Abstract:We study models of itinerant spinless fermions with random long-range interactions. We motivate such models from descriptions of fermionic atoms in multi-mode optical cavities. The solution of an infinite-range model yields a metallic phase which has glassy charge dynamics, and a localized glass phase with suppressed density of states at low energies. We compare these phases to the conventional disordered Fermi liquid, and the insulating electron glass of semiconductors. Prospects for the realization of such glassy phases in cold atom systems are discussed.

Abstract:We study the Coulomb glass emerging from the interplay of strong interactions and disorder in a model of spinless fermions on the Bethe lattice. In the infinite coordination number limit, strong interactions induce a metallic Coulomb glass phase with a pseudogap structure at the Fermi energy. Quantum and thermal fluctuations both melt this glass and induce a disordered quantum liquid phase. We combine self-consistent diagrammatic perturbation theory with continuous time quantum Monte-Carlo simulations to obtain the complete phase diagram of the electron glass, and to characterize its dynamical properties in the quantum liquid, as well as in the replica symmetry broken glassy phase. Tunneling spectra display an Efros-Shklovskii pseudogap upon decreasing temperatures, but the density of states remains finite at the Fermi energy due to residual quantum fluctuations. Our results bear relevance to the metallic glass phase observed in Si inversion layers.

Abstract:The quantum Coulomb glass model describes disordered interacting electrons on the insulating side of a metal-insulator transition. By taking quantum fluctuations into account it can describe not only the localized limit but also the weakly localized regime. We discuss several possibilities to generalize the concept of Anderson localization to interacting electron systems such as the quantum Coulomb glass and define criteria for localization. The corresponding physical quantities are calculated by numerically exact diagonalization. The results indicate that single-particle excitations close to the Fermi energy become more strongly localized under the influence of interaction.

Abstract:Understanding mechanical relaxation, such as primary (α) and secondary (β) relaxation, is key to unravel the intertwined relation between the atomic dynamics and non-equilibrium thermodynamics in metallic glasses. At a fundamental level, relaxation, plastic deformation, glass transition, and crystallization of metallic glasses are intimately linked to each other, which can be related to atomic packing, inter-atomic diffusion, and cooperative atom movement. Conceptually, β relaxation is usually associated with structural heterogeneities intrinsic to metallic glasses. However, the details of such structural heterogeneities, being masked by the meta-stable disordered long-range structure, are yet to be understood. In this paper, we briefly review the recent experimental and simulation results that were attempted to elucidate structural heterogeneities in metallic glasses within the framework of β relaxation. In particular, we will discuss the correlation among β relaxation, structural heterogeneity, and mechanical properties of metallic glasses.

Abstract:Metallic glasses have aroused considerable interest in the past decades because they exhibit fascinating properties. First, this article briefly outlines the mechanical, thermal properties and application of the metallic glasses. In addition, we focus on the dynamic mechanical relaxation behaviors, i.e. main (alpha) and secondary (beta) relaxations, in metallic glasses. The mechanical relaxation behaviors are connected to the mechanical properties and physical properties in glassy materials. The main relaxation in glassy materials is related to the glass transition phenomenon and viscous flow. On the other hand, the beta relaxation is linked to many fundamental issues in metallic glasses. In these materials relaxation processes are directly related to the plastic deformation mechanism. The mechanical relaxations, particularly, the beta relaxation provides an excellent opportunity to design metallic glasses with desired physical and mechanical properties. We demonstrate the universal characteristics of main relaxation in metallic glasses. The phenomenological models and the physical theories are introduced to describe the main relaxation in metallic glasses. In parallel, we show the dependence of the alpha and beta relaxations on the thermal treatments in metallic glasses. Finally, we analyze the correlation between the atomic mobility and the thernno-mechanical treatments in metallic glasses. On the one hand, the atomic mobility in metallic glasses is reduced by physical aging or crystallization. On the other hand, the atomic mobility in metallic glass is enhanced by deformation (i.e. compression and cold rolling). Importantly, to analyze the atomic mobility in amorphous materials, a physical theory is introduced. This model invokes the concept of quasi-point defects, which correspond to the density fluctuations in the glassy materials.

Abstract:The experimental realization of correlated quantum phases with ultracold gases in optical lattices and their theoretical understanding has witnessed remarkable progress during the last decade. In this review we introduce basic concepts and tools to describe the many-body physics of quantum gases in optical lattices. This includes the derivation of effective lattice Hamiltonians from first principles and an overview of the emerging quantum phases. Additionally, state-of-the-art numerical tools to quantitatively treat bosons or fermions on different lattices are introduced.

