Abstract:Halide perovskite and perovskite-like materials have emerged as very promising optoelectronic materials in the field of X-ray detection, including both direct methods and indirect methods. Due to their remarkable performances, such as strong X-ray stopping capacity and cost-effective manufacturing, the research advances of perovskite X-ray detection have achieved significant progress and attracted lots of attention worldwide. Meanwhile, perovskite based X-ray imaging systems have been successfully demonstrated as well. In this review, we will firstly introduce some fundamental principles of X-ray detection and imaging, summarize the advances of X-ray detection and imaging based on novel metal halide semiconductors and scintillators, and finally put forward some issues and outlooks.

Abstract:One common configuration of PET detector modules is an array of scintillators, usually LYSO or its variant, coupled to multiple photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The objective of this work was to test the feasibility of measuring the performance of such detector module with the intrinsic radioactivity from the 176Lu in the scintillator for its convenience and uniformity. The performance indices of a detector module include the individual crystal energy resolution and relative crystal light collection efficiency. They are indispensable in detector and system development. As no prominent photoelectric-peak exists in the 176Lu energy spectrum, it is not straight forward to obtain the detector performance indices from the acquired data. We developed a method to derive the crystal energy resolution and the relative crystal light collection efficiency by fitting the experiment crystal energy spectrum with simulated crystal energy spectrum. The detector module of this study consisted of a 6 by 6 L YSO scintillator array coupled to 4 PMTs. A 2-minute and a 30-minute two dimensional position map (2Dmap) were acquired for evaluating data with short and long scans. With the short acquisition data, we can generally evaluate the performance of the detector. With the long acquisition data, we segmented the 2Dmap and obtained the crystal energy resolutions to be 25% to 45% and the relative crystal light collection efficiency to be 0.43 to 1. We concluded that the 176Lu background radiation could be used to evaluate LYSO and its variant based PET detector module.

Abstract:The Engineering Materials Diffractometer (EMD) is a new and critical addition to the instrument suite of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). It will support extensive research activities and applications on modern engineering materials. Based on the large multielement detector array, the electronic time focusing method has been successfully applied to deal with the raw neutron data and the constants C i , corresponding to each single pixel in the detector array, have been calculated using the relation between the time of flight of the Bragg peaks in standard Si sample and their particular d -spacings. The instrument resolution in the mode best suited for strain measurements (∼0.35%) is interpreted and verified as a function of d -spacing via Si and La 11 B 6 standard samples. The results are found to be consistent with the McStas simulations of the instrument physical design.

Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy has been developed for topographic analysis at the nanometer scale. Herein, we present a silicon p-n diode with multi-annular configuration to detect backscattering electrons (BSE) in a homemade desktop scanning electron microscope (SEM). The multi-annular configuration enables the enhancement of the topography contrast of 82.11 nA/μm as compared with the commercial multi-fan-shaped BSE detector of 40.08 nA/μm. Additionally, we integrated it with lateral p-n junction processing and aluminum grid structure to increase the sensitivity and efficiency of the multi-annular BSE detector that gives higher sensitivity of atomic number contrast and better surface topography contrast of BSE images for low-energy detection. The responsivity data also shows that MA-AL and MA p-n detectors have higher gain value than the MA detector does. The standard deviation of measurements is no higher than 1%. These results verify that MA p-n and MA-AL detectors are stable and can function well in SEM for low-energy applications. It is demonstrated that the multi-annular (MA) detectors are well suited for imaging in SEM systems.
Low Radon Concentration Measurement with a Radon-Dissolved Liquid Scintillator Pilot Detector

Abstract:We construct a high sensitivity radon pilot detector using liquid scintillator dissolved radon for the CDEX rare-event searches program. The CDEX-10 project employs a germanium detector array immersed in a massive liquid nitrogen tank. However, radon emanated from the surface of the tank can contribute background. As a result, radon contamination in the liquid nitrogen tank must be regulated and monitored, which necessitates the use of a low-level Rn measuring device. The radon-dissolved liquid scintillator (LS) detectors utilizes cascade decay selections, yielding a unique signature. All background events occurring in the LS, with regard to the system and co-efficiency of Rn absorption, have been studied. Background activity is measured to be 59.8$\pm$18.4 $\mu$Bq per 300 mL LS. Meanwhile, it shows that radon concentration absorbed by LS will be saturated and is linearly related to radon concentration in nitrogen gas. Furthermore, the co-efficiency factor can be optimized by lowering temperature or raising pressure. Eventually the detection limit for 222^Rn in nitrogen gas is observed to be 9.6 mBq/m^3.

