Abstract:Porous asphalt mixtures with steel slag (PAM-SS), as an eco-friendly and low-cost pavement material, are conducive to addressing the issue of urban floods and natural resource shortages. The primary objective of this paper was to explore the feasibility of the application of PAM-SS for seasonal frozen regions, and ascertain the optimal replacement percentage of natural aggregate. Steel slag coarse aggregate (SSCA) was used to replace basalt coarse aggregate (BCA) at four levels (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) by equal volume. The volume characteristics, mechanical properties, low-temperature cracking resistance, water stability, and freeze-thaw (F-T) durability of the mixture were assessed. The results indicated that the low-temperature cracking resistance of the mixture was significantly enhanced and acoustic emission (AE) energy was uniformly released by the incorporation of steel slag. Furthermore, the porosity, permeability, Marshall stability (MS), and the resistance against water damage and F-T cycles were also significantly improved. Based on the experimental results, the complete replacement of natural aggregate is advisable to obtain an optimal overall performance.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.

Abstract:Despite the efforts made during decades, pavement construction still uses essentially the same traditional model as that employed one hundred years ago. This makes road construction actions less efficient, thereby affecting the productivity and the possibilities of economic growth of the sector. To help establish a model based on the circular economy, but also to promote the implantation of the new technologies, the Laboratory of Construction Engineering of the University of Granada has created the conception of sustainable and smart asphalt materials named MASAI, which enable the combination of the most important sustainable techniques developed in last decades in a single material. This paper describes the main characteristics of MASAI and presents several of the experiences carried out in Spain that demonstrate their viability and great potential regarding the minimisation of the environmental impact of asphalt pavements and their adaptation to the future needs of users and administrators.

Abstract:Various researchers are developing efforts to integrate waste and by-products as alternative materials in road construction and maintenance, reducing environmental impacts and promoting a circular economy. Among the alternative materials that several authors have studied regarding their use as partial or total substitutes for natural aggregates in the asphalt paving industry, the steel slag aggregate (SSA) and recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) from construction demolition waste (CDW) stand out. This paper reviews and discusses the characteristics and performance of these materials when used as aggregates in asphalt mixtures. Based on the various studies analyzed, it was possible to conclude that incorporating SSA or RCA in asphalt mixtures for road pavements has functional, mechanical, and environmental advantages. However, it is essential to consider some possible drawbacks of these aggregates that are discussed in this paper, to define the acceptable uses of SSA and RCA as sustainable feedstocks for road paving works.

Abstract:Sustainable and resilient pavement infrastructure is critical for current economic and environmental challenges. In the past 10 years, the pavement infrastructure strongly supports the rapid development of the global social economy. New theories, new methods, new technologies and new materials related to pavement engineering are emerging. Deterioration of pavement infrastructure is a typical multi-physics problem. Because of actual coupled behaviors of traffic and environmental conditions, predictions of pavement service life become more and more complicated and require a deep knowledge of pavement material analysis. In order to summarize the current and determine the future research of pavement engineering, Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering (English Edition) has launched a review paper on the topic of “New innovations in pavement materials and engineering: A review on pavement engineering research 2021”. Based on the joint-effort of 43 scholars from 24 well-known universities in highway engineering, this review paper systematically analyzes the research status and future development direction of 5 major fields of pavement engineering in the world. The content includes asphalt binder performance and modeling, mixture performance and modeling of pavement materials, multi-scale mechanics, green and sustainable pavement, and intelligent pavement. Overall, this review paper is able to provide references and insights for researchers and engineers in the field of pavement engineering.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. Plain asphalt typically is an insulator to the flow of electric current. It can be modified to conductive asphalt by adding various recyclable and environment-friendly conductive additives in it. Such asphalt can provide smart and multifunctional environmentally sustainable applications in the pavement industry. Its production and performance behavior parameters are, however, yet to be entirely understood. This study presents a review of literature on conductive asphalt using systematic literature review and scientometric analysis techniques to holistically understand conductive asphalt and current research developments in this field. The objective was to perform a critical review and scientometrically characterize the published research studies. Literature was acquired from credible research databases for the study duration from 2009 to 2022, and these were subsequently using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) protocol to identify the most relevant documents. Sixty-two bibliographic articles were consequently selected for the study. Systematic review identified the research themes and techniques adopted in the field of conductive asphalt technology, and the scientometric analysis quantified the characteristics of the articles. VOSViewer was utilized for visualizing the key findings of the quantitative analysis. Development of conductive asphalt has great research potential and improving its piezoresistivity and conductive network is the future research focus of smart asphalt technology. An experimental study was also conducted, and the results were presented. A dataset of 75 Marshall asphalt specimens of various mix proportions was compiled to assess the Marshall parameters, volumetrics, and their electrical resistivity. 60/70 penetration grade bitumen was used along with five waste tire metal fiber based modified asphalt mixes with contents 0%, 0.375%, 0.75%, 1.125%, and 1.5%. This review, along with experimental investigations, provided an in-depth understanding of conductive asphalt concrete's behavior, the emerging trends to support future studies, and helped to identify the current major research themes and the corresponding challenges.

