Abstract:Starting from a previous experience carried out by the working group “Building and Environmental Hygiene” of the Italian Society of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine (SItI), the aim of the present work is to define new strategic goals for achieving a “Healthy and Salutogenic City”, which will be useful to designers, local governments and public bodies, policy makers, and all professionals working at local health agencies. Ten key points have been formulated: 1. climate change and management of adverse weather events; 2. land consumption, sprawl, and shrinking cities; 3. tactical urbanism and urban resilience; 4. urban comfort, safety, and security perception; 5. strengths and weaknesses of urban green areas and infrastructures; 6. urban solid waste management; 7. housing emergencies in relation to socio-economic and environmental changes; 8. energy aspects and environmental planning at an urban scale; 9. socio-assistance and welfare network at an urban scale: importance of a rational and widespread system; and 10. new forms of living, conscious of coparticipation models and aware of sharing quality objectives. Design strategies, actions, and policies, identified to improve public health and wellbeing, underline that the connection between morphological and functional features of urban context and public health is crucial for contemporary cities and modern societies.

Abstract:The development of urban green space is closely related to public health. This article reviews the researches about green space that based on public health, exploring the relationship between green space and public health. Most of literatures confirmed the positive correlation between green space and public health, but there may be a complex relationship between them. Green space may have a positive impact on public health, mainly because of the natural elements of green space, and the promotion of healthy behaviors. Now green space is regarded as public health policy, and the existing research results provide references for green space design. The final part proposes the research prospects based on current disputes and difficulties.

Abstract:Abstract Pedestrian-friendly, liveable, sociable human scale and fun urban environment are the qualities for good cities. Human activities will happen in urban public places if cities can offer choices for people. Increasing the use of the spaces in an urban environment through human activities can turn urban spaces into becoming “places” that is crucial to create good cities. Urban spaces should cater the functional, social, and leisure needs of people. It has positively related to a sense of community that contributes to the identity and image of the city. Therefore, urban street planning and design need to emphasis more on crucial aspects such as the physical, social, cultural, economics and pedestrians to create an urban street environment that is attractive as a destination for economic and social activities. This paper aims to propose and discuss optimal design solutions for a better urban street environment in Ipoh old town, Perak. The objectives are 1) to identify nodes and linkages, qualities of place and fabrics of the spaces and; 2) to determine relationships between the quality of the physical environment of the street and social activities that contribute to the use of the spaces. The study adopted a qualitative methodological strategy. Visual surveys were used to observe the relationship between the physical urban environment and the users’ activities in Ipoh old Town, Perak. Field observation was conducted to gather evidence focusing on the functional aspects of the actual scenes of the place through physical and activity mapping. This study has found that the relationship between the physical environment and the users’ activities significantly influenced the quality of place and fabric of the Ipoh town and in turn, contribute towards reimagining identity of Ipoh as a prominent heritage town.

Abstract:Streets are an important element of freely accessible public space and constitute the most significant manifestation of the public domain. They exist to cater for the social and leisure requirements of the public and have a positive association with economic development, public physical well-being and help establish an environment of communal bonding. It is therefore crucial that streets are friendly to all users, a public space which provides a liveable environment for pedestrians with a walkable environment that is inviting, safe, aesthetically pleasing, and equipped with sufficient pedestrian amenities. Thus, this paper aims to examine the physical design features and characteristics of user- friendly streets that contribute to a liveable environment. This review of the literature on liveability and user- friendly streets indicates that many factors influence the degree of liveliness and form and finds that the physical design and characteristics like Proportion and dimension, Sense of enclosure, Scale of street, Transparency, Unity and Quality of View. Also finds the qualities of a user-friendly street such as, Comfort and convenient, Safety and security, and Accessibility and linkages. All factors based on the purpose of physical forms and appearances, socio-economic and characteristics of both users and the residents. As such, a well-designed street environment is essential with the streets as ‘public space’ which can enhance their liveable environments in advance.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a renewed interest in urban environment and healthy living and the changes in urban environments which can make for a healthier living. Today, more than 50% of the global population lives in urban areas, and in Europe the number is 75%. We present a narrative review to explore considerations and necessary requirements to achieve health and well-being within strategies for healthy design and urban planning whilst rethinking urban spaces for a post-COVID-19 and carbon-neutral future. The achievement of health and well-being demands healthy design strategies, namely, (1) moving from the concept of infrastructure for processes to the infrastructure for healthy living—requirements for healthy places, cycling, walking, disintegrating the role of polluting traffic from the urban environments, social vulnerability and equality; (2) physical space that will achieve standards of 'liveable communities'—open, green space requirements and standards for any built environment; (3) mainstreaming 'in-the-walking distance' cities and neighbourhoods for healthy physical activities for daily living; (4) exploring any of the new concepts that connect the nexus of urban spaces and public health and improving of the population's well-being. Public health needs to be prioritised systematically in planning of built environments, energy generations, sustainable food production, and nutrition.

