Abstract:A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2006 and 2007 at G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar to study the effect of nitrogen stress on productivity and profitability of pop, composite and hybrid corns in Mollisols of Uttarakhand. Significantly higher productivity and profitability was observed at 80 kg than 60 and 40 kg nitrogen application mainly because of better plant growth and yield attributes. Among the maize cultivars, ‘Him-129’ (hybrid) proved more productive and profitable than pop corn ‘VL Amber’ and composites ‘Pragati’ and ‘Vivek-11’.

Abstract:A field experiment was carried out at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, U.S. Nagar, Uttarakhand to find out the effect of different plant population and nutrient management practices on Quality Protein Maize (QPM) on 20th February 2010 in factorial randomized block design replicated thrice with three plant densities viz., 66,666, 83,333 and 100000 plants ha-1 and five nutrient management practices viz., 100% recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF), 125 % RDF, 100 % recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN) through inorganic + 25 % RDN through organic, 75 % RDN through inorganic + 25 % RDN through organic and 50 % RDN through inorganic + 50 % RDN through organic. The results revealed that leaf area index (LAI) and dry matter accumulation were significantly higher under high and low plant density, respectively. Low plant density (66,666 plants ha-1) also recorded significantly higher crop growth rate (2.85 g day-1) and net assimilation rate (10.81 g m2 day-1) during 30-60 DAS. However, leaf area ratio (139.72 cm2 g-1) and relative growth rate (20.88 mg g-1 day-1) were more under higher plant density (1,00,000 plants ha-1) during 30-60 and 60-90 DAS, respectively. High plant density being at par with medium plant density produced maximum cob (99.76 q ha-1) and grain (69.90 q ha-1) yields. However, nutrient management practices consisting of either chemical fertilizers alone or with organic sources had non-significant effect on growth parameters and yields. High plant density gave the highest net return ( 42,960 ha-1) but among nutrient management practices, higher net return was with 125% RDF ( 42,952 ha-1).
Growth Analysis of Baby Corn (Zea mays L.) Under the Effect of Integrated Nutrient Management

Abstract:Maize (Zea mays L.) is the most versatile crop having wider adaptability in varied ecologies. Presently baby corn is gaining popularity among Indian farming communities mainly due to its short duration, high market rate, nutritive value and also its multiuse. Baby corn requires higher population and plant nutrition than normal grain corn. Therefore the nutrient management is of immense importance for higher corn production. The present study was thus carried out during Kharif season 2015 at the Instructional Dairy Farm (IDF), Nagla, Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand to analyse the growth of baby corn under the effect of integrated nutrient management. The experimental design was Randomized Block Design with 11 treatments consisting of sole application of NPK fertilizer, sole application of Azotobacter and Azospirillum, and application of Azotobacter and Azospirillum along with NPK fertilizer. The study revealed that Leaf area index was significantly higher at 50 DAS and harvest under 100% NPK+Azot+Azos. Application of 75% NPK+Azot+Azos had significantly higher at 25-50 DAS while 100% NPK+Azot+Azos gave significantly higher at 50 DAS – harvest. The values remained non significant at both the stages, however the highest was recorded at application of 100% NPK+Azot+Azos. The remained non significant at 25 – 50 DAS but at 50 DAS – harvest, the values recorded significantly higher at 100% NPK+Azot+Azos that remained non significant with all the treatments except control and seed treatment with Azotobacter. The too was recorded non significant by different integrated nutrient management practices at 25-50 DAS but at 50 DAS-harvest, the significantly highest was recorded under control, whereas the lowest was found at application of 100% NPK that remained statistically at par with all other treatments except control. Higher dose of nitrogen coupled with biofertilizers improved the plant growth.
Effect of Planting Techniques and Irrigation Scheduling on Productivity and Water Use Efficiency of Sweet Corn (zea Mays Saccharata)

Abstract:A field experiment was conducted at Pantnagar in spring of 2009 and 2010 to study the response of planting techniques and irrigation schedules on productivity and profitability of sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata). The experiment consisted of three planting techniques viz. flat planting, flat planting followed by earthing up at 25 days after sowing and ridge planting, and four irrigation schedules i.e. irrigation at 50, 75 and 100 mm CPE and crop critical growth stages (knee high, tasseling, silking and grain filling) was laid out at factorial randomized block design with three replications. The pooled results revealed that the increase in green cobs and fodder yields was 5.1 and 15.2% and 5.0 and 12.6% on ridge planted over flat + earthing up and flat planted sweet corn, respectively. Similarly ridge planting was found superior with highest water use efficiency and net profit. Among the irrigation schedules, irrigation at 75 mm CPE gave 5.9, 10.7 and 13.9% higher green cobs than irrigation scheduled at 50 mm CPE and 100 mm CPE and critical growth stages, respectively. Besides, ridge planting with irrigation scheduled at 75 mm CPE had the highest water use efficiency and net profit. It is therefore concluded that spring sweet corn may be planted on ridges and irrigation be scheduled at 75 mm CPE for higher productivity, profitability and water use efficiency.

