Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations of dense and rarefied fluids comprising small chain molecules in chemically patterned nano-channels predict a novel switching from Poiseuille to plug flow along the channel. We also demonstrate behavior akin to the lotus effect for a nanodrop on a chemically patterned substrate. Our results show that one can control and exploit the behavior of fluids at the nanoscale using chemical patterning.

Abstract:This fluid dynamics video illustrates recent advances in the understanding of the mechanism which causes the sinuous path formed by liquid rivulets on partially wetting inclines. The images themselves show how a simple lighting set-up using a large Fresnel lens can be used to obtain high contrast images of large transparent objects.

Abstract:The oscillatory flows present in an inkjet printhead can lead to strong deformations of the air-liquid interface at the nozzle exit. Such deformations may lead to an inward directed air jet with bubble pinch-off and the subsequent entrainment of an air bubble, which is highly detrimental to the stability of inkjet printing. Understanding the mechanisms of bubble entrainment is therefore crucial in improving print stability. In the present work, we use ultrafast X-ray phase-contrast imaging and direct numerical simulations based on the Volume-of-Fluid method to study the mechanisms underlying the bubble entrainment in a piezo-acoustic printhead. We first demonstrate good agreement between experiments and numerics. We then show the different classes of bubble pinch-off obtained in experiments, and that those were also captured numerically. The numerical results are then used to show that the baroclinic torque, which is generated at the gas-liquid interface due to the misalignment of density and pressure gradients, results in a flow-focusing effect that drives the formation of the air jet from which a bubble can pinch-off.

Abstract:We present several dye visualization and numerical simulation fluid dynamics videos of a sessile jellyfish subjected to channel flow. The low resolution video and the high resolution video display the vortex patterns in different channel flows. Abstract:We demonstrate Thermotion, a novel method using thermofluidic composites to design and display thermochromic animation effects on object surfaces. With fluidic channels embedded under the object surfaces, the composites utilize thermofluidic flows to dynamically control the surface temperature as an actuator for thermochromic paints, which enables researchers and designers for the first time to create animations not only on two and three-dimensional surfaces but also on the surface made of a few flexible everyday materials. We demonstrate the fabrication workflow of the composites and the design space of the animation effects. A range of applications is shown leveraging the objects’ dynamic displays both visually and thermally, including dynamic artifacts, teaching aids, and ambient displays. We envision an opportunity to extend thermofluidic composites to other heat-related practices for further dynamic and programmable interactions with temperature.

Abstract:Inkjet printing is a ubiquitous consumer and industrial process that involves concomitant processes of droplet impact, wetting, evaporation, and imbibement into a substrate as well as consequential substrate rearrangements and remodeling. In this work, we perform a study on the interaction between ink dispersions of different composition on substrates of increasing complexity to disentangle the motion of the liquid from the dynamic response of the substrate. We print three variations of pigmented inks and follow the ensuing dynamics at millisecond and micron time and length scales until complete drying using a multiple scattering technique, Laser Speckle Imaging (LSI). Measurements of the photon transport mean free path, l*, for the printed inks and substrates show that the spatial region of information capture is the entire droplet volume and a depth within the substrate of a few um beneath the droplet. Within this spatial confinement, LSI is an ideal approach for studying the solid-liquid transition at these small length and time scales by obtaining valid g2 and d2 autocorrelation functions and interpreting these dynamic changes under through kymographs. Our in-situ LSI results show that droplets undergo delamination and cracking processes arising during droplet drying, which are confirmed by post-mortem SEM imaging.

Abstract:A new method of image based flow analysis and synthesis from a still image is presented. We analyze the flow parts from a still image in order to get continuous video by image matting, image inpainting, projecting flow field onto the image and modulation. We construct and project 3D flow models onto still images and propose 2D modulation methods that are more suitable and practical to our synthesis. Our technique can edit still images that have flow parts. The experiments show the method is effective.

Abstract:We propose a novel framework for simulating ink as a particle-laden flow using particle flow maps. Our method addresses the limitations of existing flow-map techniques, which struggle with dissipative forces like viscosity and drag, thereby extending the application scope from solving the Euler equations to solving the Navier-Stokes equations with accurate viscosity and laden-particle treatment. Our key contribution lies in a coupling mechanism for two particle systems, coupling physical sediment particles and virtual flow-map particles on a background grid by solving a Poisson system. We implemented a novel path integral formula to incorporate viscosity and drag forces into the particle flow map process. Our approach enables state-of-the-art simulation of various particle-laden flow phenomena, exemplified by the bulging and breakup of suspension drop tails, torus formation, torus disintegration, and the coalescence of sedimenting drops. In particular, our method delivered high-fidelity ink diffusion simulations by accurately capturing vortex bulbs, viscous tails, fractal branching, and hierarchical structures.

