Abstract:It was brooky and swampy in ancient Liangzhu city about 5 000 years ago.In order to rapidly investigate the distribution of palaeo-drainage system and the range of remains layer in Liangzhu city-site and further to reveal the background of the geographical environments,several geophysical methods,such as magnetic,electrical tomography,ground-penetrating radar(GPR) and radioactivity survey,were employed.Most of the geophysical methods showed obvious anormalies in palaeo-drainage systems and the remains layers,and the anormalies were consistent with the drilling results.The survey results show that palaeo-drainage system and the remains layer can be distinguished by these integrated surveys and interpretations All these indicate that geophysical methods are effective,feasible and cost-efficient for archeological exploration and the integrated geophysical methods are useful to identify and verify the archeological anomaly in some cases by comparison and validation.

Abstract:The pyramids of Giza originally overlooked a now defunct arm of the Nile. This fluvial channel, the Khufu branch, enabled navigation to the Pyramid Harbor complex but its precise environmental history is unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, we use pollen-derived vegetation patterns to reconstruct 8,000 y of fluvial variations on the Giza floodplain. After a high-stand level concomitant with the African Humid Period, our results show that Giza's waterscapes responded to a gradual insolation-driven aridification of East Africa, with the lowest Nile levels recorded at the end of the Dynastic Period. The Khufu branch remained at a high-water level (∼40% of its Holocene maximum) during the reigns of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, facilitating the transportation of construction materials to the Giza Pyramid Complex.

Abstract:Liangzhu Culture is an important culture in the late neolithic age and has a significant connection to the origin of the Chinese civilization. The archaeological site of Liangzhu ancient city located in Pinyao, Hangzhou, represents the crown of Liangzhu development. We collected soil samples from the Liangzhu cultural layer, the overlying silty soil and the sediments of surrounding rivers and the Qiantang River, measuring and analyzing their Sr-Nd isotopic compositions. Comparing variations between the silty soil and the soil of the Liangzhu cultural layer, together with some recent studies of the sediments of the Yangtze River and the East China Sea, we infer that the silty soil may be a mixture of sediments from the East China Sea and the Qiantang River. Therefore, transgression during that period may result in the collapse of the Liangzhu Culture.

Abstract:Conceptual landscapes in Egypt show a remarkable continuity - for as long as 2000 years - in the use of symbols and in the interplay between natural and man-built features. Directionality, both in the sense of succession of elements and of orientation of single buildings and tombs, plays a key role in governing the landscape in accordance with the idea of "cosmic" order, which was the basis of the temporal power of the pharaoh. Comparing satellite image with local surveys and using simple web-based instruments for tracing visibility lines helps in understanding connections and messages which were meant to be clear and obvious in ancient times but may be lost, or forgotten, today. In particular, the prominent role of astronomical and topographical alignments in the planning of successive monuments comes out at sites like Abydos, Giza, Dahshur and at Western Thebes. The way in which the same symbols and elements were elaborated by the "heretic" pharaoh Akhenaten in planning the landscape of his capital at Amarna is also highlighted.

Abstract:Although the Nile is one of the largest rivers in the world and played a central role in ancient Egyptian life, little is known about its response to climatic change during the Holocene. Here we present a framework for the evolution of the Egyptian Nile, demonstrating how climatic and environmental changes have shaped the landscape of the Egyptian Nile Valley over the past 11,500 years, including the civilization of ancient Egypt (~5,000 to 2,000 years ago). Using data from over 80 sediment cores drilled in a transect spanning the Nile Valley near Luxor, pinned in time by 48 optically stimulated luminescence ages, we reconstruct the dynamics of the Nile River during the Holocene in the vicinity of UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Karnak and Luxor temples. According to our reconstruction, valley incision occurred from the start of the record until approximately 4,000 years ago and then rapidly shifted to massive floodplain aggradation. We argue that this relatively abrupt change in the riverine landscape near Luxor from the Middle to Late Holocene was linked to a shift towards a drier regional hydroclimate around this time. Such a dramatic change in river sediment dynamics could have had local agro-economic consequences.

