Abstract:<p>High-speed industrial tobacco separation is an important step to ensure consistency and quality of all types of tobacco products. This is often based on experienced human inspection to achieve broad chemical differentiation such as total alkaloids and sugars, and visual aspects of the leaf, such as size and colour, among others. The aim of this work was to develop an inline simultaneous analytical method to quantify compounds such as alkaloids, sugars, nitrates, polyphenols, carotenoids, fatty acids, tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) using near infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR HSI) with associated chemometrics. To achieve this, a hyperspectral camera was installed on a tobacco conveyor belt immediately after the tobacco entry position. The pre-process of the infrared image and the analyte prediction was developed to provide chemical results within 5 s after image acquisition. The models were established offline using partial least square regression (PLS) in the calibration group and tested in a validation group defined by the Kennard-Stone algorithm. Twenty-two models were developed, of which twenty were considered satisfactory (R2CV ranged from 0.67 to 0.86) and with prediction errors from 4.28% to 17.06%. For sucrose esters and carotenoids it was not possible to obtain satisfactory results. The proposed methodology was able to determine, simultaneously, fifteen analytes with good level of precision and accuracy. Moreover, the proposed method was also able to determine TSNAs, with adequate accuracy and precision, as a screening tool. This could significantly improve the quality of final tobacco products.</p>
