Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Direct Z-scheme photocatalysts have attracted extensive attention due to their strong redox ability and efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In this study, we constructed two types of ZnS/SnS2 heterojunctions with different stacking models of ZnS and SnS2 layers, and investigated their structures, stabilities, and electronic and optical properties. Both types of heterojunctions are stable and are direct Z-scheme photocatalysts with band gaps of 1.87 eV and 1.79 eV, respectively. Furthermore, their oxidation and reduction potentials straddle the redox potentials of water, which makes them suitable as photocatalysts for water splitting. The built-in electric field at the heterojunction interface improves the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thus enhancing their photocatalytic efficiency. In addition, ZnS/SnS2 heterojunctions have higher carrier mobilities and light absorption intensities than ZnS and SnS2 monolayers. Therefore, the ZnS/SnS2 heterojunction has a broad application prospect as a direct Z-scheme visible-light-driven photocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The electronic structures of two dimensional (2D) CdS/ZnO heterostructure (CdZnHT) consisting of CdS singlelayer (SL) and ZnO SL are explored based on hybrid density functional calculation. The negative interface formation energies suggest the formation of CdZnHT is exothermic. The bandgap of CdZnHT is favorable for absorbing visible light, and the decent band edge position makes it thermodynamically feasible for spontaneous generation of oxygen and hydrogen. The formed electric field across the interface induced by charge transfer will reduce photogenerated carrier recombination and promote carrier migration. Particularly, CdZnHT is a type-II heterostructure. Oxygen generation takes place at ZnO layer and hydrogen production occurs at CdS layer, which will also promote the effective separation and migration of phogogenerated carriers and enhance photocatalytic performance. These findings suggest that 2D CdZnHTs are possible candidates as water-splitting photocatalysts.
Direct Z-scheme Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting on 2D CdS/InSe Heterostructures

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we investigated the photocatalytic mechanism of two dimensional van der Waals CdS/InSe heterostructures (HSs). Our results show that the buckling distortion of a CdS monolayer sheet in the CdS/InSe HSs induces a built-in polarized electric field, which significantly changes the band edge positions of the InSe layer. The band alignment indicated that the photogenerated electrons in the conduction band (CB) of the InSe monolayer have a high possibility of recombining with the holes in the valence band (VB) of the CdS sheet, resulting in the electrons in the CB of CdS participating in a reduction reaction and the holes in the VB of InSe taking part in an oxidation reaction. This direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system can lead to spatial separation of photogenerated carriers and excellent rcdox ability, thus enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency. Meanwhile, CdS/InSe HSs can significantly extend the range of light harvesting from visible light to infrared light. Similar results can also be found in the CdS/InSe@2 HSs constructed by InSe bilayer deposit on a CdS nanosheet. These results indicate that CdS/InSe HSs are promising photocatalysts for water splitting.
An in-plane S-scheme heterostructure drives H2 production with water and solar energy