Abstract:Understanding the characteristics of modern floodplain sediment (MFS) is important for geomorphological, paleoclimatic, sedimentation, and environmental investigations. We collected samples from present floodplain Nile sediments in Egypt's Sohag area and used mineralogical and geochemical (i.e., major and trace elements) proxies to investigate the characteristics and establish their provenances, climatic conditions during deposition, and weathering influence. The study revealed that the Nile floodplain sediments are composed mainly of silt (26–77%), clay fraction (7–44%), and sand content (3–63%), and their texture is classified as clayey silt. These sediments are classified geochemically as greywacke to shale. The mineralogical studies revealed two main assemblages of heavy minerals: the first assemblage represented by magnetite, goethite, zircon, epidote, and garnet and reflects the basement complex in the Eastern Desert and its surrounding rocks; and the second assemblage of goethite, pyroxene, hornblend, and mica of fooldplain deposits derived from the Ethiopian highlands. The geochemical studies indicate that the Nile sediments are immature and formed due to the moderate degree and nonsteady chemical weathering of the parent rocks. The geochemical studies show different mixed sources of sediments, where fine sediments are mostly mafic igneous with a partial contribution from siliscic sedimentary rocks, while the coarser ones are derived mainly from siliscic sedimentary and acidic igneous rocks. The sediments of the presented modern fooldplain reflected two different tectonic setting source areas (collision and continental rift tectonic setting for high silica and low silica samples, respectively) that were shared in supplying the sediments to the present basin. The study revealed that the investigated area may become desertified as a result of climate change and human activities such as salinity, fertiliser use, sand encroachment, and pollution.

Abstract:In archaeo‐geophysical investigations, the accuracy and resolution of the generated geophysical models are crucial parameters for excavation decision. Therefore, the combined use of different geophysical data sets is necessary to improve the interpretability of archaeological ruins, particularly in case of low physical contrast objects. The present study's objective is to validate the outputs of integrated ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys in Tanis, which is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Nile Delta, Egypt. The GPR survey was carried out along an area of 24 × 31.5 m with profile interval of 0.5 m in two orthogonal directions using 100, 200 and 600 MHz shielded antenna. Moreover, nine ERT profiles were performed along the same GPR lines for comparison and integration using Wenner‐beta (WB) and dipole–dipole (DD) arrays with 1 m electrode spacing and 3 m profile spacing. In addition, the ERT measurements were executed by implementing two tie lines of the same length, electrode spacing and electrode arrays to reduce the effect of banding or directional bias. The processed 2D GPR and ERT profiles have illustrated series of mud‐brick walls within the top 2 m in silt–clay background which is underlined by the turtle‐back of Sand Island. In such conditions, the mud‐brick walls in conductive soils with complex spatial distributions have produced tricky and difficult anomalies to be interpreted using only 2D data sets. To overcome this challenging case, the GPR orthogonal profiles were collated in 3D domain, while the ERT profiles were gathered and inverted using 3D robust inversion algorithm and validated with an identified mud‐brick wall. Therefore, the created 3D visualizations demonstrated the efficiency of the joint use of the ERT and GPR surveys as an enhanced mapping tool for buried archaeological ruins and can be used at similar archaeological sites all over the world.

Abstract:The course of the Nile in northern Sudan follows a contorted path through bedrocks, creating the Great Bend. Few years ago, the satellite images showed a fertile strip of land with villages, where paleochannels of the river hosted many fields with cultivations and archaeological sites. Now, a huge part of this valley is under the waters of Merowe Dam reservoir. Comparing the images of the region before and after the dam gates were closed, we can see that the reservoir created itself through flooding the paleochannels.