Abstract:Urban physical environments are the physical settings and built environments in neighbourhoods and cities which provide places for human activities. Evidence suggests that there are substantial associations between urban physical environments and various health outcomes, e.g. people's physical activities might be influenced by surrounding physical environments, thereby affecting their health behaviours; more exposure to urban physical environments may benefit human mental health. Street view imagery enables us to capture the landscape at eye-level, making it a promising data source for observing and analysing the realistic dynamics of urban physical environments. Compared with traditional in-person assessments and field observations, street view imagery-based data collection is relatively time-effective and cost-effective. Researchers from epidemiology, psychology, and geography have used street view imagery to quantify the built environment and understand its impacts on public health. To summarize current research trends, this paper systematically reviews the use of street view images for sensing urban environments in public health studies. Specifically, we describe the characteristics of street view imagery and review the methodology for image processing and semantic understanding. We then summarize the challenges that remain for quantifying urban environments in terms of data and methodology. Several future research directions that would benefit public health research and practices are recommended in urban environment research.

Abstract:Innovative sustainable design approaches in urban architecture play a crucial role in addressing the growing challenges of urbanization, environmental degradation, and the need for aesthetically pleasing living spaces. This study explores various sustainable design strategies, such as biophilic design, Net-Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs), green roofs, vertical gardens, adaptive reuse, and circular economy principles, highlighting their ability to balance environmental impact with aesthetic appeal. Biophilic design integrates natural elements into urban environments, enhancing mental and physical well-being, while NZEBs focus on energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprints through renewable energy sources. Green roofs and vertical gardens provide ecological benefits, including air purification and biodiversity, while also creating visually engaging urban landscapes. Adaptive reuse and the circular economy emphasize the repurposing of existing structures and materials, promoting sustainability while preserving cultural heritage. Through a qualitative literature review, this research identifies the benefits and challenges associated with these design approaches and discusses their potential to transform urban architecture into more sustainable and livable spaces. The findings suggest that a holistic approach, integrating aesthetics and sustainability, is essential for creating urban environments that are resilient, environmentally responsible, and socially inclusive. This study provides valuable insights for architects, urban planners, and policymakers seeking to implement sustainable design principles in contemporary urban settings.

Abstract:Industrial Revolution has a significant contribution to forming the global cities. Many developments happened dictated by Industrial needs simultaneously with increasing number of populations by urbanization. One part of development to support industrialization and urbanization is infrastructures. Infrastructures such as street for cars and train railway. The development of infrastructures is affecting health, social, economic, and environment of citizen. It is also responsible for the decline of quality of life in many global cities. As time goes by, another significant shift happens in many global cities. Infrastructure becomes outdated, industry leaves, the local economy deflates, residents flee and the community implodes. It leaves many derelict infrastructures, other facilities of industry, and diverse impacts. To tackle this situation, Urban Regeneration concept was introduced. Furthermore, landscape also can be used as a tool of urban regeneration concept that intended to improve quality of life in the cities. According to this situation, there are two projects that represent landscape project as urban regeneration. The first project is The Highline project in New York by James Corner Field Operations, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Piet Oudolf that revitalizing previous railway and Seoullo 7017 Skygarden in South Korea by MVRDV that revitalizing previous highway. The aim of this paper are to presents more insight and elaboration about how urban regeneration implemented in the cities from two landscape projects example and describe some critical review of both projects.

Abstract:Most democratic governments have prioritizedoffering people more significant input in government decision-making and promoting public participation in policy creation. People and governments may now effectively integrate formerly unsurmountable gaps in their relationships thanks to advances in digital and information technologies. "Smart City" technologies are not a new term in today's urbanizationdevelopment field; however, this "Smart City" technologies term is likely unfamiliar with the rural area, as the rural area is sometimes assumed to perform poorly in the development of innovative city initiatives, which are mostly being pioneered by the local government authority with a focus on a city or urban region. Citizens can now participate in decision-making and policy-making due to the smart city project initiative, which cannot be disregarded entirely; unfortunately, rural population participation remains limited. This conceptual research aims to examine smart city project aspirations for the rural community public participation framework. The author comprehends the importance of including significant public participation in all parts of the planning process. The methodology behind this researchis based on a detailed study of the scholarly literature that has already been done. The conclusions of the research were derived from a number of different reading materials, such as books, journals, and other sources on smart city programsfor public participation in rural areas.

Abstract:Despite the relevance of cities and city policies for health, there has been limited examination of large numbers of cities aimed at characterizing urban health determinants and identifying effective policies. The relatively few comparative studies that exist include few cities in lower and middle income countries. The Salud Urbana en America Latina study (SALURBAL) was launched in 2017 to address this gap. The study has four aims: (1) to investigate social and physical environment factors associated with health differences across and within cities; (2) to document the health impact of urban policies and interventions; (3) to use systems approaches to better understand dynamics and identify opportunities for intervention and (4) to create a new dialogue about the drivers of health in cities and their policy implications and support action. Beyond these aims SALURBAL, has an overarching goal of supporting collaborative policy relevant research and capacity -building that engages individuals and institutions from across Latin America. In this review we provide an update on the SALURBAL data resource and collaborative approach and summarize key findings from the first aim of the study. We also describe key elements of our approach, challenges we have faced and how we have overcome them, and identify key opportunities to support policy relevant evidence generation in urban health for the future.