Abstract:Construction of S-scheme photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production has been regarded as a promising route to effectively utilize solar energy. However, the limited contact area blocks extensive migration of charge carrier and restrains the further development of these photocatalysts. Herein, a novelty SnO2/CdS 2D in-plane heterojunction is designed and fabricated, in which interfacial lattice match occurs in the nanosheets providing a reasonable condition for close combination between SnO2 and CdS. Specially, experimental results and corresponding density functional theory simulation jointly identify the charge redistribution and formation internal electric field between two branches, which is the intrinsic cause for promoting charge carrier migrating following S-scheme mechanism. Eventually, contributed by the appropriate surface hydrogen adsorption free energy and enhanced reduction abilities of the electrons, the photocatalytic H2 production of optimized SnO2/CdS nanosheets is about 10 and 5 times higher than that of SnO2 and CdS. The excellent performance of SnO2/CdS and novel designed synthetic method provide opportunities to develop advanced photocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:The design of two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures (HSs) is an effective method to tune the physical and chemical properties of 2D materials. Using first-principles calculations, we explore the photocatalytic activity of CdS/PtSSe HSs (CPHSs) including CdS/SPtSe HSs (CPHS(S)s) and CdS/SePtS HSs (CPHS(Se)s). The small lattice mismatches and the negative interface formation energies suggest that the CPHSs are feasible, and the small bandgaps guarantee the CPHSs to absorb sufficient visible light. The stacking configurations can hardly affect the electronic structures of CPHS(S)s and CPHS(Se)s, but the contact sides can switch CPHSs between type-I and type-II. The type-I CPHS(Se)s are potential candidates as light-emitting diodes. For the CPHS(S)s, the type-II band alignments promote the spatial separation of photogenerated carriers, and the induced built-in electric fields around the interface region also promote the separation of photoinduced carriers. In addition, the band edges of CPHS(S)s fulfill the thermodynamic requirements for photocatalytic water-splitting, and the solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies are up to 37.5%. All these factors prove the CPHS(S)s are highly efficient photocatalysts to split water.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting driven by photon excitation is a promising method for generating clean energy. This study focuses on designing a two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction photocatalyst, created by vertically stacking SnS2 and ZrSi2N4. The intrinsic mechanisms and hydrogen evolution potential of this system were systematically investigated using first-principles calculations. The results demonstrate that the SnS2/ ZrSi2N4 heterojunction is a type II heterojunction with an indirect band gap, and the staggered energy bands effectively separate the photogenerated carriers and enhance photocatalytic efficiency. Additionally, the near- ideal band gap of 2.30 eV ensures good light absorption while providing sufficient driving force for water decomposition. The band-edge positions of the heterojunction span the redox potential of water, which means that, in aqueous solutions with a pH range of 0-4, the external potential generated by photogenerated electrons is adequate to spontaneously drive hydrogen evolution through water splitting. Simultaneously, the Gibbs free energy (Delta G =-0.11 eV) being close to zero indicates that this heterojunction can effectively facilitate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, the exceptional electron mobility (2048.38 cm2 & sdot;V- 1 & sdot; S- 1 ), hole mobility (4299.49 cm2 & sdot;V- 1 & sdot; S- 1 ), and solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of up to 17.92 % underscore its immense potential as an effective photocatalyst. This work offers innovative approaches for achieving efficient photocatalytic water decomposition, advancing the development of clean energy solutions.

Abstract:The construction of van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions (HJs) offers an important means to enhance the properties and expand the applications of two-dimensional (2D) materials. The CdS/SnSSe HJs, comprising CdS/SSnSe and CdS/SeSnS HJs, have been designed and investigated as potential water-splitting photocatalysts using hybrid density functional theory. The suitable interface formation energies and interlayer distances confirm that both CdS/SSnSe and CdS/SeSnS HJs are vdW HJs. The small bandgaps allow CdS/SSnSe and CdS/SeSnS HJs to absorb adequate solar light. Based on the analysis of work functions, charge transfer, and band edge positions, the direct Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism for CdS/SSnSe and CdS/SeSnS HJs is validated. This mechanism is beneficial for achieving spatial separation of photoexcited carriers and maintaining sufficient redox reaction driving potentials. All these results demonstrate that both CdS/SSnSe and CdS/SeSnS HJs are promising candidates as water-splitting photocatalysts.

Abstract:The direct Z-scheme system constructed by two-dimensional (2D) materials is an efficient route for hydrogen production from photocatalytic water splitting. In the present work, the 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions of MoSe2/SnS2, MoSe2/SnSe2, MoSe2/CrS2, MoTe2/SnS2, MoTe2/SnSe2, and MoTe2/CrS2 are proposed to be promising candidates for direct Z-scheme photocatalysts and verified by first principles calculations. Perpendicular electric field is induced in these 2D vdW heterojunctions, which enhances the efficiency of solar energy utilization. Replacing MoSe2 with MoTe2 not only facilitates the interlayer carrier migration, but also improves the optical absorption properties for these heterojunctions. Excitingly, the 2D vdW MoTe2/CrS2 heterojunction is demonstrated, for the first time, to be 2D near-infrared-light driven photocatalyst for direct Z-scheme water splitting. Constructing Direct Z‐Scheme Heterostructure by Enwrapping ZnIn2S4 on CdS Hollow Cube for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Generation

