Abstract:Ta2O5/Pd hybrid microspheres were readily synthesized via a one-step thermal solution process employing a template composed of glucose carbon spheres, yielding a structure characterized by a rough and porous surface. This morphology offers an expanded contact area and increased sites for ethanol reactions of Ta2O5/Pd hybrid microspheres. At room temperature (25oC), the Ta2O5/Pd hybrid microspheres exhibited responsiveness to ethanol concentrations ranging from 50 to 700 ppm, displaying a linear response pattern to a narrow concentration gradient of 90 to 120 ppm. The hybrid exhibited notable sensitivity, manifesting a response value of 5.1 to 100 ppm ethanol. In addition, they displayed less responsiveness to other VOCs gases, were minimally affected by humidity, and maintained gas-sensitive stability for 30 days, demonstrating excellent selectivity and long-term stability. Based on the fitting curve analysis, the material theoretically demonstrated the ability to detect ethanol at concentrations as low as 101 ppb. Ta2O5/Pd hybrid microspheres modified by glucose carbon sphere templates and noble metal nanoparticles are promising candidates for ethanol room temperature sensing, providing new insights into the development of room temperature sensing.
SnO2 quantum dots modified MoS2 nanoflowers for enhanced ethanol sensing performance

Abstract:MoS2 nanoflowers assembled from two-dimensional nanosheets modified with SnO2 quantum dots were prepared by hydrothermal method and used for ethanol detection. SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS were used to analyze the morphology, structure, and composition of the composites. The gas sensing test results showed that SnO2 QD modified MoS2 had a higher response to ethanol, better selectivity, and lower operating temperature than SnO2 QD. In addition, the problems of insensitivity to gases, long response time, and unrecoverable response observed in MoS2 sensors were also improved. The enhanced ethanol sensing performance of SnO2 QD modified MoS2 were ascribed to the large specific area of MoS2 nanoflowers and plentiful dangling bonds of SnO2 QD. The formation of heterojunction between SnO2 and MoS2 nanograins also contributed to the enhancement of gas sensitivity. The modification of MoS2 with metal oxide quantum dots provides an experimental reference for the development of high-performance MoS2 based gas sensors.

Metal‐Organic Frameworks‐Derived Porous In2O3 Hollow Nanorod for High‐Performance Ethanol Gas Sensor

Abstract:Designing hollow micro/nano structures for gas sensing materials is highly desirable for boosting gas sensing properties and still remains challenging, especially through a simple and economic way. Herein, porous In2O3 hollow nanorod (In2O3-HNR), which was successfully fabricated by thermal decomposition of an In-MOF (CPP-3) precursor, was applied as gas sensing materials. The pristine CPP-3 and obtained In2O3-HNR were systematically characterized by various techniques, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA-DTA, XPS, Raman and N-2 physisorption. Characterization results indicated that the hexagonal rod-like shape of original CPP-3 was maintained after calcination, whereas the surface became rough and concave. In addition, the obtained In2O3-HNR displayed a hollow interior with porous shell composed by In2O3 nanoparticles (9 nm). Taking advantage of this unique porous nanostructure, In2O3-HNR exhibited a response as high as 6.2 to 5 ppm ethanol at operating temperature of 200 degrees C, fast response and recovery (3 and 4 s, respectively), and good selectivity to ethanol. The excellent ethanol-sensing properties endow this In-MOF templated In2O3-HNR material with a promising application in practical detection of ethanol gas. This method could be extended to the fabrication of other micro/nano structures with well-defined morphology and composition for high-performance gas sensing considering diversity of MOFs family.

The sensitivity of pure CuGaO 2 based gas sensor to 100 ppm acetic acid and benzene vapor was 1.4 at 25 o C. The sensitivity of MoS 2 -CuGaO 2 composite (M − 5) was 6.0 towards 100 ppm ethanol vapor at 25 o C. And the detection limit of MoS 2 -CuGaO 2 (M − 5) based sensor was 0.1 ppm. The results demonstrated that MoS 2 had effect on the selectivity and sensitivity of the MoS 2 -CuGaO 2 composites. M − 5 composite is considered to be promising for ethanol sensing application in room temperature.

