Abstract:Quantifying slip rates and earthquake occurrence of active faults on the Shan Plateau, southeast of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, is critical to assessing the seismic hazard and understanding the kinematics and geodynamics of this region. Most previous estimates of slip rates are averaged over either many millions of years using offset geological markers or decades using GPS. Well-constrained millennial slip rates of these faults remain sparse and constraints on recurrence rates of damaging earthquakes exist only for a few faults. Here we investigate the millennial slip rate and timing of recent earthquakes on the Jinghong fault, one of the geomorphically most significant sinistral-slip faults on the central Shan Plateau. We map and reconstruct fault offset (18 +/- 5m) of alluvial fan features at Manpa on the central Jinghong fault, using a 0.1 m-resolution digital surface model obtained from an unmanned aerial vehicle survey. We establish a slip rate, <= 2.5 +/- 0.7 mm/yr over the past similar to 7000 years, using pit-exposed stratigraphy. This millennial slip rate is consistent with rates averaged over both decadal and million-year timescales. Excavations at three sites near the town of Gelanghe on the northeastern Jinghong fault demonstrate 1) that the last seismic ground-rupture occurred between 482 and 889 cal yr BP, most likely in the narrower window 824-767 cal yr BP, if the lack of large earthquakes in the historical earthquake record is reliable, and 2) that multiple fault ruptures have occurred since similar to 3618 cal yr BP. Combining this finding with a lack of large earthquakes in the similar to 800-year-long Chinese historic record in this region, we suggest an average recurrence interval of seismic ground-ruptures on the order of similar to 1000 years. This recurrence interval is consistent with the slip rate of the Jinghong fault and the size and earthquake frequency on other sinistral faults on the Shan Plateau.

Abstract:Earthquakes induced by reservoir impoundment pose great risk to property and lives worldwide, but studies demonstrating relationships between reservoir water levels, specific faults, and the local geology are rare. Here we show that the 2013 M5.1 Badong Earthquake, the largest earthquake so far in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) region of China, occurred at a shallow depth on a right-lateral south-dipping strike-slip fault. The fault is at least 15km long and intercepts the TGR at the NS-running Shennongxi River. We find that the earthquake and its foreshocks and aftershocks are confined to a fractured Triassic carbonate formation that crops out in the reservoir. The precise locations of earthquakes coupled with the local geology suggest that the sequence was induced by high pore pressure due to reservoir water infiltration in a specific rock type. The newly identified fault has the potential to generate earthquakes of magnitude approaching the designed seismic intensity limit of the Three Gorges Dam. In this study, we determined focal mechanism and depth of the 2013 M 5.1 Badong Earthquake, the largest earthquake so far in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) region of China. We also obtained high-precision locations of 205 events in this earthquake sequence. The results show that these earthquakes occurred at shallow depths between 1 and 5km on a steep south-dipping fault. The fault is at least 15km long and intercepts TGR at the NS-running Shennongxi River. A field survey indicates that the earthquakes are confined to a fractured rock formation that crops out in the reservoir. The precise locations of earthquakes coupled with the local geology suggest that they were induced by high pore pressure due to reservoir water infiltration. The newly identified fault is a seismic risk to the Three Gorges Dam. The findings are important because (1) they highlight the importance of understanding the detailed local hydrologic system in risk assessment, and (2) the fact that the seismogenic fault was missed before demonstrates the limitations of preconstruction risk-assessment surveys.

Abstract:Due to continued continental convergence of Indian–Eurasian plates, the Himalayan region witnessed several high-magnitude earthquakes and is prone to major seismic events in future as well. Most of the countries with seismically active faults examine paleo seismic data in site specific as well as regional seismic hazard analyses. Hence, it is of great concern to find evidence for prehistoric earthquakes following the morphotectonic route and establish the recurrence intervals of potential earthquakes by characterising and dating large prehistoric events. The present study discusses the paleo seismicity and induced deformational features in the Trans-Yamuna region of the outer Northwest Himalaya by interpreting soft sediment deformation and paleo-liquefaction features. We targeted two sites along the Trans-Yamuna active fault system, which are located in the Sirmurital and Bharli villages; both of these locations are close to Doon Valley along the Main Boundary Thrust. Temporal distribution of paleo-liquefaction features evident major seismic events likely to occur during 16th and 19th centuries, which clearly indicates reactivation of faults in this hinterland region that could experience major rupture during the recurrence of large magnitude earthquake and therefore, constructional activities are a matter of great concern to design structures accordingly.

