Abstract:One of the failure mechanisms associated with asphalt paving layers, especially on steel deck bridges, is large permanent deformation, which adversely affects its long-term performance in service. Thus, epoxy resin was introduced in asphalt paving industry to tackle permanent deformation of asphalt mixtures due to its thermosetting nature. In this review, epoxy resin as a dominant component of the epoxy-asphalt composite system was first considered, followed by a discussion on its curing methods and curing mechanism. Furthermore, the physicochemical property and mechanical performance of epoxy asphalt and epoxy asphalt mixture were thoroughly examined. Crosslink density of epoxy asphalt dictates its viscosity and thus the allowable construction time. Phase separation and dispersion of asphalt particles in the epoxy matrix was observed for epoxy-asphalt composite, and it showed superior elastic behavior and deformation resistance capability when compared with conventional asphalt materials. Furthermore, epoxy asphalt mixture exhibited significantly higher compressive strength, much better rutting resistance, and superior durability and water resistance properties. However, its low-temperature cracking resistance was slightly compromised.
Quantitative Evaluation on the Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Characteristics of Warm Mix Asphalt Mixtures

Abstract:In response to global environmental protection policies, and the imperatives of achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology garnered increasing prominence in the field of pavement engineering. This study conducted a quantitative assessment of the energy-saving and emission reduction characteristics of WMA mixtures throughout their lifecycle, encompassing the production and construction phases. To achieve this, 70# asphalt, SBS modified asphalt, Alube@, and ACMP@ WMA mixtures were selected, and their optimal mixing temperatures were determined through the rigorous variable speed mixing test. We formulated calculation models for energy consumption and carbon emissions at each stage, and incorporated a self-developed variable temperature emission test to measure the CO2 emissions resulting from asphalt heating volatilization. The findings revealed that the two warm mix additives effectively lowered the mixing temperature of 70# asphalt mixture by 25-26 degrees C. Comparatively, it was estimated that WMA mixtures exhibited reductions in energy consumption ranging from 16.5 % to 23.0 %, 11.3 % to 36.5 %, and 15.4 % to 47.4 % during the raw material heating, mixing, and compaction processes, respectively, when compared with the two hot mix asphalt (HMA) counterparts. Moreover, the noteworthy reductions in carbon emissions stemming from fuel combustion and asphalt heating volatilization were observed for the WMA mixtures. On-site measurements further corroborated that the WMA mixtures clearly manifested pronounced energy-saving and emission-reduction effects during the production and spreading phases. In conclusion, WMA is an environmentally friendly technology with promising prospects for widespread applications.

Abstract:To study the dynamic response of saturated asphalt pavement under moving load and temperature load, 3-D finite element models for asphalt pavements with hydro-mechanical coupling and thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling were built based on the porous media theory and Biot theory. First, the asphalt pavement structure was considered as an ideal saturated fluid-solid biphasic porous medium. Following this, the spatial distribution and the change law of the pore-water pressure with time, the transverse stress, and the vertical displacement response of the asphalt pavement under different speeds, loading times, and temperatures were investigated. The simulation results show that both the curves of the effective stress and the pore-water pressure versus the external loads have similar patterns. The damage of the asphalt membrane is mainly caused by the cyclic effect of positive and negative pore-water pressure. Moreover, the peak value of pore-water pressure is affected by the loading rate and the loading time, and both have positive exponential effects on the pore-water pressure. In addition, the transverse stress of the upper layer pavement is deeply affected by the temperature load, which is more likely to cause as transverse crack in the pavement, resulting in the formation of temperature cracks on the road surface. The vertical stress at the middle point in the upper layer of the saturated asphalt pavement, under the action of the temperature load and the driving load, shows a single peak.

Abstract:Both temperature fluctuations and migrations in frozen zone distribution resulting from climate change can influence fatigue cracking in asphalt pavement. This study focused on seven provinces in China, utilising climate prediction data from 2021 to 2100 to analyse temperature variations and frozen zone migrations over the next 80 years. The study calculated the fatigue cracking of asphalt pavements on freeways and secondary roadways under the influence of these two factors. Additionally, a Fatigue Cracking Climate Index (FCCI) was introduced to reflect the extent of climate change impact on fatigue cracking. Research findings indicate that the rising temperatures associated with climate change adversely affect fatigue cracking. Conversely, the migration of frozen zones tends to alleviate this adverse impact. Overall, fatigue cracking is gradually exacerbated under the influence of climate change. In the region of interest, a majority of the asphalt pavements experience negative effects from climate change on fatigue cracking.