Effect Of Sorghum Based Intercropping Systems On Productivity, Land Equivalent Ratio And Economics In Mollisols Of Nainital Tarai (Up)

Abstract:A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 1985-86 and 1986-87 to study the productivity, land equivalent ratio (LER) and economics of 13 treatments with grain sorghum (sorghum bicolor Moench) at the Livestock Research Centre, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. The grain yield of sorghum in both the years was highest in sole sorghum, CSH 9 but the total grain equivalents of sorghum was highest in sole soybean. The latter also gave the highest net returns and benefit cost ratio, followed by sorghum CSH 9 + pigeonpea combination. Among different intercropping treatments, sorghum CSH 9 grown with pigeonpea in 2: 1 row arrangement gave the highest grain yield, equivalents of sorghum and LER. The seed yields of pigeonpea, sunflower and soybean were reduced by intercropping with grain sorghum.
Effect of Integrated Nutrient Management on Productivity, Quality, Nutrient Uptake and Economics of Mustard (brassica Juncea)

Abstract:A field experiment was carried during winter season of 2005-06 and 2006-07 to study the effect of integrated nutrient management on productivity, quality, economics and nutrient uptake of mustard [ Brassica juncea (L.) Czernj & Cosson] in Indo-Gangetic plains of India. The plant height, total dry matter accumulation, leaf area index and seed and stover yields were recorded significantly higher when recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF) i.e.120:17.6:16.6:40, N:P:K:S kg/ha was applied along with FYM 10t/ha, 25kg ZnS0 /ha and seed treatment with 4 Azotobacter. On an average, seed yield of mustard increased by 41.2 % over alone application of RDF. Applica- tion of either FYM or Zn or seed treatment along with RDF enhanced the mustard seed yield by 12.0, 11.5 and 13.0%, respectively over RDF alone. The inorganic fertilization had adverse effect on oil as well as glucosinolate contents and highest values were recorded at 50% RDF. Additional application of either of FYM or Zn further in- creased the oil and glucosinolate contents. Azotobacter seed treatment reduced the glucosinolate but improved the oil content. The highest values of N, P, K, S and Zn content and its uptake were recorded with combined appli- cation of RDF with FYM, Zn and Azotobacter.
Production Potential and Economics of Winter Maize (zea Mays) Cultivars in Tarai Belt of Uttarakhand

Abstract:A field experiment was carried out during winter season of 2006–07 and 2007–08 at Crop Research Centre, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar to evaluate the performance of different maize hybrids and composites in Tarai region of Uttarakhand. Hybrid Vivek-15 gave highest cob yield (12 t ha−1), grain yield (6.5 t ha−1), net returns (Rs 38576 ha−1) and benefit: cost ratio (4.09). Among the composites, Kanchan, Tarun and Navin gave higher grain yields, net returns and benefit: cost ratio than other composites. The higher grain yield was attributed to greater cob length, cob girth, cob weight and fodder yield of maize cultivars. Composite Shweta recorded the lowest growth and yield attributes, grain and fodder yield and net return values.
Evaluation of Intercropping Systems in Spring Maize with Sunflower and Urdbean in North Western Plain of India