A comparative environmental life cycle assessment of road asphalt pavement solutions made up of artificial aggregates

Abstract:The construction and maintenance of road pavements entail detrimental impacts on the consumption of resources and damage to the natural environment but also make up an opportunity for the large-scale application of circular economy principles and innovative waste valorisation paths. The present study focuses on developing a comprehensive procedure to evaluate the technical and environmental sustainability of replacing high percentage of limestone aggregates with artificial aggregates from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) into hot or cold recycled asphalt mixtures for asphalt pavements. The technical feasibility of the designed mixtures was investigated in terms of the main physical and mechanical properties of both the raw materials and the asphalt mixtures with content of artificial aggregates or sand in the range 25-40 % by mass. The environmental feasibility of the asphalt mixtures was evaluated through the SEM-EDS technique, the analysis of the eluate of the leaching test and the ecotoxicity for living organisms. Afterwards, the life cycle assessment (LCA) was applied to detect the critical spots of the life cycle of 1 m2 of a 6 cm-thick binder layer with high percentage of artificial aggregates or sand built and maintained through 30 years analysis period according to 18 impact category indicators. The main results show that, recycling the artificial aggregates into hot asphalt mixtures has on average a negligible effect on the overall environmental performance of the life cycle, and appears to be detrimental only for the consumption of fossil resources due to the higher optimum bitumen content. Looking at the results for cold mixes, the introduction of the artificial aggregates has an effect on the predicted durability of the asphalt layers, which is maximized in the case of coarse artificial aggregates. Consequent environmental benefits regard the global warming potential, fossil resource scarcity and freshwater eutrophication indicators.

Abstract:As a vital and integral component of transportation infrastructure, pavement has a direct and tangible impact on socio-economic sustainability. In recent years, an influx of groundbreaking and state-of-the-art materials, structures, equipment, and detection technologies related to road engineering have continually and progressively emerged, reshaping the landscape of pavement systems. There is a pressing and growing need for a timely summarization of the current research status and a clear identification of future research directions in these advanced and evolving technologies. Therefore, Journal of Road Engineering has undertaken the significant initiative of introducing a comprehensive review paper with the overarching theme of “advanced road materials, structures, equipment, and detection technologies”. This extensive and insightful review meticulously gathers and synthesizes research findings from 39 distinguished scholars, all of whom are affiliated with 19 renowned universities or research institutions specializing in the diverse and multidimensional field of highway engineering. It covers the current state and anticipates future development directions in the four major and interconnected domains of road engineering: advanced road materials, advanced road structures and performance evaluation, advanced road construction equipment and technology, and advanced road detection and assessment technologies.

Abstract:Cement-asphalt pavements are extensively employed in transportation infrastructure. Multifunctional pavement is a new paradigm that enhances pavement functionalities, durability, and serviceability for intelligent transport system. Cement-asphalt composite possesses significant attributes, including self-healing, self-sensing, photocatalytic, and thermochromic capacities, which collectively contribute to the multifunctionalities of these pavements. The self-healing property plays a vital role in extending the service life of pavement and enhancing its durability. At the same time, self-sensing concrete, a concept widely explored for structural health monitoring, finds its applications. The photocatalytic feature aids in reducing pollution stemming from vehicle emissions, while the thermochromic capacity allows for temperature detection in asphalt concrete pavements. Previous research has mainly concentrated on the discrete attributes and performance of these functionalities within cement-asphalt composite. Achieving these multifunctional capabilities involves the incorporation of diverse carbon nanomaterials into cement-asphalt composite, such as carbon black (CB), carbon nanofibers (CNFs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene nanoplates (GNPs), and so on. Notably, there is an increasing focus on integrating these functionalities within pavements themselves. Functional concrete has been effectively deployed within smart transport system, encompassing pavements, railways, bridges, and tunnels, for the purposes of infrastructure health monitoring and traffic-flow management. This review comprehensively examines recent advances in multifunctional technologies, highlighting potential applications across novel domains. The insights will serve as a valuable resource for future investigations into multifunctional pavements and their integration into intelligent transport systems.

