Abstract:In the context of holomorphic forms on tube domains, singular automorphic forms were studied by Maass [Maa], Freitag [Fre], and Resnikoff [Res], among others. A holomorphic form is singular if it is annihilated by certain differential operator(s). It is known that this is the case if and only if all its “nondegenerate” Fourier coefficients vanish, and if and only if it has one of the “singular weights”. The equivalence of these properties are far from trivial, and they constitute some of the basic results in the theory.

Abstract:The main theme of this paper is that singular automorphic forms on classical groups are given by theta series liftings. We establish several inequalities relating the automorphic multiplicities of a given representation and that of its abstract theta lift. Our methods allow one to lift noncuspidal, square integrable automorphic forms when the dual pair involved is in the stable range. In this way we construct new families of singular automorphic forms, many of which are clearly unipotent. In fact, starting from one-dimensional representations and repeating the procedure (of lifting in the stable range), one may obtain all automorphic forms which are quadratic unipotent in the sense of Moeglin.

Abstract:We study the holomorphic projection of mixed mock modular forms involving sesquiharmonic Maass forms. As a special case, we numerically express the holomorphic projection of a function involving real quadratic class numbers multiplied by a certain theta function in terms of eta quotients. We also analyze certain shifted convolution $L$-series involving mock modular forms and bound certain shifted convolution sums.

Abstract:Holomorphic representations are lowest weight representations for simple Lie groups of Hermitian type and have been studied extensively. Inspired by the work of Kobayashi on discrete series for indefinite Stiefel manifolds, Gross-Wallach on quaternonic discrete series and their analytic continuation, and Orsted-Wolf on Borel-de Siebenthal discrete series, we define and study Borel-de Siebenthal representations (also called quasi-holomorphic representations) associated with Borel-de Siebenthal root systems for simple Lie groups of non-Hermitian type.

Abstract:Holomorphic almost modular forms are holomorphic functions of the complex upper half plane that can be approximated arbitrarily well (in a suitable sense) by modular forms of congruence subgroups of large index in SL(2,Z). It is proved that such functions have a rotation‐invariant limit distribution when the argument approaches the real axis. An example of a holomorphic almost modular form is the logarithm of ∏n=1∞(1−exp(2π i n2z)). The paper is motivated by the author's previous studies [Int. Math. Res. On Converse Theorems for Hilbert Modular Forms Assuming Unramified Twists

Abstract:We prove two results on converse theorems for Hilbert modular forms over totally real fields of degree $r>1$. The first result recovers a Hilbert modular form (of some level) from an $L$-series satisfying functional equations twisted by all the unramified Hecke characters. The second result assumes both the 'unramified' functional equations and an Euler product, and recovers a Hilbert modular form of the expected level predicted by the shape of the functional equations. Our result generalizes the current converse theorems for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ in the case of Hilbert modular forms in that we completely remove the assumptions on ramified twists.

In fact, these results extend known results of starlikeness , convexity, and close to convexity.
$L$-functions of Kloosterman sheaves

Abstract:In this article, we study a family of motives $\mathrm{M}_{n+1}^k$ associated with the symmetric power of Kloosterman sheaves, as constructed by Fresán, Sabbah, and Yu. They demonstrated that for $n=1$, the motivic $L$-functions of $\mathrm{M}_{2}^k$ extend meromorphically to $\mathbb{C}$ and satisfy the functional equations conjectured by Broadhurst and Roberts. Our work aims to extend these results to the motivic $L$-functions of some of the motives $\mathrm{M}_{n+1}^k$, with $n>1$, as well as other related $2$-dimensional motives. In particular, we prove several conjectures of Evans type, which relate traces of Kloosterman sheaves and Fourier coefficients of modular forms.