Abstract:The ongoing Indo-Eurasian convergence leads to great megathrust earthquakes in the Himalayan region, affecting the life and infrastructure of the world's most densely populated areas adjoining the Himalaya. The ~2500-km long Himalayan arc has experienced several earthquakes having magnitude greater than Mw 7.5 during the last millennium. While palaeoseismic and fault slip-rate studies have gained pace during the last few decades in the Western and Central Himalayan regions, the Eastern Himalaya and contiguous regions remain understudied. Even though geological evidence of great earthquakes in 1697, 1714, and 1950 CE has been reported in the Eastern Himalaya, the lateral extent of their rupture is still debated due to limited and sparse palaeoseismic studies. Furthermore, the segmentation of the eastern Himalaya raises concerns about the role of sub-surface transverse structures in controlling the rupture propagation of large to great earthquakes. Hence, we have compiled all the palaeo-earthquake studies carried out in the eastern part of the Himalayan convergent plate margin of the Indian Subcontinent and identified the potential gap areas with the slip deficit, which are capable of generating Mw > 8 earthquakes in the future. This study aims to provide a foundation for future palaeo-earthquake studies, which are crucial in understanding the earthquake recurrence and the strain release pattern in the region.

Abstract:Outburst flood sediments are studied on the upper course of the Yangtze River (known as the Jinsha River) where is a key region for the development of hydroelectric power. As the history and magnitude of outburst flooding in this stretch of the Jinsha River during historic times has remained largely undocumented, we have endeavored as part of this study to conduct field investigations into, and provide numerical dating (using OSL and C-14 dating techniques) of outburst flood evidence found in the First Bend area of the Yangtze River. Carbonized nutshells and charcoal from the ancient settlement yielded C-14 ages that precisely pinpointed an outburst flood event similar to 1200-1300 cal yr BP, during China's Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE). However, OSL ages using the minimum age model for all outburst flood samples ranged from 9.1 to 1.8 ka, which was similar to 0.5-7.8 ka older than the C-14-dated outburst flood. This discrepancy suggests a potential overestimation of quartz age when dating outburst flood sediments from the Holocene period. Furthermore, using 2D hydraulic modeling, we estimated the magnitude of the aforementioned outburst flood, revealing a reconstructed peak flow discharge of 51,000-55,300 m(3)/s. This discharge was three times greater than the 10,000-year flood for the hydroelectric power station nearest to the study area. Our study underscores the significant role of combining archaeological and geological evidence in enhancing paleoflood hydrology research. Through a multidisciplinary approach, our findings emphasize the importance of paleoflood hydrology studies in comprehending both the latent and catastrophic flood risks in alpine mountain areas amid the context of global warming.
Impact of floods and river-bank erosion on the riverine people in Manikchak Block of Malda District, West Bengal

Abstract:Floods and river-bank erosion are the most frequent natural hazards in India, specifically in the deltaic regions. In West Bengal, floods and river-bank erosion predominantly affect Malda district as it is located in the moribund part of the Bengal delta. This article studies the recent trend of shifting course of the River Ganga and the effects of floods and consequent river-bank erosion on livelihoods of the residents of chars [The chars (called Diara in the upper reaches of the Gangetic plains) are virgin, low-lying river islands and sand bars occurring in the plains, particularly the deltaic parts of rivers (Lahiri-Dutt and Samanta, South Asia: J South Asia Stud 30:327-350, 2007).] and river-bank areas of Manikchak block in the Malda district. Around 300 sample households were selected by random stratified sampling technique from four gram panchayats of Manikchak block. Both primary and secondary data have been used. After analysing satellite images from the year 1973 to 2018, it has been observed that the River Ganga continues to shift eastwards and is eroding villages one after another. Inhabitants face multidimensional obstacles to run their households. Large numbers of people are displaced every year due to loss of land. Failure in facilitating the required assistance in the form of alternative spaces for resettlement and other disaster-mitigating public support systems against these hazards would make it impossible for the deplorable condition of the vulnerable people to improve.

