Abstract:Rechargeable Fe-ion aqueous batteries (ABs) turn thriving due to their large theoretical capacity, low cost and great environmental benignity. Nevertheless, their further development is impeded by poor cyclic stability of ferruginous cathodes, notable side reactions/limited utilization of Fe anodes and low attainable energy density. To overcome such constrains, we herein construct Fe-ion ABs with unique anode/cathode-free configurations. Excluding massy cathode/anode redox substances, this ABs configuration is simplified into symmetric high-pore-volume carbonaceous hosts between which Fe 2+ ions smoothly shuttle upon charge/discharge processes. The operando optical and XRD detections unravel ferrous (II) salts can reversibly adsorb/deposit onto the nominal cathode, forming gel-like ferric (III) species and filling into micro trenches/caves within carbonaceous frameworks. The addition of ammonium salts helps to neutralize the acidic electrolyte and supply protophilic anions to occupy active sites on the electrodeposited Fe, endowing superb Fe plating/stripping efficiencies (~96.4 %) and cyclic lifespan over 10 3 cycles. Note that such assembled prototype ABs can deliver a remarkably increased gravimetric energy density by more than 2600 %, and high capacity retention of 94.4 % after all cyclic periods. This work may open up a novel electrode-free avenue to build high energy-density ABs relying on Fe 2+ rocking-chair shuttling and plating/stripping mechanisms.