Abstract:We study a large-$N$ bosonic quantum mechanical sigma-model with a spherical target space subject to disordered interactions, more colloquially known as the $p$-spin spherical model. Replica symmetry is broken at low temperatures and for sufficiently weak quantum fluctuations, which drives the system into a spin glass phase. The first half of this paper is dedicated to a discussion of this model's thermodynamics, with particular emphasis on the marginally stable spin glass. This phase exhibits an emergent conformal symmetry in the strong coupling regime, which dictates its thermodynamic properties. It is associated with an extensive number of nearby states in the free energy landscape. We discuss in detail an elegant approximate solution to the spin glass equations, which interpolates between the conformal regime and an ultraviolet-complete short distance solution. In the second half of this paper we explore the real-time dynamics of the model and uncover quantum chaos as measured by out-of-time-order four-point functions, both numerically and analytically. We find exponential Lyapunov growth, which intricately depends on the model's couplings and becomes strongest in the quantum critical regime. We emphasize that the spin glass phase also exhibits quantum chaos, albeit with parametrically smaller Lyapunov exponent than in the replica symmetric phase. An analytical calculation in the marginal spin glass phase suggests that this Lyapunov exponent vanishes in a particular infinite coupling limit. We comment on the potential meaning of these observations from the perspective of holography.

The Perfect Glass Paradigm: Disordered Hyperuniform Glasses Down to Absolute Zero

Abstract:Rapid cooling of liquids below a certain temperature range can result in a transition to glassy states. The traditional understanding of glasses includes their thermodynamic metastability with respect to crystals. However, here we present specific examples of interactions that eliminate the possibilities of crystalline and quasicrystalline phases, while creating mechanically stable amorphous glasses down to absolute zero temperature. We show that this can be accomplished by introducing a new ideal state of matter called a “perfect glass”. A perfect glass represents a soft-interaction analog of the maximally random jammed (MRJ) packings of hard particles. These latter states can be regarded as the epitome of a glass since they are out of equilibrium, maximally disordered, hyperuniform, mechanically rigid with infinite bulk and shear moduli, and can never crystallize due to configuration-space trapping. Our model perfect glass utilizes two-, three-, and four-body soft interactions while simultaneously retaining the salient attributes of the MRJ state. These models constitute a theoretical proof of concept for perfect glasses and broaden our fundamental understanding of glass physics. A novel feature of equilibrium systems of identical particles interacting with the perfect-glass potential at positive temperature is that they have a non-relativistic speed of sound that is infinite.

Observation of classical to quantum crossover in electron glass

Abstract:Glass, a ubiquitous state of matter like a frozen liquid, is a seminal issue across fundamental and applied sciences and has long been investigated in the framework of classical mechanics. A challenge in glass physics is the exploration of the quantum-mechanical behaviour of glass. Experimentally, however, the real quantum manifestation of glass and the relationship between classical and quantum glass are totally unknown and remain to be observed in real systems. Here, we report the direct observation of classical-to-quantum evolution in the frustration-induced charge glass state exhibited by interacting electrons in organic materials. We employ Raman spectroscopy to capture a snapshot of the charge density distribution of each molecule in a series of charge glasses formed on triangular lattices with different geometrical frustrations. In less frustrated glass, the charge density profile exhibits a particle-like two-valued distribution; however, it becomes continuous and narrowed with increasing frustration, demonstrating the classical-to-quantum crossover. Moreover, the charge density distribution shows contrasting temperature evolution in classical and quantum glasses, enabling us to delineate energy landscapes with distinct features. The present result is the first to experimentally identify the quantum charge glass and show how it emerges from classical glass.

Two-level systems and harmonic excitations in a mean-field anharmonic quantum glass

Abstract:Structural glasses display at low temperature a set of anomalies in thermodynamic observables. A prominent example is the linear-in-temperature scaling of the specific heat, at odds with the Debye cubic scaling found in crystals, due to acoustic phonons. Such an excess of specific heat in amorphous solids is thought of arising from phenomenological soft excitations dubbed tunneling two-level systems (TTLS). Their nature as well as their statistical properties remain elusive from a first-principle viewpoint. In this work we investigate the canonically quantized version of the KHGPS model, a mean-field glass model of coupled anharmonic oscillators, across its phase diagram, with an emphasis on the specific heat. The thermodynamics is solved in a semiclassical expansion. We show that in the replica-symmetric region of the model, up to the marginal glass transition line where replica symmetry gets continuously broken, a disordered version of the Debye approximation holds: the specific heat is dominated by harmonic vibrational excitations inducing a power-law scaling at the transition, ruled by random matrix theory. This mechanism generalizes a previous semiclassical argument in the literature. We then study the marginal glass phase where the semiclassical expansion becomes non-perturbative due to the emergence of instantons that overcome disordered Debye behavior. Inside the glass phase, a variational solution to the instanton approach provides the prevailing excitations as TTLS, which generate a linear specific heat. This phase thus hosts a mix of TTLS and harmonic excitations generated by interactions. We finally suggest to go beyond the variational approximation through an analogy with the spin-boson model.