Abstract:Submarine mass wasting in continental margins poses a significant threat to offshore installations, submarine communication cables, and coastal communities due to tsunamis. Based on the analysis of time-lapse geophysical data, we report a very recent submarine slope failure and associated mass transport deposit (MTD) in the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin, the Bay of Bengal that occurred between January 2009 and December 2015. The head scarp shows erosion of ~ 160 m thick sedimentary strata with an estimated volume of ~ 11 km 3 . The fan-shaped MTD, located at water depths of 950 to 1100 m, shows a spatial coverage of ~ 70 km 2 (volume is ~ 2.2 km 3 ) with a maximum thickness of ~ 60 m. This is one of the largest submarine slope failures reported from time-lapsed geophysical surveys. We analyzed potential triggers such as floods, earthquakes, and cyclones that could have caused the slope failure. We believe that Cyclone Helen, a category-1 storm, may have contributed to the observed slumping in unstable shelf/slope regions of the KG Basin in November 2013 as the Cyclone eye traversed over the head of the slump. However, we cannot rule out other factors such as the extreme flooding events (2010 and 2013) and a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in the Bay of Bengal in May 2014. The study shows that pre-conditioning of sediments is an important factor in the assessment of deepwater geohazards, and areas with relatively moderate external triggers are also at high risk.

Abstract:Abstract Surface hazards can form hazard cascades which expand their reach. However, our understanding of their complex dynamics and ability to mitigate their impacts remain limited. In 2018, two landslides dammed the Jinsha River in the Tibetan plateau and formed landslide‐dammed lakes. Subsequent dam breaches prompted the evacuation of >120,000 people. An early warning system for floods using a regional seismic network has been proposed on the basis of catastrophic floods having been detected ∼100 km away, with seismic energy proportional to discharge. Surprisingly, we find that this catastrophic outburst flood was undetectable beyond a few kilometers, with peak seismic energy preceding peak discharge. We propose that river channel stability also controls seismic energy generation and should be considered for accurate monitoring of catastrophic floods. In contrast, we find that the various processes during dam breach can be well‐characterized seismically further away and provide warning ∼60 min before discharge exceeds monsoon flood levels. We also show that numerical modeling of dam breaches which typically lacks in situ measurements can benefit from incorporating seismic data as constraints. Finally, we show that this event drastically increased sediment fluxes ∼670 km downstream for years and may significantly reduce the capacity of hydropower plants. Our results reveal ways to improve early warning of catastrophic outburst floods and the need to consider surface hazards' long‐term impact when managing infrastructure in mountainous regions.

Abstract:River deltas, such as the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) delta, are highly vulnerable to flooding, exacerbated by intense human activities and rapid urban growth. This study explores the evolution of urban flood risks in the GBM delta under the combined impacts of climate change and urban expansion. Unlike traditional assessments that focus on a single flood source, we consider multiple sources-coastal, fluvial, and pluvial. Our findings indicate that future urban expansion will significantly increase flood exposure, with a substantial rise in flood risk from all sources by the end of this century. Climate change is the main driver of increased coastal flood risks, while urban growth primarily amplifies fluvial, and pluvial flood risks. This highlights the urgent need for adaptive urban planning strategies to mitigate future flooding and support sustainable urban development. The extreme high emissions future scenario (SSP5-8.5) shows the largest urban growth and consequent flood risk, emphasizing the necessity for preemptive measures to mitigate future urban flooding. Our study provides crucial insights into flood risk dynamics in delta environments, aiding policymakers and planners in developing resilience strategies against escalating flood threats.