Abstract:The stable composite photocatalyst integrated by ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS exhibits outstanding visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic H2 generation activity, due to that: i) the Z‐scheme charge transfer route facilitates charge separation, prolongs carrier lifetimes, and remains strong electron reduction capacity; ii) the unique cube‐in‐cube structure brings abundant active sites, improves light harvesting ability, shortens charge transfer distance. Rational design hybrid nanostructure photocatalysts with efficient charge separation and transfer, and good solar light harvesting ability have critical significance for achieving high solar‐to‐chemical conversion efficiency. Here a highly active and stable composite photocatalyst is reported by integrating ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS cube to form the cube‐in‐cube structure. Experimental results combined with density functional theory calculations confirm that the Z‐scheme ZnIn2S4/CdS heterojunction is formed, which highly boosts the charge separation and transfer under the local‐electric‐field at semiconductor/semiconductor interface, and thus prolongs their lifetimes. Moreover, such a structure affords the highly enhanced light‐harvesting property. The optimized ZnIn2S4/CdS nanohybrids exhibit superior H2 generation rate under visible‐light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) with excellent photochemical stability during 20 h continuous operation.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) Z-scheme photocatalytic systems can usually achieve high catalytic efficiencies by separating the photoinduced carriers attend water redox reaction at different positions and providing much stronger overpotentials to drive water redox reaction. However, it is filled with challenges to develop Z-scheme photocatalysts (PCs) due to the strict requirement of proper band edge alignment and built-in electric field. Based on hybrid density functional, the photocatalytic properties of CdO/PtSSe heterojunctions (HJs) including CdO/SPtSe and CdO/SePtS HJs are investigated. The analysis of electronic structures, work functions, and charge transfer suggest the proper band alignments and the existence of built-in electric field from CdO to PtSSe, confirming the Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism of CdO/SPtSe and CdO/SePtS HJs. The light absorption curves show that CdO/SPtSe and CdO/SePtS HJs could harvest sufficient solar light. Furthermore, both CdO/SPtSe and CdO/SePtS HJs can provide sufficient overpotentials to finish water redox reaction. These findings indicate that CdO/SPtSe and CdO/SePtS HJs are promising water-splitting PCs.
Two-Dimensional Arsenene/ZrS2(HfS2) Heterostructures As Direct Z-Scheme Photocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Searching for high-efficiency photocatalysts for overall water splitting is a promising strategy to solve the energy crisis and environmental problems. Among many kinds of photocatalysts, direct Z-scheme systems have attracted much attention. Here, we propose two-dimensional arsenene/ZrS2(HfS2) heterostructures as potential direct Z-scheme photocatalysts based on density functional theory simulations. Our calculations demonstrate that arsenene/ZrS2(HfS2) heterostructures have type-II band alignments with small band gaps, facilitating spatial separation of photo-generated carriers and enhancing sunlight absorption ability. Meanwhile, interlayer charge transfer induces a built-in electric field, resulting in the band edge positions bending at the interface region. Combined with the closed band edge positions and small interlayer band gaps, the direct Z-scheme charge transfer pathway is confirmed for them. Additionally, both heterostructures show energic, dynamical, and thermal stability based on the calculated results. What is more, under solar irradiation, the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction can be triggered spontaneously on different monolayers with the potential supplied by photo-generated electrons and holes based on the calculated free energy difference (Delta G). Therefore, arsenene/ZrS2 (HfS2) heterostructures may have promising potential as bifunctional photocatalysts for overall water splitting. This work provides valuable guidance for designing the direct Z-scheme photocatalysts.
Constructing an S-scheme heterojunction of 2D/2D Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CuInS2 nanosheet with vacancies for photocatalytic hydrogen generation under visible light

