Abstract:In this letter, we study spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a periodically poled structure composed of two linearly uncoupled resonators that are nonlinearly coupled via a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The device does not require dispersion engineering to achieve efficient doubly-resonant SPDC and, unlike the case of a single resonator, one can reconfigure the system to generate photon pairs over a bandwidth of hundreds of nm. We consider the case of SPDC pumped at 775 nm in a periodically poled lithium-niobate (PPLN) device compatible with up-to-date technological platforms. We demonstrate pair generation rates of up to 250 MHz/mW pump power for a single resonance and integrated pair generation rates of up to 100 THz/mW pump power over 170 nm. When properly reconfigured, a single device can efficiently generate over a bandwidth of some 300 nm, covering the S, C, L, and U infrared bands.

Abstract:We propose a novel ultra-broadband reconfigurable photonic harmonic mixer functioning as a millimeter-wave down-converter for multigigabit wireless applications. Based on frequency conversion implemented by an optical frequency comb generator, the photonic mixer is able to operate up to 100GHz without high frequency RF components. The feasibility of the approach is experimentally validated by down-converting an up to 5Gbps fiber-wireless quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal from W-band (102.5GHz) to S-band (2.5GHz). The frequency response and the conversion efficiency are investigated. The experimental results show that the bandwidth of the proposed mixer is highly reconfigurable by adjusting the frequency comb generator.

Abstract:Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion (SPDC) holds a pivotal role in quantum physics, facilitating the creation of entangled photon pairs, heralded single photons and squeezed light, critical resources for many applications in quantum technologies. However, their production is highly sensitive to physical variations, posing limitations on their robust utility. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a method to significantly enhance the reliability of entangled photon pair generation. Our approach involves introducing a composite design scheme to the SPDC process. The design is based on the development of a theoretical composite segments framework for SU(1,1), offering increased error resilience and robustness of the process. We experimentally demonstrate its practical application by modulating the nonlinear coefficient of a KTP crystal for degenerate 532nm to 1064nm conversion resulting in an effectiveness of sevenfold improvement in stability of photon-pair generation and coincidence rate against temperature fluctuations compared to conventional quasi-phase-matching techniques. Furthermore, the presented concept is applicable to other physical systems that exhibit SU(1,1) dynamics. Our methodology represents a monumental leap forward in quantum technologies, significantly enhancing stability and error tolerance that pave the way for a new generation of entangled photons sources, holding immense promise for quantum information processing, communication, and precision measurement applications.

Abstract:We propose a new method to narrow the linewidth of entangled photons generated from spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). An internal Bragg grating is incorporated onto a nonlinear optical crystal waveguide. We study theoretically the spectral characteristics of SPDC under two Bragg grating structures. We show that using the Bragg grating with a midway pi-phase shifter, it is a promising way to generate narrow-line entangled photons.

Abstract:We have achieved broadband parametric generation by using a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO(3) crystal as frequency converter. Tuning wavelength rang from 0.609 microm to 5.208 microm, which covered three quasi-phase-matching processes, was obtained by means of changing the pump wavelength from 0.530 microm to 1.184 microm. The experiment results are in good agreement with theory. The maximum conversion efficiency is 62% with a 10 Hz-5 ns pump source, at the average pump power of 0.5 mW. Our results exhibit a possible application of quasi-periodic superlattice in laser technology.

Abstract:We theoretically present the bandwidth enhancement methods of the telecom-region entangled twin photons generated by quasi-phase-matched (QPM) spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystals. By using type I (e → e + e) SPDC, the degenerate entangled twin photons will have a broad bandwidth and it can be further enhanced by shortening the crystal length, detuning the pump wavelength or adjusting the working temperature of the PPLN crystal. This principle provides the possibility to introduce wavelength-division-multiplexed technique into quantum information systems.

Abstract:Based on quasi-phase-matching (QPM) theory, nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) are capable of realizing efficient spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) for the generation of photonic entangled states. However, the traditional electric field poling techniques employed in NPC fabrication often result in non-negligible processing errors of a few hundred nanometers, thus impeding the production of quantum photon pairs as intended. In this work, we investigate the SPDC photon pairs generated in a laser-poled lithium niobate (LN) NPC. By using the recently developed laser poling technique, the processing error of the NPC is substantially reduced to approximately 15 nm. Consequently, the coincidence counts of the generated photon pairs in the experiment reach 83.6% of the designed value. Our result paves the way for on-demand production of high-quality quantum sources, which has potential applications in quantum communications and quantum computations.