Abstract:Porous asphalt (PA) is a distinct mixture type that deliberately designed with stone-on-stone contact of the coarse aggregate fraction and high percentage of interconnected air voids to provide water drainage and adequate resistance to both raveling and permanent deformation. During the past decades, PA has attracted much attention in the worldwide. Many studies have been conducted to confirm numerous benefits in terms of safety, comfort and environment. However, the acceptance of PA appears to have some sort of diminished when defects with durability and winter maintenance became a serious practical issue and overtaken by environmental concerns in recent years. Now this dilemma seems to be partially improved, several limitations have gradually ameliorated due to the progress of materials and test methods. While some additional problems are also exposed in the meantime. Therefore, it is necessary to present a comprehensive review of existing research to clarify the challenges that currently being encountered. The content of this article mainly includes international experience and four important aspects of PA mixture design, as well as the favorable contributing factors affecting each design process. In different sections, achievements including the advantages and shortcomings in each branch have been discussed and suggestions also have been put forward expecting to identify corresponding areas of study for future improvement, thus provide references for the next phase of field application of PA pavement.

Abstract:The secondary utilization of steel slag is significant for land occupation reduction, natural aggregate conservation, and environmental protection. This study aims to enhance the utilization of steel slag aggregate (SSA) in pavement engineering by providing guidance on selecting efficient and rapid pre-treatment methods. It compares the macroscopic morphological characteristics of basalt, SSA, and SSA prepared using various pre-treatment methods. The chemical composition and surface micromorphology of the samples were investigated by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of the pre-treatment methods on the SSA and the performance of its asphalt mixture were comparatively evaluated based on laboratory tests. The carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2 e) and cost associated with steel slag asphalt mixtures were quantified in this study. The findings revealed that the high angularity and roughness of the SSA make it an ideal candidate for use in pavement layer aggregates. Pre-treatment methods such as thermal water and acetic acid soaking expedited the hydration and oxidation reactions. Furthermore, applying a silane coupling agent resulted in the forming of a polymer membrane on the SSA surface, significantly enhancing its volume stability and adhesive properties. All these methods present compelling alternatives to natural aging. Compared with the original SSA, the performance of asphalt mixtures prepared using pretreated SSA was optimized, particularly concerning the volumetric stability and moisture damage resistance. In general, although the CO 2 e from using SSA for pavement construction increased compared to those using other substances, the CO 2 e was significantly lower than those from SSA lying idle, which positively impacts the alleviation of SSA accumulation and promotes sustainable development.

Abstract:In last years, a new type of pavement has gained popularity, this type is called Semi-Flexible Pavement (SFP). It consists of porous asphalt with high air voids between (25-35) % filled with cementitious grout materials. This type of pavement substance offers substantial advantages over both common types of pavements (concrete and flexible) such as good resistance to rutting and durability. SFP is considered an alternative pavement to exceed the drawbacks that occur for both flexible and concrete pavements. SFP has good features against permanent deformation, oil spillage, and fatigue resistance. Previous studies have shown that it can be used in a variety of applications such as highways, motorways, bridge deck pavement, tunnels, industrial areas with industrial equipment traffic, airport aprons, and stations. The goal of this research is to identify and compile the most significant research papers using the Web of Science (WOS), analyze the data using the VOS viewer software, as well as learn which countries and institutions had published the most articles relating to the subject of cementitious grout material as it relates to semi-flexible. It was also done to learn more about the authors and their collaboration. In addition to knowing the keywords that will aid researchers in their research on this topic, using these studies to better understand the elements that affect how well semi-flexible mixtures and grouts perform such as porous asphalt Mixture gradation and grout material components.