Abstract:Exploring efficient and stable water-splitting photocatalysts is critical for realizing conversion solar energy into hydrogen energy. Herein, a unique 2D/2D S-scheme Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CuInS2 heterojunction with sulfur vacancies was rationally designed by chemically converting inorganic–organic hybrid ZnS(en)0.5 into inorganic Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanosheets and fabricating with CuInS2 at 350 °C under an N2 atmosphere. The final Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CuInS2 photocatalyst was composed of thin nanosheets with a substantial interfacial contact area, which enhanced light absorption and allowed directional charge transfer and separation. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic H2 evolution activities of Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanosheets is 0.79 mmol·g−1·h−1, which is greater than other solid solution materials obtained by varying Cd and Zn ratios. The 2D/2D nanosheets with 8% CuInS2 exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution activity with yields of 7.73 mmol·g−1·h−1, which are 9.8 and 138 times higher than Cd0.5Zn0.5S and CuInS2. In addition, Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CuInS2 photocatalyst demonstrates outstanding stability and activity over the course of 24-hour period. Moreover, the transfer pathway of photogenerated charges were explored by the energy band bending, which proved that an S-scheme heterojunction is synthesized successfully.This work offers a useful methodology for analyzing S-scheme heterojunction with abundant sulfur vacancies, and improving the solar hydrogen evolution performance of Cd0.5Zn0.5S photocatalyst.

Abstract:Using two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure as photocatalyst for water splitting is a popular strategy for the generation of hydrogen. In this investigation, the first-principles calculations are explored to address the electronic performances of the 2D CdO/HfS2 heterostructure formed by van der Waals (vdW) forces. The CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure has a 1.19 eV indirect bandgap with type-II band alignment. Importantly, the CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure possesses an intrinsic Z-scheme photocatalytic characteristic for water splitting by obtaining decent band edge positions. CdO donates 0.017 electrons to the HfS2 layer in the heterostructure, inducing a potential drop to further separate the photogenerated electrons and holes across the interface. The CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure also has excellent optical absorption capacity, showing a promising role as a photocatalyst to decompose the water.
Carbon dots as solid-state electron mediator and electron acceptor in S-scheme heterojunction for boosted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Nowadays, it is still an attracting work to photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen production using solar energy owing to its ecological and sustainable development significance. Herein, a ternary ZnIn2S4/carbon dots/g-C3N4 (ZIS/CDs/CN) S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with solid-state electron mediator and electron acceptor dual roles of CDs (∼5 nm) as a co-catalyst are designed via a calcination method follow-up water bath process for boosted photocatalytic H2 evolution. Compared to individual ZIS and pure CN, the photocatalytic efficiency of H2 evolution over ZIS/CDs/CN is enhanced by about 2 and 10 times, respectively. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the heterojunction type between ZIS and CN is determined to be S-scheme heterojunction. In order to corroborate the role of CDs in S-scheme heterojunction, ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 (ZIS/CN) was synthesized for comparative experiments and characterization, and its promotion of S-scheme heterojunction was confirmed. Furthermore, ZIS/CDs/CN S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst still express excellent practicality in seawater environment and structural stability after four successive cycling reactions for photocatalytic H2 evolution. In addition, this bi-functional CDs is also applicable to S-scheme heterojunction constructed from other two different semiconductors, which enrich the construction method of later S-scheme heterojunctions and advance the development of S-scheme heterojunctions.

Abstract:A research hotspot in the clean-energy field has been the two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure (HTS)-boosted mechanisms for photocatalytic water splitting. In this work, a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst based on holey 2D C2N (h2D-C2N) and C3B composites is put forward. Through density functional theory (DFT), the band structures, partial charge density, and optical properties of h2D-C2N/C3B HTSs are explored. The band-edge locations can be effectively adjusted by strain. During the process of photocatalytic water splitting, the charge-transfer path of electrons is determined. The conduction band (CB) of h2D-C2N and the valence band (VB) of C3B maintain their respective oxidation and reduction capabilities. The composite electrons are provided by the CB of C3B, while the composite holes are provided by the VB of h2D-C2N. Based on this, h2D-C2N/C3B HTSs are determined as Z-scheme photocatalysts. Meanwhile, A-B and A-C HTSs, under specific strain, which have close to the ideal potential requirements for the HER and the OER, are predicted. Our findings suggest that h2D-C2N/C3B HTSs are promising candidates for future optoelectronic and nanoelectronic applications, which also provide a precious reference for future experimental investigations.

