (n m(-2)) and ∼1×10(4) (n m(-2)), respectively, and ideal primary branches for ZS11 and HYZ9 were ∼250 (n m(-2)) and ∼300 (n m(-2)), respectively. The highest leaf area index (LAI) and silique wall area index (SAI) was ∼5.0 and 7.0, respectively. Moreover, higher leaf net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and water use efficiency (WUE) were observed in the high-yield populations. A significantly higher level of silique wall photosynthesis and rapid dry matter accumulation were supposed to result in the maximum seed yield. Our results suggest that increasing the planting density within certain range is a feasible approach for higher seed yield in winter rapeseed in China.

Abstract:This paper reviews the most important biological processes that determine the yield of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). Biological yield is the product of growth rate and duration of the growing period, both of which indicate the potential for improvement in yield. Likewise, a greater harvest index leads to a higher seed yield. A brief survey of five recently published rapeseed crop models is given. Most of these models are poor predictors of biomass and yield; there is a lack of information about key physiological processes involved in establishment of the stand, the production of biomass and formation of yield, cessation of growth in winter, flowering and post-anthesis growth.During flowering and pod set, the relation between source and sink regulates the availability of assimilates necessary for seed filling. The most source-limiting process is related to small photosynthetically active area, caused by a drastic decline in the leaf area index from the start of flowering despite a slow increase in the assimilating pod area. To analyse yield, it is necessary to understand the structure of the yield and the primary and secondary components, which determine seed yield. Plant density governs the components of yield and, thus, the yield of individual plants. A uniform distribution of plants per unit area is a prerequisite for yield stability. The number of pods per plant is decisive for seed yield; this trait is ultimately determined by the survival of branches, buds, flowers and young pods rather than by the potential number of flowers and pods. Seed number per pod is correlated with pod length. It is, therefore, concluded that pod length is a suitable trait for indirect selection in plant breeding.