Abstract:We introduce an $L$-series associated to real-analytic modular forms which transform with weight $(r,s)\in\mathbb{Z}^2$ under $\Gamma_0(N)$. These $L$-series satisfy a functional equation and converse theorem. We also discuss examples of such forms, including real analytic Eisenstein series and modular iterated integrals of higher level. We focus on the $L$-series for a class of forms including Francis Brown's length-one modular iterated integrals $\mathcal{MI}^!_1$.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we consider generalized Möbius functions associated with two types of L-functions: Rankin–Selberg L-functions of symmetric powers of distinct holomorphic cusp forms and L-functions derived from Maass cusp forms. We show that these generalized Möbius functions are weakly orthogonal to bounded sequences. As a direct corollary, a generalized Sarnak’s conjecture holds for these two types of Möbius functions.

Abstract:Let $f$ and $g$ be spectrally normalized holomorphic newforms of even weight $k \geq2$ on $\Gamma_0(q)$. If $f\neq g$, then assume that $q$ is squarefree. For a nice test function $\psi$ supported on $\Gamma_0(1)\backslash\mathbb{H}$, we establish the best known bounds (uniform in $k$, $q$, and $\psi$) for \[ \int_{\Gamma_0(q)\backslash\mathbb{H}}\psi(z)f(z)\overline{g(z)}y^{k}\frac{dxdy}{y^2}-\mathbf{1}_{f = g}\frac{3}{\pi}\int_{\Gamma_0(1)\backslash\mathbb{H}}\psi(z)\frac{dx dy}{y^2}.\] When $f=g$, our results yield an effective holomorphic variant of quantum unique ergodicity, refining work of Holowinsky-Soundararajan and Nelson-Pitale-Saha. When $f \neq g$, our results extend and improve the effective decorrelation result of Huang for $q=1$. To prove our results, we refine Soundararajan's weak subconvexity bound for Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions.

Abstract:We work out the exact relationship between algebraic modular forms for a two-by-two general unitary group over a definite quaternion algebra, and those arising from genera of positive-definite quinary lattices, relating stabilisers of local lattices with specific open compact subgroups, paramodular at split places, and with Atkin-Lehner operators. Combining this with the recent work of Rösner and Weissauer, proving conjectures of Ibukiyama on Jacquet-Langlands type correspondences (mildly generalised here), provides an effective tool for computing Hecke eigenvalues for Siegel modular forms of degree two and paramodular level. It also enables us to prove examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues connecting Siegel modular forms of degrees two and one. These include some of a type conjectured by Harder at level one, supported by computations of Fretwell at higher levels, and a subtly different congruence discovered experimentally by Buzzard and Golyshev.

Formal deformations of modular forms and multiple L-values

Abstract:We relate analytically defined deformations of modular curves and modular forms from the literature to motivic periods via cohomological descriptions of deformation theory. Leveraging cohomological vanishing results, we prove the existence and essential uniqueness of deformations, which we make constructive via established Lie algebraic arguments and a notion of formal logarithmic deformations. Further, we construct a canonical and a totally holomorphic canonical universal family of deformations of modular forms of all weights, which we obtain from the canonical cocycle associated with periods on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}$. Our uniqueness statement shows that non-critical multiple $\mathrm{L}$-values, which appear in our deformations but are a priori non-geometric, are genuinely linked to deformations. Our work thus suggests a new geometric perspective on them.

Abstract:We extend the axiomatization for detecting and quantifying sign changes of Meher and Murty to sequences of complex numbers. We further generalize this result when the sequence is comprised of the coefficients of an $L$-function. As immediate applications, we prove that there are sign changes in intervals within sequences of coefficients of GL(2) holomorphic cusp forms, GL(2) Maass forms, and GL(3) Maass forms. Building on previous works by the authors, we prove that there are sign changes in intervals within sequences of partial sums of coefficients of GL(2) holomorphic cusp forms and Maass forms.

Abstract:We prove two principal results. Firstly, we characterise Maass forms in terms of functional equations for Dirichlet series twisted by primitive characters. The key point is that the twists are allowed to be meromorphic. This weakened analytic assumption applies in the context of our second theorem, which shows that the quotient of the symmetric square L-function of a Maass newform and the Riemann zeta function has infinitely many poles.