Abstract:The development and design of efficient photoelectric catalysts is of great significance for environmental friendliness. This paper is devoted to finding a new two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction to realize hydrogen production from water splitting. Based on first-principles calculations, a direct type-Z C3N/WS2 heterojunction was successfully designed by combining highly active two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with C3N similar in structure to graphene. The staggered band structure of the direct Z-scheme and high carrier mobility facilitates the efficient separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. More importantly, the C3N/WS2 direct Z-type heterojunction can perfectly realize total water splitting from pH = 0 to pH = 7. What's more, the Gibbs free energy and overpotential demonstrate the excellent hydrogen evolution capability and the oxygen evolution capacity of the material. In , these studies provide new ideas for designing high-performance photoelectric catalysts for visible-light water splitting.

Abstract:Ultrathin CdS nanosheets (NSs) are intriguing in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Severe photo-corrosion and rapid recombination of electrons and holes, however, impair their applications. To solve this problem, a novel step-scheme (S-scheme) 2D CdS/W18O49 heterostructure with strong interfacial interactions and large contact interface has been successfully designed. Due to the ultrathin structure of CdS, defect-rich W18O49 NSs-assembled network, unique 2D heterostructure and state-of-the-art S-scheme mode, 40 wt% CdS/W18O49 (CW40) shows a prominent photocatalytic H2 production rate of 15.4 mmol g−1 h−1. Besides, the apparent quantum efficiency of CW40 is up to 15.4 % under light at λ = 370 nm. Besides, the as-prepared CW40 can protect CdS from photo-corrosion, exhibiting outstanding stability over 24 h circular reaction. Our work provides an out-of-box solution to broaden the application potential of certain catalysts with inherent drawbacks and offers fresh insight into the design and preparation of highly-efficient 2D heterostructures for versatile applications.

Direct Z-scheme ZnS/HfS2 Heterojunction for Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting with High Carrier Mobility

Abstract:The electronic and photocatalytic properties of a type-II ZnS/HfS2 heterojunction are comprehensively analyzed through first-principles calculations in this paper. By calculating the binding energy and phonon spectrum of five potential stacking patterns, the stable structure of the ZnS/HfS2 heterojunction is determined. The electronic structure calculations indicate that the heterojunction has a type-II alignment with a 1.26 eV band gap. The heterojunction exhibits high carrier mobilities (4387.36 and 9561.39 cm2V-1S- 1 for X and Y directions). The photocatalytic water splitting process of the heterojunction can be explained by the direct Z-scheme mechanism. The built-in electric field enables rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs at CBM and VBM, while the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction can separately be achieved at the ZnS layer and HfS2 layer to complete the overall water splitting. The free energy analysis indicates that the ZnS/HfS2 heterojunction has high activity for overall water splitting under illumination. Moreover, the calculated solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of the heterojunction reaches 30%, ensuring its photocatalytic performance. Remarkably, the type-II alignment is maintained and the catalytic performance can be further improved under biaxial strain because of the enhanced optical absorption in visible light and the reduced band gap. This work reveals that ZnS/HfS2 heterojunction is a potentially novel photocatalytic material for efficient overall water splitting.

Abstract:Fabricating neoteric photocatalysts with high-efficiency charge separation for solar-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a challenge. Constructing strongly coupled two-dimensional (2D)-2D heterostructures is available to the charge spatial migration due to the regulation of the interlayer forces and electronic structures. In this work, we demonstrate novel 2D-2D SnS2/CdS heterostructures by loading SnS2 nanosheets (SnS2 NSs) onto CdS nanosheets (CdS NSs). The SnS2/CdS heterostructures possess a close face-to-face contact and strongly coupled interaction to improve the charge trasnfer kinetics, and the loading of SnS2 can enhance light absorption and suppress photocorrosion of CdS. The optimized S-Scheme SnS2/CdS heterostructures exhibit excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity in lactic acid sacrificial solution under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm), affording a highest hydrogen evolution rate on SnS2/CdS heterostructures with 35 wt% SnS2 (5.18 mmol g-1 h-1), which is approximately 6 folds higher than that of pure CdS NSs (0.87 mmol g-1 h-1). In addition, a highest apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 59.3% can be obtained at 420 nm. When methanol was used as the sacrificial agent, the hydrogen production rate can reach up to 3.27 mmol g-1 h-1, and the methanol is oxidatively reformed into methoxymethanol (CH3OCH2OH). This work provides a feasible method for designing strongly coupled 2D-2D heterostructure photocatalysts for energy storage and conversion applications.
