Abstract:Since the discovery of La@C82, a wide array of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) have been synthesized and documented. Various metals, including lanthanides, transition metals, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and actinides, have been successfully incorporated into the inert fullerene cavities. The interaction between these encapsulated metal species and the fullerene cage isomers plays a crucial role in determining distinct molecular structures and endowing versatile chemical behaviors to these compounds. In particular, recent advancements in EMFs with medium-sized carbon cages, which are among the most versatile categories of EMFs, have marked a significant breakthrough in fundamental coordination chemistry and opened up a wide range of potential applications. The formation of various abnormal metal clusters, possessing unique chemical bonding characters and geometric conformations, has been shown to be influenced by novel electron transfer mechanisms between the metal atoms and the carbon cage. Moreover, these specialized metal-cage interactions have also facilitated the stabilization of giant fullerene families and promoted the exploration of these structures in greater details, particularly with respect to the unanticipated metallofullertubes. Therefore, this review aims to highlight the new phenomena arising from these novel metal-cage interactions in the fundamental study of pristine EMFs. On this basis, we also discussed innovative applications of EMF-based supramolecular complexes that stem from their unique host-guest association.

Abstract:A metal catalyzed enlargement of fullerenes has been demonstrated by in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It was found that carbon atoms and clusters can be continuously incorporated into a closed fullerene cage at a high temperature, leading to an increase in the diameter and consequently the formation of giant fullerene with the assist of adsorbed metal atoms. Density functional theoretical simulations indeed suggest that the activation energy for the carbon incorporation and the associated Stone-Wales transformation can be substantially reduced due to the presence of metal atoms, which should be of key importance for the fullerene growth.

Abstract:Endohedral metal–metal-bonding fullerenes have recently emerged, in which encapsulated metals form a metal–metal bond. However, the physical reasons why some metal elements prefer to form metal–metal bonds inside fullerene are still unclear. Herein, we reported first-principles calculations on electronic structures, bonding properties, dynamics, and thermodynamic stabilities of endohedral metallofullerenes M2@C82 (M = Sc, Y, La, Lu). Multiple bonding analysis approaches unambiguously reveal the existence of one two-center two-electron σ covalent metal–metal bond in M2@C82 (M = Sc, Y, Lu); however, the La–La bonding interaction in La2@C82 is weaker and could not be categorized as one metal–metal covalent bond. The energy decomposition analysis on bonding interactions between an encapsulated metal dimer and fullerene cages suggested that there exist two electron-sharing bonds between a metal dimer and fullerene cages. The reasons why La2 prefers to donate electrons to fullerene cages rather than form a standard σ covalent metal–metal bond are mainly attributed to two following facts: La2 has a lower ionization potential, while the hybridization of ns, (n − 1)d, and np atomic orbitals in La2 is higher. Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations reveal that the M–M bond length at room temperature follows the trend of Sc < Lu < Y. The statistical thermodynamics calculations at different temperatures reveal that the experimentally observed endohedral metal–metal-bonding fullerenes M2@C82 have high concentrations in the endohedral fullerene formation temperature range.

Abstract:The ring-opening reaction of aromatic molecules is a significant and critical process for the construction of carbon-based and related functional materials with desired structures and properties. However, direct observation and control of such a process at a molecular level remains a challenge. Here, we employed the octahedral voids in endohedral metallofullerene (EMF) crystals as nanoreactors to accommodate aromatic m-xylene molecules and regulate the ring-opening reaction of guest m-xylene by applying a high pressure. We found that the ring-opening reaction of m-xylenes strongly depends on the degree of charge transfer between m-xylene and EMF, which can be tuned by varying the electronegativity of the carbon cages with different endohedral metals. A positive relationship between the electronegativity of fullerenes and the reactivity of m-xylene was revealed. This work demonstrates the potential of tuning the ring-opening reaction of aromatic molecules by charge transfer and manipulates the reaction at a molecule level, providing new insights into the synthesis of carbon materials and fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:For endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs), a central issue is how to correctly describe the intracluster and metal–cage interactions, which are critical for understanding their structures, stabilities, and various properties. In this work, density functional theory calculations were carried out for 13 La-based EMFs covering all four reported types and a rather wide cage size range (C32–C104). The results reveal that the usually core-like lanthanide 4f subshell may play a critical role in the structural characteristics, energetic stabilities, frontier orbital energy levels, metal charges, and chemical reactivities of these endofullerenes. Regardless of the encapsulated forms, the La-4f contributions to the chemical bonding and structural stability increase with the reduced cage sizes because of the gradually enhanced cage confinement. The combination of metal-to-nonmetal charge transfer and compression of the cage cavity exposes and effectively activates the otherwise chemically inert 4f orbitals. Molecular Structure and Chemical Property of a Divalent Metallofullerene Yb@C2(13)-C84