Abstract:The Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna/Barak rivers are lifelines for millions of people in South Asia in Nepal, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh. They supply water for food and fibre production and for industrial and domestic purposes. They are also sources of disastrous floods that cause substantial damage to agriculture and infrastructure in these countries. There are claims that flood discharges, areal extent, and damage-costs are getting worse in the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna/Barak basins. The validity of these claims was examined by applying four different statistical tests to the peak discharge time series and flooded areas. The results indicate that no conclusive changes have occurred over the last few decades. Reports of increased flood damage may be due to a combination of other factors, such as improved damage assessment techniques, and the expansion and intensification of settlement in flood-prone areas, but this was not tested in this paper and should be top priority for future research.

Abstract:This study explores the seismotectonics of Kachchh in western India, a region with a low-to-moderate strain rate and a history of significant earthquakes, notably the 1819, Mw 7.8 Allah Bund, and the 2001, Mw 7.6 Bhuj. Despite its substantial seismic risk, comprehensive studies on Kachchh's seismogenic sources are scarce. This is attributed to the concealed nature of active structures, hindering definitive age constraints in paleoseismological research. Our research comprises a detailed paleoseismic analysis of the north-verging, reverse Jhura Fault underlying the Jhura anticline, a segment of the Kachchh Mainland Fault. This fault segment shows evidence of surface-rupturing earthquakes in the area south of the Great Rann of Kachchh. The investigation reveals three paleoseismic events: Event I before 9.72 ka B.P., Event II between 8.63–8.20 ka B.P., and Event III between 6.20–6.09 ka B.P. The elapsed time since the last event on this fault is > 8000 years, suggesting that the area is exposed to a significant earthquake hazard. This highlights the need for more precise characterization of individual seismogenic sources for future earthquake preparedness.

Abstract:Recorded earthquake‐induced changes in hydrogeological systems date back over 2,000 years. As a part of our ongoing hydrogeochemical monitoring effort to study such changes, we collected 406 groundwater samples twice a week between February 2021 and July 2023 from two bore wells in the Kopili fault zone of Northeast India. We analyzed stable isotope ratios (δ2H, δ18O) and dissolved element concentrations to obtain a 2.5‐year hydrogeochemical time series and responses to multiple regional earthquakes (Mw ≥ 3) within the monitored period. We find significant but transient anomalies in both the chemical and isotopic composition of groundwater at one of the observation wells (OW1) after the 2021 Assam Mw 6.4 earthquake, followed by prolonged alterations in the hydrochemistry at both wells. We do not identify any precursory changes. Using multivariate statistical techniques and analyzing compositional changes before and after the mainshock, we infer that the hydrochemical anomalies at OW1, representing an immediate response to the mainshock, can be attributed to the potential breach of a hydrological barrier. This, in turn, allowed the infiltration of new water into the OW1 aquifer, potentially sourced from the nearby Brahmaputra River. Subsequently, during the post‐anomaly period, the earthquake‐induced fracturing and the associated changes in permeability sustained a prolonged period of mixing between surface water and groundwater, resulting in newly formed hydrochemistry at both wells. Our findings highlight the dynamic nature of aquifer properties during earthquakes. Long‐term continuous evaluation of such changes may provide new insights into feedback between tectonics and fluid flow in the crust.

Abstract:The flood of Damodar river is a well-known fact which is used to the whole riverine society of the basin as well as to the eastern India. The study aims to estimate the spatio-temporal probability of floods and identify susceptible zones in the Lower Damodar Basin (LDB). A flood frequency analysis around 90 years hydrological series is performed using the Log-Pearson Type III model. The frequency ratio model has also been applied to determine the spatial context of flood. This reveals the extent to which the LDB could be inundated in response to peak discharge conditions, especially during the monsoon season. The findings indicate that 36.64% of the LDB falls under high to very high flood susceptibility categories, revealing an increasing downstream flood vulnerability trend. Hydro-geomorphic factors substantially contribute to the susceptibility of the LDB to high magnitude floods. A significant shift in flood recurrence intervals, from biennial occurrences in the pre-dam period to decadal or vicennial occurrences in the post-dam period, is observed. Despite a reduction in high-magnitude flood incidents due to dam and barrage construction, irregular flood events persist. The effect of flood in the LDB region is considered to be either positive as well as negative in terms of wholistic sense and impact. The analytical results of this research could serve to identify flood-prone zones and guide the development of flood resilience policies, thereby promoting sustainability within the LDB floodplain.

