Abstract:The experimental realization of correlated quantum phases with ultracold gases in optical lattices and their theoretical understanding has witnessed remarkable progress during the last decade. In this review we introduce basic concepts and tools to describe the many-body physics of quantum gases in optical lattices. This includes the derivation of effective lattice Hamiltonians from first principles and an overview of the emerging quantum phases. Additionally, state-of-the-art numerical tools to quantitatively treat bosons or fermions on different lattices are introduced.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The key problems that this paper attempts to solve are the experimental realization of correlated quantum phases in ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices and their theoretical understanding. Specifically, the article explores the following aspects: 1. **Behavior of ultracold gases in optical lattices**: By using ultracold boson and fermion gases, researchers are able to explore many - body physical phenomena under strong interactions. This includes phase transitions from the superfluid state to the Mott - insulating state, etc. 2. **Derivation of the effective lattice Hamiltonian**: Starting from first - principles, derive the effective lattice Hamiltonian that describes ultracold gases in optical lattices. This is crucial for understanding the interactions between particles and their dynamic behaviors. 3. **Research on emerging quantum phases**: Introduce and discuss novel quantum phases emerging from these systems, such as superfluid, Mott insulator, charge - density wave, topological phase, etc. 4. **Application of numerical tools**: Introduce the latest numerical tools for quantitatively treating bosons or fermions on different lattices. These tools are very critical for accurately simulating and predicting the properties of complex quantum systems. 5. **Transition from single - particle to many - body physics**: Explain how to transition from the motion of a single particle in a periodic potential field to a many - body problem considering interactions and inhomogeneous contributions. In particular, simplify the problem by introducing Wannier functions and finally derive the Bose - Hubbard model. 6. **Phase transition from superfluid to Mott insulator**: Analyze in detail the process by which the system transforms from the superfluid state to the Mott - insulating state as the interaction strength increases. This involves the application of the Gutzwiller method and other theoretical frameworks to capture the essential characteristics of this important quantum phase transition. 7. **Fermi - Hubbard model**: For fermion systems, the paper also discusses a similar tight - binding model - the Fermi - Hubbard model, especially the Mott transition and the formation mechanism of antiferromagnetic order that may occur in the half - filled case under strong repulsive interactions. In summary, this review aims to comprehensively introduce the relevant progress in the study of ultracold gases in optical lattices, covering multiple levels of content from basic concepts to advanced numerical simulations, providing a solid theoretical foundation and technical support for future research.