Abstract:A field experiment was conducted for two years (2007 and 2008) at the G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, to study the productivity, biological efficiency and economics of intercropping in spring maize (Zea mays L.) with sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and urdbean (Vigna mungo L.) under different spatial arrangements. The experiment consisting of ten treatments i.e. three sole crops (maize, sunflower and urdbean), six replacement intercropping system of maize with each sunflower and urdbean in row ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 and one additive intercropping system of maize with urdbean in row ratios of 1+1 was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The intercropping system of maize with urdbean in row ratio (1+1) was found beneficial over sole cropping of maize and gave the maximum maize-equivalent yield (5847 kg ha-1), land-equivalent ratio (1.36) and net return (Rs.13420 ha-1). Abstract:Our accustomed agricultural practices of tilling the soil continuously and excessive fertilizer applications caused not only a decrease in organic carbon content and soil degradation but also disturbed environmental harmony. With this backdrop, current study was carried out during rainy (kharif) seasons of 2018 and 2019 at the research farm of Trihut College of Agriculture, Dholi, Pusa, Bihar to evaluate the effect of different tillage and nutrient management practices on maize (Zea mays L.). The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with tillage as the main plot and nutrient management as the sub-plot. The results showed significantly superior maize grain yield in PB (6.1, 6.2 mg/ ha) and 60% RDN+GSGN (6.0, 5.9 mg/ha) over CT (4.9, 5.0 mg/ha) and RDF (5.1, 5.4 mg/ha) during 2018 and 2019. Similar trend was followed in stover yield, net returns and B:C ratio. Among path analysis, harvest index and no of grains/cob observed largest direct path coefficient of yield attributes to determine the maize grain yield and stover yield respectively. The results suggest that the adoption of conservation tillage and precise nutrient management practices will help in the realization of better yield with maximum profit by way of reducing the input capital apart from improving soil health thereby sustaining natural resources for future generations.

Management of soil cover and tillage regimes in upland rice-sweet corn systems for better system performance, energy use and carbon footprints

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of tillage and mulching regimes on rice-sweet corn systems in the lower Gangetic plains, focusing on region-specific and crop-specific impacts on soil-crop-environmental parameters. The experiment consisted of three levels of tillage: conventional (CT), minimum (MT), and zero (ZT), and four levels of mulching: live, leaf litter, paddy straw, and no mulching. The results show that ZT tillage resulted in higher bulk density (BD) compared to other treatments, despite an increase in soil organic carbon (SOC). Live and leaf litter mulching led to slight reductions in BD in the upper soil layers. CT resulted in net depletion of SOC whereas ZT registered a positive sequestration rate of 1.19 Mg ha-1 yr-1. Live and leaf litter mulching increased SOC sequestration by 42.6% and 38.8% compared to paddy straw mulching, respectively. Initially, ZT resulted in a 10.3% reduction in system productivity compared to CT, while MT yields were comparable to CT. However, mulching regimes consistently improved production by 16.4%-25.2% as compared to no mulch. ZT and MT were found to be more affordable than CT, with cost savings of 18.2% and 6.8%, respectively. ZT had the highest B: C ratio, indicating better economic efficiency. Among the mulching treatments, live mulching was the most economical. Both ZT and MT saved input energy by approximately 22.9% and 13.5%, respectively compared to CT. Live mulching resulted in the highest net energy and energy output. Compared to CT, ZT reduced carbon footprint (CF) by 41.5 and 22.2% in rice and sweet corn, respectively. MT scored midway between ZT and CT in all parameters. CT exhibited several limitations, including high input energy requirements, high cost of cultivation, poor economic efficiency, negative environmental impacts, and loss of SOC. ZT initially experienced yield reduction and lower net returns in the early years. Therefore, MT was identified as the best alternative in the initial years before transitioning completely to ZT, as it provided comparable yields to CT with better overall benefits. Among the soil cover regimes, live mulching was found to be the most favorable option across all dimensions.
Interactive effect of nitrogen and irrigation on evapotranspiration, growth, yield and water productivity of subsurface drip‐irrigated spring maize: Field and simulation studies