Abstract:Slow flow of a single fluid through a porous medium is well understood on a macroscopic level through Darcy's law, a linear relation between flow rate and a combination of pressure differences, viscosity, and gravitational forces. Two-phase flow is complicated by the interface separating the fluids, but understanding of two-dimensional, two-phase flow has been obtained from experiments using transparent cells. In most three-dimensional media, however, visual observation is difficult. Here, we present preliminary results of experiments on a model medium consisting of randomly packed glass spheres, in which one fluorescent liquid invades another. By refractive index matching and scanning with a sheet-shaped laser beam, we obtain slices of the flow patterns, which we combine into three-dimensional pictures. We observe a compact region of invading fluid, surrounded by finger-like protrusions. The compact region becomes more dominant with increasing invader flow rate. The patterns are theoretically analyzed in terms of the interplay between gravitational, viscous, and capillary forces.

Liquid films falling down a vertical fiber: modeling, simulations and experiments

Abstract:We present a control-volume approach for deriving a simplified model for the gravity-driven flow of an axisymmetric liquid film along a vertical fiber. The model accounts for gravitational, viscous, inertial and surface tension effects and results in a pair of coupled one-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equations for the film profile and average downward velocity as functions of time and axial distance along the fiber. Two versions of the model are obtained, one assuming a plug-flow velocity profile and a constant thin boundary layer thickness to model the drag force on the fluid, the other approximating the drag using the fully-developed laminar velocity profile for a locally uniform film. A linear stability analysis shows both models to be unstable to long waves or short wavenumbers, with a specific wavenumber in that range having a maximal growth rate. Numerical simulations confirm this instability and lead to nonlinear periodic traveling wave solutions which can be thought of as chains of identical droplets falling down the fiber. Physical experiments are also carried out on such a system using safflower oil as the working liquid and a taut fishing line as the fiber. A machine learning scheme is used to find the best set of parameters in the laminar flow model to match the experimental results to the simulations. Good agreement is found between the two, with parameter values that are quite close to their original estimates based on the approximate values of the physical parameters.

Abstract:We monitor the evaporation of a volatile liquid (ethanol) from an inkjet-printed liquid film, consisting of a mixture of ethanol and ethylene glycol. Interferometric video imaging technology is used for recording 2D vapor concentration profiles over the evaporating film. The vapor flow is reconstructed using numerical simulations. In this way, we reconstruct the complete flow velocity profile, and distinguish diffusive and convective gas transport flows, with quantitative tracking of the transport balances. The convective flows are driven by the buoyancy of the solvent vapor in the ambient air. In particular, we reconstruct the evaporation process from the interface of the two-component liquid. We monitor the evaporation flows, implement Raoult's and Henry's laws of vapor pressure reduction, as well as evaporation resistivity. We observe the edge-enhancement of evaporation flows at the wetting rims of the liquid film, and decompose the vapor flows in the diffusive and the convective contribution. We demonstrate how Langmuir's evaporation resistivity can be identified using vapor pressure profiles in the gas phase data and mass transfer balances.

Spreading of Low-viscosity Ink Filaments Driven by Bath Viscoelasticity in Embedded Printing

Abstract:Inks deposited in conventional direct ink writing need to be able to support their own weight and that of the upper layers with minimal deformation to preserve the structural integrity of the three-dimensional (3D) printed parts. This constraint limits the range of usable inks to high-viscosity materials. Embedded printing enables the use of much softer inks by depositing the materials in a bath of another fluid that provides external support, thus diversifying the types of 3D printable structures. The interactions between the ink and bath fluids, however, give rise to a unique type of defect: spreading of the dispensed ink behind the moving nozzle. By printing horizontal threads made of dyed water in baths of Carbopol suspensions, we demonstrate that the spreading can be attributed to the pressure field generated in the viscous bath by the relative motion of the nozzle. As the pressure gradient increases with the viscosity of the bath fluid while the viscosity of the ink resists the flow, a larger bath-to-ink viscosity ratio results in more spreading for low-concentration Carbopol baths. For high-concentration, yield-stress-fluid baths, we find that the steady-state viscosity alone cannot account for the spreading, as the elastic stress becomes comparable to the viscous stress and the bath fluid around the dispensed ink undergoes fluidization and resolidification. By parameterizing the transient rheology of the high-concentration Carbopol suspensions using a simple viscoelastic model, we suggest that the ink spreading is exacerbated by the elasticity but is mitigated by the yield stress as long as the yield stress is low enough to allow steady injection of the ink. These results help illuminate the link between the bath rheology and the printing quality in embedded 3D printing.