Abstract:This review reports on the research done during the past years on violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) in glassy systems. It is focused on the existence of a quasi-fluctuation-dissipation theorem (QFDT) in glassy systems and the currently supporting knowledge gained from numerical simulation studies. It covers a broad range of non-stationary aging and stationary driven systems such as structural-glasses, spin-glasses, coarsening systems, ferromagnetic models at criticality, trap models, models with entropy barriers, kinetically constrained models, sheared systems and granular media. The review is divided into four main parts: 1) An introductory section explaining basic notions related to the existence of the FDT in equilibrium and its possible extension to the glassy regime (QFDT), 2) A description of the basic analytical tools and results derived in the framework of some exactly solvable models, 3) A detailed report of the current evidence in favour of the QFDT and 4) A brief digression on the experimental evidence in its favour. This review is intended for inexpert readers who want to learn about the basic notions and concepts related to the existence of the QFDT as well as for the more expert readers who may be interested in more specific results.

Abstract:We describe simulations of the quantum dynamics of a confocal cavity QED system that realizes an intrinsically driven-dissipative spin glass. A close connection between open quantum dynamics and replica symmetry breaking is established, in which individual quantum trajectories are the replicas. We observe that entanglement plays an important role in the emergence of replica symmetry breaking in a fully connected, frustrated spin network of up to 15 spin- 1/2 particles. Quantum trajectories of entangled spins reach steady-state spin configurations of lower energy than that of semiclassical trajectories. Cavity emission allows monitoring of the continuous stochastic evolution of spin configurations, while backaction from this projects entangled states into states of broken Ising and replica symmetry. The emergence of spin glass order manifests itself through the simultaneous absence of magnetization and the presence of nontrivial spin overlap density distributions among replicas. Moreover, these overlaps reveal incipient ultrametric order, in line with the Parisi replica symmetry breaking solution for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. A nonthermal Parisi order parameter distribution, however, highlights the driven-dissipative nature of this quantum optical spin glass. Abstract:Abstract This article reviews the 40+ year old spin-glass field and one of its earliest model interpretations as a spin density wave. Our description is from an experimental phenomenological point of view with emphasis on new spin glass materials and their relation to topical problems and strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. We first simply define a spin glass (SG), give its basic ingredients and explain how the spin glasses enter into the statistical mechanics of classical phase transitions. We then consider the four basic experimental properties to solidly characterize canonical spin glass behavior and introduce the early theories and models. Here the spin density wave (SDW) concept is used to explain the difference between a short-range SDW, i.e. a SG and, in contrast, a long-range SDW, i.e. a conventional magnetic phase transition. We continue with the present state of SG, its massive computer simulations and recent proposals of chiral glasses and quantum SG. We then collect and mention the various SG ‘spin-off’s'. A major section uncovers the fashionable unconventional materials that display SG-like freezing and glassy ground states, such as (high temperature) superconductors, heavy fermions, intermetallics and Heuslers, pyrochlor and spinels, oxides and chalogenides and exotics, e.g. quasicrystals. Some conclusions and future directions complete the review.

Glassiness in Uniformly Frustrated Systems

Abstract:We review several models of glassy systems where the randomness is self generated, i.e. already an infinitesimal amount of disorder is sufficient to cause a transition to a non-ergodic, glassy state. We discuss the application of the replica formalism developed for the spin glass systems to study the glass transition in uniformly frustrated many-body systems. Here a localization in configuration space emerges leading to an entropy crisis of the system. Using a combination of density functional theory and Landau theory of the glassy state, we first analyze the mean field glass transition within the saddle point approximation. We go beyond the saddle point approximation by considering the energy fluctuations around the saddle point and evaluate the barrier height distribution.

Glassy Dynamics in Geometrically Frustrated Coulomb Liquids without Disorder

Abstract:We show that introducing long-range Coulomb interactions immediately lifts the massive ground state degeneracy induced by geometric frustration for electrons on quarter-filled triangular lattices in the classical limit. Important consequences include the stabilization of a stripe-ordered crystalline (global) ground state, but also the emergence of very many low-lying metastable states with amorphous "stripe-glass" spatial structures. Melting of the stripe order thus leads to a frustrated Coulomb liquid at intermediate temperatures, showing remarkably slow (viscous) dynamics, with very long relaxation times growing in Arrhenius fashion upon cooling, as typical of strong glass formers. On shorter time scales, the system falls out of equilibrium and displays the aging phenomena characteristic of supercooled liquids above the glass transition. Our results show remarkable similarity with the recent observations of charge-glass behavior in ultraclean triangular organic materials of the θ-(BEDT-TTF)(2) family.

Quantum spherical spin-glass with random short-range interactions

Abstract:In the present paper we analyze the critical properties of a quantum spherical spin glass model with short range, random interactions. Since the model allows for rigorous detailed calculations, we can show how the effective partition function calculated with help of the replica method for the spin glass fluctuating fields separates into a mean field contribution for the replica diagonal fields and a strictly short range partition function for the replica off-diagonal fields. The mean field part coincides with previous results. The short range part describes a phase transition in a Q^3-field theory, where the fluctuating fields depend on a space variable and two independent time <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://variables.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> we analyze using the renormalization group with dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction of dimensional poles. By generalizing standard field theory methods to our particular situation, we can identify the critical dimensionality as d_c = 5 at very low temperatures due to the dimensionality shift D_c = d_c + 1. we then perform a \epsilon' expansion to order one loop to calculate the critical exponents by solving the renormalization group equations.