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) encapsulating divalent metal ions have received limited attention because of their low production yields. Here, we report the results of structural determination and chemical functionalization of a typical divalent metallofullerene, Yb@C84(II). Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies of Yb@C84/Ni(II)(OEP) cocrystals (OEP is the dianion of octaethylporphyrin) unambiguously established the chiral C2(13)-C84 cage structure and revealed multiple sites for Yb(2+), indicating a moving metal ion inside the cage. The chemical property of Yb@C2(13)-C84 was probed with the electrophillic adamantylidene carbene (1). Three monoadduct isomers were isolated and characterized. Crystallographic results of the major isomer (2b) revealed that, although the cycloaddition breaks a [5,6]-bond on the cage, Yb(2+) is localized under a hexagonal ring distant from the sites of addition. Thus, it is proved that the dynamic motion of the divalent metal ion in Yb@C84 has been effectively halted by exohedral functionalization. Spectroscopic results show that the electronic property of Yb@C2(13)-C84 is pertained in the derivatives, although the addend exerts a mild reduction effect on the electrochemical behavior of the EMF. Computational works demonstrated that addition of 1 to Yb@C2(13)-C84 is mainly driven by releasing the local strains of cage carbons rather than charge recombination, which is always prominent to the affinity of typical trivalent EMFs such as M@C2v(9)-C82 (M = Sc, Y, La, Ce, Gd) toward 1. Accordingly, it is speculated that the chemical behaviors of divalent EMFs more likely resemble those of empty fullerenes because both are closed-shell compounds, but they differ from those of trivalent EMFs, which have open-shell electronic configurations instead.

Abstract:Taking into account the diversity of fullerene ligands and metal salts, metal–fullerene frameworks (MFFs) present a variety of structures. Currently, the structural control of MFFs mainly relies on the design and synthesis of fullerene ligands, while the influence of metal building units on the structures has been rarely studied. The present work represents a systematical investigation of fullerene-linked supramolecular architectures incorporating different metal salts. Treatment of a bidentate N,N-donors fullerene ligand (L1) with six metal salts ([Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, Cd(NO3)2·4H2O, Cu(NO3)2·3H2O, Cu(OAc)2·H2O, FeCl2·4H2O and FeCl3·6H2O]) produced six one-dimensional MFFs, i.e., ZnL1(NO3)2(H2O)2 (1), CdL1(NO3)2 (2), Cu(L1)(H2O)2(NO3)2 (3), CuL1(OAc)(CH3O) (4), FeL1Cl2 (5) and FeL1Cl2(FeCl4) (6). Compounds 1–3, built with nitrates with different metal centers (M(NO3)2, M = Zn, Cd, Cu), present a 1D stair-like, 1D zigzag, and 1D linear chain structure, respectively. Compound 4, synthesized with another Cu(II) salt, Cu(OAc)2, displays a dinuclear Cu-Cu connected 1D stair-like chain structure, rather than the single Cu linked 1D linear chain obtained from Cu(NO3)2. Compounds 5 and 6, assembled from iron chloride of different oxidation states (Fe(II)Cl2 and Fe(III)Cl3) reveal a 1D zigzag and a 1D stair-like chain structure, respectively. The results demonstrate the significant influences of metal salts on the structures of metal–fullerene frameworks.

Abstract:The local structural and electronic properties of individual metallofullerenes are studied using scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and theoretical simulations. The energy-resolved metal-cage hybrid states of a single endohedral metallofullerene Dy@C82 isomer I have been spatially mapped, supporting a complex picture consisting of the orbital hybridization and charge transfer for the interaction between the cage and the metal atom. The relative position of the encapsulated Dy atom inside the cage and the molecular orientation on the surface have been inferred by comparing the experimental results with theoretical simulations. The combined technique provides promising applications in the fields of in situ characterization and diagnostics of metallofullerene-based nanodevices.
The Superatom States of Fullerenes and Their Hybridization into the Nearly Free Electron Bands of Fullerites