Abstract:Liquid scintillation technique was developed from the early fifties as an effective way to measure the low energy radiation. It can detect more than half of the periodic table of elements. And it is widely used in industry, agriculture, biology, chemistry, medicine, geology, hydrology, archeology, environmental protection and other fields. When measuring on low energy β-ray and low penetration α-ray with liquid scintillation analyzer, the number of its excitation photons is small. So, demand on the measuring instruments is very high. This paper analyzes the source of the liquid scintillation background counting, and it focuses on how to reduce background based on improving the sensitivity from the angle of the circuit design.

Abstract:Soil radon measurement is crucial for environmental safety, public health, and earth science research. Despite significant advancements in the development of radon measurement instruments and methods, there is still a lack of instruments for continuous soil radon monitoring. Therefore, we have developed a continuous radon measurement instrument and designed a corresponding field installation method. This instrument uses a gold-silicon surface barrier semiconductor electrostatic method to measure radon exhalation concentration from the soil and achieves automatic sampling via natural air diffusion. It operates on solar power, is easy to install, and supports both wireless and wired communication. Multiple instruments have been continuously tested in the field for more than a year, showing consistent data among adjacent instruments and the ability to reveal the fluctuation patterns of soil radon. However, practical applications have encountered some challenges, such as data noise and the impact of condensate water on the detector surface.

Abstract:We present the development of a gamma ray and neutron detector for possible use in terrestrial and planetary science. The detector is based on a monolithic scintillator coupled to an array of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) read out by compact integrated electronics, and it shall allow one to detect gamma-rays and neutrons with energies from 0.025 eV to 1 MeV with energy resolution of < 4% full-width half-maximum (FWHM) at 662 keV (Cs-137). Among the various scintillators studied, we measured the energy resolution of 4.87% FWHM at 662 keV with a monolithic and cylindrical CLLBC and confirmed acceptable sensitivity to thermal neutrons at 3.1 MeV. The results are promising towards our goal to measure the abundance of hydrogen bearing compounds and rock-forming elements for planetary geology research.

Abstract:To protect the priceless lives of the personnel, a personal dosimeter that can track exposure levels in real time is essential. A specific technology to measure ionizing radiation should exist in order to know the dose absorbed by any living thing. Gamma radiation was discovered using the Scintillation-Based Personal Dosimeter. When subjected to ionizing radiation, the scintillator (CsI(Tl) - Cesium Iodide doped with Thallium) emits visible light. Using a SiPM detector, visible photons are transformed into an electrical signal. Using electronics, the electrical signals obtained are converted to digital pulses which is passed to the microcontroller to process the data. The fundamental principle utilized to detect ionizing radiation is scintillation crystal's light emission is directly proportional to the energy of ionizing radiation.

Abstract:In a nuclear emergency, the application of in situ spectrometers for monitoring environmental radioactivity is significantly important, as information on the type and activity of radionuclides released from the accident can be obtained quickly. However, in emergency environmental radiological monitoring, a balance between energy resolution and detecting efficiency must be considered in selecting an appropriate detector. In this study, in situ gamma spectrometry was conducted with the LaBr3 detector to determine the radioactivity of seawater at the discharging outlet of a coastal nuclear power plant in southeast China. The results show that the LaBr3 scintillator has excellent energy resolution and detection efficiency, making it a promising detector for emergency monitoring.

