Abstract:On-chip nonlinear photonic conversion functions with wide and precise tunability as well as high conversion efficiency are highly desirable for a wide range of applications. Photonic crystal micro-ring resonators (PhCR) facilitate efficient nonlinear conversion and enable wavenumber-accurate selection of converted optical modes, but do not support post-fabrication reconfiguration of these operational modes. Coupled-ring resonators, on the other hand, allows post-fabrication reconfiguration but suffers from ambiguity in mode selectivity. We propose a novel segmented photonic crystal micro-ring resonator featuring half-circumference gratings that decouples the locking between the grating Bragg reflection peak and micro-ring resonance frequencies. By introducing complementary thermos-optical controllers that allow differential tuning between the grating reflection peak and the micro-ring resonance, the device supports electrically reconfigurable wavenumber-accurate optical mode selectivity, experimentally demonstrated as a voltage-tunable, power-efficient optical parametric oscillator. The device demonstrates electric tuning of signal and idler frequencies both in a per-FSR stepwise manner and in a gap-free continuous manner, achieving a broad optical frequency tuning range of > 5 THz and a conversion efficiency of >25%. The novel approach introduces unprecedented design flexibility as well as high and precise reconfigurability to integrated nonlinear photonics, providing a new pathway towards future high-performance on-chip nonlinear light sources.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The key problem that this paper attempts to solve is to achieve broadband and high - precision electrical tuning of the nonlinear optical conversion function on an integrated photonic chip while maintaining high conversion efficiency. Specifically, the research aims to overcome the following challenges in existing technologies: 1. **Precise control of mode selection**: Although traditional photonic - crystal micro - ring resonators (PhCR) can achieve efficient nonlinear conversion and precisely select the optical mode after conversion, their working modes cannot be reconfigured after manufacturing. 2. **Contradiction between broadband tunability and mode selection**: Although the coupled - ring resonator supports reconfiguration after manufacturing, it has a certain ambiguity in mode selection and is difficult to achieve precise control. To solve these problems, the authors propose a new type of segmented photonic - crystal micro - ring resonator (segmented PhCR). This design includes half - perimeter grating segments and introduces complementary thermo - optic controllers to achieve differential tuning between the Bragg reflection peak and the micro - ring resonance frequency. Through this method, the device can achieve wave - number - precise optical mode selection under voltage control and demonstrates broadband, continuously tunable nonlinear parameter conversion performance. ### Main innovation points - **Segmented photonic - crystal micro - ring resonator**: By introducing a grating structure on half of the circumference of the micro - ring, the locking relationship between the Bragg reflection peak and the micro - ring resonance frequency is decoupled, thereby achieving independent tuning. - **Complementary thermo - optic controllers**: Using two complementary thermo - optic controllers, broadband, gap - free continuous tuning of the signal and idler frequencies can be achieved without changing the pump frequency. - **Efficient nonlinear optical conversion**: Experiments have verified that the device achieves a conversion efficiency of more than 25% in a broadband tuning range above 5 THz, demonstrating its application potential in high - performance on - chip nonlinear light sources. ### Formula summary - **Frequency mismatch in the four - wave mixing process**: \[ \Delta\nu_{\text{FWM}} = 2(\nu_p\pm\beta)-\nu_s - \nu_i=\Delta\nu_{\text{FWM},0}\pm 2\beta \] where $\nu_p$ is the undisturbed pump mode frequency, $\nu_s$ and $\nu_i$ are the frequencies of the signal and idler modes respectively, $\beta$ is the mode splitting rate, and $\Delta\nu_{\text{FWM},0}$ is the frequency mismatch without mode splitting. - **Expression for the mode coupling rate**: \[ |\beta_m| = |C\cdot S(n)\delta(n - 2m)| \] where $S(n)$ is the spectral density in the spatial frequency domain, and $\delta(n)$ is the Kronecker delta function, representing the periodicity of the micro - ring. These innovations give the device unprecedented design flexibility and high reconfigurability in nonlinear optical conversion, providing a new approach for future high - performance on - chip nonlinear light sources.