Abstract:Motivated by the discovery of the superatom states of C60 molecules, we investigate the factors that influence their energy and wave function hybridization into nearly free electron bands in molecular solids. As the n = 3 solutions of the radial Schrodinger equation of the central attractive potential consisting of the short-range C atom core and the long-range collective screening potentials, respectively, located on the icosahedral C60 molecule shell and within its hollow core, superatom states are distinguished by their atom-like orbitals corresponding to different orbital angular momentum states (l = 0, 1, 2,...). Because they are less tightly bound than the pi orbitals, that is, the n = 2 states, which are often exploited in the intermolecular electron transport in aromatic organic molecule semiconductors, superatom orbitals hybridize more extensively among aggregated molecules to form bands with nearly free electron dispersion. The prospect of exploiting the strong intermolecular coupling to achieve metal-like conduction in applications such as molecular electronics may be attained by lowering the energy of superatom states from 3.5 eV for single chemisorbed C60 molecules to below the Fermi level; therefore, we study how the superatom state energies depend on factors such as their aggregation into 1D-3D solids, cage size, and exo- and endohedral doping by metal atoms. We find, indeed, that if the ionization potential of endohedral atom, such as copper, is sufficiently large, superatom states can form the conduction band in the middle of the gap between the HOMO and LUMO of the parent C60 molecule. Through a plane-wave density functional theory study, we provide insights for a new paradigm for intermolecular electronic interaction beyond the conventional one among the sp(n) hybridized orbitals of the organic molecular solids that could lead to design of novel molecular materials and quantum structures with extraordinary optical and electronic properties.

Computational understanding of the structural characteristics of Sm-based endohedral metallofullerenes

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) containing samarium (Sm) are rich and cover all kinds of conventional endofullerene types. Herein, an exhaustive density functional theory study was conducted to understand the structural characteristics of all 21 Sm-based EMFs characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The mono-, di- and tri-EMFs have open-shell septet, 13-et and 19-et electronic states, respectively. The internal Sm atoms hold all the unpaired spins (six for each), which are completely shielded by carbon cages. A formal divalent state can be assigned to each metal but with obvious electron backdonation from cage orbitals, rendering the metal-metal and metal-cage interactions mainly ionic. Thus, their Sm positions can be easily located by the electrostatic potentials inside negatively charged hollow cages and also affected by intramolecular covalent interactions. All Sm-based EMFs are stable with large encapsulation energies and SOMO-LUMO gap energies. Interestingly, although the two Sm 2+ cations are repulsive, the limited cage cavity of Sm 2 @ D 2 (35)-C 88 may push them to have obvious covalent interactions. While for Sm 3 @ I h (7)-C 80 , the three Sm 2+ cations exhibit markedly reduced positive charges to effectively alleviate the intermetallic repulsions. Our findings rationalize the structural characteristics and favorable formation of all Sm-based EMFs, and could deepen the understanding for more types of EMFs.

The smallest endohedral borafullerene: structural isomerization, electronic property, aromaticity and reactivity of U@C27B

Abstract:Endohedral metalloazafullerenes (EMAFs)/metalloborafullerenes (EMBFs) are formed by encapsulating various metallic species inside the fullerene cages of which some carbon atoms are replaced by nitrogen and boron, respectively. Currently, the characterization of their exact heteroatom positions on the cage mainly depends on the calculated relative energies at T = 0 K for isomers with varied heteroatom locations. In this work, density functional theory calculations were carried out to systematically investigate the structural characteristic, electronic property, aromaticity and chemical reactivities of recently synthesized U@C27B borafullerene. Interestingly, besides the reported major U@Td-C27B-[5,5,6] isomer, calculations considering entropy effect at cage formation temperatures suggest that it may have another major U@Td-C27B-[5,5,6] isomer and a minor U@Td-C27B-[5,5,5] isomer with changed boron positions. The reported U@Td-C27B-[5,5,6] and new U@Td-C27B-[5,5,5] isomers could interconvert via a single bond rotation at elevated temperatures with energy barriers comparable to that of classical Stone-Wales rearrangement in fullerene transformation. The internal U atom formally assumes the highest VI oxidation state regardless of the cage topology or B location. Unprecedently, metal-cage bonding also shows strong covalency with the U atom and C27B cage of U@Td-C27B sharing the same 32 valence electrons to obey the 32-electron principle and Hirsch's 2(N+1)2 rule (N = 3 with a 1S21P61D101F14 electronic configuration) for spherical aromaticity, respectively. Such a novel mutual stabilization mechanism is similar to that of classical organometallic compound, ferrocene. The neutral U@Td-C27B isomers are radicals with one unpaired electron on the cage and thus may spontaneously form dimers with closed-shell structures. We propose that one could obtain U@Td-C27B monomer via radical addition reactions such as trifluoromethylation. Our work demonstrates the intriguing structures and properties as well as their correlations of the emerging EMBFs. The possible coexistence of multiple isomers and their interconversion are unprecedented and could also guide more in-depth studies on EMAFs as well as other types of heterofullerenes.