Abstract:Measurement of tritium surface contamination is important for tritium related facilities, especially for fusion devices. A novel detector has been designed for tritium surface contamination measurements based on CaF 2 (Eu) sheet and Microchannel plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT). Self-coincidence technology has been introduced to obtain lower detection limit by diminishing the background noise caused by γ-rays and hot electrons. Performance of the detector was optimized by specifying the key parameters including the distance of the scintillator and sample, the thickness of light guide, the number of annular electrodes et al., using Monte Carlo method. Results indicate that detection efficiency of 49.4 % and the response deviations at different positions less than 0.5 % could be achieved. The detection limit of tritium under the simulation conditions is 0.09 Bq/cm 2 and 0.03 Bq/cm 2 when the counting time is 10 s and 60 s, respectively.

Abstract:In order to accurately acquire soil total nitrogen (STN) content and soil moisture (SM) content, an in-situ STN-SM content detector was developed, and the stability and accuracy of the detector were tested. The in-situ detector consisted of an optical unit, a control unit and a mechanical unit. The optical unit comprised eight single band Near-infrared (NIR) laser sources at 1260, 1330, 1360, 1430, 1530, 1580, 1660 and 1450 nm, collimator and an InGaAs photoelectric sensor, a laser source holder with “Eight faces” umbrella structure and sapphire glass. The control unit was composed of hardware part and software part. The hardware part included I-U conversion circuit, amplifier and filter circuit, and JN5139 module responsible for A/D conversion and data transmission. The software part of the program was written in the JN5139 microcontroller unit. The mechanical unit comprised a cylindrical detection darkroom, an electrical component mounting tray and a cylindrical shading and dust cover. The stability test results showed that the repeatability error at eight sensitive bands were 0.7758%, 0.8091%, 0.7958%, 0.5189%, 0.6405%, 0.8556%, 0.7391% and 0.5294%, respectively. The correlation coefficients between the absorbance of in-situ detector and MATRIX-I Fourier transform near-infrared spectrophotometer were all above 0.88. A portable LED STN content detector was taken as the reference in the performance test. The results showed that the calibration coefficient R c 2 and the validation coefficient R v 2 of in-situ detector model were 0.8322 and 0.7832, respectively. While those of the portable LED STN content detector model were 0.7205 and 0.6851, respectively. Two regression models were established for the SM content by respectively using the portable LED STN content detector and the in-situ detector, and the results showed that both detectors had good detection effects in SM. The experimental results showed that compared with the portable LED STN content detector, in-situ detector greatly improved the STN content detection precision, and could realize STN and SM content field detection in real-time.

Abstract:Position sensitive detectors based on gaseous scintillation proportional counters with Anger-type readout are being used in several research areas such as neutron detection, search for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay. Design and optimization of such detectors are complex and time consuming tasks. Simulations, while being a powerful tool, strongly depend on the light transport models and demand accurate knowledge of many parameters, which are often not available. Here we describe an alternative approach based on the experimental evaluation of a detector using an isotropic point-like light source with precisely controllable light emission properties, installed on a 3D positioning system. The results obtained with the developed setup at validation conditions, when the scattered light is strongly suppressed, show good agreement with simulations.

Abstract:Low-frequency electromagnetic induction (EMI) is a non-invasive geophysical method that is based on the induction of electromagnetic (EM) waves into the subsurface to quantify changes in electrical conductivity. In this study, we present an open (design details and software are accessible) and modular system for the collection of EMI data. The instrument proposed allows for the separations between the transmitter to be adjusted and up to four receiving antennas as well as the acquisition frequency (in the range between 3 and 50 kHz) to permit measurements with variable depth of investigation. The sensor provides access to raw data and the software described in this study allows control of the signal processing chain. The design specifications permit apparent conductivity measurements in the range of between 1 mS/m and 1000 mS/m, with a resolution of 1.0 mS/m and with a sampling rate of up to 10 samples per second. The sensor allows for a synchronous acquisition of a time stamp and a location stamp for each data sample. The sensor has a mass of less than 5 kg, is portable and suitable for one-person operation, provides 4 h of operation time on one battery charge, and provides sufficient rigidity for practical field operations.