Abstract:Semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors have been frequently used for real-time monitoring of various gases in different applications. However, the working temperature is usually high (>150 °C), which limits their application. In this work, the composites of In2O3 nanotubes derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) and Cr2O3 nanoparticles were successfully prepared via solvothermal and impregnation method. The structure, surface morphology and elementary of In2O3/Cr2O3 composites were characterized. Due to the synergistic effects of unique hollow tube structure, large specific surface area and p-n heterojunctions, the In2O3/Cr2O3 composites sensor exhibits excellent ethanol sensing performance at room temperature, including high response under low concentration (less than 5 ppm), excellent selectivity, good repeatability, fast response/recovery time, and long-term stability. The sensing mechanism was discussed in detail. This work provides a feasible synthesis strategy to prepare metal oxide-based hybrid composites, which could be used for fabrication of gas sensor with low energy consumption and high response.

Abstract:A high-performance acetone gas sensor based on Ru-MoSe2 nanoflowers was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The gas-sensing properties of MoSe2 and Ru-MoSe2 were investigated at room temperature. The Ru-MoSe2 based sensor exhibits high sensitivity, good selectivity, and stability, which effectively enhance the acetone sensing performance. The sensitivity of Ru-doped MoSe2 is more than six times that of MoSe2 sensor. In addition, the first-principle density functional theory was employed to explore the acetone sensing mechanism of Ru-MoSe2. The results indicate that the developed Ru-doped MoSe2 sensor has promising prospect in high-performance acetone detection, which is expected to be used for diagnosing diabetes in the future.

Abstract:Improving the sensing sensitivity and lowering the working temperature are the critical issues for the practical application of gas sensors. For a gas sensor, the sensing materials play important roles in determining the sensing properties. In the present work, gamma-Fe2O3 microspheres composed of nanoparticles were successfully fabricated by a typical facile hydrothermal process and a following annealing treatment. Interestingly, the as-synthesized gamma-Fe2O3 microspheres showed excellent sensing properties for the detection of ethanol gas with high sensitivity, and especially working temperature as low as room temperature. The gas sensing results showed that at the optimal operating temperature (200 degrees C), the response intensity of gamma-Fe2O3 microspheres for 1000 ppm ethanol gas could reach 74.6 and the limit of detection (LOD) was about 0.026 ppm. At room temperature, the gamma-Fe2O3 microspheres still demonstrated a good response to different concentrations of ethanol gas from 1 to 1000 ppm, with a very good selectivity over other gas species and a good stability. This study indicated that the gamma-Fe2O3 phase could be a type of promising room-temperature gas sensing material for ethanol gas detection.

Abstract:At room temperature, high sensitivity for detecting ethanol has been achieved from α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanowire piezo-nanogenerator as self-powered gas sensor. Such ethanol sensing can be ascribed to piezo-surface coupling effect of the heterostructured nanocomposites. The results demonstrate a novel approach for room-temperature ethanol sensors and promote the development of self-powered sensing.