Abstract:Optical parametric amplification is a second-order nonlinear process whereby an optical signal is amplified by a pump via the generation of an idler field. It is the key ingredient of tunable sources of radiation that play an important role in several photonic applications. This mechanism is inherently related to spontaneous parametric down-conversion that currently constitutes the building block for entangled photon pair generation, which has been exploited in modern quantum technologies ranging from computing to communications and cryptography. Here we demonstrate single-pass optical parametric amplification at the ultimate thickness limit; using semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides, we show that amplification can be attained over a propagation through a single atomic layer. Such a second-order nonlinear interaction at the 2D limit bypasses phase-matching requirements and achieves ultrabroad amplification bandwidths. The amplification process is independent on the in-plane polarization of the impinging signal and pump fields. First-principle calculations confirm the observed polarization invariance and linear relationship between idler and pump powers. Our results pave the way for the development of atom-sized tunable sources of radiation with applications in nanophotonics and quantum information technology.

Abstract:Quasi-phase-matched parametric downconversion via cascaded optical nonlinearities in an aperiodically poled MgO:LiNbO3 superlattice was studied in theory and experiment. Due to the cascading effect and the abundant reciprocal structure in an aperiodic optical superlattice, multiple-wavelength parametric downconversion in a wide spectrum range can be obtained. Enhancement of the conversion efficiency and output stability through coupling of two nonlinear processes is demonstrated. The result also reveals that the cascaded parametric downconversion process can be used to efficiently downconvert the fundamental wavelength to a longer wavelength of the infrared region. The process can be additionally served as an efficient mechanism to enhance THz wave propagation in a nonlinear optical medium. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:We study the joint spectral properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal in a collinear, degenerate, type-II geometry. We show that the photonic crystal properties may be exploited to compensate for material dispersion and obtain photon pairs that are nearly factorable, in principle, for arbitrary materials and spectral regions, limited by the ability to fabricate the nonlinear crystal with the required periodic variation in the refractive indices for the ordinary and extraordinary waves.

Abstract:Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is a widely used process to prepare entangled photon pairs. In SPDC, a second-order nonlinear crystal is pumped by a coherent laser beam to generate photon pairs. The photon pairs are usually detected by single-mode fibers (SMF), where only photons in a Gaussian mode can be collected. The collection modes possess typical Gaussian parameters, namely a beam waist and a focal plane position. The collection efficiency of photons highly depends on the choice of both parameters. The exact focal plane position of the pump beam relative to those of the detection modes is difficult to determine in a real experiment. Usually, theoretical and experimental studies assume that the focal plane positions of the pump and the generated beams are positioned in the center of the crystal. The displacement of beam focal planes can lead to deviations from expected results and the coupling efficiency into SMF can increase or decrease. In this work, we consider variable positions of focal planes and investigate how shifts of these focal planes influence the spatial and temporal properties of photon pairs. We present SPDC arrangements, in which the knowledge of the exact position of the focal planes is essential, as well as scenarios, where focal plane displacements do not contribute significantly to experimental outcomes. These findings are of particular interest for achieving higher efficiency in SPDC experiments.

Broadband and Accurate Electric Tuning of On-Chip Efficient Nonlinear Parametric Conversion

Abstract:On-chip nonlinear photonic conversion functions with wide and precise tunability as well as high conversion efficiency are highly desirable for a wide range of applications. Photonic crystal micro-ring resonators (PhCR) facilitate efficient nonlinear conversion and enable wavenumber-accurate selection of converted optical modes, but do not support post-fabrication reconfiguration of these operational modes. Coupled-ring resonators, on the other hand, allows post-fabrication reconfiguration but suffers from ambiguity in mode selectivity. We propose a novel segmented photonic crystal micro-ring resonator featuring half-circumference gratings that decouples the locking between the grating Bragg reflection peak and micro-ring resonance frequencies. By introducing complementary thermos-optical controllers that allow differential tuning between the grating reflection peak and the micro-ring resonance, the device supports electrically reconfigurable wavenumber-accurate optical mode selectivity, experimentally demonstrated as a voltage-tunable, power-efficient optical parametric oscillator. The device demonstrates electric tuning of signal and idler frequencies both in a per-FSR stepwise manner and in a gap-free continuous manner, achieving a broad optical frequency tuning range of > 5 THz and a conversion efficiency of >25%. The novel approach introduces unprecedented design flexibility as well as high and precise reconfigurability to integrated nonlinear photonics, providing a new pathway towards future high-performance on-chip nonlinear light sources.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated concurrent parametric downconversion processes in a two-dimensional hexagonally poled lithium tantalate crystal. The substantial enhancement of parametric gain was observed when concurrent processes shared a common parametric beam. Both degenerate and nondegenerate concurrent parametric downconversion processes were studied. Analyses of the spatial forms and output angles showed a strong dependence on the working temperature, during which a well-defined beamlike parametric output was observed. Our results will stimulate the design for coherent high-gain generation of multiple parametric beams and also shed light on the compact engineering of path-entanglement with specific spatial forms based on concurrent spontaneous parametric downconversion processes.