Abstract:In northwest India, spring maize water productivity can be increased with subsurface drip irrigation. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted in a split‐plot design for 2 years to assess the effect of three nitrogen levels (125 [N1], 100 [N2] and 75 [N3] kg N ha−1) in the main plots and seven irrigation regimes (six subsurface and one surface drip) in the subplots on water productivity of spring maize. Subsurface drip irrigation was applied at 100%, 80% and 60% cumulative pan evaporation on alternate days (I1, I3 and I5) and at 2‐day intervals (I2, I4 and I6) along with surface drip irrigation at 80% pan evaporation on alternate days (I7). The evapotranspiration (ET), transpiration (T), dry matter accumulation (DMA), leaf area index (LAI), root mass density (RMD), N uptake and grain yield were at par in N1 and N2 but significantly higher than in N3. T, DMA, LAI, RMD, grain N uptake and grain yield were at par in I1, I2, I3 and I7 but significantly higher than in I4, I5 and I6. The real water productivity was at par in N1I1, N1I3 and N2I3 but significantly higher than other interactive combinations. The CERES‐Maize model satisfactorily simulated crop biomass, grain yield, LAI, ET and transpiration. Résumé Au nord‐ouest de l'Inde, la productivité en eau du maïs de printemps peut être augmentée à l'aide de l'irrigation souterraine goutte à goutte. Par conséquent, une expérience sur le terrain a été menée sur les parcelles divisées pendant deux ans afin d'évaluer l'effet de trois niveaux d'azote (125 [N1], 100 [N2] et 75 [N3] kg N ha−1) dans les parcelles principales et sept régimes d'irrigation (six souterraine et un goutte à goutte sur la surface) sur les sous‐parcelles sur la productivité en eau du maïs de printemps. L'irrigation souterraine goutte à goutte a été appliquée à 100, 80 et 60% d'évaporation cumulée un jour sur deux (I1, I3 et I5) et à l'intervalle de deux jours (I2, I4 et I6), de même que l'irrigation souterraine goutte à goutte à 80% d'évaporation un jour sur deux (I7). L'évapotranspiration (ET), la transpiration (T), l'accumulation de matière sèche (DMA), l'indice de surface foliaire (LAI), la densité de la masse racinaire (RMD), l'absorption de N et le rendement céréalier étaient égaux dans N1 et N2, mais significativement plus élevés que N3. La Transpiration, l'accumulation de matière sèche (DMA), l'indice de surface foliaire (LAI), la densité de la masse racinaire (RMD), l'absorption de N et le rendement céréalier étaient égaux dans I1, I2, I3 et I7 mais nettement supérieurs à I4, I5 et I6. La productivité réelle de l'eau était égale pour N1I1, N1I3 et N2I3, mais significativement plus élevée que d'autres combinaisons interactives. Le modèle CERES‐Maïs a simulé de manière satisfaisante la biomasse des cultures, le rendement céréalier, le LAI, l'ET et la T.

Abstract:Tillage is an important agricultural operation which influences soil properties, crop yield and environment. Nine combinations of three tillage practices including conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT) and zero tillage (ZT) were evaluated in fodder sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) + cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) – wheat (Triticum durum) cropping system for 5 years (2009–2014) on clay loam soil under limited irrigation. Continuous ZT practices significantly improved surface soil organic carbon, bulk density, infiltration rate and maximum water holding capacity. Carbon sequestration rate, soil organic carbon stock and soil enzymatic activities were relatively more under ZT than CT-CT practice. Higher fodder yield of sorghum + cowpea was recorded with CT (kharif) while wheat grain yield with ZT (rabi). However, the system productivity was statistically similar in all the tillage treatments on pooled data basis. The economic benefits were also maximum under ZT-ZT practice. The ZT-ZT practice recorded significantly lowest energy input (17.1 GJ ha−1) which resulted in highest energy use efficiency (13.6) and energy productivity (518 kg GJ−1). Thus, adoption of ZT significantly improved soil health, stabilized crop yield, increased profitability and energy use efficiency in the semi-arid agro-ecosystem.

Conservation Tillage and Weed Management Influencing Weed Dynamics, Crop Performance, Soil Properties, and Profitability in a Rice–Wheat–Greengram System in the Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plain

Abstract:A three-year field experiment was carried out to assess the efficacy of various tillage and residue management practices, as well as weed management approaches, in a rice–wheat–green gram rotation. The treatments included: conventional till transplanted rice–conventional till wheat–fallow (T1); conventional till transplanted rice–zero-till wheat–zero-till green gram (T2); conventional till direct-seeded rice—conventional-till wheat—zero-till green gram (T3); zero-till direct-seeded rice—zero-till wheat—zero-till green gram (T4); zero-till direct-seeded rice + residue zero-till wheat + residue zero-till green gram (T5). In weed management, three treatments are as follows: recommended herbicides (W1); integrated weed management (W2); and unweeded (W3). The integrated weed management treatment had the lowest weed biomass, which was 44.3, 45.3, and 33.7% lower than the treatment W3 at 30 and 60 days after sowing and harvest, respectively. T1 grain and straw yielded more than T2 in the early years than in subsequent years. The conventional till transplanted rice–zero-till wheat–zero-till green gram system produced 33.6, 37.6, and 27.7% greater net returns than the zero-till direct-seeded rice—zero-till wheat—zero-till greengram system, respectively. Conventional till transplanted rice–conventional till wheat–fallow had the biggest reduction (0.41%) in soil organic carbon from the initial value. The findings of the study demonstrated that adopting the transplanting method for rice, followed by zero tillage for wheat and green gram, enhanced productivity and profitability, while simultaneously preserving soil health.