Abstract:The development of real-time dosimetry depends on the progress of nuclear radiation detector and measurement principle. The development of a tissue-equivalent, portable, and low-power detector is imperative. A novel nuclear radiation detector based on lithium fluoride (LiF):Mg,Ti coupled with a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) has been developed for real-time dosimetry using count acquisition in this study, taking the inherent virtue of LiF:Mg,Ti and SiPM into account. First, the Monte Carlo simulation was adopted for detector design using Super-MC, and then the performance of the detector was tested experimentally. The simulation and experimental results show good agreement. The detector has good optical quality, and the experimental reproducibility (0.25%) and the linear dose-rate responses of the two (respectively, assembled by mm and mm LiF:Mg,Ti crystals) range from 0.2 mGy/h to 1.07 Gy/h, which is the sign that it can partly complement the shortcomings of common scintillation detectors in the field of high-dose-rate measurement. Moreover, it can be anticipated that the novel dosimeter would have a flexible dose-rate range by adjusting the crystal size for different measurement demands, especially for high dosimetry at room temperature.

Abstract:In recent years, the issue of radon emanation and diffusion has become a critical concern for rare decay experiments, such as JUNO and PandaX-4T. This paper introduces a detector design featuring a symmetric radon detector cavity for the quantitative assessment of membrane materials' radon blocking capabilities. The performance of this design is evaluated through the application of Fick's Law and the diffusion equation considering material solubility. Our detector has completed measurements of radon diffusion coefficients for four types of membrane materials currently used in experiments, which also confirms the rationality of this detector design. The findings are instrumental in guiding the selection and evaluation of optimal materials for radon shielding to reduce radon background, contributing to boost sensitivities of rare event research.

Abstract:Scintillation detector has lower energy resolution for Gamma-ray as compared to semiconductor detector, better spectra analysis method is essential to traditional method. A model for describing the response function of scintillation detector over the range of incident Gamma-ray energies between 0.5 and 1.5 MeV has been established and applied to fitting radiation sources spectra. Each function form for describing the feature of Gamma-ray spectra are based on the analysis of fundamental interaction mechanism. These functions are combined to form a DRF model to fit experiment spectra by weighted least squares fitting method, parameters in this model are obtained simultaneously. Gaussian standard deviation can be calculated out by an individual procedure. Validity of the DRF model is demonstrated by fitting Co-60 and Cs-137 spectra measured by CsI(Tl) detector and comparing them to the normalized equivalent measured spectrum.

Abstract:Research on the in-situ environment in deep sea is a new focus in marine science. In this work, a prototype in-situ gamma-ray spectrometer was designed in order to measure the gamma-ray spectrum of the environment at about 5000 meters underwater in the South China Sea. The new spectrometer consists of an NaI(Tl) crystal, a photomultiplier tube (PMT), and its electronics. The full digital processing method is implemented in the electronics system, including waveform digitization and digital filtering, to build a general readout platform for various scintillator material based gamma-ray detection. The prototype electronics system is comprised of three modules, which are responsible for analog signal conditioning and high-speed high-resolution waveform digitization, as well as digital filtering, data buffering and transferring based on the field programmable gate array (FPGA). Tests were also conducted to evaluate the system performance. The results indicate that this gamma-ray spectrometer prototype achieves energy range from 60 keV to 3 MeV and full width at half maxima (FWHM) resolutions of 7.5% at 662 keV and 8.8% at 511 keV, which are above the application requirement.

Design of Solid-State Detector Modules for High Energy X-ray Imaging

Abstract:Various problems can arise when standard detectors are used in high energy X-ray imaging systems. Several linear CdWO_4 arrays coupled to photodiode arrays were designed using Monte- Carlo simulations. The designs were tested using an electron linear accelerator producing pulsed X-rays with a maximum energy of 9 MeV as the X-ray source. The detectors were assembled in modular form, with 16 channels in each module, crystal size of 0.8 mm×5 mm×30 mm and pitch size of 1.3 mm. Lead spacers were placed between crystals to reduce the cross-talk. The results are that the detection efficiency reaches 70%, energy deposition rate is 30%, while cross-talk is reduced to 5%. The modules were fabricated and tested under the radiation sources of ~60Co, 6 MeV LINAC and 9 MeV LINAC. The conclusion is that the linear CdWO_4 arrays can satisfy the meet of the NDT system.