Abstract:This study utilized a hydrothermal method and air calcination to prepare a bimetallic organic framework (MOFs) derived Co3O4/SnO2 nanocomposite material, which was employed as a sensing material for ethanol detection. The structural, elemental composition, and surface morphology of Co3O4/SnO2 nanocomposite materials were defined using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Compared to SnO2 nanoparticles derived from metal-organic frameworks, the bimetallic metal-organic framework-derived Co3O4/SnO2 nanocomposite material exhibits significantly superior ethanol sensing performance. At 225 °C, the response value (R=Ra/Rg) for 100 ppm ethanol is 135, demonstrating excellent repeatability, selectivity and stability. Gas sensitivity assessment findings indicate that the 3 at% (Co/Sn) Co3O4/SnO2 nanocomposite is an excellent gas sensing material, providing strong technical support for ethanol detection and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:In this paper, we fabricated a high-performance ethanol sensor using layer-by-layer self-assembled urchin-like alpha-iron oxide (α-Fe2O3) hollow microspheres/molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) nanosheets heterostructure as sensitive materials. The nanostructural, morphological, and compositional properties of the as-prepared α-Fe2O3/MoS2 heterostructure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which confirmed its successful preparation and rationality. The α-Fe2O3/MoS2 nanocomposite sensor shows good selectivity, excellent reproducibility, fast response/recovery time and low detection limit towards ethanol gas at room temperature, which is superior to the single component of α-Fe2O3 hollow microspheres and MoS2 nanosheets. Furthermore, the response of the α-Fe2O3/MoS2 nanocomposite sensor as a function of ethanol gas concentration was also demonstrated. The enhanced ethanol sensing properties of the α-Fe2O3/MoS2 nanocomposite sensor were ascribed to the synergistic effect and heterojunction between the urchin-Like α-Fe2O3 hollow microspheres and MoS2 nanosheets. This work verifies that the hierarchical α-Fe2O3/MoS2 nanoheterostructure is a potential candidate for fabricating room-temperature ethanol gas sensor.

Abstract:A novel flexible room temperature ethanol gas sensor was fabricated and demonstrated in this paper. The polyimide (PI) substrate-based sensor was formed by depositing a mixture of SnO2 nanopowder and poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDAC) on as-patterned interdigitated electrodes. PDDAC acted both as the binder, promoting the adhesion between SnO2 and the flexible PI substrate, and the dopant. We found that the response of SnO2-PDDAC sensor is significantly higher than that of SnO2 alone, indicating that the doping with PDDAC effectively improved the sensor performance. The SnO2-PDDAC sensor has a detection limit of 10 ppm at room temperature and shows good selectivity to ethanol, making it very suitable for monitoring drunken driving. The microstructures of the samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), and the sensing mechanism is also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Exploring high-performance sensing materials is ultra-important for safety control. Herein, 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and its microstructure is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is confirmed that the as-prepared nanocomposites are constituted by 1D alpha-MoO3 nanobelts (200-300 nm in width), with the surface loaded with fine ZnO nanoparticles. Sensing properties of the alpha-MoO3 and 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites to ethanol are measured and compared. Interestingly, the ZnO-decorated alpha-MoO3 nanobelts exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity to ethanol at relatively low operating temperature (250 degrees C) when compared with that of the raw alpha-MoO3 nanobelts, indicating a good candidate of 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites for future ethanol detection. Facile synthesis of Ag lattice doped mesoporous In2O3 nanocubes for high performance ethanol sensing

Abstract:Ag lattice doped In2O3 with a mesoporous structure was synthesized through a combination of hydrothermal and calcination methods. The structural and morphological characteristics were assessed using XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, BET, and XPS analyses. Gas sensing measurements revealed that the 7.0 mol% Ag-doped In2O3 sensor displayed a response of 420 towards 100 ppm ethanol at 140 °C, which was 19 times higher than that of the pure In2O3 gas sensor. Density functional theory calculations indicated that Ag-doped In2O3 exhibited enhanced adsorption performance, higher adsorption energy, and electron transfer, resulting in higher sensitivity to ethanol. These findings were also supported by the electronic band structure, work function, and DOS analyses. These results indicated that the Ag doped mesoporous In2O3 has high potential for the preparation of high-performance ethanol sensors in practical applications.