Abstract:Anti-icing asphalt pavement (AIAP) with salt-storage additive (SSA) has been developed and researched for decades with the aim to provide support for winter road maintenance in cold regions. This paper presents a comprehensive review of literature and synthesizes the state of the art research and technological developments of SSA incorporated into AIAP. The focus is placed on recent advances in anti-icing fundamentals of asphalt pavement with SSA, the classification and anti-icing characterization of SSA, and the effects of SSA on the anti-icing performance and engineering properties of asphalt pavement. This pavement apparently improves driving conditions on roads by facilitating the removal of snow and ice, but the addition of SSA may compromise the engineering properties of asphalt pavement. Other limitations of AIAP with SSA include difficulty in controlling the release rate of salt chemicals, extending the anti-icing service life, and making anti-icing effective at low temperatures; these merit in-depth studies in future work. One can envision that the pavement can be engineered to achieve balanced performances in anti-icing, mechanical properties, and durability, through better design and control of the microstructures and interfaces in the composite matrix.
Structural behavior of the geothermo-electrical asphalt pavement: A critical review concerning climate change

Abstract:Particularly for asphalt pavement, where the temperature is a crucial driver in selecting construction materials, premature infrastructure failure and higher maintenance costs might be highly expected with the recently witnessed dramatic changes in climate. Numerous studies highlighted how the recent climate change might result in hazards to transportation infrastructure and affect all types of transportation modes. On the flip side, flexible pavement also contributes to global warming; various studies referred to the significant emissions percentages released by asphalt pavement upon subjection to solar radiation. With that in mind, several studies showed that the environmentally-friendly geothermal systems that mainly depend on heat exchanging with the soil have positive influences on reducing energy consumption, melting the ice on roadways in cold climates, or reducing the ambient temperature and the induced latent heat from the pavement in hot climates. However, very limited studies explored the influence of those geothermal systems on the structural behavior of the pavement concerning the associated distresses with extreme climate changes. In this paper, a critical review concerning climate change has been performed to investigate the structural performance and the associated distress of both conventional and geothermal asphalt pavement. This review underlines several advantageous physical and mechanical characteristics of geothermal pavement, which may recommend this system as a worthwhile alternative to conventional asphalt pavement. The paper also identified future research needs to overcome the shortcomings associated with the structural performance of the geothermo-electrical asphalt pavement.
Investigation of the Performance of the Ecofriendly Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Mixture as a Sustainable Pavement Material

Abstract:This article presents a study to evaluate the performance of the ecofriendly calcium sulfate whisker fiber- (CSWF-) reinforced asphalt mixture as a sustainable pavement material. Asphalt mixtures containing 0.2 wt.%, 0.4 wt.%, 0.6 wt.%, and 0.8 wt.% of the CSWF were designed by the Marshall method. Asphalt mixtures without fiber were also prepared as control samples. The Marshall test, wheel-tracking test, low-temperature bending test, water sensitivity test, and fatigue test were conducted to evaluate the performance of the CSWF asphalt mixture. And the mechanism of fiber reinforcement was discussed. The results showed that the CSWF could improve the high-temperature stability and low-temperature crack resistance of the asphalt mixture. Water stability of asphalt mixtures in the presence of the CSWF was also improved. When the CSWF content was 0.4 wt.% of the total mixture, the performance of the asphalt mixture is the best. Compared with the conventional asphalt mixture, the CSWF asphalt mixture not only utilized power plant waste effectively to preserve ecosystems but also improved the performance of the pavement, which is suggested to be used in sustainable pavement construction and rehabilitation.

Abstract:Electrically conductive asphalt concrete (ECAC) is an innovative material that offers numerous possibilities by directly incorporating functional additives (such as metal-based or carbon-based materials) into asphalt binder and mixing it with traditional aggregates and mineral filler. With such a strategy, ECAC possesses a high electrical/thermal conductivity, making it an ideal candidate for sustainable repair methods based on induced heating-healing, snow and ice melting systems on pavements, and piezoresistive sensors for traffic detection in pavement engineering. This paper aims to provide a systematic review of the design and development of ECAC, with a particular focus on the advancements made over the past decade (from 2013 to 2023). The review begins by introducing the composition and fundamental principles underlying ECAC. Subsequently, it summarizes the key aspects related to the design and preparation of ECAC. Moreover, this paper delves into the remarkable multi-functionality exhibited by ECAC, showcasing its potential in practical applications. Through examining various case studies, the review highlights the successful utilization of ECAC in diverse scenarios. This review work can serve as a valuable resource, offering insights and guidance for developing ECAC in the context of smart and sustainable pavement construction.