Abstract:Many quarries in East Cairo are used as solid waste landfills. These locations are now impossible to find from the ground surface due to the urban development of New Cairo. In this study, a subterranean landfill site near the Ring Road in East Cairo, Egypt, was found and delineated using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data and multi-temporal high-resolution satellite imagery. Up to 2005, the research location was a WNW-oriented quarry that had been randomly filled with diverse solid materials, according to an analysis of changes shown on the satellite images. Based on the change detection data, ERT survey planning was done. The ERT measurements identified the infill material-occupied electrically conductive zones on the plan view and separated them from the resistive zones, representing the natural soil areas. Two distinct geoelectrical units could be distinguished by combining the satellite images and the ERT results: Unit-2 (the lower unit) is characterized by high resistivity values that characterize the original soil (bedrock), whereas Unit-1 (the upper unit) is defined by low to moderate resistivity values that are the solid waste materials. The contact between the bedrock and the infill materials was mapped and delineated using the closely spaced grid of ERT profiles and the thorough topographic map. Ground surface elevation, the depth of Unit 1's lower boundary, and this unit's thickness change throughout the researched site are some criteria that might be addressed and used to characterize the unit of interest (Unit 1).

Abstract:The goal of the present study is to investigate, delineate, and evaluate the shallow Miocene groundwater aquifer with vertical and lateral facies variations in the Gara oasis, western desert of Egypt. This oasis represents a typical arid region in North Africa. Through grid texture analysis, lineament detection, edge detection, thresholding, and identifying areas of structural complexity from the filtered residual reduced-to-pole magnetic anomaly map, it is possible to outline the fracture zones that principally control the groundwater aquifers and water flow in the area. The groundwater quality and quantity are examined hydro-geochemically through nine groundwater samples that were gathered from wells and springs distributed throughout the area around Gara Lake. Measurements of physio-chemical parameters (TDS, pH, and EC) are carried out and its spatial distribution is critically studied. The results reveal that the ion-exchange process caused by water-rock interaction is the dominant process. Furthermore, the main ions in the groundwater in the study areas were Na and Cl. This might be due to evaporation or halite dissolution with the upward flow of waters through the fractures from the deep aquifer of the Nubian sandstone to the shallow aquifer of the fractured Miocene limestone.

Abstract:New communities have been established in Egypt since 1990s. Among those are El Nubariya and El Bustan cities with associated land reclamation activities. These land reclamation projects are still having environmental implications. The main objective of this work is to delineate and detect one of these implications representing the rising of the groundwater level and related impacts along El-Nasr Canal and surroundings. It is evident that there is a remarkable change in groundwater level through monitoring of the groundwater level from 1960 to 2010. This is referred to the continuous recharge of the surface water from irrigation canals for reclamation activities. To achieve the objective of this work, 32 discrete vertical electrical soundings (VES) have been measured in the study area. 1-D/2-D data analysis are applied for covering the lack of hydrogeological information and for mapping the areas affected by this phenomenon. From the resistivity sounding results, it is observed that the groundwater mound is appeared northwest of El-Nasr Canal and along Cairo-Alexanderia desert road. This is attributed to the application of flood irrigation method in new reclaimed areas, bad management, unplanning of water resources, and the recharge of aquifer from the surface irrigation system.

Abstract:In the hyperarid eastern Sahara, west of the Nile River in Egypt, areas with vegetated eolian mounds have attracted people and animals because of shallow groundwater that at times of high water tables may be reached by hand digging shallow wells. An eolian phreatophytic mound with a living arak bush (Silvadora persica L.) on top, one of three known from this region of SW Egypt, provided a stratigraphic record of its growth. The geochronology of the mounds aggradation and that of a nearby tarfa mound (Tamarix nilatica Bunge) was determined by radiocarbon dating plant macrofossils within the stratigraphic succession. Eolian aggradation of the mound postdates deflation that eroded playa sediments of the Neolithic pluvial that ended ca. 5000 BP and appears to be due to a resurgence of the shallow aquifer. Subsequent deflation of the mounds is apparently due to post-1500 BP aridity. Regional vegetation is described in the Appendix I.