Abstract:Flood hazard assessment is essential for climate-change management planning. River flow frequency and size affect basin flood regime. This study evaluates the flood hazard of delta region of a large Indian river basin, the Mahanadi River basin, for possible future flood scenarios. Based on flood severity and frequency, basin flood regime change is examined. Four different flood scenarios are considered such as reference scenario (1955–2001), present scenario (1981–2011) and two possible future scenarios, by modifying the peak flood series with percentage change approach. Flood hazard was assessed based on the results of hydrodynamic modelling. Based on flood estimations at head of delta region, flood intensity is increasing in delta region of Mahanadi basin. Floods of higher return period (61 years) in the reference scenario happens to be a lower return period flood (11 years) in possible future scenario. In recent years, high floods have maximum water level profiles equal to or higher than 5- and 10-year return period floods of hypothetical future flood scenarios. Flood inundation evaluation under multiple land-uses shows that economically significant land-uses including farmland, built-up land, and aquaculture are more vulnerable to future floods. In the Mahanadi delta, 'high' and 'very high' flood depth coverage increases and 'low' depth diminishes. Inundation area for 'very high' flood depth is increasing, indicating agricultural vulnerability in the delta region.

Abstract:Many of the world's mega-river deltas are currently degrading due to a shortage of sediment supply feeding their construction. Here, using bathymetric and seismic data, the geomorphological/sedimentary evolution on and near a recently abandoned (1976 CE) Huanghe delta lobe is investigated. The delta front (DF) exhibits a lobe switching-controlled pattern of progradation followed by mass wasting on the upper front, and redeposition at the seaward toe of the front; the latter process appears to be associated with sediment failure and contributes to delta degradation. During degradation, mass wasting-driven deepening of the upper DF was initially up to similar to 0.86 m/yr from 1978 to 1985 CE, slowed to similar to 0.12 m/yr from 1985 to 2000 CE, and has been negligible since. In either prograding or degrading, gravity-driven sedimentation results in a downlapping seismic unit superimposed on the bottomset of an earlier converging clinoform, with numerous buried/exposed submarine channels at its seaward terminus. These units exhibit a shore-parallel elongated and continuous geometry, suggesting lateral spreading, which we attribute to alongshore hydrodynamic (especially tidal) remolding. Our findings underscore the significance of sediment gravity flows in the evolution of a degrading delta front, particularly as a principal mechanism of downslope mass transport that gentled (halving the gradient) and reshaped the DF over time. Gravity-driven accumulations sourced from upper DF collapse can account for similar to 1/3 of the previous DF and laterally extend over an unexpectedly large area (similar to 60-km long) through hydrodynamic redistribution. Both processes should be considered for modeling other subaqueous deltas.

Abstract:Nepal's quake-driven landslide hazards Large earthquakes can trigger dangerous landslides across a wide geographic region. The 2015 M w 7.8 Gorhka earthquake near Kathmandu, Nepal, was no exception. Kargal et al. used remote observations to compile a massive catalog of triggered debris flows. The satellite-based observations came from a rapid response team assisting the disaster relief effort. Schwanghart et al. show that Kathmandu escaped the historically catastrophic landslides associated with earthquakes in 1100, 1255, and 1344 C.E. near Nepal's second largest city, Pokhara. These two studies underscore the importance of determining slope stability in mountainous, earthquake-prone regions. Science , this issue p. 10.1126/science.aac8353 ; see also p. 147