Abstract:Ethanol is one of the most widely consumed chemicals and has high volatility. Long-term exposure to ethanol can cause irritation and damage to human organs and even lead to cancer. Therefore, reliable, low-cost and low-power ethanol gas sensors are urgently needed. However, due to the high barrier associated with the reaction between adsorbed oxygen and ethanol gas, current commonly used chemiresistive sensors are difficult to detect low concentration of ethanol gas at room temperature. Herein, we developed a 3D composite scaffold sensor, i.e. iron oxide nanoparticles decorated carbon nanofiber scaffolds (CNFs) from both the inside and outside (named Fe2O3@FCNFs) through interface engineering. The Fe2O3@FCNFs composite scaffold exhibited a 6-fold increase in specific surface area as compared to that of the FCNFs, and its carrier concentration of was one order higher than that of its counterpart. Therefore, the typical Fe2O3@FCNFs sensor exhibited an unanticipated good response to ethanol gas at room temperature, including high sensitivity (-6.268% toward 100 ppm) and low limit of detection (10 ppm). This study provides an effective solution for preparing room-temperature chemiresistive ethanol gas sensors, which can be extended to other gas detection by tuning the semiconductor sensitive materials.
Coaxial electrospinning Fe2O3@Co3O4 double-shelled nanotubes for enhanced ethanol sensing performance in a wide humidity range

Abstract:Gas sensors play a crucial part in air monitoring and exclusive detection of exhaled biomarkers. Co3O4 is regarded as a promising gas sensing material in lower temperatures (<200 °C) due to its affinity with oxygen and multivalent characteristics. However, its poor intrinsic conductivity leads to a lower response, hindering further practical applications. The introduction of Fe2O3 is desired to enhance the conductivity and regulate oxygen-vacancy defects. Thus, the Fe2O3@Co3O4 double-shelled nanotubes (DSNTs) for ethanol detection were successfully synthesized through a facile coaxial electrospinning route. The Fe2O3@Co3O4-1 DSNTs based sensor exhibited a lower detection limit (1 ppm) at 160 °C, and a remarkable response 3.5 times higher than that of pure Co3O4 HNTs. The sensor still maintained a good response even under a high humidity of 85%. An oxygen adsorption model combined with an energy band structure diagram was proposed to explain the enhanced sensing mechanism. The enhanced gas-sensing performance can be attributed to double-shelled hollow structures and heterojunctions, which promoted the active sites for gas adsorption on the surface of sensing layers.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection in ultra-low concentrations is highly demanded in industry and daily life. Ethanol is one of the most encountered VOCs. Through calcining the precursor of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are in situ grown on 2D Ti3C2Tx sheets, Co3O4/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites with the mesoporous structure were synthesized for ethanol sensing. The results showed that the Co3O4/Ti3C2Tx sensor has an ultra-high response ( (190 towards 50 ppm ethanol), fast response/recovery speed (50 s/45 s to 50 ppm ethanol), a low detection limit (<1 ppm), ideal selectivity and long-term stability. Compared to the pure Co3O4 and Ti3C2Tx sensors, the Co3O4/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites sensor significantly improves ethanol-sensing performance. Within the nanocomposites, the 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheet acts as a favorable platform for the uniform nucleation and growth of Co3O4, while the mesoporous Co3O4 can provide more adsorption sites for gas sensing. In addition, the formation of hybrid heterojunction is also an essential factor for enhanced sensing behaviors. This work provides a new avenue to develop nanocomposites based on metal oxide and 2D materials for VOCs sensing.

Abstract:Designing and constructing heterostrucutres is the trend of enhancing sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductor based gas sensors. A new kind of porous Co3O4/Ta2O5 heterostructure hollow nanospheres was successfully synthesized by the assistance of carbon colloidal nanospheres and following annealing. The Ta2O5 nanostructures with ultrathin hollow spherical shell (similar to 5 nm) were attached with numerous Co3O4 nanoparticles, forming heterojunction in the contact surface. The Ta2O5 hollow spheres act as the supporting model, hindering the aggregation of Co3O4 nanoparticles and possessing more specific surface area. For room temperature (25 degrees C) gas sensing application, the Co3O4/ Ta2O5 hollow nanospheres exhibited outstanding ethanol detecting properties. The gas response toward 10, 20, 50, and 100 ppm of ethanol achieved 20%, 50%, 90% and 180%, respectively. The Co3O4/Ta2O5 hollow nanospheres also exhibited outstanding selectively and reliable stability, which can be attributed to the formation of the heterojunction in the contact surface of Co3O4 and Ta2O5, leading to the extension of electron depletion layer.