Abstract:Abstract Sweet corn production in Indonesia from is volatile and unstable. Unoptimal production of sweet corn in North Sumatra is caused by land conditions, plant populations, pest and disease and level of soil fertility. Effective and efficient soil tillage, crop spacing and number of seeds will affect the physical properties of the soil and plant productivity. This study aims to observe the best planting and tillage methods for maize. This study used a split plot design which is repeated three times with two factors, i.e. 3 levels of number of seeds per planting hole and 3 levels of soil tillage. The results showed that the treatment of tillage and the number of seeds per planting hole give significant effect on the variables of plant height, stem diameter, and total production. The interaction of these two factors showed an influence on the parameters of sweet corn plant height. The treatment of 2 seed per planting hole and 1 time of soil tillage show the best productivity compared to other treatments.

Abstract:Conservation agriculture practices involving zero tillage and residue retention are promising nutrient management strategies for soil health restoration. Despite their potential positive impact on soil fertility, improved crop yields and increased revenues for smallholder farmers; their effect on nitrogen inputs and crop growth is not clearly understood. This may limit their potential as a nutrient management strategy that may remedy soil degradation and boost crop yields for farmers. This study investigated how different tillage practices, crop residues and inorganic nitrogen (N) options affect maize production, soil fertility and economics of smallholder farming systems. The study was conducted in a short-term (2 years) on-station trial, under randomized complete block design with three replications in a maize monocrop system. Six treatments, involving three different rates of maize stover residue (0, 3 and 5 t ha-1) and inorganic N (0, 3 and 5 t ha-1) inputs, respectively, were assessed under conventional and zero tillage systems. Mineral N and organic C were assessed at four depths (0-10 cm, 10-30 cm, 30-60 cm and 60-90 cm) whereas soil aggregate distribution was assessed at 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-15 cm and 15-20 cm depths. Application of inorganic N as the only input increased (p ≤ 0.05) grain yield (with the yields doubling in the short rains (SR) of 2015 and increasing by 1.4 times in long rains (LR) of 2016) compared to unfertilized control treatment. Treatment, soil depth and the time of sampling significantly affected soil mineral N concentration (p ≤ 0.05). Soil organic C reduced significantly (p ≤ 0.05) with sampling depths, but no differences were observed across treatments. At 0-5 cm depth, the proportion of large macroaggregates in zero tillage increased (48%; p ≤ 0.05) after application of crop residues at 5 t ha-1 relative to 3 t ha-1. Zero tillage treatment with application of 5 t ha-1 of residue and 80 kg N ha-1 was the most dominant and most profitable compared to the other treatments. This treatment had a benefit cost ratio (BCR) of 2.9 (in the short rains season of 2015) and 3.0 (long rains of 2016 seasons). Its marginal rate of return (MRR) was 368% (in the 2015 short rains season) and 416% (in the 2016 long rains season). This makes it a good nutrient management strategy with potential of optimizing maize yields.

Abstract:Abstract Background The rice-wheat cropping system is the prevailing agricultural method in the North-Western states of India, namely in the Indo-Gangetic plains. The practice of open burning of rice residue is frequently employed for expedient land preparation, but it has significant adverse impacts on both the environment and human health. These include the emission of greenhouse gases, loss of nutrients, elevated concentrations of particulate matter (PM), and disruption of the biological cycle. This research aims to investigate the implementation of effective management strategies in the rice-wheat cropping system, namely via the use of tillage-based crop cultivation techniques, stubble retention, and integration approaches. The objective is to enhance soil health features in order to augment crop yield and improve its attributes. Results The research was carried out using a split plot experimental design, consisting of three replications. The main plot consisted of four different cultivation methods, while the subplot included three genotypes of both rice and wheat. The research demonstrates the enhanced efficacy of residue application is significantly augmenting soil nutrient concentrations compared to standard tillage practices ( P < 0.05). This was accomplished by an analysis of soil nutrient levels, namely nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and organic carbon (OC), at a depth of 0–15 cm. The implementation of natural farming, zero tillage, and reduced tillage practices resulted in decreases in rice grain yields of 34.0%, 16.1%, and 10.8%, respectively, as compared to conventional tillage methods. Similarly, the implementation of natural farming, zero tillage, and reduced tillage resulted in reductions in wheat grain yields of 59.4%, 10.9%, and 4.6% respectively, in comparison to conventional tillage practices. Conclusion Regarding the individual crop genotypes investigated, it was continuously observed that Him Palam Lal Dhan 1 and HPW 368 displayed considerably greater grain yields for both rice and wheat during the two-year experimental period. Furthermore, when considering different cultivation methods, conventional tillage emerged as the most effective approach for obtaining higher productivity in both rice and wheat. Additionally, Him Palam Lal Dhan 1 and HPW 368 exhibited superior performance in terms of various crucial yield components for rice (such as panicle density, grains per panicle, panicle weight, and test weight) and wheat (including effective tiller density, grains per spike, spike weight, and 1000-grain weight).