Abstract:Under low-temperature conditions in winter, asphalt pavement is prone to cracking, icing and other distresses, which affect its safety and comfort. Therefore, by incorporating phase-change materials into asphalt and conducting relevant performance studies, the aim is to alleviate low-temperature distress and regulate road surface temperature and expand the application of phase-change materials in asphalt pavement. We mixed the selected phase-change materials with different dosages into the matrix asphalt to prepare phase-change temperature-regulating asphalt and tested the four basic indicators: road performance, latent heat characteristics, temperature-regulating performance, and rheological properties of phase-change asphalt and its mixture. The research results indicate that with the increase in phase-change material content, the penetration, softening point, ductility, and dynamic viscosity of phase-change high-viscosity asphalt gradually increase. Under the constant temperature test conditions of −2.5 °C and −5 °C, the surface icing speed of asphalt binder specimens mixed with phase-change materials is slower than that of specimens without phase-change materials. Adding phase-change materials can improve the high-temperature and low-temperature PG grading of high-viscosity asphalt, effectively improving its high-temperature rutting resistance and low-temperature cracking performance. According to the temperature regulation test results, phase-change temperature-regulating asphalt has a certain regulating effect on temperature under low-temperature conditions, which can slow down the cooling rate of asphalt, reduce the thermal conductivity of permeable asphalt mixture by more than 50%, increase the temperature regulation rate by more than 30%, and improve the ice-melting and snow-melting ability by more than 20%. Phase-change materials have almost no effect on the porosity of permeable asphalt mixtures and can effectively improve the water stability, low-temperature crack resistance, and antiflying performance of permeable asphalt mixtures. Their Marshall stability and rutting stability decrease, but still meet the requirements of the specifications. Applying phase-change materials to permeable asphalt pavement can automatically adjust the temperature of the pavement, reduce the cooling rate of the asphalt pavement during cooling, alleviate the problem of snow and ice accumulation on the asphalt pavement in winter, and thereby improve the performance of permeable asphalt pavement against freeze–thaw cycles.

Abstract:The environmental concerns of global warming and energy consumption are among the most severe issues and challenges facing human beings worldwide. Due to the relatively higher predicted temperatures (150-180 °C), the latest research on pavement energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission assessment mentioned contributing to higher environmental burdens such as air pollution and global warming. However, warm-mix asphalt (WMA) was introduced by pavement researchers and the road construction industry instead of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) to reduce these environmental problems. This study aims to provide a comparative overview of WMA and HMA from environmental and economic perspectives in order to highlight the challenges, motivations, and research gaps in using WMA technology compared to HMA. It was discovered that the lower production temperature of WMA could significantly reduce the emissions of gases and fumes and thus reduce global warming. The lower production temperature also provides a healthy work environment and reduces exposure to fumes. Replacing HMA with WMA can reduce production costs because of the 20-75% lower energy consumption in WMA production. It was also released that the reduction in energy consumption is dependent on the fuel type, energy source, material heat capacity, moisture content, and production temperature. Other benefits of using WMA are enhanced asphalt mixture workability and compaction because the additives in WMA reduce asphalt binder viscosity. It also allows for the incorporation of more waste materials, such as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). However, future studies are recommended on the possibility of using renewable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective materials such as biomaterials as an alternative to conventional WMA-additives for more sustainable and green asphalt pavements.

Abstract:Rutting is one of the most common types of asphalt pavement failures. This study has investigated the high temperature performance of asphalt binders incorporating graphene oxide (GO). To this end, frequency sweep, temperature sweep, and multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) were conducted on the control and GO-modified asphalt binders. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on a statistical model was used to investigate the interactive effects of three parameters, namely temperature, GO content, and loading frequency, on the rutting performance of the GO-modified asphalt and develop predictive mathematical models. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to observe the microstructure of the binders. The results of the rheological tests showed that GO considerably enhanced the high temperature performance of the asphalt binder. The MSCR test results revealed that in comparison with the control asphalt, the GO modified binders presented lower nonrecoverable creep compliance (Jnr) and higher percent recovery (R) values, showing a significant contribution of the GO to rutting resistance. The statistical analysis showed that the selected input variables exhibited a notable impact on the complex modulus (G*) and rutting behavior (G*/sin delta) of the asphalt, and quadratic models were proposed for predicting the rutting potential. Finally, the AFM analysis demonstrated that GO was perfectly distributed in the asphalt matrix. (C) 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers.
Thermal-Mechanical Coupling Analysis of Permeable Asphalt Pavements