Abstract:Endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes, in which encapsulated metals form covalent metal-metal bonds inside, are an emerging class of endohedral metallofullerenes. Herein, we reported quantum-chemical studies on the electronic structures, chemical bonding, and dynamic fluxionality behavior of endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes Lu2@C2n (2n = 76-88). Multiple bonding analysis approaches, including molecular orbital analysis, the natural bond orbital analysis, electron localization function, adaptive natural density partitioning analysis, and quantum theory of atoms in molecules, have unambiguously revealed one two-center two-electron σ covalent bond between two Lu ions in fullerenes. Energy decomposition analysis with the natural orbitals for chemical valence method on the bonding nature between the encapsulated metal dimer and the fullerene cage suggested the existence of two covalent bonds between the metal dimer and fullerenes, giving rise to a covalent bonding nature between the metal dimer and fullerene cage and a formal charge model of [Lu2]2+@[C2n]2-. For Lu2@C76, the dynamic fluxionality behavior of the metal dimer Lu2 inside fullerene C76 has been revealed via locating the transition state with an energy barrier of 5 kcal/mol. Further energy decomposition analysis calculations indicate that the energy barrier is controlled by a series of terms, including the geometric deformation energy, electrostatic interaction, and orbital interactions.

Abstract:The bonding nature between rare earth metals and fullerene molecules has been investigated. The electron density distribution for nominal Sm3C70, calculated by a maximum entropy method (MEM) based on the Rietveld analysis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction pattern, unambiguously demonstrated a covalent SmC bond, which is almost as strong as the interatomic bonding of crystal Si. Furthermore, the Sm bridges two C70 molecules, producing a C70SmC70 dimer structure.

Abstract:Understanding metal-metal bonding involving f-block elements has been a challenging goal in chemistry. Here we report a series of mixed-valence di-metallofullerenes, ThDy@C 2 n (2 n = 72, 76, 78, and 80) and ThY@C 2 n (2 n = 72 and 78), which feature single electron actinide-lanthanide metal-metal bonds, characterized by structural, spectroscopic and computational methods. Crystallographic characterization unambiguously confirmed that Th and Y or Dy are encapsulated inside variably sized fullerene carbon cages. The ESR study of ThY@ D 3 h (5)-C 78 shows a doublet as expected for an unpaired electron interacting with Y, and a SQUID magnetometric study of ThDy@ D 3 h (5)-C 78 reveals a high-spin ground state for the whole molecule. Abstract:Metal ion-nanocluster coordination complexes can produce a variety of functional engineered nanomaterials with promising characteristics to enable widespread applications. Herein, the visualization observation of the interactions of metal ions and fullerene derivatives, particularly anionic fullerenols (Fol), were carried out in aqueous solutions. The alkali metal salts only resulted in salting out of Fol to gain re-soluble sediments, whereas multivalent metal cations (Mn+, n = 2, 3) modulated further assembly of Fol to produce insoluble hybrids. These provide crucial insights into the directed assembly of Fol that two major forces involved in actuation are electrostatic and coordination effects. Through the precise modulation of feed ratios of Fol to Mn+, a variety of water-soluble Mn+@Fol coordination complexes were facilely prepared and subsequently characterized by various measurements. Among them, X-ray photoelectron spectra validated the coordination effects through the metal cation and oxygen binding feature. Transmission electron microscopy delivered valuable information about diverse morphologies and locally-ordered microstructures at the nanoscale. This study opens a new opportunity for developing a preparation strategy to fabricate water-soluble metal cation-fullerenol coordination complexes with various merits for potential application in biomedical fields.

Abstract:Th@C76 has been studied by density functional theory combined with statistical mechanics calculations. The results reveal that Th@ T d(19151)-C76 satisfying the isolated pentagon rule possesses the lowest energy. Nevertheless, considering the enthalpy-entropy interplay, Th@ C1(17418)-C76 with one pair of adjacent pentagons is thermodynamically favorable at elevated temperatures, which is reported for the first time. The bonding critical points in both isomers were analyzed to disclose covalent interactions between the inner Th and cages. In addition, the Wiberg bond orders of M-C bonding in different endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) were investigated to prove stronger covalent interactions of Th-C in Th-based EMFs.

Abstract:Metallo‐supramolecular cages have garnered tremendous attention for their diverse yet molecular‐level precision structures. However, physical properties of these supramolecular ensembles, which are of potential significance in molecular electronics, remain largely unexplored. We herein constructed a series of octahedral metallo‐cages and cage‐fullerene complexes with notably enhanced structural stability. As such, we could systematically evaluate the electrical conductivity of these ensembles at both single‐molecule level and aggregated bulk state (as well‐defined films). Our findings reveal that counteranions and fullerene guests play a pivotal role in determining the electrical conductivity of aggregated state, while such effects are less significant for single‐molecule conductance. Both counteranions and fullerenes effectively tune the electronic structures and packing density of metallo‐supramolecular assemblies, and facilitate efficient charge transfer between the cage hosts and fullerenes, resulting in a notable one order of magnitude increase in electrical conductivity of the aggregated state.