Abstract:Background: Presently, labour force is diminishing and becoming costlier. In agriculture management of weeds in cropped field has become a real challenge to the farmers, since weeds are affecting the crop yields due to competition for growth resources. Intercropping of leguminous crops and application of pre-emergence herbicides offers an ample scope for weed control. Methods: The present study was conducted at University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru during 2016 and 2017 on red sandy loam soil and the experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with factorial concept and replicated thrice. There were 15 treatment combinations involving three intercrops and five weed management treatments. Result: The results revealed that intercropping of maize with cowpea has recorded significantly higher grain yield (5842 kg/ha), stover yield (7035 kg/ha) and total nutrients uptake (99.53, 27.37, 96.95 kg/ha NPK, respectively). Among the chemical weed management practices, pre-emergence application of pendimethalin 30% EC @ 1.50 kg a.i./ha has recorded significantly higher grain (6589 kg/ha), stover yield (8033 kg/ha), maize equivalent yield (8860 kg/ha), total nutrients uptake (112.81, 31.05, 109.88 kg/ha NPK, respectively) and B:C ratio (3.35) compared to other weed management practices.
Enhancing hybrid maize (Zea mays) productivity, profitability and energetics through tillage and weed-management practices in Eastern India

Abstract:A field experiment was conducted during the rainy (kharif) season of 2017 and 2018 at Regional Research and Technology Transfer Station, Bhawanipatna of the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Odisha, to study the effect of tillage and weed-management practices (WMPs) on weed-control efficiency (WCE), yield attributes, yield, economics and energetics of hybrid maize (Zea mays L.). The results revealed the minimum weed dry-matter production (4.9 g/m2 ) in conventional tillage (CT) followed by 5.5 g/m2 dry-matter in minimum tillage (MT) and 5.9 g/m2 in zero tillage (ZT) at 60 days after sowing (DAS). Among the WMPs, hand-weeding (HW) at 20 and 40 DAS and application of atrazine 1.0 kg a.i./ha followed by HW at 40 DAS resulted in significantly less weed dry weight with higher weed-control efficiency (WCE) at all the stages of growth. The CT recorded higher seed yield (4.78 t/ha), followed by MT and ZT. However, HW at 20 and 40 DAS resulted higher seed yield (5.76 t/ha) which was at par with application of atrazine 1.0 kg a.i./ha followed by (fb) HW at 40 DAS (5.07 t/ha). The seed yield in HW and atrazine-applied plots was 146 and 117% higher than the weedy check. Higher energy-use efficiency (EUE) and energy productivity with less specific energy and energy intensiveness were recorded in MT (7.40, 0.50 kg/MJ, 2.24 MJ/kg and 0.300 MJ/`) indicating, efficient energy utilization by MT than ZT and CT. Among WMPs, application of atrazine 1.0 kg a.i./ha fb HW at 40 DAS recorded EUE of 9.56, energy productivity of 0.65 kg/MJ, specific energy of 1.56 MJ/kg and energy intensiveness of 0.294 MJ/`.

Abstract:An experiment was conducted to assess the “effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers on nutrient content and uptake of high quality protein maize (Zea mays L.) to under South Saurashtra agroclimatic zone of Gujarat” during summer, 2016 at the department of agronomy, college of agriculture, JAU, Junagadh. The experiment comprising of total twelve treatment combinations consisting four levels of nitrogen (Control, 90 kg N ha-1, 120 kg N ha-1, 150 kg N ha-1) and three levels of phosphorus (Control, 45 kg P2O5 ha-1, 60 kg P2O5 ha-1) laid out in Factorial Randomized Block Design replicated thrice. The results revealed that application of 150 kg N/ha significantly higher nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content and uptake of grains and straw over control and 90 kg N/ha, while at par with 120 kg N/ha. Result showed that application of 60 kg P2O5 /ha significantly higher nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content and uptake of grains and straw, being remained at par with 45 kg P2O5 /ha over control.