Abstract:In order to clarify the mechanical response of permeable asphalt pavements under a temperature effect, the mechanical responses of different types of permeable asphalt pavements, which were based on a self-developed drainage SBS-modified asphalt mixture with fiber, were simulated using ANSYS finite element software(APDL 19.2). The influence of temperature and temperature change on the mechanical behavior of the permeable asphalt pavements was studied, and the mechanical responses of the pavements at different driving speeds was analyzed. The results show that the extreme values of surface deflection, compressive strain of the soil foundation top surface, and the shear stress and tensile stress of the upper-layer bottom of the three kinds of pavements under dynamic load were about 10% smaller than those under static loads, and the extreme values under different temperature conditions were 28%~50% larger than the values obtained without different temperature conditions. During the 12 h heating process, the mechanical indexes of the three types of pavements with axle loads were consistent with the change law of temperature, and the peak values of the mechanical indexes under dynamic loads were smaller than those under static loads. In addition, the mechanical indexes of the three types of pavements under dynamic loads had the same law of change with speed under the same conditions, and the values were less than the extreme values under static loads, but the degree of influence was different.

Abstract:<p>Pavement design and management practices must be adapted in response to future climate change. While many studies have attempted to identify different methods to adapt pavements to future climate conditions, the potential economic impacts of the adaptations still remain largely unquantified. This study presents the results of a comprehensive life‐cycle cost analysis (LCCA) aimed at quantifying the potential economic impacts of a climate adaptation method, in which an upgraded asphalt binder (Performance Grade PG 76‐22) is used in the construction and maintenance of flexible pavement sections in lieu of the original binder (PG 70‐22) for improved resistance against high temperatures. For each of three major Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) districts with different climates, three case studies consisting of typical interstate, primary, and secondary pavement sections were considered. The LCCA accounted for the costs incurred during the mixture's production, maintenance, and use phases of the pavement life cycle by explicitly considering future climate projections, pavement life‐cycle performance, maintenance effects, and work zone user delays. The study concludes that pavements using the upgraded binder not only perform better over time but are also economically advantageous compared to those with the original binder under the conditions of the anticipated future climate conditions (2020–2039).</p>

Abstract:During the construction and maintenance of asphalt pavement, a lot of non-renewable resources are consumed, which discharge a variety of waste gasses and smoke, causing a serious impact on the environment. Reducing society's reliance on non-renewable resources is therefore key to improving sustainability. It is found that phase change materials (PCMs), as environmentally friendly materials, can spontaneously store and release heat energy by changing the phase state, thus reducing the adverse effect of temperature on asphalt pavement, reducing the occurrence of high-temperature stress, minimizing the cost of road construction and maintenance, and saving resources. In order to promote the application of PCMs in asphalt pavement, to promote self-controlling temperature technology for asphalt pavement, and to improve the sustainable development of asphalt pavement, this paper reviews the research status of PCMs in asphalt pavement, both domestically and abroad. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the modified asphalt binder can reach 0.29–0.39 W/mK, and the thermal diffusivity can reach 0.2–0.3 mm2/s, but the influence on the viscosity of the asphalt is limited, and both are less than 2000CP. The durability and thermal stability of the modified asphalt mixture are improved, and the maximum temperature can be lowered by 9 °C, which effectively reduces the occurrence of hightemperature stress. This review will help to better understand the function of PCMs and promote the sustainable development of green and environmentally friendly asphalt pavement.

Abstract:The design of flexible road pavements is a complex process as a result of the multiple variables that influence and interact in the models that allow the design of each layer. In recent years, a particular interest has been raised to ensure that climate is considered in pavement design due to temperature and precipitation that influence the deterioration of pavements, impacting their service life. This paper presents a critical review of flexible pavement design methods, from the first ones based on experience, such as empirical methods, to the most recent ones on mechanical–empirical methodologies, where, based on different principles, they determine the thicknesses of the layers that integrate the structure of a pavement to identify how these methods have included climate variables within their methodology. Through this review, it was identified that temperature is incorporated in the dynamic modulus of the asphalt mix, and precipitation and moisture are incorporated through the resilient modulus in the granular layers (base, subbase, and foundation soil or subgrade courses). As a result, it was identified that the most holistic way of integrating climate is through the Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM) from the Mechanistic–Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). In many cases, climate is incorporated through parameters whose behavior is associated with temperature and precipitation but does not use the data of these climate variables directly from the project site. The practical incorporation of climate into design methods allows an increase in the certainty of results, ensuring additional climate-resilient pavement structures and increasing their durability and sustainability during their service life.