Abstract:The new Luxor city was proposed by the Egyptian government as a new constructional and building site in order to face the increasing population density around the two banks of the river Nile. It is important prior construction of buildings to characterize the foundation soil. So, vertical electrical resistivity survey and mineralogical investigation were conducted for this purpose. The results obtained from the interpretation of the sounding data indicate that the lithological succession of the study area consists of four geoelectric layers. The top layer corresponds to the surface loose sediments of conglomerate, gravel, and sand. The second geoelectric layer is composed of sand and gravel. The third layer is composed of silty clay, sandy clay, and clayey sand. The fourth geoelectric layer is composed of dry sandstone. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results of samples collected from the clay-rich layer revealed the presence of smectite mineral as predominate clay minerals which is characterized by its swell potentiality on wetting. Accordingly, the clay zone recorded within the third layer must be taken into consideration during designing the foundations at new Luxor city especially this layer was located at shallow depth range between 1.6 and 7.5 m and attains a relatively big thickness that reach up to 33.5 m in some parts. This study emphasizes the importance of the integration of geophysical investigation and mineralogical analysis of the foundation soil for optimal characterization of a site.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Geophysical and geological studies play a fundamental role in the strategic and sustainable utilization of natural resources, especially that of fossil groundwater, in arid regions. The geophysical exploration of shallow groundwater aquifers is common in arid regions. In this work, a feasibility study of future development plans in the Siwa Oasis, Egypt, was carried out. A land electric resistivity survey was conducted, and approximately 14 vertical electric soundings were measured covering the Siwa Oasis, northwestern desert, Egypt. A detailed surface geology study was also conducted to study the underground water aquifer. Digital filters were applied to the reduced to pole-available magnetic data covering the area. The normalized source strength transformation and tilt depth were calculated and applied to delineate the possible structures that may control the shallow and deep aquifers in the area. The integrated interpretation showed the presence of four main geoelectric layers forming the shallow section of the Siwa Oasis down to 220 m. These layers varied in their resistivity and rock constituents from very low (0.2 Ω m) to very high (6200 Ω m) values. The calculated hydraulic parameters showed that the uppermost central area and the eastern area were the most promising areas for the required water development. Finally, based on the integrated interpretation and the estimated shallow aquifer potentiality, a land use map for the Siwa Oasis was produced to assist future strategic development of the region.</p>

Abstract:The Shuanghuaishu (SHS) site in China is one of the 100 most important archaeological discoveries over the past 100 years; its historical heritage can be traced directly back 5300 years. Understanding the early landscape of the site would provide important information about the origin of Chinese civilization. The SHS site is buried and surface traces are difficult to see; therefore, we attempted to reconstruct the early landscape of the site based on a current surface landscape model and environmental archaeological analysis. We created a modern three-dimensional (3D) landscape model of the study area from high spatial resolution unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aerial photographs and analysed the distance change between the Yellow River and SHS site in the past 60 years from CORONA and Landsat images. By combining environmental archaeological survey results, archaeological excavation data, relevant papers, and field measurements, we reconstructed the paleotopography of the SHS site during the Yangshao period (7000–5000 aBP). On this basis, 3D natural and human landscapes during the Yangshao period were rebuilt. The results show that (1) Satellite images acquired at different resolutions can provide multiscale spatial information about the site, and high-precision models of current conditions can be quickly generated from UAV aerial photography. (2) From 1960 to 2020, the shortest distance between the SHS site and the Yellow River was approximately 512 m. The location of bedrock on Mang Mountain can be used to infer the early extent of the northern terrace at the site. (3) Environmental archaeology provided information about the palaeoenvironment of the site area. By incorporating spatial information technology and 3D visualization, we can better restore the early landscape of the SHS site. Our work integrates environmental archaeology, field archaeology, and spatial technology, enabling data and modelling support for the visual interpretation of the SHS site.