Abstract:Large earthquakes can contribute to mountain growth by building topography but also contribute to mass removal from mountain ranges through widespread mass wasting. On annual to decadal or centennial timescales, large earthquakes also have the potential to significantly alter fluvial sediment dynamics if a significant volume of the sediment generated reaches the fluvial network. In this contribution, we focus on the Melamchi–Indrawati and Bhote Koshi rivers in central Nepal, which have both experienced widespread landsliding associated with the 2015 Gorkha (Nepal) earthquake. Using a time series of high-resolution satellite imagery, we have mapped exposed sediment along the rivers from 2012–2021 to identify zones of active channel deposition and document changes over time. Counter to expectations, we show negligible increases in coarse-sediment accumulation along both river corridors since the Gorkha earthquake. However, an extremely high-concentration flow event on 15 June 2021 caused an approximately 4-fold increase in exposed sediment along a 30 km reach of the channel with up to 12 m of channel aggradation in the Melamchi–Indrawati rivers; this event was localised and did not impact the neighbouring Bhote Koshi catchment. Based on published reports, new helicopter-based photography, and satellite data, we demonstrate that this event was sourced from a localised rainfall event between 4500 and 4800 m and that a significant fraction of the sediment was supplied from sources that were unrelated to the landslides generated by the Gorkha earthquake.

Abstract:Seismic activity in Aswan is influenced by the complex interactions of tectonic plates, the accumulation of stress, and the presence of geological fault systems. It revealed that epicenters are well distributed along four fault segments in a conjugate pattern, indicating a prominent E-W compressional stress. This research aims to explore the characteristics of seismicity and seismotectonics, with a focus on assessing their implications for risk reduction and disaster management in this densely populated region. A data review from the Egyptian National Seismological Network (ENSN) identified 464 earthquakes occurred between 2000 and 2021, with local magnitudes ranging from 0.3 to 4.4, and depths up to 25 km. The calculated Gutenberg-Richter b-value is approximately 0.87 ± 0.05, indicating a gradual stress accumulation. The current analysis shows a more consistent level of moderate seismic activity, unlike previous studies in Aswan region that reported a wide range of b - values from 0.554 to 1.07. This suggests that while earlier research captured a wider range of seismic behaviors, recent data indicates a stabilization in earthquake frequency and intensity. Additionally, the fractal dimension ( Dc ) calculated at 1.57 ± 0.04 shows an intermediate level of complexity and reflecting a clustering pattern of earthquakes. The variations in the b-value with different magnitudes and depths signify the involvement of active smaller faults, responsible for earthquakes up to magnitude 2.2, which then transition to fractured zones inducing earthquakes up to magnitude 2.5. This transition is followed by a decline in seismic activity, indicating regions that are potentially more likely to experience larger earthquakes. Moreover, stress disparities at various depths contribute to smaller earthquakes within the 5–10 km depth range. Return period analysis suggests that the earthquakes of magnitude 3.7 or higher are expected to occur approximately once every decade in Aswan. These findings are of utmost importance for earthquake risk reduction, hazard assessment, and the sustainable development of Aswan area.

Abstract:The Holocene evolution of the Krishna Delta was inferred using landform characteristics and 11 sediment cores with 59 Accelerator Mass Spectrometry 14C dates. The landform assemblages in a 5880 km2 area of the Krishna Delta indicate an upper (landward) river-built fluvial plain and a lower (seaward) marine-built beach-ridge plain. Holocene sediment unconformably overlying a Pleistocene basement consists of 11 sedimentary facies, mainly shallowing-upward and deltaic succession. Sea level indicators such as the basal mangrove peat layers above the Pleistocene basement and the foreshore sediments indicate that the sea level rose from −9 m to −3 m during 8.3–6.3 cal ky BP, and stabilised at the present level around 5 cal ky BP. The 3539 km2 area of the Krishna Delta beach-ridge plain developed in five major stages during the last 6 cal ky, with distinct lateral and seaward migration of delta lobes (depocentre shifts). Delta progradation accelerated in the last 500 years, forming an out-building lobate delta. However, predominant erosion along the sediment-starved coast during the past five decades, due to impoundment of riverine inputs at the burgeoning upstream dams, has pushed the Krishna Delta into a persistent destruction phase.