Abstract:Highway construction strategies impact the early damage of asphalt pavement and its sustainability. The pavement quality is directly influenced by the temperature segregation of the mixture during transportation, which has rarely been investigated. Low-temperature transportation strategies for highway pavement are proposed by assessing the temperature variations in the mixture through field tests. The extreme condition of winter construction is considered, and the effects of insulation materials are considered in laboratory and field tests. A 3D Multiphysics Coupling Finite Element model is developed in COMSOL to analyse the heat transfer mechanism. The vehicle speed, thermal conductivity and ambient temperatures are considered in this parametric study. The economic efficiency of intelligent transportation is improved by optimising the effective area and the thickness of insulation materials. This study aims to propose economic strategies to avoid the temperature segregation of pavement materials and to explore more environmentally friendly insulation measures for low-temperature highway constructions.

Abstract:Conductive asphalt concrete with high thermal conductivity has been proposed to improve the solar energy collection and snow melting efficiencies of asphalt solar collector (ASC). This paper aims to provide some insight into choosing the basic materials for preparation of conductive asphalt concrete, as well as determining the evolution of thermal characteristics affected by environmental factors. The thermal properties of conductive asphalt concrete were studied by the Thermal Constants Analyzer. Experimental results showed that aggregate and conductive filler have a significant effect on the thermal properties of asphalt concrete, while the effect of asphalt binder was not evident due to its low proportion. Utilization of mineral aggregate and conductive filler with higher thermal conductivity is an efficient method to prepare conductive asphalt concrete. Moreover, change in thermal properties of asphalt concrete under different temperature and moisture conditions should be taken into account to determine the actual thermal properties of asphalt concrete. There was no noticeable difference in thermal properties of asphalt concrete before and after aging. Furthermore, freezing-thawing cycles strongly affect the thermal properties of conductive asphalt concrete, due to volume expansion and bonding degradation.

Addressing Climate Change Resilience in Pavements: Major Vulnerability Issues and Adaptation Measures

Abstract:Climate change is the one of the greatest challenges of our time, and it poses a threat to the surrounding built and natural environments. This review paper addresses climate change resilience in pavements by considering major vulnerability issues and adaptation measures. First, a review on foundational information of climate change related to transportation infrastructure is provided to bring all transportation professionals and practitioners to the same knowledge base on climate change terminology. Such information includes sources of climate information, climate scenarios, downscaling climate data, and uncertainty in climate projection information. Relevant climate stressors to pavements are discussed in some depth, including the most significant ones, which are increases in temperature and precipitation intensity. Thus, the proposed different engineering-informed adaptation measures relevant to the climate stressors of interest were evidence-based with reference to published peer-reviewed articles and case studies. Such adaptation solutions are related to monitoring pavement key performance parameters and pavement adaptations in structural design, robust materials and mix design, along with adaptation in maintenance, regulation, and construction. Efforts to adapt pavement systems to climate change are ongoing. In addition to such research works, this study concludes that impacts of adaptation measures on pavement and environment should be incorporated in the decision-making process in planning and design. This makes it important to integrate practical adaptation strategies in design and construction standards and guides, and implement awareness and education of climate change adaptation among engineers and practitioners.

Abstract:The use of latent heat storage capacity from phase change material (PCM) to regulate asphalt pavement temperature is an innovative way to mitigate temperature-related pavement distresses, such as thermal cracking and rutting. In this review, a detailed discussion on the classification and incorporation methods of PCM in asphalt mixture is presented. Further, the physical and chemical performances of PCM modified asphalts were reviewed, followed by their thermal and mechanical properties. It was observed that temperature related performance of asphalt mixtures can be well controlled in the phase change temperature range. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and n-Tetradecane have been generally used to regulate the high and low temperatures of asphalt pavement, respectively. Mixed results were obtained on rheological properties of binders with PCMs as well as on road performance properties of asphalt mixtures with PCMs. It is important to note that PCMs with high latent heat and thermal conductivity are preferred for effective thermal regulation.