Abstract:An inkjet printer head, which is capable of depositing liquid droplets with a resolution of $22$ picoliters and high repeatability, is employed to investigate the wetting dynamics of drops printed on a horizontal plane as well as on a granular monolayer. For a sessile drop on a horizontal plane, we characterize the contact angle hysteresis, drop volume and contact line dynamics from side view images. We show that the evaporation rate scales with the dimension of the contact line instead of the surface area of the drop. We demonstrate that the system evolves into a closed cycle upon repeating the depositing-evaporating process, owing to the high repeatability of the printing facility. Finally, we extend the investigation to a granular monolayer in order to explore the interplay between liquid deposition and granular particles.

Abstract:In this Fluid Dynamics Videos submitted to the 31st Gallery of Fluid Motion, (find a different version here http://youtu.be/CS0c05WQ_js) we illustrate the special dynamics of capillary self-propelled Leidenfrost droplets in micrometric Ratchets. In order to be able to propel water droplets of sizes of the order of 1 mm, micro-ratchets were produced by direct material removal using a picosecond pulsed laser source. Surface micro-patterning with picosecond laser pulses allows creating a well controlled topography on a variety of substrates, with a resolution typically in the micron range. Abstract:Inkjet printing is an attractive method for patterning and fabricating objects across many areas of industry. There is a growing interest in the printing of inks with high particle-loading, such as inks containing glass frit, ceramic and functional inks. However, the use of these inks is often limited due to uncertainty regarding the impact of their rheology on the printing process. Understanding of the role of complex rheology in the jetting of loaded inks is therefore needed to facilitate the wider application of inkjet printing. Here, we characterize the complex rheology and the jetting of model dispersion inks (containing 10, 15, and 23 vol. % TiO2 nanoparticles) and compared them with those without particles. The jetting of the model fluids was conducted with a commercial inkjet printhead (nozzle diameter 34 μm) and visualized with stroboscopic and ultra-high-speed imaging. For low particle concentrations, droplet formation is generally similar to those of unloaded inks, provided their Ohnesorge number and Weber number are matched, although the filament of the loaded model fluid tends to have earlier break-off, having a shorter length. The jetting reliability decreased with increase in particle-loading until reliable jetting can no longer be achieved, due to local particle–particle interactions in the ink channel and in the filament during the fast extensional thinning process. A jetting map is presented which illustrates the influence of particle-loading on the droplet formation, and indicates that the acceptable range of Ohnesorge number for jetting is reduced as the particle-loading is increased.

Abstract:In this fluid dynamics video, Ray-tracing data visualization technique was used to obtain realistic and detailed flow motions during impinging of two liquid jets. Different patterns of sheet and rim configurations were presented to shed light into the underlying physics, including liquid chain, closed rim, open rim, unstable rim and flapping sheet. In addition, stationary asymmetrical waves were observed and compared with existing theories. The generation of stationary capillary wave in respect to the liquid rim were explained by the classic shallow water wave theory. The atomization process caused by development of the impact waves were observed in detail, including fragmentation of liquid sheet, formation of liquid ligaments, and breakup of ligament into droplet. The locking-on feature of the wavelength of impact wave were also found to be similar to that of perturbed free shear layers.

Abstract:This work provides a complete rheological characterization of 2D-inks in electric fields with different intensities and orientations to the imposed flow field. 2D nanomaterials used in this study are graphene nanoplatelets, hexagonal boron-nitride, and molybdenum disulfide. These materials with different electric properties are dispersed in a non-polar solvent (Toluene) with different concentrations of Ethyl Cellulose (EC), providing Newtonian or viscoelastic characteristics. Shear rheology tests show that the presence of nanoparticles barely changes the fluid behavior from the carrier fluid, and the application of an electric field perpendicular to the flow does not result in electrorheological behavior. However, extensional experiments, which mimic the actual EHD jet printing conditions, allowed the observation of the influence of both the particles and the electric field aligned on the filament thinning process. It was observed that the electric field generates vortices due to an electrophoretic effect in the carrier fluid when EC is present in the formulations, which has severe consequences on the stability of the liquid bridges, whereas it scarcely affects the shear viscosity; additionally, the kind of 2D nanoparticles modifies also the conductivity and permittivity of the solution, inducing Maxwell stresses that also make the filament more stable against surface tension.