Abstract:The global climate is currently changing remarkably. Rising temperatures intensify the likelihood of rutting in asphalt pavements. This research, covering seven Chinese provinces from 2021 to 2100, predicts asphalt pavement rutting depth on freeways and secondary roadways for the next 80 years. The study introduced the Rutting Climate Change Index to gauge climate change impact on pavement rutting. It examined regional variations in climate's effect on pavement rutting and associated factors. The results indicate that both longitude and latitude significantly influence the Rutting Climate Change Index for asphalt pavement rutting distress. With increasing longitude, the impact of climate change on rutting distress in asphalt pavement exhibits diverse patterns across different regions. The influence of climate change on rutting distress in asphalt pavement increases with higher latitudes. The regional variations in the impact of climate change on rutting distress in asphalt pavements are more pronounced along the latitude.

Abstract:Flexible pavement design requires considering a variety of factors including the materials used, variations in water tables, traffic levels, and the climatic conditions the road will experience over its lifetime. Most pavement designs are based on historical climate variables such as temperature and precipitation that are already changing across much of the United States, and do not reflect projected trends. As pavements are typically designed to last 20 years or more, designs that do not account for current and future trends can result in reduced performance. However, incorporating climate projections into pavement design is not a trivial exercise. Significant mismatches in both spatial and temporal scale challenge the integration of the latest global climate model simulations into pavement models. This study provides a national-level overview of what the impact of climate change to flexible pavement could look like, and where regional focus should be placed. It also demonstrates a new approach to developing high-resolution spatial and temporal projections that generates hourly information at the scale of individual weather stations, and applies this as input to the AASHTOWare Pavement ME DesignTM model. The impact of three different future climates on pavement performance and time to reach failure thresholds in 24 locations across the United States are quantified. Changes to projected pavement performance differ by location, but nearly all result in decreased performance under current design standards. The largest increases in distress are observed for permanent deformation measures, especially toward the end of the century under greater increases in temperature.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the interaction and antiaging characteristics of composite phase change materials in asphalt for long-term temperature adjustment of asphalt pavement. First, the epoxy resin/phase change materials (E-PCMs) modified asphalt binders were prepared by the melt blending method, and their microscopic, rheological, and temperature adjustment properties were tested. Finally, the long-term performance of the modified asphalt binders was evaluated by simulated aging. The results show that E-PCMs are well dispersed in the modified asphalt binders. E-PCMs can improve the temperature sensitivity and high-temperature stability of asphalt binders, and they could reduce the fluidity of asphalt molecules at high-temperature. The extreme temperature of the E-PCMs–modified asphalt binders can be reduced by 10.4°C and have an excellent temperature adjustment effect. The aged modified asphalt binders still have excellent temperature adjustment properties, and the survival rate of phase change enthalpy is 88%. E-PCMs could also prevent the oxidative aging of asphalt molecules and reduce the adverse effects of the photothermal environment on asphalt. It provides reference and basis for the large-scale promotion and application of temperature-adjusting pavement, which reduces the temperature disease of asphalt pavement and the near-surface thermal environment.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, ABAQUS finite-element software is used to establish an asphalt pavement structure model under high-temperature environment in summer. The changes in the temperature field and moisture concentration field of asphalt pavement are studied under the condition of 1-day continuous temperature change. The creep model is used to analyse the influence of ambient temperature and humidity on the rutting deformation of asphalt pavement. The results show that the maximum temperature of asphalt pavement can reach 60°C in the high-temperature environment in summer. The temperature accumulation effect causes the temperature of the middle and lower layers to increase by approximately 10°C, which easily induces rutting. Ambient humidity has a great influence on the change in moisture concentration in the upper layer. Considering the influence of ambient humidity in the high-temperature environment, the rut depth increases by 67%.

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:To explore the temperature distribution in width and depth of asphalt pavements with three different subgrade types, a numerical model is established. Based on actual meteorological data, the lateral temperature differences (LTDs) along the depth direction of pavement layers were analyzed under diurnal periodic thermal boundary conditions. Results reveal that the maximum LTD on the surface of a part-cut part-fill subgrade roadbed structure, as represented by a mountainous road, can reach 6.3 °C and 10.8 °C during winter and summer, respectively. The LTDs vary periodically with the boundary conditions. The LTDs on the road surface with high solar radiation in summer are 2.6–7.6 °C higher than those in winter. The influence ranges of the LTDs along the width direction of the road in winter and summer are 0–300 mm and 0–350 mm, respectively. This study provides a more precise method for studying the temperature field of road structures, which is helpful in analysing the pavement damage caused by thermal stress, etc. It also provides the necessary reference for the practical implementation of new technologies in the fields of asphalt pavement thermal energy storage systems and asphalt pavement temperature difference power generation.
